    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way.

    Most popular (8-27-1 vs spread)

    1) Steelers 320 - W
    2) Saints 313 - L
    3) Raiders 284 - L
    4) Colts 271 -
    5) Redskins 257 - L
    6) Texans 227 - L

    Least popular (21-14-1)

    32) Broncos 47- L
    31) Rams 59 - W
    29) Chiefs 75 - W
    27) Titans 79 - W
    26) 49ers 94 - W
    25) Bengals 115 - L

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday.........

    13) Steelers 19, Jets 6-- Huge sigh of relief from western Pennsylvania; in their three losses, Jets are -10 in turnovers; they're -1 in their three wins. Pitt was -11 (0-11) in turnovers coming in, +2 here; teams that were +2 or better in turnovers this week are 6-0 SU and against the spread.

    12) Chiefs 24, Raiders 7-- Can we just name Andy Reid Coach of the Year already? Chiefs were 2-14 LY, are 6-0 now; they've shut out three of their six opponents in second half, are +12 in turnovers for season and have scored a TD on defense or special teams in five of their six games.

Chiefs had 10 sacks in this game; the other 27 teams who played this week have averaged 2.3 sacks per game. .

    11) Eagles 31, Bucs 20-- Worst coiaches in NFL history: Lou Holtz quit as coach of the Jets before the last game of a 3-11 season in 1976; Les Steckel's 3-13 season coaching Minnesota was so awful that Bud Grant came out of retirement to coach again. Marty Mornhinweg was 5-27 in two dismal years in Detroit, but he had an excuse: Matt Millen was the GM.

Enter Greg Schiano, who will go down as one of the great disasters in NFL history; he treated NFL scouts like dirt when he coached Rutgers, now NFL teams are smacking his Buccaneers around like a cheap pinata. Lovie Smith is warming up in the bullpen to take over for Schiano next year. .

    10) Packers 19, Ravens 17-- Baltimore has allowed one TD in three home games, but Pack's only TD was enough to win here. In Green Bay's first three games, they scored nine TDs, kicked three FGs in 13 red zone drives. In their last two games, they kicked five FGs on five red zone drives. Packers have run ball run for 167.7 yards/game in last three games.

    9) Lions 31, Browns 17-- I pay a decent amount of cash for DirecTV's NFL package, but if I want the Red Zone channel, I have to give them more money, for Sunday Ticket Plus, or some such rubbish. There is no limit to the greed of some people. For the record, I didn't buy the Red Zone channel, so there is occasionally some limit to my being gullible. Not often though.

    8) Panthers 35, Vikings 10-- Our thoughts/prayers go out to the Peterson family, after their little boy was murdered. I'm adamant that if he is guilty, the guy who killed the little boy should be tortured before he is executed so he has to experience the maximum anount of pain.

As for the game, Minnesota has a huge QB problem and Carolina has a strong record after a loss.

    7) Rams 38, Texans 13-- Solid afternoon for my favorite team, but hard to believe the Kubiak regime will survive this debacle, thats how bad Houston was in this game, turning ball over four times. Texan fans weren't too classy when they cheered injured QB Schaub-- losing can do that to you. .

    6) Bengals 27, Bills 24 OT-- Buffalo's four home games have been decided by total of nine points; Thad Lewis was decent in his second NFL start, but he sprained his foot and may be out. Not many teams score 20+ points in their first six games and wind up with a 2-4 start-- not good.

    5) Seahawks 20, Titans 13-- If you missed last play of the first half in this game, don't worry; you'll see it on NFL Network in follies films for the next 40-50 years. Seattle's kicker broke his nose so the punter tried a FG on last play of the half, only the new holder botches the snap, makes like Garo Yepremian in the Miami-Redskin Super Bowl and Tennessee scores gift TD on the last play of the first half.

\If you laid 13 in this game, the gambling gods owe you one.

    4) Broncos 35, Jaguars 19-- Since 1976, NFL favorites of 20+ points are now 1-8 against the spread. Peyton Manning goes back to Indy next Sunday night to play his old team. I'm guessing he won't throw a pick-6 then, like he did in this snoozer of a game. Denver was sleepwalking and won by 16.

    3) 49ers 32, Cardinals 20-- So I get up earlier than usual Sunday to watch the ESPN fantasy football shows and try to be diligent about my team; they tell me not to play Larry Fitzgerald, because there were rumblings out of the desert that his hamstring wasn't good. I'm a good listener; I bench #11, then he goes out and grabs six balls for 117 yards and a TD. Sleeping late next week.

    2) Patriots 30, Saints 27-- Brees was 17-36 passing, 0-6 when he targeted Graham; at some point on his flight home, Payton will swear to be aggressive with the ball the next time he is protecting a lead. 36-year old Brady is doing amazing things with Arena League-level WRs; it really is interesting.

    1) Cowboys 31, Redskins 16-- Washington's special teams were putrid in this game; Dallas had a PR for TD, a 90-yard KR, they missed a FG and the nitwit special teams coach got a 15-yard penalty for running into an offical on the sideline during the punt return TD. RGIII doesn't look like the same guy he was last year. You expected more out of them coming off a bye.

Hey if Lane Kiffin fired his dad at USC, couldn't Mike Shanahan fire his kid? If Houston fires Gary Kubiak, will Shanahan bring him to Washington to help tutor young Griffin and bail out the overmatched Kyle Shanahan?

College football odds: Week 8 opening line report

Week 8 of the NCAA football schedule brings us a dream matchup in the ACC as the Clemson Tigers (6-0 SU, 3-3 ATS) host the Florida State Seminoles (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS).

Both teams are undefeated and feature quarterbacks who find themselves in the thick of the Heisman race.

'Noles QB Jameis Winston has been sensational all season and is second in the country with a 213.9 QB rating.

Florida State will be fresh off a bye week as they head to South Carolina and absolutely hammered Maryland 63-0 in their last effort.

Clemson has its own Heisman hopeful in QB Tajh Boyd. The Tigers defeated Boston College 24-14 to improve to a perfect 6-0 Saturday.

According to Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, he and his team of oddsmakers sent out Florida State as the fave but he believes the home team is the team to beat here.

"We put out Florida State -1.5 but I'm not so sure they should be the favorite," Korner told Covers. "Clemson will show up and being at home, there's no reason they can't win this one straight up. Initial offshore money was on FSU that drove this to -3 but we're not convinced of that. We started lower and expect the money to come our way."

Auburn Tigers at Texas A&M Aggies (-15)

Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) just keep on rolling. But while the Aggies' defense leaves plenty to be desired, offense is the name of the game at College Station.

The Aggies are fourth in the country averaging 47.8 points per game on offense and face an Auburn Tigers (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) team that features a very stingy defense and potent rushing attack.

"With A&M and Manziel, I usually go with whoever has the highest number but after they squeaked by in their last game, we may not have to," Korner said. "Fortunately, we were all close in this one with a low of -14 and a high of -15.5. We made it -15 and hope Auburn will keep up."

Florida Gators at Missouri Tigers (+2.5)

It has been a spectacular season for the SEC East leading Missouri Tigers (6-0 SU, 5-0-1 ATS).

The Tigers 41-26 victory at No. 7 Georgia should be what everyone is talking about. But it's the injury to senior-QB James Franklin that is stealing headlines.

Franklin will reportedly miss at least six weeks after he left the game with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter Saturday.

Korner states that Mizzou would be the fave with Franklin in the lineup, but had to give the edge to the visiting Gators (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) for this SEC matchup.

"Franklin is out and that's pretty big so this week's line is a test of who can figure out how much he's worth," says Korner. "With him in, Missouri is definitely a small favorite but we switched it up and made Florida the -2.5 point favorite. Have to roll the dice in this one."

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal (-4)

A very interesting battle in the Pac-12 that would have been even more interesting if Utah didn't burst Stanford's bubble Saturday.

The Cardinal (5-1 SU, 2-4 ATS) dropped their first game by a score of 27-21 to the Utes but still open as faves with the visiting UCLA Bruins (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) in town.

The Bruins sit first the South division of the Pac-12 and have an unblemished 5-0 ATS mark on the season.

Korner and his team were unanimous on this one with the Cardinal getting the edge.

"Didn't have much to discuss in this one as everyone had Stanford -4," confirmed Korner. "We'll see how Stanford reacts after their upset loss at Utah."

Blue Bombers at Alouettes: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-11, 50.5)

The Montreal Alouettes are making the most of their playoff push with victories in each of their last two games. The Alouettes will clinch the final playoff spot with a win over the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Monday. Montreal's offense came alive last week as it scored a season-high 47 points on the strength of four touchdown passes by quarterback Josh Neiswander, who is likely to start again against Winnipeg.

The Blue Bombers have turned their attention to next season. Winnipeg, mired in a four-game losing skid, has scored 279 points - 61 fewer than any other team - and faith in quarterback Max Hall (81-for-139 for 974 yards, four touchdowns, eight interceptions) is quickly diminishing. Running back Will Ford has emerged as a bright spot in the Blue Bombers attack after running for a career-high 156 yards last week, but without a quarterback, Winnipeg will be in tough to win a third game before the regular season ends.

        TV: 1 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2-12): Winnipeg traded star defensive end and league sacks leader Alex Hall to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for non-import offensive lineman Patrick Neufeld and a draft pick. The move weakens the Blue Bombers already porous defense, which has allowed a league-worst 459 points. Linebacker Henoc Muamba is tied for second in the league with 86 tackles.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (6-8): Quarterback Anthony Calvillo said he will be healthy in time for the final game of the regular season. Montreal has struggled to find an identity on offense without the veteran pivot, who has not played since Week 8. Montreal’s defense, led by linebackers Chip Cox and Kyries Hebert, leads the league in interceptions with 22 and allows a league-low 82.6 rushing yards per game.

        TRENDS:

        * Blue Bombers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
        * Alouettes are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall.
        * Under is 8-3-1 in Alouettes last 12 home games.
        * Blue Bombers are 1-6 ATS in their last seveb games following a S.U. loss.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Cox - a potential candidate for most outstanding defensive player - leads the league with 90 tackles and has four interceptions and six sacks.

        2. Ford has 1,168 total combined yards in his second CFL season.

        3. Montreal and Winnipeg opened the season by splitting road victories in a home-and-home series.

Cardinals at Dodgers: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (+112, 6.5)

The Cardinals lead the series 2-0.

The St. Louis Cardinals withstood a Cy Young Award-winning 1-2 punch and can take a commanding lead when the National League Championship Series shifts to Los Angeles for Monday's Game 3 against the Dodgers. The Cardinals held serve at home behind young right-handers Joe Kelly and Michael Wacha and now have ace Adam Wainwright lined up for the first of three straight games - if necessary - in LA. Wainwright tied for the NL lead in wins and owns a 4-0 career postseason mark.

The Dodgers received a pair of gems from their top two pitchers, Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw, yet came away empty when they scored only two runs in Games 1 and 2. "With those two starts, you feel like you should walk out of there with no worse than a split," Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said. Los Angeles will send rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu out against Wainwright while hoping for good news on the medical front for shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who sat out Game 2 due to bruised ribs.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-70s with sunny skies. Wind will blow from LF to RF at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (19-9, 2.94 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-8, 3.00)

Ryu became the first Korean-born player to start a postseason game, but it was not a memorable outing when he lasted only three innings and allowed four runs on six hits against Atlanta in the NLDS. Ryu lost three of four starts in September, although he allowed a total of eight runs and received only five runs of support. He was outstanding in beating the Cardinals on Aug. 8. permitting one run on five hits and striking out seven in seven innings.

Wainwright continued to cement his legacy as the ultimate big-game pitcher by beating Pittsburgh twice in the NLDS, including a complete-game effort in a winner-take-all Game 5. He allowed one run on three hits over seven innings in the series opener versus Pittsburgh and is 6-0 over his last seven starts. Wainwright gave up three runs and seven hits at home to a loss to the Dodgers on Aug. 5 to fall to 4-4 with a 3.10 record in 13 appearances (10 starts) against them.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 4-1 in Wainwright's last five road starts vs. Dodgers.
          * Dodgers are 9-2 in their last 11 Monday games.
          * Dodgers are 5-0 in Ryus last five starts vs. National League Central.
          * Cardinals are 9-1 in their last 10 games following a win.

          UMP TRENDS - Mike Everitt:

          * Cardinals are 4-0 in their last four games with Everitt behind home plate.
          * Home team is 6-1 in Everitts last seven games behind home plate.
          * Home team is 21-5 in Everitts last 26 games behind home plate vs. St. Louis.

          WALK-OFFS:

1, The last team to rebound from an 0-2 deficit in the NLCS was the 1985 Cardinals, who accomplished it against ... the Dodgers.

          2. Los Angeles is scoreless in the last 19 innings and needs the bat of Ramirez, who batted .500 with one homer and six RBIs and an NLDS record-tying six extra-base hits versus Atlanta.

          3. St. Louis has a team batting average of .134 in the NLCS, the lowest in major-league history for any team that won the first two games of a postseason series.

NHL betting: Top 3 hot teams to start the season
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the NHL season settling in, we've seen some pleasant surprises across the league.

Here is a look at three teams that have been cashing in for bettors and surprising fans and pundits with their exceptional play out of the gate.

            Colorado Avalanche (5-0-0)

The Avs took a gamble and gave head coaching duties to legendary goalie Patrick Roy. Needless to say, that decision is paying off right out of the gate.

Colorado is playing with an attitude that harkens back to the playing days of their fiery coach.

The top line of Ryan O'Reilly, Matt Duchesne and Steve Downie has been as good as it gets, while goalie Semyon Varlamov leads the league in GAA (1.00) and save percentage (.970).

Any $100 bettor would be up $580.15 if they had wagered the Avs in each of their five games.

            Calgary Flames (3-0-2)

Nobody gave them a chance. The Flames, mired in a drastic rebuild for the past couple of seasons, still have yet to lose a game in regulation.

The offense is being paced by 19-year-old rookie Sean Monahan - who scored the game winner against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 11 and leads the squad with four goals.

The defense, however, leaves a lot to be desired and they still don't have a clear-cut number one goalie.

But for a team in a rebuild phase, this will do wonders for confidence.

Any $100 bettor would be up $189.15 if they had wagered the Flames in each of their five games.

            San Jose Sharks (5-0-0)

Certainly less of a surprise than the above two teams, but a blistering start nonetheless.

The Sharks look like the best team in hockey and feature a rookie phenom that took YouTube by storm with a highlight reel goal.

Tomas Hertl - another 19-year-old rookie - leads the team with seven goals and eight points and has seemingly injected life into the club. His goal against the New York Rangers was a thing of beauty and he tallied his seventh Saturday night versus the Ottawa Senators.

The Sharks lead the league with 24 goals scored and have allowed just seven.

Any $100 bettor would be up $367.54 if they had wagered the Sharks in each of their five games.

Argonauts at Tiger-Cats: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Pick, 56)

The Toronto Argonauts will look to stay hot on the road when they visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Guelph, Ont., on Monday to determine who wins the season series between the provincial rivals. The Tiger-Cats won in Toronto last week and trail the Argonauts by four points for the East Division lead. A Toronto victory coupled with a loss by Montreal on Monday against Winnipeg would clinch the division title and a first-round playoff bye for the Argonauts.

Toronto has won six straight road games to compensate for its 3-4 record at Rogers Centre that includes a 33-19 loss to the Tiger-Cats last week.. Hamilton quarterback Henry Burris leads the league with 4,173 passing yards, but will have to contend with Argonauts defensive back Patrick Watkins, who is tied for the league lead in interceptions with five. The Tiger-Cats limited Toronto running back Chad Kackert to 43 rushing yards last week and will need to do so again to contain the Argonauts' varied offense.

                    TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (9-5): Quarterback Ricky Ray is close to returning to regular action, but coach Scott Milanovich would not confirm whether Ray or Zach Collaros would start Monday. Collaros was limited to one rushing touchdown and 277 passing yards against Hamilton last week. Slotback Chad Owens returned to the lineup last week and caught six passes for 52 yards, and returned three punts for 19 yards.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (7-7): Wide receiver Luke Tasker, son of former NFL standout Steve Tasker, caught his first touchdown pass in his second CFL game last week. Running back C.J. Gable has emerged as a force in his first year in the league, with 665 rushing yards and 490 receiving yards for a combined 10 touchdowns. Former Toronto linebacker Brandon Isaac has four sacks and one interception since joining Hamilton.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                    * Argonauts are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
                    * Tiger-Cats are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games.
                    * Under is 8-2 in Tiger-Cats last 10 games in October.

                    EXTRA POINTS:

                    1. Burris is 27 rushing yards short of reaching 5,000 in his career.

                    2. Toronto allows a league-worst 294.5 passing yards per game, while Hamilton has allowed a league-worst 28 passing touchdowns.

                    3. The Tiger-Cats are 5-1 against divisional opponents.

Wild at Sabres: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at Buffalo Sabres (+127, 5)

The league-worst Buffalo Sabres welcome back a former captain when they host Jason Pominville and the Minnesota Wild on Monday. Pominville spent parts of his first nine seasons in the NHL with Buffalo, including two as the club's captain, before being traded to Minnesota in April. The 30-year-old, who has one tally in five games with the Wild this season, reached the 30-goal plateau twice with the Sabres - including 2006-07, when he scored a career-high 34 times.

"It'll be fun to go back, see the guys, play against guys you played with for a while," Pominville told NHL.com. The offensively challenged Sabres, who have yet to score three goals and have netted fewer than two in all but one game, still are in search of their first victory of the season. Minnesota is seeking its third straight win as it begins a four-game road trip.

                      TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN2

ABOUT THE WILD (2-1-2): Niklas Backstrom has resumed practicing with the team after suffering a strained knee last Tuesday. One sign that he could at least serve as Josh Harding's backup Monday is the fact Darcy Kuemper was assigned to Iowa of the American Hockey League after Saturday's victory over Dallas. Left wings Zach Parise and Matt Cooke have combined to score seven goals, one more than the entire Sabres team.

ABOUT THE SABRES (0-5-1): Buffalo hopes to avoid matching the longest season-opening winless streak in franchise history. The club began both the 1990-91 and 1999-2000 seasons without a victory over its first seven games. Ryan Miller is 0-4-0 despite posting a 2.29 goals-against average and .941 save percentage.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Road team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                      * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Buffalo.
                      * Sabres are 0-6 in their last six overall.
                      * Wild are 1-5 in their last six vs. Atlantic.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Wild RW Justin Fontaine and D Mathew Dumba became the fourth duo in franchise history to score their first NHL goals in the same game Saturday. The last twosome to accomplish the feat was D John Scott and LW Robbie Earl on Nov. 15, 2009.

                      2. Buffalo RW Patrick Kaleta will sit out his second game as he waits to have an in-person hearing with the league on Tuesday for his hit on Columbus D Jack Johnson. Kaleta is suspended pending the hearing.

                      3. The Sabres rank 28th on the power play, converting only two of their 21 opportunities (9.5 percent).
