Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) As of this morning, Fresno State is America's team; they're 7-0 with two OT wins, a 41-40 win and another game they led 42-3 that ended 42-37. They blocked a 37-yard San Diego State FG on the last play of regulation last night, then won in OT after blowing a 28-14 4th quarter lead. Fun team.

    12) If Texas wins Big 12, does Mack Brown get to keep his job? After its 30-7 win at struggling TCU, Longhorns are 4-0 in league play. This game had a weather delay of 3+ hours, but Texas was in control before that.

As for TCU, does the phrase, "big fish, small pond" sound good right now?

    11) San Jose State 51, Wyoming 44-- Cowboys led 16-0 early and 30-14 in third quarter, but gave up 482 passing yards to David Fales. Not often a team gains 599 yards and loses, but Wyoming did.

    10) Connor Shaw is a warrior; the injured South Carolina QB came off the bench to complete 20-29 passes for 201 yards in a quarter and a half, leading Gamecocks back from a 17-0 deficit to a 27-24 OT win after Mizzou clanked the tying FG off the upright. Its the stuff legends are made of.

    9) Al Golden is working miracles in Miami; Hurricanes are 7-0, despite trailing by 10+ points in each of their last three games- they play Florida St. next Saturday night, in what should be a very interesting game..........

8)....... seeing as Florida State was beating NC State 35-0 Saturday. In the first quarter. Seminoles are playing really, really well.

    7) Baylor 59, Kansas 14-- Game was 38-nil at the half; think Charlie Weis tells recruits he has a "decided schematic advantage" over Art Briles? The next person who hires Weis as anything but a night watchman needs to be fired on the spot.

    6) Minnesota 34, Nebraska 23-- Gophers had lost 16 games in a row to Nebraska by an average score of 40-9; now they're bowl eligible after running ball down Cornhuskers' throats for 271 yards. That doesn't happen much. .

    5) As far as the end of the World Series game goes, the umpires called the play right; it wasn't a pretty end to an interesting game, but then again, this ain't the WWE, where everything is scripted for a maximum of drama.

If you are a Red Sox fan and are bitching at the umps, try bitching at the guy who threw the ball into LF, or your manager, who didn't walk John Jay with first base open and light-hitting Pete Kozma on deck.

    4) UNLV 27, Nevada 22-- Rebels won Fremont Cannon for first time in nine years and are now 5-3 and need one more win to be bowl eligible. It says on my computer screen that the cannon is the most expensive trophy in college football, so I'm passing that knowledge on. Do with it what you will.

    3) Lot of lousy games on TV today: Florida State, Alabama, Oregon, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Michigan State, Texas, Notre Dame, Baylor, Ohio State all won TV games by 20+ points- thank god for Fresno State.

    2) Ohio State 63, Penn State 14-- Wow. In two true road games, Nittany Lions have allowed 107 points. Urban Meyer challenged the spot of the ball on a play when he was winning by 49 points. Oy.

    1) On October 27, Duke, Tulane, Rice, Minnesota are all 6-2. In football. Is this a great country or what?

NASCAR betting: Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 preview

The Chase for the Championship is down to its final four races. Next up is the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville. “The Paperclip” is among the toughest tracks on the NASCAR circuit, however, there are a handful of drivers who consistently finish near the front in Virginia.

      Favorite

      Jimmie Johnson (+175)

Johnson has been dominant at Martinsville during his career. His average finish of 5.3 is head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field, posting eight career wins there. Johnson is kicking himself after last weekend, missing out on win after running up front most of the day. Johnson still holds a 4-point lead over Matt Kenseth and couldn’t be in a better spot to build on that gap.

      Underdog

      Ryan Newman (+3,000)

Newman is sitting 11th among Chase contenders but has been the most consistent driver over the past four races. He’s placed eighth, eighth and ninth in three of his last four runs and has six Top-10 finishes in his last eight races. Newman picked up a win at Martinsville last year, winning the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in April 2012, and has placed inside the Top 5 in seven of his career 23 starts in Virginia.

      Long shot

      Danica Patrick (+10,000)

It doesn’t say long shot for nothing. But, Patrick is actually a dark horse contender at Martinsville, where she finished 12th in her first run on “The Paperclip” after starting the race in 32nd last season. Patrick was burned by costly mistakes at Talladega last weekend. She was penalized for speeding on pit-road and lashed out at her crew for not communicating. That led to a 33rd-place finish and spoiled what could have been Patrick’s best performance of her NASCAR career.

Key stat: If a driver outside the Top 12 wins at Martinsville, it would be the first time in the nine-year history of the Chase that non-Chase drivers won three straight Chase races.

Odds to win Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 (Odds courtesy of TopBet.eU)

      Aric Almirola 100-1
      Brad Keselowski 12-1

      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 18-1
      Danica Patrick 100-1
      Denny Hamlin 12-1
      Elliott Sadler 100-1
      Greg Biffle 30-1
      Jamie McMurray 50-1
      Jeff Burton 100-1
      Jeff Gordon 6-1
      Marcos Ambrose 100-1

Red Sox at Cardinals: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals (-112, 7.5)

        St. Louis leads series 2-1.

The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals are proving to be so evenly matched, that only a rare call could separate the teams. The Cardinals came out on the good side of an obstruction ruling in the ninth inning of Game 3 to grab a 2-1 lead in the World Series and will try to make it 3-1 when they host the Red Sox in Game 4 on Sunday. Allen Craig scored the game-winning run thanks to that obstruction call at third base, but may have suffered an injury on the play.

Craig had to slide into third, stumble over Will Middlebrooks and slide into home on the final play of Game 3 and clearly came out limping while his team celebrated around him. Both Boston and St. Louis had problems in the bullpen Saturday, making it two games in a row that the Red Sox middle relief crew let a series of inherited runners score in a loss. The Cardinals are getting offense from Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina while Boston is forced to chose between David Ortiz and Mike Napoli at first base.

        TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 50s with clear skies and winds blowing SSE at 4 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (0-0, 5.40)

Buchholz was the No. 2 starter during the ALCS but was pushed to Game 4 of the World Series due to shoulder fatigue. The 29-year-old went through an intense throwing session Friday and is ready to go but will likely be backed up by long reliever Ryan Dempster. Buchholz was not able to go more than 85 pitches in either of his two ALCS starts against Detroit.

Lynn could be on a short leash as well after topping out at 83 pitches in his two previous starts this postseason. The 26-year-old surrendered two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings at Los Angeles in Game 4 of the NLCS but issued three walks. Lynn is 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA in nine career interleague games - six starts.

        TRENDS:

        * Red Sox are 37-14 in their last 51 games following a loss.
        * Red Sox are 29-59 in their last 88 games as underdogs.
        * Cardinals are 5-1 in their last six interleague home games.
        * Over is 4-0 in Cardinals' last four games as a home favorite.

        UMP TRENDS - Paul Emmel:

        * Cardinals are 1-4 in their last five games with Emmel behind home plate.
        * Under is 4-1 in Emmel's last five games behind home plate vs. St. Louis.
        * Under is 5-1-1 in Emmel's last seven interleague games behind home plate vs. Boston.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Red Sox LHP Craig Breslow allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch while recording one out in the last two games.

        2. St. Louis is 13-1 in its last 14 postseason games at home.

        3. Boston C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts in his last three postseason games.

Thanks, jt! Good luck to you, too!

Thanks for putting me on the over yesterday, too.

I think it's over again tonight but I can't get a feel for a side yet. Either one of these starters can give up a bunch of runs in a hurry.

I sure did, Kaptain, thanks to you! You won all day long. I took Bum's late- nighters on Stanford and Washington and he won. My picks went 2-1 in foots and 2-0 in bases. Just a great day!

I thought Spurrier's guys were gonna blow it for me at Missouri but they got it done.

p.s. It was jt who convinced me on the baseball over when he took it. He gets the credit for that win cause I couldn't make up my mind.

College football odds: Week 10 opening line report

Is the state of Florida the 'King of Football' once again?

One thing is for certain, Week 10 of the college football schedule will bring us a matchup to determine who the king in the Sunshine State actually is when the Miami Hurricanes visit the Florida State Seminoles.

Both of these programs boast 7-0 records but it's the Seminoles who come in as the sexier team.

Another blowout victory, this time a 49-17 triumph over North Carolina State, has the Seminoles (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS) opening as huge home faves over the Hurricanes (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS).

The 'Canes keep winning, but not in the same, dominant fashion which their in-state rivals do.

They escaped Wake Forest as 24-21 victors, but were far from covering the daunting 26-point spread that oddsmakers installed.

Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, says he and his team of oddsmakers are fully aware of the quality and talent on both sides, but sent out a big number of FSU -20 nonetheless.

"We sent out -20 but only see this number going higher. Florida State warrants it," Korner told Covers. "They're the 'it' team right now and they're looking better and better each week. Miami is good but they're facing a buzz saw this weekend."

Michigan Wolverines at Michigan State Spartans (-3.5)

Another classic in-state battle has the Michigan Wolverines (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) traveling to face the Michigan State Spartans (7-1 SU, 4-3-1 ATS).

The visitors are coming off a bye week after putting up 63 points against offensive-oriented Indiana. It was a good bounceback game after suffering their first loss of the season to Penn State on Oct. 12.

The Spartans posted an impressive 42-3 victory over a slumping Illinois team for their fourth-straight victory.

Michigan backers have felt stung in the previous meetings between the two programs as the Wolverines are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.

"Our range went from MSU -1.5 to -4.5 and settled at -3.5," Korner says. "It's a good rivalry game in which our numbers reflect a competitive contest. Michigan State should take care of business but the hook may grab some dog players early in the week."

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Florida Gators (+1.5)

The 2013 edition of the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" is set to go Saturday and both Georgia and Florida sport identical 4-3 records.

Both teams are coming in cold, however, having lost two straight games.

The Georgia Bulldogs (1-5-1 ATS) have severely cooled off since a great victory over LSU in Week 5. Their ATS record is dreadful and places near the bottom of the standings.

Coming off a much-needed bye week, the Gators (2-5 ATS) will look to capture their first Okefenokee Oar trophy since 2010.

"We were all on Georgia's side but between a PK and -2," Korner said. "We sent out GA -1.5 knowing this number can swing to Florida's side. Either one of these teams can win straight up so the number looks to be in the PK zone all week. We don't feel this number will take off either way."

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas Tech Red Raiders (+3)

The Red Raiders (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) suffered their first loss of the season against the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 9. Many felt their 7-0 record was potentially smoke and mirrors as it is and their competition in Week 10 is another power in the Sooner State.

After a shocking loss to West Virginia in Week 5, the Cowboys (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) have rattled off three-straight victories, including a 58-27 thumping of Iowa State in Week 9.

Korner and his team like the Cowboys as field goal faves and are confident the number will swing throughout the week.

"We sent out Oklahoma State -3 and though we saw the offshores swung their number over to Texas Tech's side, we're not falling for it. Oklahoma State is the better team and that number will come back our way come kick off."
