    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday........

    13) Panthers 31, Buccaneers 13 (Thursday)-- Carolina had 16-yard edge in field position, outrushed hapless Bucs 129-48. You could make an argument that the Buccaneers are in the tank, and I won't argue.

    12) 49ers 42, Jaguars 10-- What should be the most exciting year of his life is turning into a nightmare for first-year Jags' coach Gus Bradley. He had to bury his dad this week (our condolences) and his job isn't going well either, as Jacksonville lost its first eight games, all by double figures.

    11) Lions 31, Cowboys 30-- Stafford threw for 488 yards, 329 of which went to Calvin Johnson but Detroit was -4 in turnovers, so they needed an 80-yard drive in 0:50 to pull this exciting game out with 0:12 left. This was the second time in last 55 games an NFL team was -4 or worse in turnovers and won.

    10) Giants 15, Eagles 7-- Vick felt his hamstring "pop" which could finish him for the year. This was the first time the Giants won without scoring a TD since a 9-6 win over Seattle on Sept. 22, 2002. Josh Brown kicked five FGs in what was a dreadful game.

    9) Chiefs 23, Browns 17-- KC outrushed Browns 136-57, converted 10-19 on third down and are now 8-0 halfway thru their schedule. Campbell threw ball for 283 yards (7.6 ypa) in his first '13 start, but Browns were 3-12 on third down. Chiefs are now 5-13 in last 18 games as a home favorite.

    8) Saints 35, Bills 17-- Buffalo turned ball over three times (-3), had 16-yard deficit in field position- this was first time this year Bills scored less than 20 points in a game. Brees completed 26-34 passes, was sharp off his bye.

    7) Patriots 27, Dolphins 17-- Miami lost 4th game in a row after being up 17-3 at half; Fish were -3 in turnovers, lost despite holding Brady to only 116 yards passing and 2-10 on 3rd down conversions. Brady was just 12-22, only fifth time in eight games he completed more than half his passes.

    6) Red Sox 4, Cardinals 2-- Last night's game ended on an obstruction call, this game ends on a pickoff at first when St Louis was down two runs. Jonny Gomes was the man for Boston, hitting a game-winning three-run homer. Red Sox used Lackey to to pitch 8th inning, his first relief stint since 2004.

    5) Bengals 49, Jets 9-- Jet offense ran 65 plays Sunday; they were outscored 14-9 by Bengal defense on those 65 plays, with Cincy ran two INTs back for TDs. Dalton averaged 10.4 yards/pass attempts in this one-sided game.

    4) Raiders 21, Steelers 18-- Pitt native Pryor ran 93 yards for TD on first play of the game, the longest run ever by a QB, as Oakland won its first post-bye game since 2002. Suisham missed two FGs under 40 yards and Steelers ran ball for only 35 yards-- hard to win that way.

    3) Broncos 45, Redskins 21-- Washington led 21-7 with with 11:35 left in the third quarter, then the roof fell in-- Redskins threw picks on their last four possessions, while Denver gained 266 yards from that point on and scored a defensive TD against Washington's backup QB Cousins. This was a sloppy game, with nine turnovers-- seven INTs.

    2) Cardinals 27, Falcons 13-- Atlanta ran ball for only 27 yards; in last two games, they've run ball 32 times for 45 yards- without Julio Jones, Ryan can't just throw it on every play and put enough points on board. Cardinals get to their bye 4-4, showing progress under first-year coach Arians.

    1) Packers 44, Vikings 31-- RB Lacy gives Green Bay balance on offense that offsets all the injuries their WR/TE's have had. Both teams had a special teams TD in this game. Vikings need to decide on a starting QB.

NCAAF betting: SEC teams closing in on win totals

It might be hard to believe, but the NCAA season is rapidly winding down.

What better opportunity to look back at season win total and check out which teams are on the cusp and still have a legit shot of surpassing those totals?

Here is a look at three teams in the SEC that have a chance, but face some stiff competition down the stretch.

For your reference, here is a look at season win totals from 5Dimes.eu.

      Texas A&M Aggies (6-2)

The Aggies were given a season win total of 9.5 and currently sport a 6-2 record with two home losses to Alabama and Auburn. A&M has four games remaining and should pick up wins at home versus versus UTEP and Mississippi State in their next two games. Closing the season will be tough with away games at LSU and at Missouri.

      South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2)

Like the Aggies, the Gamecocks were given a 9.5 season win total and also own a 6-2 record. It has been an inconsistent season for Steven Spurrier's team as they can lose to a run-of-the-mill Tennessee program one week, and beat an extremely good Missouri Tigers team the next. South Carolina has four games left, but they are all at home. They'll close the season against Mississippi State, Florida, Coastal Carolina and, finally, Clemson.

      Tennessee Volunteers (4-4)

Just a final pair of victories and the Volunteers will cash in for bettors that had them surpassing the 5.5 win total attached to them. It won't be easy, though. The next two games will be tough for the Volunteers as they are at Missouri in Week 10 and host Auburn the following week. They have a favorable conclusion to the season with games against Vanderbilt and a season-finale at Kentucky.

Red Sox at Cardinals: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals (-115, 7)

        Series tied 2-2.

The first four games of the World Series have been won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox will attempt to take control of the series when the former hosts Game 5 on Monday. The big mistake of Game 4 was a high sinker to Jonny Gomes, who deposited it beyond the left-field wall to give the Red Sox a 4-2 win.

St. Louis became the first team in history to end a World Series game on a pickoff when its other big mistake came back to bite it on Sunday. Rookie Kolten Wong was nabbed at first base to end the game with Carlos Beltran at the plate representing the tying run. That marks two straight series games ending in historic fashion after Boston made the big mistake of Game 3 on an obstruction call at third base.

        TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

WEATHER: Temperatures in high 50s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing ESE at 4 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Jon Lester (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (0-1, 5.40)

Lester dominated in Game 1, striking out eight and scattering five hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. The 29-year-old has not allowed a run in 13 1/3 career innings in the World Series and is dominant in the 2013 postseason with five runs allowed in 27 total innings. Lester’s worst start of the playoffs was his lone road turn, when he surrendered two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings at Detroit.

Wainwright did not get a lot of help from the defense behind him in Game 1 and ended up being charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings. That made two straight losses in the postseason for Wainwright, who came out on the bad end of a 3-0 shutout at Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series. Wainwright got the win in each of his two postseason starts at home, yielding two runs on 11 hits in 16 combined innings.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in St. Louis.
        * Red Sox are 5-2 in their last seven during Game 5 of a series.
        * Cardinals are 7-1 in their last eight during Game 5 of a series.

        UMP TRENDS - Bill Miller:

        * Under is 36-17 in Miller's last 53 interleague games behind home plate.
        * Under is 42-20 in Miller's last 62 games behind home plate.
        * Home team is 6-2 in Miller's last eight interleague games behind home plate.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. The Red Sox have committed errors in five straight games.

        2. St. Louis 3B David Freese, who is the 2011 World Series MVP, is 1-for-12 with four strikeouts in the set.

        3. Boston DH David Ortiz is playing 1B in the NL park and has reached base safely in each of his last seven trips to the plate.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Oct. 21-27.

          Hot team

          Minnesota Wild (3-0 SU)

The Wild had a great week as they posted victories over the Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and the Chicago Blackhawks. Minnesota has been paced by stellar goaltending from both Josh Harding and Niklas Backstrom. We'll see how strong the Wild are as the the 'Hawks come to town with revenge in mind Tuesday night.

          Cold team

          Detroit Red Wings (0-3 SU)

The Winged Wheel got off to a great start, typical of the stellar franchise. That went pear shaped quickly as the Wings have dropped four-straight games and lost all three efforts this past week. Even worse, the three losses came at home against San Jose, Ottawa and the New York Rangers.

          Best Over play

          Phoenix Coyotes (3-0 O/U)

The Coyotes are a young and exciting team and strong defensively. Supposedly. You'd think a blue line featuring Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle and Mike Smith between the pipes would keep scorelines low. Apparently not so. The 'Yotes sit 25th in the league with 3.17 and gave up seven to the Kings earlier this week.

          Best Under play

          Buffalo Sabres (1-2 O/U)

The lowly Sabres are the best Under play on the season at 3-9 O/U and have played under the total in back-to-back games heading into the new week. Buffalo is having huge problems lighting lamp and are dead-last in the league averaging 1.46 goals per game. On the flip side, goalies Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth were extremely good throughout the week. There's a good chance they could appease Under bettors this upcoming week as they face fellow low-scoring teams like the Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.

          Surveying the schedule

          - The Boston Bruins are a perfect 4-0 on the road and have two big road games this upcoming week. They are at the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday and at the New York Islanders Saturday evening.

          - The Vancouver Canucks have been a dominant 5-2-1 against Eastern Conference opponents this season. The Canucks begin a a three-game road trip Monday night at Washington and then travel to Detroit Wednesday before facing the Leafs at Toronto Saturday night.

NHL betting: Despite rule changes, Unders cashing in
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even with the expectation that goalscoring would increase (which it still may, of course) due to size restrictions on goalie equipment, NHL Unders are hitting at 55.26 percent in all games and 57.01 in non-overtime games heading into Sunday's action.

The new rule restricts the size of a goalies' pads, making them shorter and exposing a bit more of the five hole.

Another rule change, one that kind of slid under the radar, is the decrease in the size of the net. Due to this, there is more room behind the net, thus more space to set up and make pass, or even attempt a wrap around.

There are a number of teams that have posted excellent records skewing to the Under side to start the season.

The Buffalo Sabres (3-9 Over/Under), Montreal Canadiens (3-8 O/U), Philadelphia Flyers (2-7 O/U), Chicago Blackhawks (3-8 O/U), Minnesota Wild (3-7 O/U) and Boston Bruins (2-6 O/U) are the top under plays in the league at the moment.

Baseball's best Under ump behind home plate for Game 5
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Umpire Bill Miller will be behind home plate for Game 5 of the World Series in St. Louis Monday night, putting MLB totals bettors on red alert.

Miller is among the best Under umps in the majors this season, with his games going 10-24 O/U during the regular season – a winning percentage of 70.5 for the Under in those contests.

Last season, Miller’s games as home ump posted a 13-20 O/U record and going back to 2008, Miller has produced a 75-124 O/U count (62% Unders) when set as the home plate umpire.

While Miller’s lone 2013 postseason game calling the balls and strikes topped the total, the 16-year veteran ump is 20-42 O/U in his last 62 games as home plate ump. Miller is also 17-36 O/U in his last 53 interleague contests behind home.

Monday’s total for Game 5 is set at 7 runs, with ace pitchers Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright taking the mound. During the regular season, games with totals of seven or less runs went 3-8 O/U when Miller was making the calls. The Under is a perfect 4-0 in the last four starts for Lester with Miller behind home plate.

Defending NBA champs a bad bet in season openers

The Miami Heat bucked a long-running ATS trend last season, defeating the Boston Celtics 120-107 as 6.5-point home favorites on the opening night of the NBA schedule.

Before that victory, defending NBA champions were 7-3 SU but just 3-7 ATS in their first game of the season off a title run over the last 10 years. That win over Boston also snapped a six-game ATS skid for reigning NBA champs in their first game of the schedule.

Miami is back in that position again, taking on the Chicago Bulls as a 5-point home favorite to kick off the 2013-14 season Tuesday night.

Before the Heat won their opener last October, the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers (twice), Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and the 2011-12 Miami squad fell short of the spread in their season debuts.

Going back another 10 seasons, between 1992 and 2001, defending NBA champions flexed their muscles in the season opener, going 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS. However, the Bulls (5), Houston Rockets (2) and Lakers (2) accounted for nine of those titles.

Oddsmakers have set the Heat as +240 favorites to win their third straight NBA title this season. Tuesday’s total is set at 187.5 points.

Good morning, guys! What a weekend!!!! Holy cow!

Kaptain, I'm really glad to hear this stuff helps a little bit. I always run my picks through here and I find it really does help when I use this stuff to make the final cut of my list.

I'm looking for everything that's available so far for the new cfb week. I've got the long sheet and trend reports ready to go and I'll start that thread within minutes.

Rod, did I miss a hockey pick this weekend? I've been watching closely for you but sometimes I'll miss something even when I'm looking for it. Those first two totals were great calls!

Let's have a great day, guys! I'm looking for Waino to make a statement tonight after falliing apart in game 1. We'll see.

                        Good luck tonight, guys!

Hey Udog, no worries, as you didn't miss any posts. I am very selective about my picks in hockey and sometimes just play one game a week. I like to wait for bad backup goalies to start, like that third stringer on the Penguins, who is only playing on the NHL due their regular backup being out 3-6 months.

                            Good luck tonight!
