    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- When Super Bowl odds for this year were originally posted, the Saints were 15-1; now they’re 9-2. Seattle was 10-1, now they’re 5-1.

    – On flip side, Giants were 20-1 to win it; now, they’re 1,000-1.

    – According to gambling guys on espn.com, the spread should change 10 points if Aaron Rodgers were to miss a game and be replaced by his backup, Seneca Wallace. That’s the biggest number of any NFL player.

    – Next in line on that list are four QB’s, at nine points each: Brady, Brees and both Manning brothers.

    – Steelers’ season over/under win total was 9; on October 12, they’re 0-4 and their chance of getting to 10 wins is 0.12%. Oy.

    – Since 2003, NFL underdogs getting 20% or less of the action are 94-70 (57.3%) against the spread.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random Saturday stuff......

    13) OK go get a map, or just go to Mapquest.

Find the Atlantic Ocean, then find the state of Indiana, then find the town of South Bend in Indiana. Put your finger on South Bend, then look at the Atlantic Ocean again, and then explain to me how the hell Notre Dame is playing basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Not football, just basketball, though they do have to play five football games a year vs ACC teams, but while they don’t have to share NBC’s football money with the rest of the league, they do share in the league’s basketball money. What a country.

    12) A minor league hockey team in Bakersfield is giving away a funeral plot for two as part of a promotion; you laugh, but its worth $5,000 and its something everyone will need at some point.

Why is there a hockey team in Bakersfield? They’re in the same league as a team in Las Vegas, so you tell me. I’ve seen the team in Vegas play; minor league hockey is always good stuff.

    11) Sam Cassell Jr committed to play basketball for UConn next year; he is playing at Chipola JC in Florida now, while his dad is an assistant for the Washington Wizards- he coached the Wiz’ team in the Las Vegas Summer League.

    10) Speaking of Las Vegas, UNLV hasn’t won four football games in a row since 1984, but they will if they beat Hawai’I tonight and they’re a 9.5-point favorite.

    9) I don’t see how any commissioner of any sport should be in the Hall of Fame for that sport, unless they were a founder, with one possible exception being Pete Rozelle, who brought the NFL into the television age and helped turned it into the money-making machine it is today.

Paul Tagliabue? No freakin’ way. Think Hall of Fames should be reserved for players/coaches/GMs, people who win/lose games.

    8) Someone told me this week that USA Today is $2 a copy now; do people really still buy newspapers? Why? I can see people buying the local paper because they’ve got coupons for shopping that help save money, but $2 a day for a national paper? I don’t get it.

    7) When you see NBA teams playing preseason games in the Phillipines, you realize their preseason is as much about marketing their product than it is about getting ready to play a season. Sending Jeremy Lin’s team over to Asia is making the Rockets/NBA a lot of money.

    6) Why can’t the NFL go to 14 playoff teams next year instead of 2015? Giving out only one bye per conference is going to change how December games are played in the league.

    5) When Giants lost 27-21 in Chicago Thursday, they avoided becoming the first NFL team ever to allow 30+ points in each of their first six games.

    4) Eli Manning has thrown eight 4th-quarter INTs this season; no one else has thrown more than three.

    3) Its amazing the amount of people I talk to who have no idea when Columbus Day is; I told someone I had Monday off from work and they’re like, “Why??” Um, the guy who discovered America? Remember him?

    2) Since 2003, NFL underdogs of 14+ points are 43-36-3 against spread. Since 1976, dogs of 20+ points are 7-1, with only loss when the expansion Buccaneers lost 42-0 at Pittsburgh when the Steelers were an NFL power.

    1) There is an ongoing struggle in sports management between old-school types who run things “by feel” and mostly younger people who like to use numbers/analytics to explain/analyze things.

At some point, you better have a little of both on your side, because while you need data to make good decisions, there definitely are intangible, immeasureable things that make a team win/lose.

Some Ivy League whiz kid will come up with a formula someday to define what a good teammate is, but its BS, because a lot of what that entails happens off the field, away from the analysts’ eye, in the locker room, on the team plane, in restaurants/hotels.

The value of human intuition and instinct will never disappear from running sports teams or any type of business, and that’s coming from a numbers guy.

NASCAR betting: Bank of America 500 preview

The Chase for the Championship marches into Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America 500 Saturday. Here’s a quick look at three drivers to watch when the Sprint Cup takes to the 1.5-mile quad oval track:

      Favorite

      Matt Kenseth (+400)

The current points leader is sliding back a bit after back-to-back wins in September. Kenseth followed a seventh-place showing at Dover with an 11th-place finish at Kansas last weekend. The No. 20 car has an average finish of 11.38 at Charlotte and placed 15th there in the Coca-Cola 600 back in May. Kenseth has been dominant on tri-oval tracks, with an average finish of 8.04 over the past three years.

      Live underdog

      Brad Keselowski (+1,800)

Keselowski may not be among the 13 Chase contenders but there’s no lack of motivation for the No. 2 Ford. He’s in a very vocal battle with Kyle Busch and would love nothing more than to stick it to his rival with a win at Charlotte Saturday. He’s among the best tri-oval drivers in NASCAR and boasts three wins on those intermediate tracks since 2011. With Keselowski outside of the Chase looking in, there is added value in his outright odds.

      Long shot

      Jamie McMurray (+10,000)

For a guy sitting first among non-Chase contenders, McMurray is sure getting some tasty odds this weekend. He’s been among the best drivers the past six races, posting an average finish of 11th – sixth best in all of the Sprint Cup. McMurray has two Top-5 finishes in his last five races, and while he hasn’t run well at Charlotte for his career, he did win one of the Sprint Cup Showdowns in Concord, NC back in May.

Key stat: Just 14 of the 109 races at Charlotte have been won by the pole sitter (12.8 percent). Jimmie Johnson is the last do it in 2004 and 2009.

Odds to win Bank of America 500:

      Matt Kenseth 4-1
      Kyle Busch 6-1
      Kasey Kahne 7-1
      Joey Logano 10-1
      Jeff Gordon 10-1
      A.J. Allmendinger 100-1
      Kevin Harvick 10-1
      Kurt Busch 15-1
      Carl Edwards 15-1
      Brad Keselowski 18-1
      Clint Bowyer 18-1
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 18-1
      Martin Truex Jr. 25-1
      Denny Hamlin 25-1
      Greg Biffle 30-1
      Ryan Newman 30-1
      Brian Vickers 35-1
      Jimmie Johnson 7-2
      Juan Montoya 60-1
      Jeff Burton 60-1
      Paul Menard 80-1
      Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 100-1
      Marcos Ambrose 100-1
      Mark Martin 100-1
      Danica Patrick 100-1
      Aric Almirola 100-1
      Jamie McMurray 100-1
      Field (Any Other Driver) 50-1

Tigers at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-138, 7.5)

The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have storied histories but will be facing each other for the first time in the postseason on Saturday when Game 1 of the American League Championship Series revs up at Fenway Park. Boston is looking to reach the World Series for the first time since 2007 while Detroit is seeking to return for the second consecutive year and third time in eight seasons. The Tigers won the season series 4-3.

The two teams were the highest-scoring squads in the majors – Boston recorded 853 runs, 57 more than Detroit – so the balance of potent bats and strong pitching arms will be intriguing. The health of Miguel Cabrera (groin) continues to be an issue but the Tigers' standout belted a two-run shot – his first homer since Sept. 18 – in the division series finale against Oakland and is 10-for-19 against Red Sox starter Jon Lester. Boston is certainly more rested after clinching its series against Tampa Bay on Tuesday while Detroit wrapped up its set versus Oakland on Thursday night and then traveled across the country.

          TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-50s and wind will blow in from right field at 10 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (15-8, 2.57 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (15-8, 3.75)

Sanchez led the AL in ERA and allowed only nine regular-season homers but was shaky in his ALDS start against Oakland. He gave up six runs (five earned) and eight hits – including three homers – in 4 1/3 innings. Sanchez's lone career outing against Boston was for the Marlins in 2006 when he yielded seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings in his second career start.

Lester went 3-0 in five September starts and the strong finish carried over to a victory against Tampa Bay in which he allowed two runs and three hits in 7 2/3 innings. He went 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA versus the Tigers this season – including a victory on Sept. 3 in which he allowed one run and struck out nine in seven innings – to improve to 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA in seven career outings. Lester gave up just one homer over his last 10 regular-season starts before permitting two solo shots in the start against the Rays.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.
          * Tigers are 15-36 in the last 51 meetings in Boston.
          * Tigers are 6-0 in their last six games vs. a left-handed starter.
          * Red Sox are 12-2 in Lesters last 14 home starts.

          WALK-OFFS:

          1. The final meeting of the regular-season series resulted in Boston posting a 20-4 victory over the Tigers on Sept. 4.

          2. Detroit CF Austin Jackson had a miserable ALDS against Oakland, going 2-for-20 with 13 strikeouts.

          3. Red Sox CF Jacoby Ellsbury went 9-for-18 with seven runs scored and four stolen bases in the ALDS while playing through a foot injury.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dodgers at Cardinals: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (+128)

The Los Angeles Dodgers have their pitching rotation lined up perfectly for the National League Championship Series and will be banking on ace Clayton Kershaw to come up big in Saturday's Game 2 against the host St. Louis Cardinals. Postseason sensation Carlos Beltran drove in all three runs, including an RBI single in the 13th inning, to lift the Cardinals in the series opener. Kershaw lost both starts against St. Louis this season, permitting six runs in 13 frames.

Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha can't match the credentials of Kershaw, but the 22-year-old is coming off perhaps the best back-to-back starts turned in by any pitcher in recent memory. Wacha has surrendered one hit in each of his last two outings and was dominant in a season-saving elimination game against Pittsburgh in the NL Division Series. Dodgers third baseman Juan Uribe has a five-game postseason hitting streak and six RBIs in his last three contests.

                  TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the high-70s. Wind will blow out to right field at 7 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (16-9, 1.83 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (4-1, 2.78)

Kershaw was dominant in his first NLCS start, striking out 12 and giving up one run on three hits in seven innings against Atlanta. He came back on three days' rest despite throwing 124 pitches and allowed only two hits on three runs over six frames. Kershaw led the NL with 232 strikeouts, a sparking 1.83 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP, but he is 4-5 with a 3.75 ERA in 12 career starts against the Cardinals.

Wacha carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in Game 4 in Pittsburgh, only to see it broken up by Pedro Alvarez's solo home run. It was the only hit allowed by Wacha, who tied his season high with his second straight nine-strikeout performance. He did not allow a run in three of five September starts, including a no-hit bid against Washington that was thwarted by an infield single with two out in the ninth.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 6-1-1 in Kershaw's last eight starts vs. Cardinals.
                  * Dodgers are 1-4 in Kershaw's last five road starts vs. Cardinals.
                  * Cardinals are 8-1 in their last nine games following a win.
                  * Over is 8-1 in Cardinals last nine playoff games as an underdog.

                  WALK-OFFS:

                  1. Beltran has nine RBIs this postseason and 34 in 40 career playoff games.

                  2. Dodgers CF Andre Ethier returned to the lineup in Game 1, his first start since injuring his left ankle on Sept. 13.

                  3. Cardinals SS Pete Kozma is 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs against Kershaw.
