College football odds: Week 6 opening line report

In one of the most entertaining games of the season thus far, the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the LSU Tigers 44-41 in a matchup of two SEC heavyweights.

The Bulldogs (3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS) have beaten some big names to start the season with their only blemish coming courtesy of the Clemson Tigers in the opening game of the campaign.

Coming off that massive win against LSU, the Bulldogs now must travel to Tennessee to face the Volunteers (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS).

Georgia has won straight up in three consecutive meetings with the Volunteers and both won and covered as 2.5-point faves in Knoxville back in 2011; the last meeting at Tennessee.

Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, sent out a line of Bulldogs -14 after he and his team were all between 13 and 17.

"Offshores have lower and we could've gone that way with Georgia RB (Todd) Gurly questionable but with him in the lineup, I like where we're at."

Maryland Terrapins at Florida State Seminoles (-17)

The Maryland Terrapins (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) have satisfied faithful backers so far during an unblemished start to the season. Maryland is one of four programs in the country that is 4-0 ATS and one of just eight squads without an ATS loss. But Korner feels they'll have their hands full with quarterback Jameis Winston and the Seminoles (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS).

"The range went from -14 to -21 and we decided in the middle with FSU -17," Korner told Covers. "Maryland has shown well of late and are competitive here. I wouldn't be surprised to see this line drop a little. But FSU's overall team strength in so many areas will show through here."

Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+4)

Played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas

The Irish (3-2, 0-4-1) are coming off a poor performance at home against the Oklahoma Sooners which saw them on the wrong end of a 35-21 scoreline. The Irish have been fairly abysmal both on the field and against the spread. They are one of just eight teams that have yet to cover a spread this season.

"This is in a neutral field and to tell you the truth, we don't like Notre Dame at all," said Korner. "We sent out ASU -4 but a gun to our heads we could easily go higher. Notre Dame can't stop anyone and they're facing a quality team here."

Ohio State Buckeyes at Northwestern Wildcats (+6)

The Buckeyes (5-0 SU, 3-1-1 ATS) are coming off a massive 31-24 win against Wisconsin to get their Big 10 season off to a great start. It won't get easier for them as they (along with College Gameday) go to Evanston, Illinois to face the Northwestern Wildcats (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS), who are off to a great start themselves.

"We were all around the -6 number. There wasn't much to discuss here. Big Ten clash with two good teams. I don't see this number running in either direction by kick-off."

Beyond the BCS: Capping college football's small conferences

Some of the best betting value in college football is hiding beyond the BCS, in the small conferences. Each week, Covers Experts’ Doc’s Sports will look at the little programs that could help you make big cash this college season.

Team to watch: Northern Illinois Huskies (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS)

This week: +9 at Kent State

The Huskies won’t sneak up on anyone this year - not after going 12-1 in the 2012 regular season en route to an Orange Bowl appearance. Still, they’re rolling even with a bulls-eye on their back. So far in 2013, Northern Illinois’ 4-0 record includes defeats of Iowa and Purdue. The MAC favorites have scored at least 30 points in all four contests and they have posted at least 43 points in three of four.

Ranked No. 23 in the USA Today poll, NIU is 6-2-1 ATS in its last nine road games and 12-5-2 ATS in its last 19 overall. On Saturday it will visit a Kent State team that is 1-3-1 ATS in its last five home games and 0-5-1 ATS in its last six against the Huskies. The Golden Flashes’ three losses this season have all come by at least 19 points.

Team to beware: UL Monroe Warhawks (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS)

This week: +7 vs. Western Kentucky

What a difference a year makes. In 2012, the Warhawks beat Arkansas, lost to Auburn in overtime, and made it to a bowl game. By comparison, last season they barely lost to Baylor 47-42 and issued a 63-10 beatdown on Tulane. This season they got humiliated by Baylor 70-7 and fell to Tulane 31-14 (Tulane, meanwhile, was coming off a 52-17 blowout loss at Syracuse).

Heading into Thursday’s home game against Western Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe is 1-6 ATS in its last seven at home, 1-5 ATS in its last six overall, and 0-4 ATS in its last four against teams with winning records. The Hilltoppers are 3-2 with a win over SEC foe Kentucky. They are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 against opponents with losing records. UL Monroe also lost star QB Kolton Browning to injury and will be handing the offense to sophomore Brayle Brown.

Total team: Troy Trojans (2-3 SU, 5-0 O/U)

This week: 61.5 vs. South Alabama

The over is 11-1 in Troy’s last 12 overall, 6-0 in its last six home games, and 5-1 in its last six against Sun Belt opposition. Its first conference contest of 2013 resulted in a 41-34 loss at Arkansas State. Ironically, the Trojans’ last conference game of 2012 was a setback by the same score to the same team.

Last season they pinned 31 points on a South Alabama that is 2-2 so far this season. The Jaguars have scored at least 21 points in all four games and have given up at least 22 in all four. They will have to shore up their pass defense (249.0 yards per game) against a Troy squad that is averaging 320.8 yards per game through the air.

Thursday's games

Texas QB Ash (concussion) is out; McCoy gets start here, with a more mobile QB Swoopes expected to play. Longhorns are 7-1 in last eight games vs Iowa State, winning 33-7/37-14 in last two meetings. Texas won last four visits to Ames, with last three wins here by 21+; they're 11-7 in last 18 games as road favorite, but lost 40-21 at BYU in only road game this yeaer, allowing 550 rushing yards. Cyclones are 6-9 as home underdogs under Rhoads- they've already lost to a I-AA team this year, having lost 13 of 22 starters from LY. Texas covered four of last six series games.

Last four Western Kentucky-ULM games were decided by total of 12 points, with underdogs covering all four and ULM winning three-- teams split a pair of 3-point decisions here. ULM has 673 passing yards in last two meetings. WKU is 4-1 as road favorite but is 0-2 on road this year; they gave up 82 points in losses at Tennessee/USA. ULM won at Wake Forest but lost last week as 13-point home favorite vs Tulane, bad loss; they are 7-5 in last dozen games as a home dog. Hilltoppers beat Navy and Kentucky but turned ball over five times in six plays at Tennessee.

Home side won last four UCLA-Utah games, with three of four games decided by 21+ points. Bruins are 4-2 as road favorite last five seasons, 2-2 under Mora- they're scoring 52.7 ppg this year, winning 41-21 in its only road game, at Nebraska. Over last decade, Utah is 6-2 as home dog; its two I-A home games this year were decided by total of seven points. UCLA outgained first three opponents by average of 206 yards a game, running ball for 284.3 ypg. Utes allowed 443+ TY in all three of its I-A games; they've been off since 20-13 (+6.5) rivalry win at BYU.

Friday's games

This is first time this century Utah State is fave in this series; underdogs are 8-3 vs spread in last eleven meetings, with BYU winning 10 of last 11 series games but Aggies covered last five, losing 6-3/27-24 in last two meetings. State opened with four road games in five weeks, losing by 4 at Utah, 3 at USC- they're 5-1 in last six games as a home favorite. Cougars lost rivalry game to Utah at home; they scored 16-13 in losses this year, 37-40 in wins, losing by 3 at rainy Virginia in only away game. BYU covered its last seven games as a road underdog; they've won three of last four visits here, but did not cover any of the four.

Dingwell came off bench to spark San Diego State's 39-38 (+6.5) win LY at Nevada; 1-3 Aztecs are struggling this year, blowing home game late vs Oregon State (threw pick-6 with lead in last 4:00) and beating a lowly New Mexico State team only 26-16 last week. Nevada got whacked bad in money grab games at UCLA/Florida State, then beat Hawai'i and Air Force at home; 375 rushing yards Falcons gained with its #1 QB out for game is alarming for Wolf Pack defense. Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones (+8, 56.5)

A win over Kansas State quieted the critics briefly, but Texas still has some work to do to get back national attention. The Longhorns look to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they visit Iowa State on Thursday. Texas coach Mack Brown is under fire to put a championship-caliber team back on the field, and even school legend Earl Campbell recently called for his firing.

“Nobody likes to get fired or leave a job, but things happen,” Campbell told KRIV-TV in Houston. “I’d go on record and say yes, I think it’s time.” Brown is under contract until 2020 with one of the largest annual salaries in the NCAA but is just 24-18 since a loss to Alabama in the 2009 National Championship game. The Cyclones don’t have quite the storied history of the Longhorns but are always a pesky opponent for the Big 12’s top tier and are coming off an impressive win over Tulsa.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Texas opened at -9 and has moved to -7.5. Total moved from 56 to 56.5.

Western Kentucky Hilltopppers at UL Monroe Warhawks (+7, 48.5)

The Warhawks will be without starting QB Kolton Browning Thursday. He is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a quad injury. Browning, who has passed for 967 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions, will be replaced with backup sophomore Brayle Brown, who is making his first start. UL Monroe is 2-3 on the year, having lost two straight and allowing 101 total points in defeats to Baylor and Tulane.

Western Kentucky comes into Thursday riding back-to-back wins over FCS Morgan State and Navy, covering the spread in both games. Hilltoppers RB Antonio Andrews has been a dominant force on offense with 727 rushing yards, 154 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. WKU will be out for revenge after losing to ULM in overtime during last year’s homecoming.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

LINE: WKU opened as a 4.5-point favorite and was bet up to -7. Total steady at 48.5.

UCLA Bruins at Utah Utes (+5.5, 60.5)

After winning its first three games in convincing fashion, UCLA begins Pac-12 play on Saturday at Utah, where the 13th-ranked Bruins have been outscored 75-12 in their last two visits. The Utes have the personnel to keep pace with a UCLA offense averaging 52.7 points, but Utah's defense remains a question mark. Both teams are coming off a bye week, and UCLA should be particularly well-rested after routing New Mexico State 59-13 on Sept. 21.

Utah opened the last two seasons with four straight conference losses before dropping this year's opener 51-48 in overtime to Oregon State on Sept. 14. The Utes followed the close loss with an impressive 20-13 win at BYU on Sept. 21, when sophomore quarterback Travis Wilson continued his strong play with 273 passing yards and two touchdowns. Wilson needs a repeat performance against UCLA, which is seeking its first 4-0 start since 2005 after winning its first three games by a total of 93 points.

BYU Cougars at Utah State Aggies (-6, 57.5)

The Brigham Young Cougars boast one of the most robust rushing games in the NCAA - but they'll face a significant test Friday night as they visit the Utah State Aggies at Romney Stadium. Utah State is allowing an average of 17 points per game - good for 23rd in the nation - and has surrendered fewer than 127 rushing yards per game through its first five contests. The Aggies will have to deal with a dual threat in the BYU backfield, with quarterback Taysom Hill fifth in the country at 141.3 rushing yards per game and running back Jamaal Williams13th at 126 ypg.

Utah State could use a boost with the return to form of Joe Hill. The junior running back has been battling injuries all season and had just nine carries for 30 yards in last week's one-sided win over San Jose State. Hill is considered day-to-day for Friday's game. Backup Joey DeMartino has fared well in Hill's absence - carrying 34 times for 297 yards - but lacks breakaway speed and could find things difficult against a formidable Cougars defense. BYU holds a 45-34-3 edge in the all-time series, including a 6-3 victory last Oct. 5.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

LINE: Utah State opened as a six-point favorite but the line has since dropped to -5.5. The O/U has climbed from 56.5 to 57.5.

Nevada Wolf Pack at San Diego State Aztecs (-6, 58)

The Wolf Pack offense is rolling again following a momentary hiccup, and will look to carry over its momentum into Friday's showdown with Mountain West rival San Diego State. Nevada scored 76 points in consecutive victories over Hawaii and Air Force, and hits the road for the first time since a 62-7 drubbing at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles. The Aztecs are also coming off a victory, defeating the New Mexico State Aggies 26-16 last weekend to halt a season-opening three-game losing streak.

Nevada is led by multi-talented quarterback Cody Fajardo, who threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns and added a pair of rushing scores in last week's 45-42 win over Air Force. Fajardo did considerable damage despite dealing with a knee injury that forced him to miss games against the Seminoles and Warriors. The junior signal caller will be wearing a knee brace against San Diego State as a precautionary measure, but has told reporters that the device does not inhibit his ability to run.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: SDSU opened as a 5.5-point favorite, but the line has since shifted to six. The O/U has risen from 57 to 58.

Iowa won five of last seven games with Michigan State, in series where favorites covered four of last five played here. Spartans' 27-21 win here in 2011 was their first in last six visits to Iowa City. State won eight of last ten Big Dozen road games, covering four of last five as a underdog on road. Dogs are 5-2 vs spread in Iowa's last seven conference home tilts. State was held under 300 TY in all three I-A games, losing 17-13 in only road game, at Notre Dame (+4.5). Hawkeyes allowed total of 10 points and 20 first downs in last two games, winning 59-3/23-7.

Florida State won its last six games with Maryland (4-2 vs spread) with Seminoles winning last eight played here by average score of 39-18 (6-2 vs spread). FSU won last seven ACC home games, covering five of last six, with average score in those six games 46-11. Maryland is improved this year, scoring 39.8 ppg in 4-0 start, including 37-0 win over a West Virginia they've struggled with in past, but this is still step up in class for Terps, who are 12-14-1 as road dog since '07, 5-5 under Edsall. Georgia won 44-41 vs LSU last week, giving up 372 passing yards but doing enough to win; quick turnaround to face Tennessee squad they've beaten last three times by 7-8-27 points. Dawgs lost 38-35 at Clemson in only road game this year; they're 7-4 in last 11 games as road favorite. Tennessee is rebuilding- they've allowed 393/392 yards in wins against WKU/South Alabama-- Oregon/Georgia beat them 59-14/31-17, but they were road games. Since 2007, Vols are 1-9 as home underdogs- QBs had hard time in losses, completing just 29-63 passes vs Oregon/Florida.

Florida only threw ball 18 times with backup QB Murphy in 24-7 win at Kentucky last week; they've won last six games with Arkansas, going 3-1 vs spread in last four. Defense hasn't allowed more than 66 yards on ground, while holding three of four opponents under 50% passing- they are 5-8 as home favorites under Muschamp. Razorbacks lost last couple games to Rutgers/Texas A&M; Aggies had 262 yards rushing, 261 thru air last week. Arkansas is 1-6 in last seven games as a road dog. Bielema was 3-1 in his last four games as a road underdog at Wisconsin.

Oklahoma (-5.5) beat TCU 24-17 in Fort Worth LY, outgaining Frogs by 71 yards; Sooners are off 35-21 win (-3.5) at Notre Dame, where they scored two quick TDs in first 5:00, then held Irish off, running ball for 238 yards, passing for 212. Oklahoma is 7-8 in last 15 games as a home favorite, 2-1 this year. Horned Frogs covered six of last eight games as a road underdog; both their losses this season (LSU/Texas Tech) are by 10 points, with TCU outgaining Tech by 65 yards. Frogs have nine starters back on defense. Oklahoma QB Bell is making just his third career start.

Oklahoma State won three of last four games with K-State, gaining 500+ TY in all four games, but they lost 44-30 in Manhattan LY; Wildcats lost last three visits to Stillwater, losing by 7-2-5 points. Average total in last four K-State visits here is 78.5. Since 2008, OSU is 23-7-1 as favorite at home. Wildcats are 10-3 as road underdogs since Snyder returned as HC at K-State, but they lost by 10 at Texas last game and also lost at home to I-AA North Dakota State- they allowed 215-227 rushing yards in the two losses. Dogs are 4-2 vs spread in last six series games.

Vanderbilt (+7) won 19-15 at Missouri LY, despite being outgained by 100 yards; Tigers completed just 14-40 passes. Commodores are 0-2 in SEC play, allowing 35-39 points- they're still 10-8 against spread under Franklin in league games, but 8-1 overall as a home favorite. 4-0 Mizzou is scoring 45.5 ppg, but its only road win was 45-28 (-2.5) at Indiana, in game where Tigers outgained IU by 148 yards but allowed 377 yards in air. Mizzou is 6-3 in last nine games as a road underdog- they're 7-10 vs spread iin conference play the last two seasons.

Stanford won six of last eight games with Washington, but was upset LY in Seattle, 17-13; favorites are 3-1 vs spread in last four series games. Huskies lost three of last four visits here, losing 65-21/34-14 in last two trips. Cardinal is 2-6 in last eight games as a home favorite, but is 14-7 vs spread in Pac-12 games under Shaw. U-Dub has 18 starters back- they beat Illinois 34-24 (-10.5) in Chicago; since '07, Huskies are 8-17 as road underdogs- they have 244+ rushing yards in every game. Stanford gave up 689 passing yards in last two games, but had big leads both games.

Auburn won seven of last nine games with Ole Miss, with average total of 65 in last four games; favorites are 6-3 vs spread in last nine. Rebels lost last four visits here, all by 13+ points- they're 5-1 vs spread after a loss, under Freeze. Ole Miss got held to 46 rushing yards in 25-0 loss at Alabama last week; Rebels had 200+ rushing yards in last five games vs Auburn. Tigers allowed 430 rushing yards in splitting pair of SEC tilts; since '09, they're 5-3 as home underdogs. New QB Marshall completed only 58% passes in his first four college starts for Auburn.

Arizona State is playing 4th tough opponent in row without a Saturday off; look for Notre Dame to pound ball vs ASU defense that has to be a little tired after giving up 231-240-247 rushing yards in last three games. Since 2005, Irish are 13-8 as road underdogs- they ran ball for 220 yards in loss to Oklahoma last week, after averaging only 89.7 ypg on ground in previous three games. Sun Devils got whacked 42-28 at Stanford in only road game this year; this game is at neutral Dallas site. Two teams teams that beat ND this year gained 460/450 TY, scored 41-35 points.

Ohio State won four in row, nine of last ten games vs Northwestern, as Wildcats were outscored by average score of 51-9 in last four meetings. Buckeyes won four of last five visits to Evanston, winning 45-10/54-10 in last two. OSU is 0-4 vs spread in last four tries as a Big Dozen road favorites- they covered only road game this year 52-34 (-14) over Cal in Berkeley. Wildcats covered only once in last five games as a Big Dozen home dog; they also won at Cal this season, beating Bears 44-30 (-5.5) in its season opener- they've run ball for 200+ yards in all four '13 games.

Penn State won its last 12 games with Indiana, but covered only two of last six vs Hoosiers; Lions won their last five visits here, but only one of those five wins was by more than six points. Indiana is 1-3 vs spread in series when spread was single digit; they've lost 10 of last 11 Big Dozen home games, with three of last four losses by 6 or less points. Penn State is 11-4 in last 15 games as a road favorite, but this first true road game for frosh QB Hackenberg, who completed 62% of passes thru first four college games. Penn State did beat Syracuse 23-17 on a neutral field.

We dug up these vital betting tidbits for some of Saturday's college football action that will help you make the right call before kickoff.

- The Air Force Falcons face the Navy Midshipmen in early action with the latter as 11.5-point home faves. The Falcons are 1-9 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

- The Florida State Seminoles ride an eight-game winnings streak against ACC opposition into Saturday's matchup with the Maryland Terrapins. The 'Noles are 15.5-point home faves.

- The Penn State Nittany Lions are one of 12 schools that have scored on 100 percent of their possessions inside the red zone.

- The aforementioned Nittany Lions travel to Indiana to face the high-octane Hoosiers. The over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in Indiana and the total for Saturday's game is 65.5.

- Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater tossed five TDs en route to a 45-17 victory over Temple last season. Teddy and the Cards are 32-point road faves Saturday.

- Marshall is 11th in the nation converting 54 percent of its third down conversions.

- Ohio is at Akron Saturday. The Bobcats have won five straight meetings and have covered the spread in four of those five matchups. The Zips are 5-point home dogs.

- Bowling Green tossed a 24-0 shutout at UMass last season and covered as 19.5-point faves. This year, the Falcons are 26.5-point home faves with UMass visiting.

- The Northern Illinois Huskies have defeated Kent State in the previous six meetings are are 5-0-1 ATS in that stretch. The Huskies are 9-point road faves Saturday.

- The Miami Hurricanes are Saturday's top consensus pick at 78.23 percent as 5.5-point home faves against Georgia Tech.

- The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 home games. They are 7.5-point home dogs versus East Carolina.

- The Oklahoma State Cowboys are riding a seven game ATS winning streak at home. They are favored by 13.5 with Kansas State visiting.

- Cal is tops in the country running an average of 98 plays per game.

- The Washington State Cougars are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings at Cal. The Cougars are 1.5-point road faves.

- Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly has thrown for more than 300 yards in each of the Sun Devils’ first four games. The Notre Dame defense allows 230 yards passing per game and are 6-point home dogs against the Sun Devils.

- Louisiana Tech is one of five programs with an O/U record of 0-5. They have a total of 60 when they travel to UTEP Saturday.

The odds are jumping all over the NCAAF Week 6 board, especially in Big Ten matchups. We talk with sportsbooks about the biggest line adjustments, betting trends and where the odds will end up come kickoff Saturday:

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes – Open: -4.5, Move: -7

Early money came in strong on Miami and forced books to jump right over the dead number of -5 and go straight to -6. That massive move didn’t stop the action on the Hurricanes and some books have gone as high as a touchdown on this ACC contest.

“With over 90 percent of the action on the Hurricanes, we reluctantly went to Miami -7 in hopes of seeing some kind of buyback as well as stopping our bettors from just hammering Miami because our liability on this game is significant,” Michael Stewart of CarbonSports.ag, tells Covers. “But there’s no question, our sharper players are going to take the seven in this game.”

Illinois Fighting Illini at Nebraska Cornhuskers – Open: -10, Move: -8.5

The status of Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez has shrunk this Big Ten line. Martinez is going to miss Saturday’s home game, leaving the Huskers to go with redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. under center.

“Even if (Martinez) played, he would be playing hurt,” Aron Black of Bet365.com, tells Covers. “Turf toe is not an easy thing to just ignore. Action has liked Illinois plus the points since release and with the recent news the total has gone to a low of 59.5 and back to 60 but is still getting played Over.”

Georgia State Panthers at Alabama Crimson Tide – Open: 57, Move: 54

Surprisingly, bettors are siding with the Panthers against the defending national champs. Alabama’s defense has lost a bit of its luster and the early action isn’t sold on the Tide covering this massive pointspread.

“With this spread in the 50s, we can move this game as aggressively as we want without worrying about it landing,” says Stewart.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Michigan Wolverines – Open: -20.5, Move: -18.5

Michigan is coming off a bye after two less-than-impressive outings versus Akron and UConn, failing to cover the spread in both contests. Minnesota had its undefeated streak snapped at home to Iowa last weekend, a game in which the betting public was all over the underdog Hawkeyes.

“Action has been on Minnesota plus the points before moves, but Michigan is a banker for the weekend on a lot of parlay tickets,” says Black.

Penn State Nittany Lions at Indiana Hoosiers – Open: +4.5, Move: +3.5

Sharp money swayed this line Wednesday, coming in hard on the home underdog and forcing this line to move a point. The sharps have been pounding Indiana while the public is balancing that action with money on PSU, making this a Sharps-vs.-Squares Big Ten battle.

“With 75 percent of the action backing Penn State, we might consider going back to +4 but at this point we want to write more Penn State tickets because we respect the Indiana side,” says Stewart.
