    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some NFL football trends to ponder with Week 4 upon us..........

-- Browns are 5-2 in last seven games as a home underdog.

-- Steelers are 5-12 in last 17 games away from home.

-- Texans are 8-4-1 in last 13 games as a home underdog.

-- Tennessee is 2-5 in its last seven games as a home favorite.

-- Falcons are 18-7-1 in last 26 non-divisional home games.

-- Saints are 27-13-1 in their last 41 home games..

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's First List of 13: Why two lists today????..........

    13) Of the five NL playoff teams, only the Dodgers are in the top 10 in MLB payrolls; surprised to see the Braves with only the #19 payroll. They don’t get the credit they deserve for long-term excellence.

    12) When the Manager of the Year results are released, they should also give out the names of anyone who didn’t vote for Clint Hurdle or Terry Francona, just so we know who the nitwits are.

    11) Since 1985, NFL teams that are 0-3 are 38-77 SU in their fourth game, 54-57-4 against the spread. Three of the NFL’s six winless teams are favored this week. Three of the seven unbeaten teams are underdogs.

    10) Eagles (24), Packers (21) have the most plays of 20+ yards so far this season. Tennessee (6) has the least, followed by Rams-Jags-Panthers with 8 and yes, the impotent Rams already played their 4th game.

    9) Lions are only NFL team that hasn’t given up a 20-yard play on a 3rd down; that covers the 34 third down plays Detroit opponents have had this season.

    8) Miami Dolphins are playing their 78th Monday night game this week; 53 of the first 77 (68.8%) came at home.

    7) Akron extended hoop coach Keith Dambrot thru 2023, that’s ten years from now. Dambrot is probably best known for being Lebron James’ high school coach, but he has done a terrific job with the Zips.

    6) Veteran assistant basketball coach Bob Cantu, who has been at USC for several years under a few different coaches, has surfaced as one of Tim Floyd’s assistants at UTEP. When a school changes coaches and they keep one of the holdover assistants, that’s quite a compliment.

    5) Sacramento Kings gave DeMarcus Cousins a 4-year, $62M extension; he averaged 17.1 ppg and 9.9 rebounds a game LY. They should put Shaquille O’Neal in charge of Cousins’ development, seeing how Shaq is a partial owner of the team now.

    4) Total in the Cal-Oregon game Saturday is 85; not sure if I’ve ever seen that before, not even when our man John Jenkins was coaching the Run-and-Shoot at Houston. I mean, the game could end 42-41 and the under would still cash. Crazy, just plain crazy.

    3) Former used car dealer Alan R. Selig is retiring as baseball commissioner after the 2014 season, when he will be 79 years old; any guesses on who replaces him?

George W Bush? George Will? Cal Ripken? Tony Larussa (hey, he’s a lawyer)? One of those Ivy League wonderboys who keep getting GM jobs in their 30’s? Selig is making roughly $15M a year, so it should be a highly sought-after position.

    2) I’m wondering if it is harder for a guy who was an only child to become the leader of a team? Has anyone ever done a study on this? Seriously if you’re drafting a QB to become the face of your franchise, shouldn’t you have information like this?

An only child spends less time around other kids growing up; you wonder if it affects their interactions with their peers as they grow older. It is a billion dollar industry, after all, helps to have all the knowledge you can have.

    1) College basketball practice started Friday; teams can have 30 practices over the next 42 days, when games start. College hoop is this website’s favorite sport, so we’re excited about the season starting.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's Second List of 13: Because its your lucky day...........

    13) New rule suggestion: Every year a major league team loses 100+ games, they have to lower ticket prices by 10%+ the following year; this would discourage teams tanking like the Astros and Marlins did this year.

Marlins fired GM Larry Beinfast Friday, after 12 years with the team.

Miami’s situation is especially hideous, since they just got a gorgeous new stadium built by the taxpayers. At least you can see that the Astros have a plan to win eventually. Houston is the 4th-biggest city in the country; they should have a prosperous franchise.

    12) Key word there is should; Astros took 1B Nate Freiman from San Diego in the Rule 5 draft last December, but they didn’t want to keep him on the big league roster all year, so they put him on waivers and the A’s took him in March. Big Nate helped Oakland win the AL West as a sub; with the collection of stiffs the Astros played all year, they couldn’t have found a spot for Freiman?

They had freakin’ Carlos Pena on the team, for Pete’s sake. Not good.

    11) One last Astros note as their six-month death march crawls to an end; they went 6-31 against Texas/Oakland this year, 2-17 against the Rangers. Whats going to change for these three teams between now and next year?

Why should 2014 be any better for Houston, other than finally bringing George Springer up and letting the Wojciehowski kid pitch? It takes more time than other sports to develop a winning baseball team. In the meantime, Astro management should cut their fans a break on ticket prices.

    10) Arizona Diamondbacks have played 78 extra innings this year, which is four short of the all-time record, set way back in 1918.

    9) Jason Giambi has two walk-off HRs against the White Sox this year, the first player to do that against any team since 1968, when Detroit’s Gates Brown hit two against Boston. Tigers won the World Series that year.

Ironic that Mr Brown passed away Friday, at age 74.

    8) Nets hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1982; saw the game program this week, it cost $4. Wonder what the game program for this year’s All-Star Game costs? $25? $30? More?

    7) TNT analyst/former NBA coach Mike Fratello was coaching the Ukrainian national team this summer; hopefully TNT or NBA Network got some behind-the-scenes access to do some features to show this winter. Would be interesting to see how an American coach works with a team of foreign players.

    6) Florida Gators are -13 at Kentucky this week, with a backup QB making his first career road start. It’s the lowest series pointspread since 2007. Florida covered the last five series games.

    5) Wall Street Journal had an interesting article that blamed declining student attendance at college football games on fact that college football stadiums have terrible cellphone signals, and in this day and age, phone-addicted kids can’t go three hours without texting or tweeting.

Some schools are considering spending $2M or more to make their stadium’s WiFi system state-of-the-art.

    4) Air Force suspended its young QB Awini indefinitely, which is very bad news for an inexperienced team that was already struggling.

    3) Virginia Tech played its 27th Thursday night game on the ESPN networks this week, the most of any college football team.

    2) Colorado Rockies gave retiring star Todd Helton a horse as a going-away present; I never would’ve thought of that.

    1) Robinson Cano’s asking price this winter: $305M, 10 years. Alrighty then, guess that rules the A’s out. No harm in asking, but if he (or anyone else) gets a 10-year contract, I’ll be stunned. Those very long contracts have proven to be mostly a disaster for ballclubs.

      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 14

Calgary (9-3) @ Hamilton (6-6)—TiCats won five of last seven games after 1-4 start, covering six of the seven but they lost 26-22 (+5.5) at McMahon two weeks ago in game where they outgained Stampeders by 105 yards, were +1 in turnovers, led 15-13 at half, but only scored seven second half points in losing third in row and 7th in last eight tries vs Calgary. Hamilton won its last three home games, scoring 34 ppg; they held off Montreal 28-26 last week despite gaining only 288 yards, its second-lowest total of season. First road game in three weeks for Stamps, who were upset at home by Toronto last week; Calgary won four of its last five games on foreign soil. Five of last seven series games in Hamilton stayed under total. Five of last seven TiCat games went over the total.
