    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some college football trends for this week's games.........

-- Stanford covered twice in its last eight games as a home favorite.

-- Home side covered four of last five Ole Miss-Auburn games.

-- Texas Tech covered its last five games as a road favorite.

-- NC State failed to cover last 12 games as a road favorite.

-- Visitor covered last five New Mexico State-New Mexico games.

-- LSU is 17-4 vs spread in its last 21 games with Mississippi State.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Notes on the first Saturday in October

    13) Dan Uggla makes $13M a year but isn’t on the Braves’ roster for the NLDS. Guess the laser surgery he had in August didn’t fix whatever his hitting problems are.

    12) Browns' QB Brian Hoyer tore his ACL Thursday night, which puts #3 QB Jason Campbell in line to back up previously-deposed starter Brandon Weeden- they're apparently not interested in adding Josh Freeman..

    11) 49ers’ WR Anquan Boldin has 24 catches for 372 yards and two TDs; the Niners’ other five WRs combined for 13 catches, 112 yards, zero TDs.

    10) In their last 260 games, the Dallas Cowboys are 130-130.

    9) Guess Louisville’s basketball team didn’t practice too much this week, since Rick Pitino was all over TV, shilling for his new book, the sixth book he’s written. I’ve read a couple of his other ones— they were better than you think they'd be.

    8) City of Houston already has nine kids from Class of ’14 committed to play D-I basketball next year. Thing is, all nine are playing out-of-state, which seems odd considering there lot of D-I teams in Texas.

    7) 6-6 forward Trevon Bluiett, a 4-star recruit from Indiana, de-committed from UCLA, which hurts Steve Alford’s program; Butler/Xavier/Purdue are said to be the new frontrunners for his services. Guess the kid doesn’t like warm weather.

    6) There is a suite at the Palms with two bowling alleys in it and another one with a half court basketball court. Either one would be tremendous.

    5) Scapegoats, part 1: Texas Rangers fired their 74-year old bench coach and their first base coach after losing the play-in game to Tampa Bay. Yup, must’ve been their fault.

    4) Mets' All-Star pitcher Matt Harvey will have Tommy John surgery and miss the entire 2014 season.

    3) I’m not a big Jim Boeheim fan, but he’s done great, great things for Syracuse and he makes $2M a year, which he more than earns, considering how much $$$ their basketball program makes; wonder how his proclamation that paying college athletes would be “idiotic” will play with recruits.

If you read his whole statement, he makes perfect sense, but how many kids will look at it that way?

    2) I’m a big Dusty Baker fan, since he was nice to me when I met him back when I was 15 years old and he had a broken wrist while playing for the Braves. Sad to see him get fired by Cincinnati; I’m thinking if the Dodgers don’t win the World Series, they’ll give Don Mattingly the boot and Magic Johnson will hire Dusty as manager. The guy is 167 games over .500 in 20 years as a manager, after all. He even got the Cubs to the playoffs.

    1) I was having a bad day at work the other day so I took a walk downstairs to get some food; there was guy sitting in the lobby, wearing shorts. I’m wondering why the guy was wearing shorts, when I realized his left leg is artificial. One of those metal prosthetic legs you see guys run races with sometimes. End of complaining for me this week; that guy was out and about with an artificial leg and he was smiling. No reason I couldn’t be, too.

      Week 15

Montreal (5-8) @ Edmonton (3-10)—Eskimos were outscored 33-7 in second half by Toronto last week, blowing 15-1 lead and chance for third win in row; Alouettes (-4) beat Edmonton 32-27 in Week 5 for their 7th straight series win (six of seven by 10+ points). Als won last three visits here, by 10-13-13 points, as dogs covered four of last five in series played here. Over is 3-0-1 in last four series games. Montreal snapped 3-game skid last week by upsetting Riders 17-12; they’re 2-4 on road, winning by 5 at Winnipeg, 11 at Toronto. Not often you see a 5-8 team with a +12 turnover margin. Eskimos are 2-9 in last 11 games, with both wins over cellar-dwelling Winnipeg; Edmonton is 1-6 at home, 1-4 as home dogs, losing at home by 21-14-1-3-10-12 points. Eight of their last ten games went over the total.

Winnipeg (2-11) @ Calgary (10-3)—Dreadful Bombers lost 10 of last 11 games, covered one of last seven; they lost last three road games by 23-23-18 points, after covering first three on foreign soil. Winnipeg is -9 in turnovers their last three games, but they did upset Riders four weeks ago, so Calgary better not be asleep here. Stampeders (-5.5) won 37-24 in Manitoba in Week 5, outgaining Bombers 490-284 in game that was just 17-14 at half; Stamps won last eight series games, covering last three. Six of last nine series games went over total. Calgary won five of last six games; they got upset by Argos in last home game after winning first five. Stamps are 0-3 vs spread in last three home games, with home wins this year by 12-11-15-3-4 points. Five of last seven Stampeder games stayed under the total.

CFL Saturday: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Edmonton Eskimos (-3, 50.5)

The Montreal Alouettes may be struggling to replace key injuries on offense, but their defense is keeping them competitive. Montreal will hope for another strong defensive showing when it visits the struggling Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday. Alouettes linebacker Chip Cox ended last week’s 17-12 road victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders with an interception - one of three by Montreal, which looks fearsome at the linebacker position after welcoming Kyries “Angry Bird” Hebert back from injury.

Edmonton experienced the highs and lows of a big comeback after being on both sides of one over the past two weeks. The Eskimos stormed back from a 20-point deficit on the road against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, only to squander their own 21-point lead at home against the Toronto Argonauts last week. The biggest concern in Edmonton’s loss to the Argonauts was the health of starting quarterback Mike Reilly, who left in the first quarter with what was deemed a concussion and is uncertain to start going forward.

      TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (5-8): Quarterback Josh Neiswander appears to be the de facto starter for Montreal with Anthony Calvillo and Tanner Marsh sidelined. However, Neiswander’s mediocre play (74-for-128 passing with five touchdowns and five interceptions) has left the door open for former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, who completed his first pass with the Alouettes for 54 yards last week. Defensive end John Bowman leads the team with eight sacks, and the return of Hebert - who has seven sacks - could create some healthy competition for Montreal’s pass rush.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (3-10): Veteran pivot Kerry Joseph replaced Reilly last week and completed 13-of-26 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions. Losing Reilly could neutralize Edmonton’s best offensive weapon in slotback Fred Stamps, who leads the league with 1,038 receiving yards. Reilly also leads the team in rushing with 539 yards. On defense, nine sacks by defensive end Marcus Howard lead the team, while defensive back Chris Thompson has caught a team-leading three interceptions and recovered one fumble for 63 yards.

      TRENDS:

      * Alouettes are 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
      * Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Edmonton.
      * Alouettes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.
      * Over is 19-7-2 in Eskimos last 28 games overall.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Cox leads the league with 91 tackles and has six sacks and three interceptions.

      2. The CFL fined Toronto DL Cleyon Laing an undisclosed amount for the hit that knocked Reilly out of last week’s contest.

      3. Edmonton trails Montreal by four points for the final playoff spot.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-16, 54)

The Calgary Stampeders have the best record in the CFL after battling through injuries to go 4-1 in September. Calgary will try to keep its momentum going when it hosts the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday. Veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn started the last game for the Stampeders and threw three touchdowns in a dominating 35-11 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, while quarterback Drew Tate recorded a rushing touchdown as he continues to rehabilitate from an elbow injury.

A deflated Winnipeg team was manhandled 53-17 at home by the BC Lions last week after the Blue Bombers blew a 20-point lead at home against the Edmonton Eskimos a week prior. A road trip might seem like just the right thing for Winnipeg, but its road record is 1-5 - almost as bad as its 1-6 showing at home. Quarterback Max Hall started the last game for the Blue Bombers, who have alternated between Hall and Justin Goltz as they search for a solution to their league-worst offense, which has produced 268 points.

      TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2-11): Hall will start Saturday, but will need a strong performance to avoid being replaced by Goltz. Defensive end Alex Hall leads the league with 15 sacks after posting nine in his first CFL season. The league record for sacks in a season is 26.5, meaning Hall will need another 12 in his final five games to break it. Linebacker Henoc Muamba leads the team with 76 tackles.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (10-3): Kicker Rene Paredes and running back Jon Cornish were named players of the month for September. Paredes earned special teams honours after making 12-of-13 field goals from Weeks 11-14, while Cornish was named top Canadian player after rushing for 398 yards in that span. Slotback Jabari Arthur has filled in admirably for the injured Nik Lewis, with four catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns last week against Hamilton.

      TRENDS:

      * Blue Bombers are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings in Calgary.
      * Over is 9-1 in Stampeders last 10 home games.
      * Blue Bombers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall.
      * Stampeders are 5-12-2 ATS in their last 19 games following a ATS win.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Calgary is 5-1 at home while Winnipeg is 1-6 against West Division opponents.

      2. Winnipeg worst recent seasons were a 4-14 campaign in 2010 and a 3-15 mark in 1998.

      3. The Stampeders defeated the Blue Bombers 37-24 in Winnipeg in Week 5.

Rays at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (+108, 7.5)

        Red Sox lead series 1-0.

The biggest worry for the Boston Red Sox prior to Game 1 of the American League Division Series was rust after taking four days off between games. That turned out to not be much of a concern in a 12-2 victory, and the Red Sox will look to take a commanding lead in the best-of-five series when they host Game 2 on Saturday. Tampa Bay finished second in the majors in fielding percentage but looked uncomfortable on defense in Game 1.

Rays left fielder Sean Rodriguez had trouble judging balls off the “Green Monster” and rookie Wil Myers let a fly ball drop on the warning track in deep right-center in Game 1, leading to big innings for the Red Sox. With right-hander John Lackey scheduled to start for Boston on Saturday, Tampa Bay will likely give Rodriguez the start off in Game 2. Every Red Sox starter recorded at least one hit in Game 1, and seven different players had at least one RBI.

        TV: 5:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-60s with partly cloudy skies. Wind will blow in from CF at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH David Price (10-8, 3.33 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH John Lackey (10-13, 3.52)

Price pitched Tampa Bay into the playoffs by holding the Texas Rangers to two runs on seven hits in a complete game on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs in each of his last five starts, including over eight innings against the Red Sox on Sept. 10. Price is 1-3 with a 3.96 ERA in his postseason career but came out of the bullpen against Boston in the 2008 ALCS, including closing out a Game 7 win.

Lackey last pitched at Colorado on Sept. 24 and struggled to a 4.98 ERA in five starts over the final month of the regular season. The veteran faced Tampa Bay twice in 2013 and was knocked around for nine runs on 19 hits in 10 total innings. Lackey is making his first postseason appearance since 2009, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels, and is 3-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 14 career playoff games - 12 starts.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 5-0 in Price's last five road starts vs. Red Sox.
        * Under is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings in Boston.
        * Red Sox are 4-1 in their last five games with umpire Eric Cooper behind home plate.
        * Under is 6-2 in Lackeys last eight starts vs. American League East.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Red Sox backup C David Ross is 2-for-5 with two home runs in his career against Price and is expected to catch Lackey on Saturday.

        2. Myers is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in the last three games.

        3. Boston has recorded 41 straight stolen bases without being caught.

Lightning at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Chicago Blackhawks (-209, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks hung a second Stanley Cup banner in four years Tuesday and took up where they left off by rallying to win their opener. The Blackhawks look to build off that when the young Tampa Bay Lightning make their only visit on Saturday night. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa scored goals in the 6-4 victory over Washington to start the season and the Lightning gave up a pair of shorthanded tallies to drop a 3-1 decision at Boston on Thursday.

Tampa Bay, who struggled with the man advantage at key times a season ago, was 0-for-5 on the power play in its opener without injured point man Sami Salo. Chicago killed only three of six penalties against Washington, but snuffed out a 5-on-3 late in the contest to hold the lead. The Lightning hosts Blackhawks on Oct. 24 in addition to difficult games with Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Boston this month.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, SunSports (Tampa Bay), CSN Chicago

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (0-1-0): Tampa Bay hopes for the return of Salo, who missed Friday’s practice with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day. Mark Barberio took Salo’s place on defense, giving the Lightning eight players at 23 or younger in the lineup opening night – four on the blue line. The Lightning’s top forward unit of Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone were kept off the scoresheet against Boston and combined for seven shots while sustaining minimal pressure.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (1-0-0): It will be virtually impossible for Chicago to match its 24-game unbeaten streak that opened last season, but they aren’t showing signs of a Stanley Cup hangover. “The guys have always been in a good place since day one of the season,” coach Joel Quenneville said after the first game. “You’ve got to commend them on how they prepared themselves.” The Blackhawks received at least a point from five of its six defensemen in the opener while blue liners Johhny Oduya and Niklas Hjalmarsson recorded plus-4 ratings.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Home team is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                    * Lightning are 2-7 in the last nine meetings in Chicago.
                    * Lightning are 19-50 in their last 69 road games.
                    * Over is 4-0 in Lightning last four Saturday games.

                    EXTRA POINTS:

                    1. Lightning C Valtteri Filppula, a former Detroit Red Wing, will play his 40th career game against Chicago – tied for second most behind St. Louis (41).

                    2. Chicago RW Ben Smith, a healthy scratch in the first game, is expected to replace rookie RW Jimmy Hayes in the lineup.

                    3. Tampa Bay won the last three games against Chicago, but one was in overtime and another in a shootout.

                            Good morning, Kaptain!

Our sources get a little slow once all these sports are playing at the same time but they should smooth it out soon.

Good luck today! I'm really looking forward to your card. Brigham Young was a rude surprise last night and I can't wait to see your bounce-back teaser action!
