    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Some college football trends to ponder with Week 4 upon us..........

-- Vanderbilt is 6-2 in its last eight games as a double digit favorite.

-- South Florida is 5-18-1 vs spread in its last 24 lined games.

-- Ole Miss coach Freeze is 22-6 vs spread in his last 28 lined games.

-- USC is 4-13 against the spread in its last 17 games overall.

-- Wake Forest is 6-12 in its last 18 games as an underdog.

-- Florida Atlantic covered nine of last ten as a road underdog.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Where will the NL Wild Game be played? Reds-Pirates play three games this weekend, winner gets home field. Six months of games boils down to one weekend, as teams jockey for position for next week’s playoffs.

    12) Whole NFC East is playing road games against the AFC West this weekend; with a combined 3-9 record thru three weeks, it doesn’t look like Dallas is going to have much of a fight for the division title.

    11) Three of the seven NFL unbeatens are underdogs this week; three of the six winless teams are favored. Go figure.

    10) LSU QB Zach Mettenberger originally went to Georgia, but got kicked off the team and wound up at LSU, where his career has blossomed under former NFL coach Cam Cameron.

Zach’s mom still works in the Georgia athletic department; Dawgs’ coach Mark Richt gave her this week off. Big game in Athens.

    9) Steelers-Vikings was once a Super Bowl matchup; now it’s a battle of winless teams in London. Someone is coming back across the pond 0-4, which will make for a very long flight and bye week.

    8) Oklahoma visits Notre Dame, where pass interference flags fly like confetti when the Irish have the ball. Sooner QB Blake Bell is making his first road start; he’s more of a runner than a passer, but was 27-37/413 in his first start against Tulsa. This will be a little different than playing against Tulsa. OK, a lot different.

    7) Bucs coach Schiano went ahead and benched Josh Freeman for rookie Mike Glennon, a much anticipated move. Curious to see how the team reacts, not like Glennon did that great when NC State cut Russell Wilson loose so Glennon could start for two years in Raleigh.

    6) USC is a 6-point underdog at Arizona State, which played Wisconsin, Stanford the last two weeks; what genius made that schedule? First Pac-12 road start for Trojan QB Kessler; the way USC fans seem to despise Lane Kiffin, maybe USC will play better in a hostile environment.

    5) All three Charger games have been decided by exactly three points, with both San Diego losses coming in last 0:30. Dallas ran the Rams out of JerryWorld last week. Road team won last four meetings in this series.

    4) Wisconsin coach Gary Anderson is 16-3 vs spread as a road underdog; Badgers lost their first road game 32-30 at Arizona State, in a bizarre ending. Big game in the Big Dozen.

    3) In New England’s first three games, they faced two rookie QBs and then Josh Freeman, who was benched three days later; now they’re facing Matt Ryan’s Falcons, who are 19-4 vs spread off a loss under Mike Smith. Major step or two up in class for New England’s young receivers.

    2) Can Texas avoid a second consecutive September meltdown by coming from behind to get in the Wild Card game? Can the Indians complete a fantastic season by making the playoffs? Who will be top seed in the AL?

    1) Dolphins at Saints is an excellent Monday night game. Once upon a team, Drew Brees left the Chargers as a free agent after shoulder surgery; the Miami head coach, acting on medical advice, chose Daunte Culpepper over Brees as a free agent signee.

Brees signed with the Saints and has done great. The Miami coach quit after two years, but has done well since elsewhere. Guy named Nick Saban.

NHL Central Division preview: Hawks poised for another run

The Central Division has the potential to be one of the most top-heavy in the league with the Blackhawks and Blues leading the way.

That is unless teams like the Wild, Jets and Avalanche are able to make some headway.

Here’s a look at how all seven teams shape up entering the 2013-14 season.

      Nashville Predators (2012: 16-23-9)

      Odds to win division: 25-1

      Season point total: 82.5

Why to bet the Predators: The Preds are hoping that Seth Jones can make an immediate impact on the blue line, adding to an already solid group that is headed by veteran Shea Weber. If there’s one thing we know about the Preds, it’s that they’re well-coached and get a lot out of a little in terms of talent.

Why not to bet the Predators: There are no bonafide goal scorers up front, with the likes of Mike Fisher and Viktor Stalberg counted on to lead the charge. Goaltender Pekka Rinne has been asked to shoulder too much of the load in recent years and that won’t change this season.

Season point total pick: Over 82.5

      Minnesota Wild (2012: 26-19-3)

      Odds to win division: 13-2

      Season point total: 96.5

Why to bet the Wild: This is the year the Wild are expected to take a big leap forward with the duo of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter now fully acclimated with the team. Fans in Minnesota are among the best in the league, not to mention starved for a winner and expectations are high for good reason.

Why not to bet the Wild: The Wild have had a tough time stepping up in class, as we saw in the opening round of last year’s playoffs against Chicago. Until proven otherwise, that’s still the knock on this team. Losing guys like Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Devin Setoguchi could leave an offensive void.

Season point total pick: Over 96.5

      Colorado Avalanche (2012: 16-25-7)

      Odds to win division: 25-1

      Season point total: 81.5

Why to bet the Avalanche: An infusion of young talent, not to mention an NHL legend behind the bench, has optimism running high in Colorado – and for good reason. The Avs might be a year or two away from contending, but this should be an exciting, upset-minded team to watch this season.

Why not to bet the Avalanche: They’re unproven. While the pieces are in place for the Avs to be good for years to come, there will undoubtedly be some growing pains. How will Patrick Roy’s coaching style translate to the pros? He’s got the job done leading teenagers, but this is a different situation.

Season point total pick: Over 81.5

      Dallas Stars (2012: 22-22-4)

      Odds to win division: 15-1

      Season point total: 87.5

Why to bet the Stars: Sweeping changes are expected to breathe some life into what has become a forgotten team in the West. Tyler Seguin is the new face of the franchise and should provide excitement up front. Lindy Ruff is a proven winner behind the bench.

Why not to bet the Stars: It remains to be seen where leadership will come from inside the dressing room with veterans few and far between. Goaltender Kari Lehtonen has shown flashes of brilliance but consistency between the pipes, or lack thereof, remains a big issue in Dallas.

Season point total pick: Under 87.5

      Winnipeg Jets (2012: 24-21-3)

      Odds to win division: 25-1

      Season point total: 83.5

Why to bet the Jets: After falling just short of the postseason last spring, the Jets will be hungry to make the leap in 2013-14. Winnipeg didn’t do much to bolster its roster in the offseason, but keeps its core virtually intact and continuity isn’t a bad thing for a young squad.

Why not to bet the Jets: Is Ondrej Pavelec really the answer in goal? He’s held up reasonably well, but certainly isn’t a first-rate netminder. There’s plenty of grit up front, but not a lot of goal-scoring talent outside of Evander Kane and Andrew Ladd. The Jets defense is average at best.

Season point total pick: Over 83.5

      Chicago Blackhawks (2012: 36-7-5)

      Odds to win division: 1-2

      Season point total: 112.5

Why to bet the Blackhawks: Unlike in 2010, when the Blackhawks lost a ton of talent following their Stanley Cup run, they remain relatively intact off of their latest Cup victory. You would be hard-pressed to find a more talented team from top to bottom. Re-signing last spring’s breakout start, Bryan Bickell, was key.

Why not to bet the Blackhawks: It goes without saying, no team will carry a bigger target on its back than Chicago. The Blackhawks essentially won wire-to-wire last season but will be hard-pressed to duplicate that effort in 2013-14. How hungry will the ‘Hawks be after raising the Cup in two of the last four years.

Season point total pick: Under 112.5

      St. Louis Blues (2012: 29-17-2)

      Odds to win division: 5-2

      Season point total: 103.5

Why to bet the Blues: With a strong blue line and a balanced attack up front, the Blues are poised to take another run at the Blackhawks. Re-signing Alex Pieterangelo was critical, as was filling the void left by a retiring Andy McDonald. Derek Roy should fit in nicely as a second-line center.

Why not to bet the Blues: Who will be St. Louis’ go-to guy? Only three players reached double-digits in goals scored a year ago, and not much will change this season. The goaltending tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott looks good on paper, but both have been streaky.

Season point total pick: Under 103.5

        CFL
        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Week 14

British Columbia (8-4) @ Winnipeg (2-10)—Lions (-11) held Bombers off 27-20 in Week 6, completing just 13-28 passes but holding Winnipeg to four second half points. BC is off big road win in Regina behind backup QB Demarco; they had lost previous three road games before last week and are 5-3 vs spread as favorites this year, 1-1 on road, with only road wins in six tries 17-3 at Edmonton, 24-22 last week. Hapless Bombers just lost twice to Edmonton; they’re 2-7 vs spread in last nine games, 1-5 as home dogs, losing at home by 5-16-8-19-8 points, with only win an upset of Riders three weeks ago. Lions won last four series games, including Grey Cup win just two years ago—they split last four visits here; 14 of last 17 series games stayed under the total.

Calgary (9-3) @ Hamilton (6-6)—TiCats won five of last seven games after 1-4 start, covering six of the seven but they lost 26-22 (+5.5) at McMahon two weeks ago in game where they outgained Stampeders by 105 yards, were +1 in turnovers, led 15-13 at half, but only scored seven second half points in losing third in row and 7th in last eight tries vs Calgary. Hamilton won its last three home games, scoring 34 ppg; they held off Montreal 28-26 last week despite gaining only 288 yards, its second-lowest total of season. First road game in three weeks for Stamps, who were upset at home by Toronto last week; Calgary won four of its last five games on foreign soil. Five of last seven series games in Hamilton stayed under total. Five of last seven TiCat games went over the total.

Toronto (8-4) @ Edmonton (3-9)— Argos won last three games overall, all on road, scoring 33.3 ppg- seriously, who makes the CFL schedule, and how much Labatt’s do they drink doing it? This is Argos’ 4th road game in a row. Argonauts (-9) outlasted Edmonton 36-33 six weeks ago, in aerial battle where teams combined for 969 passing yards and neither team turned ball over; it was their second straight win over Eskimos for Toronto after five straight losses. Edmonton was 1-9 before sweeping pair from hapless Winnipeg; Eskimos are 5-1 vs spread since their bye, 1-3 as home underdog, losing home games by 21-14-1-3-10 points. Toronto lost four of its last five visits here, with last two losses by total of five points. Eight of last ten Toronto games, seven of last nine Edmonton games went over the total.

Saskatchewan (8-4) @ Montreal (5-7)—Sliding Roughriders lost last three games after 8-1 start, including unthinkable home loss to 2-10 Winnipeg; they led at halftime of all three games, were outscored 52-23 in second halves. Riders (-12) held off Montreal 24-21 at home six weeks ago, recovering four Alouette fumbles while holding Als to 13-28 passing in game Calvillo was injured. Riders lost four of last five visits here, with only win 27-24 (+11.5) vs Trestman-coached Als two years ago. Montreal lost tough 28-26 game to Hamilton last week; they’re 2-4 at home, with only one of the losses by more than eight points. Five of last seven series games stayed under the total, but six of last nine Montreal games and four of six Saskatchewan road games went over.

Blue Bombers at Lions: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Lions (+5.5, 50.5)

After letting a 20-point lead slip away at home in their last tilt, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers must be wondering what they need to do to win at their new stadium. The Blue Bombers will get another chance to improve on their dismal 1-5 record at Investors Group Field when they host the BC Lions on Friday. Despite having the league’s worst offense, Winnipeg sits just four points behind the Montreal Alouettes for the final playoff spot with six games remaining - and a win against a tired BC team would go a long way to closing that gap.

The Lions earned a hard-fought 24-22 road victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday without starting quarterback Travis Lulay, who will miss at least one more game with a shoulder injury. Backup Thomas DeMarco performed well in his first career start, throwing for 208 yards and two touchdowns and completing two key passes in the final minute to set up the winning field goal. BC also limited Saskatchewan to 39 rushing yards in a defensive performance more typical of its home games - and if the Lions bring the same defensive pressure against Winnipeg, the Blue Bombers might be overmatched.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE LIONS (8-4): DeMarco was benched for part of the second quarter last week and replaced by Buck Pierce - a veteran quarterback recently acquired from Winnipeg. Pierce began his career with the Lions but became the starter for the Blue Bombers in 2010 and could make an appearance on Friday if DeMarco falters. BC’s defense, which has allowed a league-low 88.3 rushing yards per game and just 249.3 passing yards, is tied for the league lead in interceptions with 14. Cornerback Cord Parks has three of those picks in his first CFL season, returning one for a touchdown.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2-10): Quarterback Max Hall will start on Friday after leaving last week’s game late with an undisclosed injury. Hall, who has completed 52-of-81 passes with two touchdowns and five interceptions in his first CFL season, told reporters on Monday that he wanted to return to the game but team doctors kept him out as a precaution. Winnipeg’s defense is tied for the league lead in sacks with 45, but it is also averaging 293.1 passing yards allowed per game - second-worst in the league.

        TRENDS:

        * Lions are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games.
        * Blue Bombers are 0-4 ATS in their last four Friday games.
        * Under is 14-3 in the last 17 meetings.
        * Lions are 2-6 ATS in their last eight meetings.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Lions RB Andrew Harris is third in the league in yards from scrimmage with 1,076.

        2. BC defeated the Blue Bombers 27-20 at home in Week 6.

        3. Winnipeg defensive end Alex Hall is tied for the league lead in sacks with 13.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to handicap the final MLB weekend series
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major League Baseball enters its final weekend of the regular season with a few teams still jockeying for position in the playoffs.

Here is a look at the finals series and some notes to keep in mind to help with your capping.

                  American League

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

The Red Sox will be able to clinch the top spot in the American League playoffs if they handle their business and win in Baltimore, or Seattle plays spoilers with victories against Oakland. The Sox will mix in some rest for players as manager John Farrell is putting players' health first.

“It’s important for us to prioritize the health of our guys first,” Farrell said. “That’s where our depth continues to play out.”

The Sox head into the weekend with 96 wins while the A's have 94.

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays

The Rays are one of the hottest teams in the league, but still have yet to clinch a playoff spot. They head into Friday's action winners of seven straight and 12 of 15 overall. They finish up in Toronto and are 10-6 versus the Jays in 2013.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

The Rangers are still alive in the wild card chase but will be in tough as the Angels will look to foil any dreams the Texas club has of playing in October.

"We know the Angels have a great team but we've swept them before and we know it's not impossible," Rangers SS Elvis Andrus said. "Just keeping winning, that's our mindset right now. We're competing and that's what baseball is all about."

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox

The Royals made a valiant push for the postseason, but fell just short. The batting lineup flat lined when it mattered most as the Royals were shutout 4-0 and 6-0 by the Mariners earlier this week and found themselves on the outside looking in.

Alex Gordon believes KC will close out with winning baseball, but the Royals could be a deflated club.

"It's unfortunate, but we've got four more games and we're going to try to finish the season strong," Gordon said prior to Thursday's action.

                  Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins

The Tribe are very much alive and head into Thursday's matchup one game up on the Rangers for the wild card. They opened a four-game set in Minnesota and posted a 6-5 victory Thursday.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros

The Yanks are out. The 'Stros have lost 12-straight ball games.

                  Oakland A's at Seattle Mariners

The A's can take the AL's top spot if they can beat a tough Mariners squad and the Red Sox fail in Baltimore. The A's have earned F's versus the Mariners this season, however, posting a 6-10 record in 2013.

                  National League

Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets

The Mets have closed the season very positively and have won eight of their last 12 ball games. They've got a four-game set at home versus Milwaukee to close the season but dropped Game 1 4-2 Thursday night.

                  Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds

Both of these teams have clinched, but Pittsburgh is still eying the Central crown.

"We're still focused on the opportunity to win the division," manager Clint Hurdle told the team's official website. "If it turns out (winning the Central no longer is possible), we want to fight and take that (wild card) game back home."

                  Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

The Braves still have some work to do if they want to lock up home field advantage. But they are closing the season with a whimper. Prior to Thursday's game, the Braves were hitting .204 and are 9-12 in their last 21 ball games.

They temporarily remedied that slump with a 7-1 victory over the Phils Thursday.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

Heading into the weekend, the Cards' magic number to clinch the Central is one. They'll look to celebrate in front of the home crowd with the rival Cubbies in town.

                  Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks

The Nats were a little too late to the party as they played quite well down the stretch but fell short.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have been in cruise control for some time and are 5-5 in their last 10 prior to Thursday's tilt with the Giants.

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants

These teams are relatively close in the win column and could use this series to finish ahead of the other.

                  Detroit Tigers at Miami Marlins

The Tigers clinched the AL Central and will mix in some rest for players to prepare for the playoffs.
