    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some NFL trends with Week 3 upon us........

-- New Orleans is 3-8-1 in last 12 games as a road underdog.

-- New England covered seven of last eight as a road underdog.

-- Packers covered nine of last ten post-bye games.

    -- Arizona is 13-4 as a non-divisional home underdog.

-- Raiders are 1-5 in last six divisional home games.

-- Texans are 1-5 in last six non-divisional road games.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend……

    13) A’s-Tigers; no other baseball matters at Armadillo World HQ. A’s had Detroit by the tail in playoffs LY but let them slip away. Hopefully this year will be different, but the Tigers are a formidable opponent.

    12) Winner of Chief-Titan game will be NFL’s early Cinderella story. KC is running ball more than the Eagles did under Reid, thanks to Jamaal Charles.

    11) How good is Northwestern? Ohio State visits Evanston Saturday night; will Northwestern alum Brent Musberger and former Buckeye QB Kirk Herbstreit scuffle in the broadcast booth?

    10) Unbeaten Seahawks have been unsteady winners on the road; they visit the 3-1 Colts, who whacked the 49ers in Candlestick two weeks ago. Super Bowl preview?

    9) Vandy-Mizzou is the James Franklin Bowl; Mizzou’s QB and Vandy’s coach are both named James Franklin. Don’t know much about Missouri yet; we’ll know more after this game.

    8) Bears have forced 3+ turnovers in all four games; they’re scoring lot of points under offensive guru Trestman. Short week and travel off Monday night game for Saints, who struggled in outdoor game so far this season.

    7) Maryland is improved, but by how much? They’re 15-point dogs at Florida State, which slept thru first 20:00 at BC last week ,before pulling away for a methodical win. This is a good yardstick for the Terps.

    6) Terrelle Pryor is back at QB for Oakland in this 11:30 Sunday night game; if this game gets good TV ratings, could we see Sunday night doubleheaders in the next TV contract?

    5) Arizona State-Notre Dame are playing at Jerry World in Dallas, for some reason. ASU’s schedule must’ve been made by Evel Knievel, or somebody who despises Todd Graham. Wisconsin-Stanford-USC-ND on consecutive Saturdays. Not easy.

    4) Matt Schaub has thrown a pick-6 in three consecutive games, throwing the Texans and my fantasy team into the ashcan; now he goes to San Francisco to face a 49er team that had three extra days to rest/prepare after waxing the Rams in St Louis last Thursday.

    3) Washington Huskies are a well-coached veteran team, but so is Stanford. This should be a really good game. Cardinal crushed Wazzu in Seattle last week and no one else had done that so far this season.

    2) Broncos’ juggernaut visits Jerry World on Sunday; problem for Dallas is that their defense is the same one Peyton Manning practiced against for seven years with the Colts. Game is on turf though and Cowboys have scored 67 points in two home games, so this could be a fun 4:25 game Sunday.

    1) Yeah, there are three other playoff series besides the most important one; TV network execs will be rooting against Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and the A’s. Yup, three of the five lowest payrolls made it to the playoffs this year. So did three of the five highest payrolls. Go figure.

      CFL
      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 15

Hamilton (6-7) @ Toronto (9-4)—Surging Argonauts won/covered all four games on road swing, scoring 33.8 ppg, after losing last two at home; they beat TiCats 39-34 (-3.5) in season opener, holding Hamilton to FG in second half after trailing 31-24 at half. Toronto is 3-3 at home, 2-4 as home favorite, winning here by 5-26-3 points. Argos won last four series games, scoring 40 ppg with all four games going over total. Underdogs are 11-8 SU in last 19 series games, 13-6 vs spread. TiCats lost last four visits here, by 17-14-3-5 points. Hamilton is 5-3 in last eight games (6-2 vs spread) after a 1-4 start; they covered their last four road games, with four of their six road tilts decided by 5 or less points. Three of last four Hamilton road games went over the total.

Saskatchewan (8-5) @ British Columbia (9-4)—Sliding Roughriders lost last four games, with two home losses and one at dreadful Winnipeg, but can still tie for second in West here; they lost 24-22 (-6) at home to Lions two weeks ago, despite outgaining BC by 74 yards- they were -2 in turnovers. Riders led at halftime in three of their last four losses; they’ve lost last four visits here, by 6-13-19-11 points. Last eight series games stayed under total, with home side winning 12 of last 16. Lions are +7 in turnovers the last two weeks, after being -16 up to that point; they’ve won/covered last three games behind backup QB Demarco (played at ODU), scoring 37.7 ppg. BC is 6-0 at home, 4-2 as home favorite, winning home tilts by 8-10-7-4-3-22 points.

Montreal (5-8) @ Edmonton (3-10)—Eskimos were outscored 33-7 in second half by Toronto last week, blowing 15-1 lead and chance for third win in row; Alouettes (-4) beat Edmonton 32-27 in Week 5 for their 7th straight series win (six of seven by 10+ points). Als won last three visits here, by 10-13-13 points, as dogs covered four of last five in series played here. Over is 3-0-1 in last four series games. Montreal snapped 3-game skid last week by upsetting Riders 17-12; they’re 2-4 on road, winning by 5 at Winnipeg, 11 at Toronto. Not often you see a 5-8 team with a +12 turnover margin. Eskimos are 2-9 in last 11 games, with both wins over cellar-dwelling Winnipeg; Edmonton is 1-6 at home, 1-4 as home dogs, losing at home by 21-14-1-3-10-12 points. Eight of their last ten games went over the total.

Winnipeg (2-11) @ Calgary (10-3)—Dreadful Bombers lost 10 of last 11 games, covered one of last seven; they lost last three road games by 23-23-18 points, after covering first three on foreign soil. Winnipeg is -9 in turnovers their last three games, but they did upset Riders four weeks ago, so Calgary better not be asleep here. Stampeders (-5.5) won 37-24 in Manitoba in Week 5, outgaining Bombers 490-284 in game that was just 17-14 at half; Stamps won last eight series games, covering last three. Six of last nine series games went over total. Calgary won five of last six games; they got upset by Argos in last home game after winning first five. Stamps are 0-3 vs spread in last three home games, with home wins this year by 12-11-15-3-4 points. Five of last seven Stampeder games stayed under the total.

CFL Friday: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonuats (-4, 56)

The Toronto Argonauts return from their four-game road trip to host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday as part of back-to-back games between the East Division rivals. Toronto clinched a playoff spot with its sixth straight road victory last week and hopes to translate some of that away success to Rogers Centre, where it is 3-3. Argonauts running back Chad Kackert was named offensive player of the week after recording 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his return from injury against Edmonton.

The Tiger-Cats were dismantled at home by the Calgary Stampeders last week as starting quarterback Henry Burris threw three interceptions and backup Dan LeFevour tossed two. Without an effective passing game, Hamilton was held to its lowest point total since being shut out by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 4. The Tiger-Cats trail the Argonauts by six points for the East Division lead, meaning the next two games will go a long way toward determining who earns a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

      TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (6-7): Burris leads the league with 3,899 passing yards, while running back C.J. Gable has 569 rushing yards as part of 1,047 from scrimmage. Wide receiver Andy Fantuz has 678 receiving yards in an injury-shortened season, but on pace for his second career 1,000-yard campaign. "I think I'll continue getting better,” Fantuz told the Hamilton Spectator. “I feel like a lot of subtle parts of my game have already got a lot better and have been fine-tuned this year." Hamilton added another speedy wide receiver in Brandon Banks, who spent three seasons with the NFL’s Washington football team.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (9-4): Kick returner Trent Guy was named special teams player of the week after returning four kicks for 131 yards, including a 65-yard return in the first quarter. Slotback Chad Owens and quarterback Ricky Ray remain out with injuries, but quarterback Zach Collaros is gaining confidence with every game, leading a 21-point rally against Edmonton in the second half last week. "It just goes to show the kind of character we have on this team," coach Scott Milanovich said. "Nobody here believes a game is over until there are zeros on the clock.''

      TRENDS:

      * Tiger-Cats are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.
      * Argonauts are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
      * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
      * Tiger-Cats are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 meetings in Toronto.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Toronto DB Pat Watkins leads the league with five interceptions.

      2. The Argonauts have allowed a league-high 296.1 passing yards per game, while the Tiger-Cats have allowed a league-high 28 passing touchdowns.

      3. The Argonauts defeated Hamilton 39-34 at home to open the season.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions (-3, 52.5)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are in a tailspin after their franchise-record start to the season, dropping four straight games and sitting third in the West Division. The Roughriders will have a chance to make up some ground on a team that passed them when they visit the BC Lions on Friday. Saskatchewan’s offense has looked lost without league-leading running back Kory Sheets, who was on pace to break the CFL record for rushing yardage in a season before suffering a knee injury three weeks ago.

The Lions defeated the Roughriders 24-22 in Week 13 as part of a perfect two-game road swing to bring a three-game winning streak back to BC Place, where they are 6-0 in 2013 and have not lost in 12 regular season games. BC scored three defensive touchdowns in last week’s victory against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, which took the pressure off backup quarterback Thomas DeMarco. DeMarco completed 15-of-21 passes with one touchdown starting in place of Travis Lulay, who will miss at least two more weeks with a shoulder injury.

      TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (8-5): Saskatchewan has been held to 34 points in two full games without Sheets. Quarterback Darian Durant completed 59-of-98 passes for 665 yards over that span, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions, but the Roughriders running game was non-existent, totaling 54 yards. The defense is hurting as well without linebacker Renauld Williams, who led the team in tackles and sacks before being placed on the nine-game injured list. Slotback Chris Getzlaf is on pace for a career year with 861 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

ABOUT THE LIONS (9-4): Linebacker Adam Bighill was named defensive player of the week after recording 10 tackles, one sack and forcing two fumbles against the Blue Bombers. Bighill returned one of those fumbles for a touchdown. Cornerbacks Dante Marsh and Cord Parks also scored touchdowns off turnovers. Lulay expressed confidence in DeMarco’s abilities Monday and said he hopes to resume throwing soon. "The swelling and inflammation stuff needs to go down and that's kind of where we're at,'' Lulay said. "We're getting to the tail end of that where I'm getting my range of motion back. Now it's a buildup to the strengthening and the throwing again.''

      TRENDS:

      * Roughriders are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.
      * Lions are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs. West.
      * Under is 17-5 in the last 22 meetings in BC.
      * Roughriders are 2-7 ATS in their last nine meetings.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Saskatchewan signed DB Rod Williams to shore up its secondary after Williams failed to make the roster of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. Williams played three seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos.

      2. BC has 17 interceptions and allows a league-low 247.7 passing yards per game.

      3. Saskatchewan SB Geroy Simon broke the CFL record for all-time receptions last week with five catches to bring his career total to 1,020.

Friday's MLB NLDS action: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals (-135, 7)

        Cardinals lead series 1-0.

Reggie Jackson may be the original "Mr. October," but Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals is making a strong argument that he deserves the title in the 21st century. Beltran continued his postseason heroics with a three-run homer to spark St. Louis to a 9-1 rout of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Thursday. The Cardinals will look to take a 2-0 lead in Friday's Game 2 of the best-of-five series.

Beltran's blast was his 15th in 35 postseason games, tying Babe Ruth for eighth place on the all-time list. "He's like our secret weapon when it comes to the postseason. He steps up every time," Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter said of Beltran. Pittsburgh managed only four hits - two by Andrew McCutchen - and got its only run on a homer by Pedro Alvarez, continuing a trend that has seen the Pirates outscored 35-11 in their last four games in St. Louis.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network

WEATHER: Temperatures in mid 80s with partly cloudy skies and a 17 percent chance of rain. Winds blowing south at 12 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (10-7, 3.22 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (15-10, 3.97)

Cole showed why he was the top overall pick in the 2011 draft, winning his last four starts and allowing six runs in five September outings. The 23-year-old fireballer has never faced St. Louis, but he was 4-2 with a 2.38 ERA in seven starts away from home. Cole has not pitched since Sept. 24, when he limited the Chicago Cubs to two runs over six innings.

Lynn also had a strong finish to the season, winning his last two starts and allowing one run and eight hits over 12 1/3 innings. He also faced the Cubs in his last turn, blanking them on four hits over six innings, and permitted a total of four runs (three earned) in his last four starts. Lynn made five starts against Pittsburgh this season, going 2-1 with a 5.60 ERA.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
        * Cardinals are 4-1 in Lynns last five home starts vs. Pirates.
        * Over is 32-15-4 in the last 51 meetings in St. Louis.
        * Pirates are 0-5 in the last five meetings in St. Louis.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Lynn has held McCutchen to four hits in 26 at-bats with 10 strikeouts.

        2. Cole struck out 39 and allowed only 24 hits in 32 innings in September.

        3. Beltran trails only Derek Jeter (20) and Albert Pujols (18) for the most postseason homers among active players.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (-104, 6.5)

        Dodgers lead series 1-0.

The Atlanta Braves struck out 15 times in a series-opening loss and now have to deal with Los Angeles right-hander Zack Greinke when they host the Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Friday. Atlanta hitters fanned 12 times in seven innings against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener and must fare better against Greinke to avoid heading to Los Angeles in an 0-2 hole. The Braves have lost four consecutive home postseason games.

The Dodgers had 11 hits in Thursday’s 6-1 victory, including a two-run homer by Adrian Gonzalez - the first postseason blast of his career. A.J. Ellis doubled twice and hopes to continue his surge as he is 4-for-10 with a homer against Game 2 starter Mike Minor. Atlanta had just five hits in the opener, with the high-priced B.J. Upton (.184 average) starting the game on the bench and the well-paid Dan Uggla (.179) left off the playoff roster.

        TV: 6:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 80s with partly cloudy skies and winds SE at 3 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (15-4, 2.63 ERA) vs. Braves LH Mike Minor (15-12, 3.11)

Greinke was just 1-1 over his last five starts despite allowing just six runs. He blanked Atlanta on four hits over seven innings on June 6 and is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three career outings against the Braves. Greinke is 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 career postseason appearances (12 starts).

Minor is making his first career playoff start. He is 1-1 with a 2.32 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers, including a 1-0 mark and 2.25 ERA in two outings this season. Minor went 0-4 with a 3.94 ERA in five September starts.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 4-1 in Minors last five starts vs. Dodgers.
        * Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
        * Under is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings in Atlanta.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. The Braves were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the opener, with 3B Chris Johnson delivering a run-scoring single.

        2. Dodgers OF Andre Ethier (ankle) was included on the postseason roster and grounded out as a pinch hitter in the opener.

        3. Atlanta RF Justin Upton is 5-for-11 with a homer against Greinke.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's MLB ALDS action: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-135, 6.5)

The Tampa Bay Rays have been in playoff mode for the last few weeks while battling for the wild card, winning a one-game tiebreaker in Texas on Monday and taking the one-game wild card playoff in Cleveland on Wednesday. Their reward is a trip to face the well-rested and top-seeded Boston Red Sox on Friday in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. The Red Sox will be playing for the first time since ending the regular season on Sunday.

Boston played an intersquad game on Wednesday to keep everybody fresh but will need to get into playoff mode quickly after spending the bulk of September comfortably ahead of the rest of the AL East. The Red Sox took 12 of the 19 meetings against Tampa Bay during the regular season, including two of three on the road from Sept. 10-12 to help put the division out of reach. The Rays won 10 of their last 12 going back to the regular season, with the pitching holding opponents to 2.83 runs in that span.

        TV: 3:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (17-4, 3.29 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (15-8, 3.75)

Moore finished out the regular season with wins in each of his last two starts but struggled with his command in September, issuing 20 walks in 29 total innings over six starts. The 24-year-old had one of his best starts at Boston on July 22, allowing just two hits and walking one in a shutout. Moore is making his third career postseason appearance - second start - and yielded a total of one run on three hits in 10 innings during the 2011 ALDS.

Lester had a string of nine straight quality starts come to an end at Baltimore last Saturday, when he was reached for four runs on nine hits in five innings. The 29-year-old faced Tampa Bay four times in the regular season and went 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA, including a win in the most recent meeting on July 23. Lester is 2-3 with a 2.57 ERA in eight career postseason games - six starts - but went 0-2 against the Rays in the 2008 ALCS.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 6-1 in Lester's last seven home starts vs. Rays.
        * Rays are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Boston.
        * Under is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings in Boston.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. The Red Sox are expected to go with Jonny Gomes in left field against the left-handed Moore over Daniel Nava and Mike Carp.

        2. The Rays beat Boston in seven games in the 2008 ALCS - the only postseason meeting between the teams.

        3. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria is batting just .196 with 34 strikeouts in 26 postseason games.

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (+112, 6.5)

The Oakland Athletics have a recent history of making the playoffs only to disappoint when the postseason begins. They will set about changing that when they host the Detroit Tigers in the opener of the American League Division Series on Friday. The Tigers are enjoying their third straight trip to the postseason and advanced to the Championship Series in each of the past two seasons.

The Athletics made the playoffs six times since 2000 and advanced past the Division Series only once, when they were swept out of the ALCS by Detroit in 2006. The Tigers played heartbreaker for Oakland last October as well, claiming a 6-0 victory in a decisive Game 5 of the ALDS. The big difference this time around is the health of Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera, who is dealing with abdominal and groin injuries and managed just two extra-base hits in his final 25 games.

        TV: 9:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 70s with clear skies and winds blowing NNE at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Max Scherzer (21-3, 2.90 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Bartolo Colon (18-6, 2.65)

Scherzer is the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award and finished the season with a gem, striking out 10 and allowing two hits in seven scoreless innings at Minnesota. The 29-year-old punched out eight and yielded an unearned run on three hits 5 1/3 innings against Oakland in Game 4 last October but was left without a decision when the bullpen blew the save. Scherzer was lit up by the Athletics on Aug. 29, surrendering six runs (five earned) over five innings in another no decision.

Colon finished up the season with four straight wins, posting a 1.04 ERA and issuing only four walks in that span. The burly veteran went up against Scherzer on Aug. 29 and did not factor in the decision, allowing one run on seven hits in five innings. Colon missed the playoffs last season but is 2-3 with a 3.61 ERA in nine career postseason starts.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
        * Over is 4-1-2 in Scherzers last seven starts vs. Athletics.
        * Under is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Oakland.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Athletics LF Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) is hoping to play the outfield on Friday but could be stuck at DH, leaving Brandon Moss in left.

        2. Detroit RHP Bruce Rondon (elbow inflammation) and LHP Phil Coke (forearm) will not appear in the ALDS.

        3. Oakland RHP A.J. Griffin, who posted a 3.83 ERA over 200 innings in the regular season, was left off the ALDS roster due to mild tendinitis in his right elbow.
