    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

NFL trends to think about with Week 8 upon us:

-- Denver covered eight of its last ten home games.

-- Packers are 3-7 in last ten games as a road favorite.

-- Steelers are 2-7 in last nine games as a road favorite.

-- Chiefs covered five of last 17 as a home favorite.

-- Saints covered 16 of last 22 games with AFC teams.

-- Rams covered five of last six as a divisional home underdog.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

    13) Its funny, I pay for the MLB and NBA packages on DirecTV, but any rebroadcasts of their games late at night are blacked out, except for the NY teams. That makes no sense, I pay extra to watch the games, replays should be included.

Then there is the NHL, whose package I don’t have; they allow rebroadcasts to be shown late at night, so at times I wind up watching as much NHL as NBA, even though I bought the NBA’s package.

    12) Talked earlier this week about Tim Lincecum getting a baffling $35M for two years from the Giants; read an explanation online that made very little sense. Of all the pitchers who threw 300+ innings in 2012-13, Lincecum had the 4th-worst ERA, yet he rakes in major bucks. Who cares if someone else signs him?

    11) Put it this way: the six starting pitchers Tampa Bay used the most this season earned a total of $18,056,900 this year; Oakland’s six starters earned $10,725,000. That’s why the A’s/Rays win; they spend their money more efficiently, even if they do have a lot less of it.

    10) When Jason Campbell starts Sunday’s game for Cleveland, he becomes the Browns’ third starting QB this year and their 20th starting QB since they started playing again in 1999.

    9) Florida Gulf Coast took advantage of last year’s Sweet 16 appearance by signing a 3-star recruit, 6-1 G Zach Johnson; not too many Atlantic Sun teams sign 3-star recruits, so good for them. FGCU will be on TV a few times this fall, including the first night of the season November 8.

    8) Speaking of which, Georgetown-Oregon are opening the season with a game in South Korea, I’m assuming on an Army base. Hoyas tried to play Florida last year on the deck of a ship, but excess moisture forced the game to be called at halftime.

    7) Was stumbling thru YouTube the other night and found a clip I had never seen of the night Trent Green got hurt playing in a preseason game for the Rams, the injury that made Kurt Warner the Rams’ starter.

This was 1999, and the Chargers’ announcers were talking about how four preseason games are too many and there should be less of them. 14 years later and we’re still having the same discussions. Chargers’ coach in 1999, by the way, was current Oregon State coach Mike Riley.

    6) Going thru college hoop stuff for this season, it is just weird that the Big East has teams in Omaha-Chicago-Indiana-Cincinnati-Milwaukee, none of which are very close to the east.

    5) LB Lawrence Timmons had 17 tackles for the Steelers Sunday in their 19-16 win over the Ravens; he played most of the second half with a broken hand. Tough guy.

    4) Jets are only NFL team with a winning record that’s been outscored this season. Only part that matters there is the winning record part.

    3) If you own the Vikings and you see four different quarterbacks starting in a 7-game stretch, do you really believe your employees know what they are doing?

    2) Rising star in football coaching: UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth, but since it is doubtful any SEC jobs will open up this winter, he’ll probably be back at ULL next season. Have to be careful not to take just any job; he is doing real well at ULL, so he can pick his spot in choosing his next job.

    1) Very cool piece on YouTube about Northwestern’s basketball team, now coached by Chris Collins (son of Doug, friend of Coach K).

Collins is talking to the team about how one kid has worked harder than anyone in the Wildcats’ practices, and he calls walk-on James Montgomery to the front of the room, where he tells the team that James is now on scholarship and everyone yells, cheers and hugs the kid.

Then they show James calling his mother on his IPhone and you can hear his mother/sister cheering/screaming/crying on the phone. Touching stuff. A scholarship to Northwestern is serious money. Good for James.

Red Sox at Cardinals: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals (-104, 7)

      Series tied 1-1.

The Boston Red Sox are even in the World Series thanks in large part to the Nos. 4-5 lineup combination of David Ortiz and Mike Napoli. When the St. Louis Cardinals host the Red Sox in Game 3 on Saturday, one of those two will have to sit on the bench. The Red Sox lose the designated hitter in the National League park and alternated between Napoli and Ortiz at first base during interleague play in the regular season.

Ortiz homered in each of the first two games and Napoli provided the key hit - a three-run double - in Boston's 8-1 victory in Game 1. Ortiz’s two-run blast in Game 2 accounted for the only runs the Red Sox managed in a 4-2 loss, during which some questions popped up about their bullpen. Craig Breslow allowed a pair of inherited runners to score and committed an error during the three-run seventh inning while the St. Louis bullpen, headlined by rookies Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal, dominated.

      TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-50s with wind blowing across the field at 8 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Jake Peavy (0-1, 8.31 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Joe Kelly (0-1, 4.41)

Peavy put together a strong start in the clinching game of the American League Division Series at Tampa Bay but was lit up for seven runs on five hits and three walks in three innings at Detroit in the ALCS. The 32-year-old is 0-3 with a 10.31 ERA in four career postseason starts. Peavy owns a history against the Cardinals from when he was in the National League and is 1-3 with a 2.08 ERA in four career starts at St. Louis.

Kelly surrendered four earned runs in five innings at Los Angeles in the NLCS to suffer his lone postseason setback. The 25-year-old features a power sinker but does not work deep into games, topping out at six innings and 95 pitches in three postseason starts. Kelly posted worse numbers at home than on the road in the regular season, going 5-4 with a 3.29 ERA in 18 games - eight starts - in St. Louis.

      TRENDS:

      * Red Sox are 9-1 in their last 10 World Series games.
      * Cardinals are 6-1 in their last seven World Series home games.
      * Under is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings.
      * Red Sox are 4-1 in Peavy's last five starts as a favorite.

      UMP TRENDS - Dana DeMuth

      * Red Sox are 17-4 in their last 21 games with DeMuth behind home plate.
      * Home team is 4-1 in DeMuth's last five interleague games behind home plate.
      * Under is 6-1-1 in DeMuth's last eight games behind home plate.

      WALK-OFFS:

      1. Red Sox OF Daniel Nava could get his first start of the series on Saturday, replacing Jonny Gomes.

      2. Cardinals 1B Allen Craig (foot) served as DH in Boston but will likely find himself back on the bench in St. Louis.

      3. Ortiz is tied for seventh on the all-time list with 17 postseason home runs and matched a franchise record with his fifth of the 2013 playoffs in Game 2

        CFL
        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Week 18

Montreal (7-9) @ Hamilton (8-8)—Alouettes (-1.5) crushed Hamilton 36-5 at home last week, running out to 31-3 halftime lead, fifth straight win for home team in this series; Als (+8) lost 28-26 here in first meeting five weeks ago—they’ve lost six straight road games in this series, with last five series games in Ontario going over the total. Montreal won three of last four games, covered four of last five; they’re 3-2 as road underdogs this year, 3-5 SU on road, with losses by 8-8-25-7-7 points. TiCats covered eight of last 11 games, are 3-2 SU in last five; they’ve won four of last five home games, with wins by 23-8-2-6 points and a loss to Calgary. Hamilton has been minus in turnovers in each of last five games and outscored in second half in each of its last seven games. Last four TiCat games stayed under the total.

Saskatchewan (11-5) @ Calgary (13-3)—Home side won both series games this year; Roughriders (-2) won 36-21 in Regina in Week 2 (outscored Calgary 22-0 in 2nd half), then lost 42-27 (+3) in post-bye game at McMahon in Week 7, with Stamps outrushing them 223-171. Last four series games went over the total. I say Riders are streaky; this is their season: 5W-L-3W-4L-3W, that’s streaky- they’re 2-1 as a dog this season, 5-3 SU on road, with weird losses at Edmonton/Montreal during their skid. Calgary won eight of last nine games, covering last four; they’re 5-3 as home favorites this year, winning home games by 12-11-15-3-4-27-14 points, with a loss to Toronto. Saskatchewan has nine INTs in its last three games, with a +8 turnover ratio in those games. Seven of eight Stampeder home games went over the total; last five Rider games stayed under.

Alouettes at Tiger-Cats: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-6, 53)

A new-look offense has put the Montreal Alouettes in position to host a playoff game. The Alouettes can tie the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for second in the East Division when they visit the Tiger-Cats in Guelph, Ont., on Saturday. Quarterback Troy Smith and running back Tyrell Sutton were fantastic in their first starts for Montreal last week against Hamilton, which can clinch at least second place with a victory.

The Tiger-Cats are still within striking distance of the Toronto Argonauts for the East Division lead, but quarterback Henry Burris had his worst start of the season last week, throwing for 106 yards. Hamilton’s offense lives and dies with Burris, who leads the league with 4,629 passing yards, but the 38-year-old could be showing signs of fatigue at the end of a long season. Burris won’t have an easy time against an Alouettes' defense that has 51 sacks and a league-leading 23 interceptions.

        TV: 1 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (7-9): Linebacker Chip Cox and kick returner Bo Bowling were both named CFL players of the week after last week’s 36-5 rout. Cox, who leads the league with 104 tackles, was named defensive player of the week after adding six tackles and a pair of sacks last Sunday, while Bowling received special teams honours for totalling 118 return yards in his first game of 2013. Cornerback Geoff Tisdale leads the league with six interceptions.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (8-8): Running back C.J. Gable is third in the league in yards from scrimmage with 1,358 in his first CFL season, providing a reliable option for Burris on the ground. Wide receivers Greg Ellingson and Luke Tasker missed practice Wednesday, putting their availability for Saturday in jeopardy. On defense, defensive backs Brandon Isaac and Evan McCullough and linebackers Erik Harris and Nate Bussey also missed practice.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Hamilton.
        * Alouettes are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
        * Alouettes are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.
        * Under is 4-0 in Tiger-Cats last four games overall.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner, graded his starting debut a “C-plus,” suggesting he expects to improve. Smith threw three touchdown passes in the first half but was largely ineffective in the second half last week.

        2. Hamilton K Luca Congi reached 100 kicking points for the seventh straight season.

        3. The Alouettes close their regular season with a visit to Toronto, while Hamilton finishes with a road game against Winnipeg.

NHL betting: Road favorites continue to cash in
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NHL road favorites continue to be an overwhelming winner in the early stages of the season, cashing in at a 73 percent clip.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,154.93 if they had wagered on the road fave in each of these spots.

Road favorites are 27-10 thus far with the Buffalo Sabres positioned as prime fade material in such situations at 0-6-1.

Saturday's NHL schedule provides a few opportunities to capitalize on this trend with the San Jose Sharks (-124) visiting the Montreal Canadiens, the St. Louis Blues (-120) traveling to Music City to face the Nashville Predators, and the Washington Capitals (-126) in Alberta to take on the Calgary Flames.

NASCAR betting: Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 preview

The Chase for the Championship is down to its final four races. Next up is the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville. “The Paperclip” is among the toughest tracks on the NASCAR circuit, however, there are a handful of drivers who consistently finish near the front in Virginia.

                            Favorite

                            Jimmie Johnson (+175)

Johnson has been dominant at Martinsville during his career. His average finish of 5.3 is head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field, posting eight career wins there. Johnson is kicking himself after last weekend, missing out on win after running up front most of the day. Johnson still holds a 4-point lead over Matt Kenseth and couldn’t be in a better spot to build on that gap.

                            Underdog

                            Ryan Newman (+3,000)

Newman is sitting 11th among Chase contenders but has been the most consistent driver over the past four races. He’s placed eighth, eighth and ninth in three of his last four runs and has six Top-10 finishes in his last eight races. Newman picked up a win at Martinsville last year, winning the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in April 2012, and has placed inside the Top 5 in seven of his career 23 starts in Virginia.

                            Long shot

                            Danica Patrick (+10,000)

It doesn’t say long shot for nothing. But, Patrick is actually a dark horse contender at Martinsville, where she finished 12th in her first run on “The Paperclip” after starting the race in 32nd last season. Patrick was burned by costly mistakes at Talladega last weekend. She was penalized for speeding on pit-road and lashed out at her crew for not communicating. That led to a 33rd-place finish and spoiled what could have been Patrick’s best performance of her NASCAR career.

Key stat: If a driver outside the Top 12 wins at Martinsville, it would be the first time in the nine-year history of the Chase that non-Chase drivers won three straight Chase races.
