    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way.

    2) Giants-- 399
    3) Packers- 355
    4) Rams-- 244
    5) Falcons-- 220
    6) Steelers-- 205

    Least popular (7-4-1)

    T29) 49ers-- 70

    26) Patriots-- 88

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) Florida 31, Tennessee 17-- Gators beat Tennessee for ninth year in a row, but lost QB Driskel (ankle) for the year. Vols started Peterman at QB for the first time; I'm thinking you're better off giving a kid his first start in front of the home folks, but thats just my opinion.

    12) 39,425 happy people saw the Pirates beat Cincinnati and take a big step towards clinching their first playoff spot in 21 years. Magic number is now 3 for the Pirates to clinch a postseason berth.

    11) Pitt 58, Duke 55-- Tom Savage is first ACC QB in 14 years to throw six TDs in a game, as Panthers used four INTs to get their first ACC road win. 22,714 loyalists watched this game in Durham; when was last time Pitt and the Pirates played on same day, and Pirates' crowd was 16,711 higher?

    10) Florida A&M got a check for $900,000 to go to Ohio State and get beat by the Buckeyes; I understand they need the money for their program, but good grief, 76-0 leaves scars. Hope they spend the money wisely.

    9) On June 28 the Tigers were 43-35 and Victor Martinez was hitting .225; now they're 91-64 and he's hitting .303. Tremendous second half for the veteran hitter, who missed last year with a severe knee injury.

By the way, if you took Chris Sale (+$128) against the Tigers Saturday, you are not happy today. White Sox led 6-0 in 9th inning, blew the lead, then lost 7-6 in 12 innings. Not many teams blow a 6-0 lead in the ninth inning.

    8) Michigan 24, UConn 21-- Huskies scored a defensive TD, led 21-7 with 13:39 left in third quarter, but didn't score again. Second week in row Brady Hoke's team snuck past an inferior opponent; you play too many games like this, eventually you lose a game you shouldn't.

Its what Pat Riley calls "tempting the cruel hand of fate"; if you leave things up to one or two unusual events happening, sometimes they do.

    7) Virginia Tech 29, Marshall 21, OT-- Thundering Herd had a 39-yard FG blocked in OT that would've won the game. Tech's first TD scored after they blocked a punt, but Hokies converted just 2-16 on third down.

    6) Notre Dame 17, Michigan State 13-- Spartans scored one TD in four trips to the red zone, which hurt them as much as the refs bailing the Irish out at several turns with four pass interference penalties.

Seriously, the Pitt game last year, when a PI call kept the game alive, the end of the Stanford game when the Cardinal RB scored a TD but it was ruled a fumble, and the bogus penalty at Oklahoma LY that nullified a TD- they get a lot of marginal calls their way. Why is that?

    5) USC 17, Utah State 14-- Think SC alumni are happy after a 17-14 win over the gritty Aggies, especially after a 10-7 loss to Wazzu? Nah, me either, but this was a decent win. Utah State has a terrific QB and has become one of the teams BCS powers don't want to play.

    4) Oregon State 34, San Diego State 30-- Aztecs led 30-21 with 3:00 left, but OSU scored two TDs in 0:09, the second on a pick-6 with 2:31 left, to give former Charger coach Mike Riley an unlikely win in his return to San Diego. Why the hell was San Diego State throwing the ball on first down with 2:31 left in a 30-28 game? Difficult loss for the Aztecs.

    3) Rutgers 28, Arkansas 24-- Razorbacks had the ball and a 24-7 lead with 3:00 left in third quarter, but lost to Scarlet Knights for second year in a row. If you can't close vs Rutgers, how are the Hogs going to do in the SEC West? Bielema will find there are no Indianas in the SEC West.

    2) I saw the second half of the documentary on Lawrence Taylor; good stuff, very well done and fair. Have to check out the rest of it soon; one thing I hope after watching the show-- I just hope he can stay out of the limelight and live a somewhat normal, under-the-radar life.

    1) Saturday was a dreadful day for college football; seriously, what did the TV people think when they put this week's schedule together? Michigan at UConn was a primetime game? This ain't basketball. Maybe Utah-BYU is deserving of more national attention, but this was a lackluster day at best.

Lions at Roughriders: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-5.5, 53)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are facing their biggest adversity of the season after dropping consecutive games for the first time and losing league-leading running back Kory Sheets to a sprained knee. The Roughriders will try to maintain their position in the West Division when they host the BC Lions on Sunday. Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant, who threw for 369 yards last week but was also intercepted three times, will be looked upon to carry the offense in Sheets’ absence.

The Lions could tie second-place Saskatchewan in the standings with a victory, but will be without starting quarterback Travis Lulay (arm injury). Lulay will miss at least two games, leaving the starting spot open for backup Thomas DeMarco or recently acquired veteran pivot Buck Pierce. Without Lulay, BC running back Andrew Harris will likely play a bigger role in the offense after having his carries limited recently by minor injuries.

      TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE LIONS (7-4): DeMarco has completed 6-of-11 passes for 57 yards and one touchdown in spot duty this season, while also running for a touchdown. Wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux (649) and slotbacks Nick Moore (642) and Courtney Taylor (572) have caught over 500 receiving yards. Kick returner Tim Brown is second in the league with 1,361 combined return yards and has provided BC with good field position all season - a role that becomes ever more vital in Lulay’s absence.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (8-3): Slotback Geroy Simon will face his old team for the first time on Sunday. Simon recorded 14,756 of his record 16,128 career receiving yards with BC and is five catches away from tying Ben Cahoon for the CFL all-time reception record. Slotback Weston Dressler - Saskatchewan’s third-leading receiver - missed last week’s game but should return to the lineup on Sunday. Linebacker Renauld Williams, who will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, was missed last week by the Roughriders, who allowed a season-high 31 points at home.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.
      * Lions are 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings.
      * Roughriders are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
      * Under is 4-0 in Lions last four games in Week 13.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Saskatchewan S Tyron Brackenridge was fined an undisclosed amount by the league for a dangerous hit to the head of Toronto RB Chad Kackert in last week’s game.

      2. Pierce began his CFL career with the Lions, starting 34 games over five seasons.

      3. The Roughriders are 4-1 at home. BC is 1-4 on the road.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Brewers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday Night Baseball takes us to the NL Central where the Brewers are hosting the surging Cardinals.

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (+137, 8.5)

KELLY KEEPS IT GOING FOR ST. LOUIS

Joe Kelly is 9-4 with a 2.74 ERA for St. Louis this season. Kelly has been dealing with a strained calf and he is questionable for this start. The righty has allowed one earned run or less in five of his last seven starts. The Cardinals’ starter does not go deep into games as he has not pitched more than six innings in his last ten outings. Kelly just saw the Brewers at home on September 12th in a game he lost 5-3. He allowed four runs and seven hits in just five innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

                      WILD WILY PERALTA

Wily Peralta is 10-15 with a 4.34 ERA for Milwaukee. He has been a roller coaster of a starter this season. Peralta has allowed three runs or more in four of his last six starts. The Brewers’ pitcher lost to the Cardinals back on September 10th after giving up three runs and two hits in just over six innings. He faced St. Louis twice in May and gave up 13 runs and 22 hits in those two games. He has electric stuff striking out six or more in four straight games, but he is also prone to bouts of wildness.

                      INJURY REPORT

St. Louis has a few key players on the injured list. Allen Craig has a sprained left foot and he is out indefinitely. Jaime Garcia, Chris Carpenter, and Jason Motte are all done for the season due to shoulder and elbow ailments. Rafael Furcal is done for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Milwaukee’s biggest absence isn’t an injury, but a suspension as Ryan Braun is suspended for 65 games for his involvement in the Biogenesis clinic. The Brewers are also without Rickie Weeks (hamstring) and Corey Hart (knee).

                      TRENDS

Cardinals are 9-1 in Kelly’s last 10 starts
Cardinals are 5-2 Over in their last 7 Sunday games

Brewers are 2-5 in Peralta’s last 7 starts
Brewers are 7-1 Under in Peralta’s last 8 Sunday starts

                      HITTERS TO WATCH

                      Matt Carpenter 4-for-8 vs. Peralta
                      Jon Jay 3-for-9 vs. Peralta

                      Norichika Aoki 5-for-11 vs. Kelly
                      Aramis Ramirez 2-for-10 vs. Kelly
