College football odds: Week 8 opening line report

Week 8 of the NCAA football schedule brings us a dream matchup in the ACC as the Clemson Tigers (6-0 SU, 3-3 ATS) host the Florida State Seminoles (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS).

Both teams are undefeated and feature quarterbacks who find themselves in the thick of the Heisman race.

'Noles QB Jameis Winston has been sensational all season and is second in the country with a 213.9 QB rating.

Florida State will be fresh off a bye week as they head to South Carolina and absolutely hammered Maryland 63-0 in their last effort.

Clemson has its own Heisman hopeful in QB Tajh Boyd. The Tigers defeated Boston College 24-14 to improve to a perfect 6-0 Saturday.

According to Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, he and his team of oddsmakers sent out Florida State as the fave but he believes the home team is the team to beat here.

"We put out Florida State -1.5 but I'm not so sure they should be the favorite," Korner told Covers. "Clemson will show up and being at home, there's no reason they can't win this one straight up. Initial offshore money was on FSU that drove this to -3 but we're not convinced of that. We started lower and expect the money to come our way."

Auburn Tigers at Texas A&M Aggies (-15)

Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) just keep on rolling. But while the Aggies' defense leaves plenty to be desired, offense is the name of the game at College Station.

The Aggies are fourth in the country averaging 47.8 points per game on offense and face an Auburn Tigers (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) team that features a very stingy defense and potent rushing attack.

"With A&M and Manziel, I usually go with whoever has the highest number but after they squeaked by in their last game, we may not have to," Korner said. "Fortunately, we were all close in this one with a low of -14 and a high of -15.5. We made it -15 and hope Auburn will keep up."

Florida Gators at Missouri Tigers (+2.5)

It has been a spectacular season for the SEC East leading Missouri Tigers (6-0 SU, 5-0-1 ATS).

The Tigers 41-26 victory at No. 7 Georgia should be what everyone is talking about. But it's the injury to senior-QB James Franklin that is stealing headlines.

Franklin will reportedly miss at least six weeks after he left the game with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter Saturday.

Korner states that Mizzou would be the fave with Franklin in the lineup, but had to give the edge to the visiting Gators (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) for this SEC matchup.

"Franklin is out and that's pretty big so this week's line is a test of who can figure out how much he's worth," says Korner. "With him in, Missouri is definitely a small favorite but we switched it up and made Florida the -2.5 point favorite. Have to roll the dice in this one."

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal (-4)

A very interesting battle in the Pac-12 that would have been even more interesting if Utah didn't burst Stanford's bubble Saturday.

The Cardinal (5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) dropped their first game by a score of 27-21 to the Utes but still open as faves with the visiting UCLA Bruins (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) in town.

The Bruins sit first the South division of the Pac-12 and have an unblemished 5-0 ATS mark on the season.

Korner and his team were unanimous on this one with the Cardinal getting the edge.

"Didn't have much to discuss in this one as everyone had Stanford -4," confirmed Korner. "We'll see how Stanford reacts after their upset loss at Utah."

NCAAF line watch: Florida State backers sit tight

Each week during the college football season, renowned Las Vegas wiseguy and Covers Expert Bruce Marshall looks at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later, and which total to watch as the week plays out.

      Spread to bet now

Connecticut Huskies at Cincinnati Bearcats (-14)

There are a handful of games each week in which the only moves in one particular direction are going to come at the outset. Such as last week’s Hawaii-UNLV game, when the “sharps” moved the initial price in the Rebels’ direction, then watched as the public gradually shoved the line the other way the rest of the week.

This week’s example of a team “only the sharps could love” is troubled and winless UConn, which surprisingly generated enough early action at +16 for this Saturday’s American clash at Cincinnati that the price quickly dipped as low as 14 at many Nevada wagering outlets.

In truth, however, the burst of early Huskies’ money was probably more of a reaction to perceived overvalue on the part of Tommy Tuberville’s Cincy, which has dropped four of its last five against the spread after opening with a lopsided win over Purdue, a result that in retrospect perhaps distorted the perception of the Bearcats.

But Cincy’s failure to cover in three straight versus teams all winless at the time (Miami-Ohio, South Florida, and Temple) has understandably soured the marketplace (and, apparently, the sharp money) on the Bearcats.

We suspect the early move on this Saturday’s game was almost completely due to the growing anti-Cincinnati sentiment among the sharps.

The public money, however, might not share the same degree of misgiving about the Bearcats, and is instead more likely to react to the negative news surrounding UConn, which has not only changed coaches in midstream (Paul Pasqualoni out, o.c. T.J. Weist promoted to interim HC), but has also switched QBs.

Indeed, Weist’s first move was benching incumbent starter Chandler Whitmer and replacing him with true frosh Tim Boyle, who proceeded to complete only 15 of his 43 pass attempts in his first start last Saturday against USF.

Series trends between these sides also heavily favor the home team, which has covered seven of the last eight meetings.

The bottom line is that we foresee no further money moves in UConn’s direction. There are enough 14s currently posted at Las Vegas books for Cincy-inclined backers to take advantage ASAP at the current reduced price before the spread inevitably moves above that key number later in the week.

      Spread to wait on

Florida State Seminoles (-3) at Clemson Tigers

It has been a while since the nation has been as transfixed upon an ACC gridiron battle as it will for this Saturday’s FSU at Clemson tussle. Expect action to be brisk at the Las Vegas sports books for this clash with not only ACC, but BCS and even Heisman Trophy ramifications.

Early movement in this price was hard to detect, but it’s what we didn’t see that caught our attention. Specifically, there was not enough appetite for the Seminoles among the sharps or the first wave of public money to move the price above the key number of FSU -3. In fact, for a short while there were a few stray 2.5s popping up in the marketplace, but for the most part there has been no early movement off of the key number of 3.

All of this is illuminating, suggesting the Tigers have earned a degree of respect in the marketplace. While Clemson’s spread form has been indifferent in recent weeks, and the Tigers were involved in an unexpected scrap last Saturday vs. Boston College, most of the public money will be recalling Clemson’s rousing opener against SEC rep Georgia, a game in which the Tigers prevailed in exciting fashion. Along with the Chick-fil-A Bowl win over LSU last New Year’s Eve, Dabo Swinney’s squad has been making a positive impression in recent high-profile games.

Indicators are that Seminole backers probably don’t have to worry about the price at Death Valley to rise above the key number of 3. But there figures to be ample opportunity to lay less than 3 as the week progresses, so we suggest that FSU backers ought to sit tight and wait for opportunities to play this game beneath a very key number later in the week.

      Total to watch

Central Florida Knights at Louisville Cardinals

Though the totals market is generally a bit thinner than the straight-bet board, oddsmakers are nonetheless sensitive to those Over and Under trends as well. Most definitely, the books do not want to continue getting beat by the same totals trends, which the sharp money can ruthlessly capitalize upon.

Which is why the oddsmakers no longer waste any time with “soft totals” that can be moved quickly in one direction. The books usually have an idea in which direction the totals money is likely to flow, so they will adjust the prices almost from the outset.

Posting Oregon and Baylor totals into the stratosphere from the outset are examples this season of the books proactively protecting themselves from too much exposure on one side of the total wagers which are more likely to be exploited by sharp money.

Along that line of thought, oddsmakers know totals results patterns as well as pointspread result trends, and while we have not seen as many pronounced totals trends yet this season, a couple of the primo Under teams do get together on Friday night at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium as Louisville plays host to UCF in an American showdown.

No one needs to remind the books that the Cardinals are Under 5-1 this season, and the Knights are 4-1 to the Under as well.

Knowing that such trends can develop a quick following, don’t be surprised if the first total you see on ‘Ville-UCF is a bit lower than might be expected.

UL Lafayette at Western Kentucky: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (-4.5, 62.5)

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns may not be nationally ranked, but their high-powered offense is. The Ragin' Cajuns look to build on their three-game winning streak Tuesday night as they visit the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference showdown. Louisiana-Lafayette is coming off a 48-24 drubbing of Texas State 10 days ago, while Western Kentucky is also on a high following a 31-10 victory over host Louisiana-Monroe back on Oct. 3.

Fans should expect plenty of fireworks in this one, with the teams averaging a combined 70 points per game. The Ragin' Cajuns are led by junior quarterback Terrance Broadway, who has thrown for 10 touchdowns over the opening five games while completing nearly two-thirds of his passes. The Hilltoppers are led by running back Antonio Andrews, who ranks second in the nation with 882 rushing yards and is tied for third with nine touchdowns on the ground.

            TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

LINE: The Hilltoppers opened as four-point favorites, with the line rising slightly to -4.5. The over/under has held steady at 62.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the high-60s with a 32 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms. Wind will blow diagonally out of the south at 3 mph.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE (3-2, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference): Broadway has had a tough act to follow after Blaine Gautier left following the 2012 season - but the hard-throwing QB is rewriting school record books on a weekly basis. He racked up 335 passing yards in the Oct. 5 win over Texas State, his sixth career 300-yard performance. That moved him past Gautier and former NFLer Jake Delhomme for the most 300-yard games in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform. Standout wide receiver Jamal Robinson has caught six of Broadway's 10 TD passes this season.

ABOUT WESTERN KENTUCKY (4-2, 1-1): The Hilltoppers know all about Broadway's credentials - he lit them up for 258 passing yards and another 145 on the ground in last year's 31-27 Louisiana-Lafayette victory. "They have a quarterback who can throw it down the field and then when you cover everybody, he'll take off and run," head coach Bobby Petrino told the Louisville Courier-Journal. "That's probably the biggest challenge. he makes plays with his legs." Andrews isn't bad himself; the senior star has 550 rushing yards and eight touchdowns over his past three games.

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 5-0 in Western Kentucky's last five games following a SU win of 20 or more points.
            * Over is 4-1-1 in Louisiana-Lafayette's last six conference games.
            * Hilltoppers are 8-1 in their last nine October games.
            * Ragin' Cajuns are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games against teams with winning records.

            EXTRA POINTS:

            1. Andrews had 342 yards and three touchdowns in two games against the Ragin' Cajuns in 2012.

            2. The teams have split their last four meetings, with each club winning once at home and once on the road.

            3. Louisiana-Lafayette has outscored opponents 153-61 during its winning streak.

Only team they've beaten was 3-4 Middle Tennessee. Miami is one of 14 unbeaten teams left in country; they won only road game 49-21 at South Florida, and gave up 335 rushing yards to Georgia Tech's option game, but they pulled away late for 45-30 win. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Hurricanes at North Carolina Tar Heels (+9.5, 64.5)

Miami takes its No. 11 ranking and seven-game winning streak to North Carolina for a prime-time ACC matchup with the Tar Heels on Thursday night. North Carolina will have Bryn Renner back under center after he sat out a 27-17 loss at No. 20 Virginia Tech with a foot injury, but the Tar Heels will be hard-pressed to get the air game going against Miami's stiff pass defense. The Tar Heels haven't beaten a ranked team since knocking off No. 24 Florida State in 2010.

The Hurricanes are facing their first big road test and expect a hostile environment under the lights, regardless of North Carolina's early struggles. "We're going to be facing a great challenge and an excellent team on Thursday night," Miami coach Al Golden told reporters. "Records really don't matter. Records are talking about the past. We know what type of team we're going to see." The Tar Heels have won four of the past six meetings, including an 18-14 victory last year in Miami.

                TV: 7:45 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Miami opened as an 8-point favorite and has been bet up to -9.5. The total opened at 63.5 and moved to 64.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 60s with a 24 percent chances of rain and winds blow WSW at 4 mph.

ABOUT MIAMI (5-0, 1-0 ACC Coastal, 4-1 ATS): The Hurricanes boast one of the best pass defenses in the nation as they have allowed only two passing touchdowns - the fewest in the country - and have recorded 18 sacks. The offense has been equally impressive recently as Miami has put up 40 or more points in three straight games and looks to make it four straight for the first time since 1987. The Hurricanes have been balanced with Stephen Morris (950 pass yards, nine touchdowns, four interceptions) and Duke Johnson (572 rushing yards, four TDs) leading the way.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (1-4, 0-2, 1-4 ATS): The Tar Heels have struggled on both sides of the ball in coach Larry Fedora's second season, dropping three straight since a 40-20 victory over Middle Tennessee. North Carolina has gained at least 400 total yards in 14 of 17 games under Fedora but only two of five games this season. The offense is still loaded with potential, though, with tight end Eric Ebron (23 catches, 333 yards, two touchdowns) and receiver Quinshad Davis (19 catches, 298 yards, four TDs) giving Renner a pair of terrific targets.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in North Carolina.
                * Underdog is 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine meetings.
                * Hurricanes are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall.
                * Tar Heels are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

                EXTRA POINTS:

                1. Miami is 15-3 all-time in Thursday night games on ESPN while North Carolina is 6-5, including a 27-10 season-opening loss at South Carolina this year.

                2. North Carolina has made 189 consecutive extra-point attempts - the second-longest active streak in the nation (Texas Tech, 239) - over a span of 55 games.

                3. Morris needs 184 yards to become the sixth 6,000-yard passer in school history and 243 yards to pass Vinny Testaverde (6,058) for fourth on Miami's all-time list.

UCF at Louisville: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Florida Knights at Louisville Cardinals (-12, 53)

Louisville didn’t silence the critics of its schedule with a difficult home win in its most recent performance, but will attempt to remain among the 14 unbeaten teams in FBS on Friday when it hosts Central Florida. The sixth-ranked Cardinals are coming off a 24-10 victory against Rutgers, one of the two teams they have faced with a winning record. Louisville’s opponents have combined to go 13-23, while none of the six remaining teams left on the schedule are ranked in the Top 25.

Cardinals quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had an off-day by his lofty standards last Thursday, committing two turnovers while leading the offense to its lowest point total of the season. He may not catch much of a break against the Knights, who allow 16.6 points per game – good for the second-best mark in the American Athletic Conference. Central Florida has its own prolific signal-caller in Blake Bortles, who ranks second in the conference behind Bridgewater in passing efficiency (160.4).

                  TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Louisville opened as a 10.5-point fave and is now -12. The total is currently 53.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the high-50s with partly cloudy skies.

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (4-1, 1-0 AAC): While they only have one win against a ranked team in school history, the Knights have established themselves as a quality foe (34-31 win at Penn State, 28-25 home loss against South Carolina). Although Central Florida ranks fourth in the conference in passing offense, wide receivers Breshad Perriman (fourth) and Rannell Hall (eighth) are among the top 10 in receiving yards. Perriman and Hall have combined for five of the team’s six 100-yard receiving efforts, the school’s most since 2006.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (6-0, 2-0): With the Cardinals’ vaunted offense unable to score at least 30 points for the first time this season, the defense collected four interceptions (most in a game since 2000), eight sacks and held Rutgers to 12 yards rushing. Louisville has allowed 12 yards rushing or fewer two times over the last three games and a total of 63 yards on the ground over that same stretch. The Cardinals are yielding an FBS-low 7.3 points and 229.5 total yards per game, good for second in FBS.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Knights are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
                  * Under is 19-7 in Cardinals last 26 games in October.
                  * Cardinals are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Friday games.
                  * Under is 5-1 in Knights last six games overall.

                  EXTRA POINTS:

                  1. The Knights (tied for sixth, plus-1.4) and Cardinals (tied for eighth, plus-1.33) each rank in the top 10 in the FBS in turnover margin.

                  2. Central Florida won its first three road contests for the first time in school history.

                  3. Louisville WRs DeVante Parker (shoulder) – the team’s top receiver who missed the Rutgers game – and Kai De La Cruz (groin) will be game-time decisions.

                      Week 8

                      Saturday's games
                      Top 13 games

Home side won last six Florida State-Clemson games; Seminoles lost last five visits to Death Valley, and they were favored in three of five games. Underdogs are 6-4 in last ten series games. FSU scored 41+ points in all five games this year, scoring 41-48 in first two road games for frosh QB Winston, who is very good. Since 2008, Clemson is 1-3 as an home dog- their cover vs Georgia in season opener was its first as home dog since '07. FSU is 1-6 vs spread in last seven tries as a road favorite- they had last week off, while Clemson is playing for fifth week in a row.

West Virginia scored 42 points in last game as 29-point dogs and did not cover, losing 73-42 at Baylor; WV is 2-0 as home dog this year, 3-1 with Holgorsen as HC-- he was WR coach at Texas Tech when Kingsbury was Tech's QB; now he's Tech's coach. Mountaineers lost in Lubbock 49-14 (+3.5) LY, as Tech outgained them 676-408, going 33-43 for 508 passing yards. Red Raiders won 41-23/54-16 ion only road games this year, they're 13-3-1 in last 17 tries as road favorites. TCU was the only team to hold them under 33 points and 400 passing yards.

Texas A&M (-14) gained 671 TY and waxed Auburn 63-21 LY; Aggies are 4-3 as home favorites with Manziel at QB; they've scored 42-42-45-41 points in last four games, but they've allowed 33+ points in three of four games and gave up 28 to I-AA Sam Houston State. Auburn is 3-7 in last 10 games as road dog, covering 35-21 (+17) at LSU in only road tilt this year. QB Marshall sat out last week vs I-AA foe, is expected to go here; doubtful he is good enough passer to match points on road with a prolific A&M offense. Aggies are 14-10 as home favorites since '09.

South Carolina won its last three games with Tennessee by 3-11-14, as road team covered last three series games; Gamecocks split last four in Knoxville, winning 16-15/14-3; they beat Vols 38-35 at home LY, with total yardage in game 510-472. Carolina had allowed 25+ points in four straight games before crushing Arkansas 52-7 on road last week; SEC is 8-6-2 as road favorites under Spurrier. Tennessee lost three of last four games, giving up 59-31-34 points to three quality teams they've played. Vols are 2-9 as a home underdog the last 5+ years.

Washington comes off 45-24 home loss to Oregon last week, its biggest game of year; they've lost last seven games with Arizona State, dropping last four visits here, by 7-24-24-11 points. Huskies are 9-18 vs spread in last 27 tries as a road dog, covering 31-28 (+7) in tough loss at Stanford two weeks ago. ASU is +12 in turnovers in last seven series games; they scored 62-54 points in last two home games, are 6-2 as home favorites under Graham, 2-1 this year. U-Dub allowed 214.3 rushing yards/game the last three weeks. ASU had 536 rushing yards in its last two games.

Missouri is off to magical 6-0 start, scoring 38+ points in every game, but QB Franklin is now out for year so Tigers turn to redshirt freshman Mauk, who is making first college start here. Florida is 13-5 vs spread in last 18 games as a road favorite, 1-1 this year; they got upset at Miami, won 24-7 at Kentucky, lost 17-6 at LSU as they're playing their backup QB too, with Driskel hurt. Mizzou is 2-5 in last seven games as a road underdog; their schedule had been very easy until winning at banged-up Georgia last week. Tigers (+18) lost 14-7 in Gainesville LY.

LSU won nine of last 11 games with Ole Miss, winning last three in row by average score of 45-25; Tigers won five of last six visits here, winning four of five by 11+ points, going 2-2 as road favorite- they're on road for third time in four weeks, splitting pair at Georgia (L41-44), Miss State (W59-26). Rebels allowed 32.8 ppg in losing three of first four games in SEC; they allowed 30-41 points last two weeks and star DE Nkemdiche (leg) is out for this game. Since '09, Ole Miss is 4-8 as a home underdog, covering only try this year in 41-38 loss to Texas A&M last week.

Oklahoma State (-6.5) beat TCU 36-14 LY, outgaining Frogs 471-344, as Cowboys averaged just under 10 yards per pass attempt. State is 20-8-1 as a home favorite since '08, failing to cover in only such try this year (beat K-State 33-29, -13). TCU covered seven of last nine tries as a road underdog; they lost 20-10 at Texas Tech, 20-17 at Oklahoma in only two true road games this season, and also lost 37-27 to LSU in Dallas, kind of a home game for TCU but really a neutral site. OSU allowed 30-29 in last two games; 369 passing yards they gave up to UTSA is red flag.

Stanford won last five games with UCLA, with four wins by 8+; Bruins lost last three visits here by 3-26-8 points, in series where favorites are 6-2 vs spread in last eight meetings. 5-0 UCLA has wins at Nebraska and Utah this year, scoring 41-34 points; they're 3-0 as road dogs with Mora as HC. Cardinal got upset last wek at Utah, week after winning 31-28 at home over Washington; Stanford is 7-9 as home favorite since Shaw has been coach, 17-15 since Harbaugh turned program around. Last 3+ years, Cardinal is 1-3 vs spread in the game following a loss.

Notre Dame won two of last three games with USC; road team won last four series games (underdogs 3-1 vs spread). Trojans won last five visits here, scoring 31+ points in all five games, but they're 0-6 in last six tries as a road favorite. USC ran ball for 247-249 yards last two games, will be trying to keep its porous pass defense (allowed 351-363 passing yards last couple of games) off field. Irish gave up 35-34 points in last two games, beating Arizona State 37-34, same ASU squad that hung 62 on USC in Kiffin's last game. Irish are 7-10-3 as home favorite under Kelly.

Wisconsin won seven of last eight games with Illinois, winning three in a row, all by 10+ points; Badgers won three of last four visits here, with wins by 11-17-18 points. Illini allowed 34-39 points in its two games vs quality teams and also gave up 34 to I-AA SIU; they've covered five of last six tries as a home underdog. Wisconsin allowed 16 points in its four home wins, but gave up 32-31 points in losing both road games; Badgers is 5-7-1 as road favorites the last four years. Illini allowed 273-335 yards on ground in losses to Washington/Nebraska; Badgers will run it here.

Georgia played tough games with LSU-Tennessee-Mizzou the last three weeks, they're very banged up as they head to Nashville to play Vandy squad they've beaten 15 of last 16 times, winning last six in row, with three of last four wins by 24+ points. Dawgs won last eight visits here, but are 2-3 vs spread in last five; six of their last eight wins here were by 10+ points. Dawgs allowed 30+ points in five of six games; they're 0-2 as road favorites this year, after being 7-3 from '09-'12. Vandy is 4-2 as home underdogs under Franklin- they also had last week off.

Road team won both Utah-Arizona Pac-12 games, in series where faves are 1-5 vs spread in last six meetings. Utah is +11 in turnovers last four times they played Arizona; Utes won only road game 20-13 at BYU in rivalry game, then split tough home games with UCLA/Stanford- they're 5-4 in last nine tries as road dogs. Arizona allowed 31-38 points in losing first two Pac-12 games; they're 8-10 in last 18 games as home favorites, 3-4 under RichRod. Wildcats allowed 244-249 rushing yards in last two games; don't think Utes have running game to exploit that weakness.

                          Saturday, October 19

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Florida at Missouri: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Gators at Missouri Tigers (+3, 43.5)

Just when Missouri announced itself as a contender in the SEC, it lost its starting quarterback. The 14th-ranked Tigers will try to get by without James Franklin when they host No. 22 Florida on Saturday. Missouri picked up a signature win with a strong performance on both sides of the ball at Georgia last week but lost Franklin to a shoulder injury for at least three weeks, leaving the quarterback spot to Maty Mauk.

Mauk went 3-for-3 in backup duty in the 41-26 victory over Georgia but will be making his first start Saturday. The Gators own the fourth-ranked scoring defense in the nation but failed to get anything done on offense last week in a 17-6 setback at LSU. The Tigers are the lone team left in the SEC East still undefeated in the division, with Florida right behind them at 3-1 in conference play.

                          TV: 12:21 p.m. ET, ESPN3.

LINE: The Gators opened as 3-point road faves. The total opened at 44 and is down to 43.5.

WEATHER: There is a 29 percent chance of rain with wind blowing across the field at 6 mph.

ABOUT FLORIDA (4-2, 3-1 SEC): The Gators will not have much sympathy for the Tigers and their quarterback loss because of their own set of injuries that ravaged the offense. Running back Matt Jones is the latest to go down after suffering a season-ending knee injury against LSU and will take his place on the sideline next to quarterback Jeff Driskel, who went down for the season on Sept. 21. Tyler Murphy took over for Driskel and was solid in his first two starts before struggling to 15-for-27 for 115 yards last week.

ABOUT MISSOURI (6-0, 2-0): The Tigers put together one of the top offenses in the country behind Franklin, putting up an average of 45.7 points and failing to top 40 only once. Missouri shocked the Bulldogs last week defensively as well, forcing four turnovers, and needs one more interception to double its total from last season (seven). Mauk was an All-American in high school and also starred in track and field, which should allow the Tigers to keep the running packages that made Franklin dangerous in place.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Gators are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a S.U. loss.

                          3. The Tigers are looking for their first 7-0 start since 2010.

UCLA at Stanford: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal (-4.5, 53)

Unbeaten UCLA, ranked 10th nationally, has a chance to get itself into the national championship picture over the next two Saturdays but the visiting Bruins first must defeat No. 13 Stanford on Saturday. The Cardinal are in a must-win situation themselves after falling to Utah last week and can’t afford to drop two games in the loss column behind Oregon in the Pac-12 North. UCLA leads the Pac-12 South and visits the Ducks on Oct. 26.

Stanford defeated UCLA twice last season in a seven-day span – winning 35-17 at the Rose Bowl in the regular season before posting a 27-24 home win in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The Bruins are off to their first 5-0 start since winning the first eight games of the 2005 season. Cardinal coach David Shaw doesn't want the Utah loss – one that snapped the program’s 13-game winning streak – to be viewed as a season-changing defeat. “We’re still in a battle for our [division] to try to get to the conference championship game,” Shaw said.

                            TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN2.

LINE: Stanford opened as a 6.5-point fave and is now -4.5. The total opened at 54 and is down to 53.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-70s with clear skies over Stanford Stadium.

ABOUT UCLA (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12): Sophomore quarterback Brett Hundley is thriving with 1,469 yards and 12 touchdowns and his 410-yard effort in last week’s victory over California was the third-highest output in school history behind Cade McNown (513 in 1998) and Drew Olson (510 in 2005). Running back Jordon James (463 yards, five touchdowns) is averaging 6.3 yards per carry for an offense averaging 45.8 points and 547 yards per game. The Bruins are allowing 18.2 points per game with outside linebacker Anthony Barr racking up 10 tackles for loss (including four sacks) and forcing three fumbles while defensive end Keenan Graham has recorded a team-high five sacks.

ABOUT STANFORD (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12): The loss to Utah marked the initial defeat in 11 career starts for quarterback Kevin Hogan, who has passed for 1,178 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. Tyler Gaffney (570 yards, seven touchdowns) has proven that giving up minor-league baseball to return to football was a good move, and Ty Montgomery (31 receptions, 514 yards) continues to be a force as both a receiver and returner – leading the nation with a 37.3 kickoff-return average. Defensive leader Shane Skov – an inside linebacker – has six tackles for loss among his team-high 52 stops and outside linebacker Trent Murphy leads the team with eight tackles for loss and five sacks.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Bruins are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
                            * Bruins are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
                            * Over is 9-2 in Cardinal last 11 games following a S.U. loss.
                            * Cardinal are 19-8-1 ATS in their last 28 conference games.

                            EXTRA POINTS:

                            1. The Bruins lead the series 45-36-3, but have lost the last five meetings.

                            2. UCLA is outscoring its opponents 71-0 in the third quarter.

                            3. Stanford has nine three-and-out drives in its last two games after having a total of nine over its four contests.

Florida State at Clemson: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida State Seminoles at Clemson Tigers (+3, 64)

The date marked on many calendars comes Saturday when No. 4 Clemson hosts No. 5 Florida State in an ACC showdown of undefeated rivals. The matchup has determined the division champion the past four years and this season's winner will remain a central figure in the national championship discussion. "It's the biggest game of the year, just like last week was the biggest game of the year," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters. "They're all big. Some have special circumstances attached to them like this one."

While both teams boast exciting offenses - and quarterbacks Tajh Boyd and Jameis Winston are among the national leaders in several passing categories - they also rank in the top 10 in the nation in scoring defense with Florida State (12 points per game) third and Clemson (16.2) 10th. The Seminoles haven't won at Clemson since 2001 and the home team has won 10 of the past 11 meetings. Florida State rallied in the second half for a 49-37 victory last year in Tallahassee.

                              TV: 8:22 p.m. ET, ABC.

LINE: Florida State opened at -2.5 and moved to -3, however, some Las Vegas books are dealing FSU -1. The total moved from 63.5 to 64.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing west at 5 mph.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (5-0, 2-0 ACC, 4-1 ATS): Winston has been immune to typical freshman mistakes as he ranks second in the nation in passing efficiency and has thrown only two interceptions, helping the Seminoles lead the nation with just three giveaways. Florida State ranks fourth in the country in total offense (549 yards per game) and has racked up 400 or more total yards in 14 of its last 19 contests. The defense has been equally impressive and is coming off its best showing of the season in a 63-0 rout of Maryland two weeks ago, holding the Terrapins to 234 total yards.

ABOUT CLEMSON (6-0, 4-0, 3-3 ATS): With Boyd (1,783 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, two interceptions) back at the helm, the Tigers' offense has been everything it was expected to be. Boyd boasts the best career passing efficiency mark in ACC history and has a bevy of receiving options as 11 players have caught touchdown passes. The Tigers' defense has been a surprising strength, though, holding five straight opponents to 14 points or fewer and limiting Boston College star Andre Williams to 70 yards on 24 carries in a 24-14 victory last week.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                              * Home team is 12-3 ATS in their last 15 meetings.
                              * Seminoles are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
                              * Seminoles are 0-8 ATS in their last eight meetings in Clemson.

                              EXTRA POINTS:

                              1. Boyd, already Clemson's career passing leader, needs 164 yards to become the third quarterback in ACC history to reach 10,000 (Philip Rivers 13,484; Thaddeus Lewis 10,065).

                              2. No visiting team starting a freshman quarterback has won at Clemson since Tyrod Taylor and Virginia Tech in 2007.

                              3. Clemson has won 11 straight ACC games by double digits dating to last year's loss at Florida State. The Seminoles have won nine straight conference games - seven of them by double digits.
