    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends to think about with Week 8 upon us:

-- Bucs are 4-16 in last 20 games as a home underdog.

    – Eagles are 0-11 vs spread in last eleven home games.

    – Saints covered 18 of last 23 home games.

    – Dallas is 4-14 vs spread in game following its last 18 wins.

    – Vikings are 16-8 vs spread in last 24 divisional home games.

    – Steelers are 3-9 vs spread in last 12 non-divisional games.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

    32) Jaguars-- ’84 Oilers were last team to lose first six games by double figure margins; Jags are at seven and counting. Only game they’ve covered was as 27-point underdogs.

    31) Buccaneers—No wins, three staph infections, QB was fired, with coach soon to follow. Not their finest moment.

    30) Vikings—Scooped up Josh Freeman, QB Bucs fired, for some unknown reason; he threw 53 passes Monday, despite having Adrian Peterson behind him. This is called bad coaching.

    29) Browns—0-6 when Weeden starts; so Jason Campbell gets his turn this week. This team has some talent, they went 3-0 when Hoyer started.

    28) Giants—Has any team ever looked less happy to win a game than the Giants Monday night? They’ve lost eight games in row on road, Eagles have lost nine in row at home. Something has to give Sunday at the Linc.

    8) Bengals—Marvin Lewis is working wonders with this franchise, but how does Mike Zimmer not get a head coaching job? One of Bengals’ strengths is continuity amongst their assistants.

    7) Packers—They seriously need to lose the throwback uniforms. Awful. Horrendous. Very glad Jermichael Finley seems to be doing better.

    6) Saints—Probably should be higher on this list, but I have the only 7-0 team 4th, so then again, maybe not.

    5) Colts—Jim Irsay did a masterful job deflecting pressure off his young QB last week, with Peyton Manning coming to town. Indy gave other defenses a roadmap on how to defend Denver. All those teams need now is Robert Mathis to terrorize #18, but only the Colts have him.

    4) Chiefs—Still have two games left with Denver; would they sign up for a split right now?

    3) 49ers—Won/covered last four games, have vacation in England this week against the hapless Jags.

    2) Seahawks—I’m sure they’re terrified of Kellen Clemens Monday night, but the '99 Rams lost their starting QB to injury and won a Super Bowl five months later, so unusual things can happen.

    1) Broncos—You don’t lose the top spot because of a 39-33 loss at Indy; at one point, when down 19, Denver was 200-1 to win the game; 20 minutes later, they were 1.35-1, before the INT when they were down 36-30. In-game wagering is wild.

Cardinals at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Boston Red Sox (-125, 7)

      Boston leads series 1-0.

The St. Louis Cardinals displayed some nerves in the field during the first game of the World Series and were bitten by errors in a loss. The Cardinals will look to clean up those mistakes when they visit the Boston Red Sox for Game 2 on Thursday. The Red Sox are riding a nine-game World Series winning streak and showed no jitters while jumping on top early in Game 1.

Mike Napoli followed an error with a three-run double in the first inning Wednesday and Boston got the aid of another error in a two-run second to jump in front of St. Louis. One of the best plays the Cardinals did make in the early innings came from Carlos Beltran, who reached into the bullpen in right field to rob David Ortiz of a grand slam. Beltran suffered a right rib contusion on that catch and was forced to leave the game, though, leaving his status in doubt for Game 2.

      TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 40s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing west at 9 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (3-0, 0.43 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH John Lackey (2-0, 3.00)

Wacha was the NLCS MVP after tossing 13 2/3 scoreless innings over two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 22-year-old rookie allowed a total of one run on eight hits over 21 innings this postseason while striking out 22 and issuing four walks. Wacha made both NLCS starts at home and posted a 4.34 ERA in five games - three starts - on the road during the regular season while going 3-2.

Lackey was moved up to the No. 2 spot for the World Series after dominating the Detroit Tigers through 6 2/3 scoreless innings in the ALCS. The veteran struck out eight and did not walk a batter in that turn, outdueling Justin Verlander in a 1-0 triumph. Lackey last pitched in the World Series as a rookie for the Los Angeles Angels in 2002, when he went 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA in three games - two starts.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings in Boston.
      * Cardinals are 2-7 in their last nine playoff road games.
      * Red Sox are 9-0 in their last 9 World Series games.
