    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six of the more intriguing games on this week’s college football schedule:

-- Oklahoma vs Texas (@ Dallas)—Mack Brown’s last stand with the Longhorns?

    – Missouri @ Georgia—How much do Dawgs have left in tank after consecutive barnburners wins?

-- Florida @ LSU—Still think Zach Mettenberger is a good longshot to win Heisman.

-- Oregon @ Washington—Where do schools get the money to re-do their helmets/uniforms all the time?

-- South Carolina @ Arkansas—Jadeveon Clowney has taken spotlight away from Johnny Manziel; will he play here?

-- Michigan @ Penn State—Not lot of faith in Wolverines after winning close games with Akron, UConn.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

    13) Michael Wacha’s last two starts are amazingly good: two hits, one run (the Alvarez HR Monday) in 16 IP.

In those two games, batters are 2-48 against him. Wow.

    12) Of the four pro sports teams in Philly, none of the four coaches who were in their job on January 1 are still employed by that team- tough year. Chip Kelly is now the dean of active head coaches in Philly- he was coaching Oregon this time last year.

    11) LaSalle basketball coach John Giannini thinks the transfer rate in college basketball might be as high as 50% every year if there were no rules regarding players sitting out after a transfer. In other words, chaos.

    10) Falcons-Raiders-Jaguars will be “home” teams for the NFL’s three games in London in 2014. There are rumors that because of security concerns at recent 49er-Raider fans with fans of both teams clashing, that game might be the one that gets moved to England next year.

    9) With four baseball playoff games and an NFL game at night, was this past Monday the best sports Monday of the whole year?

    8) Nice to know federal workers are getting paid; but they’re getting paid to do nothing. Our government’s leaders are screw-ups and that’s being nice.

    7) Joe Girardi signed up for another four years in the Bronx, at $4M a pop. Where does this leave the Cubs in their search for a manager?

    6) Speaking of blame, Rex Ryan needs to learn basic strategy; up 20-14 with 13:30 left Monday, Jets scored a TD to go up 26-14. At that, you really have to go for two points, since a 12-point lead is basically the same as a 13-point lead, but a 14-point lead is WAY better. But no, Jets kicked the PAT, Atlanta scored two TDs to take a 28-27 lead and only Geno Smith’s last-minute heroics saved Rex from a very long week in the Big Apple.

    5) Scary thing is that Ryan said Tuesday that he didn't realize he should have gone for two until after the Falcons went ahead. Say what?? Why do the Jets have assistant coaches if they're not assisting Ryan?

    4) In case you wonder about such things, Mike Glennon’s two backups with the Buccaneers are Dan Orlovsky and Jordan Rodgers, not exactly rating as high as Frank Reich or Don Strock as high-quality backup QBs.

    3) Logical landing spot for Matt Flynn is back in Green Bay, where he knows the offense and they need a better backup to Aaron Rodgers.

    2) USC plays its first game under interim coach Ed Orgeron tonight; my question is this: who is running their offense? Lane Kiffin did all that; and with such inexperienced QBs, you need a strong coach to help them thru games. Orgeron reached out to former Cal coach Jeff Tedford, but Tedford turned him down.

Guy named Clay Helton is the OC; his dad used to coach the Houston Cougars; before coming to USC, Helton had only coached at Duke and in Conference USA-- not very USC-like.

    1) Speaking of Kiffin, where does he go from here? He’s still young but has had three prime coaching jobs; Tennessee/USC and the Raiders. No one else is hiring him, not for a while. I’d be curious to hear him on TV, to hear if he offered any insight. He already has enough money to sit home and do nothing if he wants, so we’ll see what happens.

Tigers at Athletics: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (+109, 7)

The Detroit Tigers finally found their offensive form in Game 4 and used it to force a decisive Game 5 in the American League Division Series. The Tigers will head back on the road, where they managed a total of three runs in the first two games, and visit the Oakland Athletics for Game 5 on Thursday. Detroit still is not getting much from Miguel Cabrera but the supporting cast, led by Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta, is stepping up.

The Tigers had scored in only two innings in the first three games to fall behind 2-1 in the best-of-five series but overcame a pair of deficits in Tuesday’s 8-6 triumph. The Athletics finally showed some vulnerability in the bullpen, which had three relievers combine to allow five runs in the final two innings of Game 4. Detroit won a Game 5 in Oakland in last season’s ALDS behind a four-hit shutout from Justin Verlander, who is expected to get the nod on Thursday.

        TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s with clear skies and winds blowing WSW at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Bartolo Colon (0-1, 4.50)

Verlander struck out 11 and allowed four hits in Saturday’s Game 2 but did not factor in the decision when Oakland ended up claiming a 1-0 victory. The former Cy Young Award winner has now made three ALDS starts against the Athletics in the last two seasons and yielded a total of one run and 11 hits while striking out 33 in 23 innings. Verlander threw at least 117 pitches in each one of those starts.

Colon allowed three runs in the first inning of Game 1 but shut the Tigers down for the next five. The burly veteran still absorbed the loss while scattering 10 hits. Colon had not surrendered more than two earned runs in any of his last six regular-season starts, including a five-inning stint at Detroit on Aug. 29.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
        * Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Oakland.
        * Tigers are 6-2 in Verlanders last eight starts vs. Athletics.
        * Under is 10-4 in Verlanders last 14 starts vs. Athletics.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Cabrera is 4-for-16 with four singles and one RBI in the ALDS while fighting through abdominal and groin injuries.

        2. Oakland CF Coco Crisp is 7-for-9 with four runs scored in the last two games.

        3. Detroit RHP Max Scherzer came out of the bullpen in Game 4 and earned the win in relief. He should be available again in Game 5.
