    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Most popular, least popular picks in the LVH Super Contest, where 1,034 contestants pick five games each week of the NFL season........they paid $1,500 each to be in this contest, by the way. (Thursday's teams were the two least popular selections.......)

    Most popular (0-5-1 vs spread)

    1) Saints-- 361
    2) Giants-- 343
    3) Ravens-- 259
    4) Colts-- 244
    5) Chiefs-- 223
    6) 49ers-- 221

    Least popular (4-1-1)

    30) Browns-- 85
    29) Packers-- 89
    28) Texans-- 93
    27) Chargers-- 103
    26) Jaguars-- 124
    25) Titans-- 126

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) Bizarre happenings after midnight, where Arizona State won 32-30 over Wisconsin when the Badgers tried to put the ball in the center of field for a last-second FG, but ran out of time because the refs didn't call an ASU player for laying on the ball and delaying the game. I'm not giving this play its due for how truly weird it was-- just watch SportsCenter.

Now Wisconsin could have kicked a 31-yard FG at an angle without trying to center the ball, but they got cute, probably confused the refs and they lose an odd, interesting game they probably should've won.

    12) Oregon State 51, Utah 48 OT-- Not often you get outrushed 260-48 and win, but the Beavers did, despite blowing a ten-point 4th quarter lead. OSU's Mannion was 27-44/443 throwing the ball.

The son of former Atlanta Brave great Dale Murphy plays TE for Utah; he caught a couple passes for 31 yards in this game.

    11) Alabama 49, Texas A&M 42-- Down 14-0 on road, Crimson Tide rallied to win, despite giving up 628 yards. In a game with 137 plays, only 14 of them came on third down-- was it great offfense or lousy defense? Manziel will be a better pro than McCarron, but what a leader McCarron is.

    10) Ole Miss 44, Texas 23-- Mack Brown fired his defensive coordinator last week; does he fire the special teams coach next, after Rebels ran a punt back for a TD? Mack is as good as gone, let the speculation begin on who his replacement will be. By the way, Ole Miss ran for 272 yards, so it couldn't have been all Manny Diaz' fault, since he wasn't there.

    9) Why some teams win and some teams don't; this is from the second round of the 2007 baseball draft.....
77th pick-- Mets-- Scott Moviel, P listed at 6-11, 245
    78th pick-- Atlanta-- Freddie Freeman

Moviel went 22-32 in five minor league seasons, never getting higher than Class A ball. He last pitched in 2011. Oy.

This is from the first round of the 2011 draft........
13th pick-- Mets-- Brandon Nimmo, HS OF from Wyoming
    14th pick-- Miami-- Jose Fernandez

Nimmo hit .273 with two homers this season, in his second full year of Class A ball- his team did win the SAL title, so there's that, but Fernandez might be Rookie of the Year (12-6, 2.19) this season. In the big leagues.

    8) Michigan 28, Akron 24-- Last week the Zips beat I-AA James Madison 35-33, and were outgained by 142 yards. This week, Akron had ball inside the Michigan 5-yard line in the last 0:10 but was stopped; total yardage in this game was 425-418. Did I mention Akron hasn't won a road game in almost five years? Wolverine QB Gardner threw a pick-6 for second week in a row.

    7) UCLA 41, Nebraska 21-- Bruins beat Huskers for second year in a row, as Jim Mora seems to be the right guy in Westwood. As for Nebraska, lose the black jerseys. Just wear red. Bruins averaged 11.4 yards/pass attempt, two weeks after the Wyoming Cowboys scored 34 on Nebraska.

    6) Auburn 24, Mississippi State 20-- Better team lost this game; Mullen has a gem in soph QB Prescott, who threw for 213 yards, ran for 133 more in his first college road start. He wears #15 for a reason; Mullen was at Florida for part of the Tebow Era. Auburn QB Marshall passed for 339 yards and led the game-winning drive, but he isn't nearly as good as Prescott.

    5) Central Florida 34, Penn State 31-- Remember the name Blake Bortles; he was 20-27/288 passing and is one of the better QBs in the country. UCF hung 507 yards on Penn State; their OC is Charlie Taaffe, from Albany-- he used to be a head coach in the CFL

    4) Maryland 32, UConn 21-- Randy Edsall won in his return to the Nutmeg State; his Terps outrushed UConn 224-34. Still hard to believe Maryland is going to the Big Dozen next year, but they are.

    3) Oklahoma 51, Tulsa 20-- Blake Bell finally got to start a game at QB for the Sooners and was 27-37/413 passing; he is supposed to be just a runner, so we'll see as Oklahoma's competition gets stiffer.

    2) Bartolo Colon threw eight shutout innings as the A's won in Texas for the second day in a row and moved to 5.5 games ahead in the AL West race; Rays won in Minnesota and tied Texas atop the Wild Card standings. .

    1) Yu Darvish of the Rangers is the first pitcher in 24 years (Hershiser, '89) to lose four or more 1-0 games in the same season.

Alouettes at Lions: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at BC Lions (-9, 52)

The last time the Montreal Alouettes played the BC Lions, quarterback Tanner Marsh thrust himself into the spotlight by engineering a massive comeback. On Sunday, Marsh and Montreal will visit the Lions for a rematch of that Week 9 miracle. Marsh faltered against the Toronto Argonauts last week and has already thrown eight interceptions in his first 89 pass attempts, but he won his first two games under center and has a knack for making big completions at key moments of a game.

It seems the Lions are only comfortable at home, as they are a perfect 5-0 at BC Place but 1-4 on the road. The biggest difference between BC’s play on the road and at home is its defense - the Lions allow an average of 21 points in British Columbia, but that number balloons to 32.2 outside the province. BC quarterback Travis Lulay suggested he's finally rounded into form by posting his first two 300-yard passing games of 2013 in a home-and-home set against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

      TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (4-6): Running back Brandon Whitaker was placed on the nine-game injured list on Monday, effectively shutting him down for the season. Without Whitaker, the Alouettes will use backup Jerome Messam and Marsh as a running tandem. Wide receiver Duron Carter has been a favorite target of Marsh for big plays over the last three games, totaling 210 yards on just eight receptions for a league-leading average of 26.3 yards per catch.

ABOUT THE LIONS (6-4): Veteran quarterback Buck Pierce was acquired in a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after last week’s games. Pierce, who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Lions, will back up Lulay and provide depth and veteran guidance in the lineup. Offensive lineman Ben Archibald told CFL.ca he feels the line has underachieved in its duty to protect Lulay. Running back Andrew Harris is getting fewer carries in recent games, partially due to his increased role as an extra pass-rush blocker.

      TRENDS:

      * Alouettes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.
      * Lions are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
      * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
      * Alouettes are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings in BC.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. CB Cord Parks is tied for the league lead with three interceptions, while the Lions are even with the Saskatchewan Roughriders with 12. The Alouettes have 10 picks.

      2. Montreal LB Chip Cox leads the league in tackles with 73.

      3. The Lions have won their last 11 regular-season home games.
