    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

NFL trends for Sunday's Week 1 action.....

-- Bills are 4-9 vs spread in last thirteen divisional games.

-- Saints covered five of their last six home games.

-- Packers covered 11 of last 15 games as the underdog.

-- Seattle covered once in last five games as a road favorite.

-- Lions are 1-8-1 vs spread in last ten divisional games.

-- Jets are 4-10-1 in last fifteen games as an underdog.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.......

    13) High school/college coaches all over America will be showing Denver LB Danny Trevathan picking off Joe Flacco Thursday, then dropping the ball in gleeful celebration as he ran around the end zone, celebrating his defensive touchdown.

Problem is, he dropped the ball when he was on the 2-yard line, so there was no touchdown, and one of his teammates got hurt in the scramble for the loose ball. Not good.

Its not often you see a coach openly berate a player on the sideline, but Denver DC Jack Del Rio did this time, and it was deserved.

    12) Pirate catcher Russell Martin is making $7.5M this year, $9.5 next year; I’m thinking there’s $17M the Bronx Bombers wish they had spent last winter. No offense, but how do you have a $190M+ payroll and have Chris Stewart as your catcher?

    11) Houston Astros have upgraded their team a lot during this season, as prospects drift up thru their farm system, but they’ve still been outscored 106-38 in the 8th inning this season.

    10) Before Peyton Manning did it Thursday night, Minnesota’s Joe Kapp was last NFL QB to throw seven TDs in one game and that was way back in 1969.

    9) Basketball coach at Skyline HS in Dallas was fired, because he didn’t play the principal’s son enough, and apparently this is an e-mail/text trail that backs up the fired coach’s claim. Not good, I mean principals make six figures and you’re going to risk your job because you think your kid should be playing more minutes? Brilliant!!!

    8) It took Denver TE Julius Thomas until 10:30, about 90 minutes after kickoff, to get picked up in our fantasy league. Tom Brady couldn’t have been very happy watching Wes Welker run amok Thursday night.

    7) Washngton Wizards’ F Jan Vesely has had a busy summer; I saw him play well in the Las Vegas Summer League and now he is playing for the Czech team in the Eurobasket event. Dangerous for guys to play ball year-round. At some point, your body is going to break down.

    6) “It is what it is” and “It is a process.” If you hear either of these two answers, you know the person saying it didn’t want to answer whatever the question was.

    5) HS forward Jaylen Johnson committed to Louisville Friday morning, as Rick Pitino begins his Hall of Fame induction weekend. Not a bad trio of college coaches getting inducted: Pitino, Jerry Tarkanian and Guy Lewis. Lot of wins there.

    4) In case you care about such things, over the last eight years, teams that lost the NFL’s mid-week season opener are 3-5 in Week 2, 2-6 vs spread (2-5 as favorites). Ravens will be favored at home next week.

    3) Over last decade, teams that win the mid-week season opener are 2-8 vs spread in Week 2 and were favored in all ten games. Denver’s visit to the Swamp next week should be close to a pick ‘em.

    2) Broncos-Giants in Week 2 is probably the last Manning Bowl, but it isn’t a primetime game. Surprising. CBS must’ve lobbied hard to make that their first 4:30 doubleheader game of the season.

    1) NHL season starts in 24 days? Seems like the Stanley Cup playoffs ended about two weeks ago. Remember now, we have trend information on the NHL/NBA and college basketball every day, all season long.

Richmond preview: Who'll make the Chase and who won't

Few moments in American motorsports are more charged with high-rpm intensity than the instant on pit road at Richmond International Speedway just before the Sprint Cup drivers slide into their cockpits and fire up their engines for the final race of the regular season. As the drivers on the playoff bubble stand next to their cars in the Virginia twilight, with the track lights on and the stands humming with anticipation, they'll eye other warily, as if they're all wondering just how far each of them will push their cars -- and what chances they'll take -- to make the Chase. For these drivers, a season's worth of work is distilled into three hours of short-track, fender-to-fender racing -- three hours that, in some cases, will define careers.

With 25 regular season races complete, seven drivers have locked in a spot in the playoffs: Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne. So as the circuit roars through Richmond on Saturday night, five Chase spots remain to be filled in this finale. Ten drivers are mathematically still alive, but Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard are such long shots that we won't include them in our breakdown of the drivers vying to earn a place in the 2013 Chase. But, as Brad Keselowski proved last season, anything can happen in the NASCAR playoffs; underdogs can slay giants.

So here's who will -- and who won't -- advance to the Chase among the final eight still in legitimate playoff contention.

      1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (seventh in points)

Of the drivers who have yet to lock up a spot in the playoffs, Earnhardt has the easiest job on Saturday night: He simply needs to finish 32nd or better and he's in. Considering that Richmond is, statistically, his third-best track on the schedule -- his career average finish on the .75-mile oval is 13.8; he's better only at Bristol (11.5) and Martinsville (13.4) -- he should cruise into his third straight Chase with relative ease.

      Bottom line: Earnhardt is in.

      2. Joey Logano (eighth)

If Logano finishes 11th or better, he'll qualify for his first Chase. But even if he falters on Saturday night and drops out of the top 10 in the points standings, he's still a solid bet to advance. He has one victory, which means he'd probably have to get leapfrogged in the standings by Martin Truex Jr., who also has one and who currently trails Logano by 25 points, which roughly translates to 25 positions on the track.

And remember: Over the last six races, no driver has scored more points than Logano, who came in second last Sunday in Atlanta. Logano, who finished third at Richmond in the spring, is peaking at the perfect time.

      Bottom line: Logano is in.

      3. Greg Biffle (ninth)

Biffle needs to finish ninth or better to guarantee a berth. This could be tall order for him: In his last 13 starts at Richmond, he has only one top-10.

It says here that Biffle will struggle on Saturday night, but that doesn't mean his playoff hopes will be dashed. If he falls out of the top 10, he merely needs to out-point Truex (most likely) to secure a wild card. The Biff is currently 23 points ahead of him.

Bottom line: Biffle is in -- as a wildcard.

      4. Kurt Busch (10th)

No driver from a single-car team has ever made it into the Chase, but Busch is in prime position. Driving for Furniture Row Racing, he can automatically clinch a berth by finishing second and leading one lap. If he doesn't do that, he probably needs to beat Biffle by at least 10 positions. I think Busch, who led 36 laps at Richmond in the spring and finished ninth, will accomplish that on Saturday night.

      Bottom line: Busch is in.

      5. Jeff Gordon (11th)

Gordon controls his own destiny -- barely. He'll clinch a wild card berth if he reaches Victory Lane.

The bad news: He hasn't done that since the 2012 season finale in Homestead, which means he's currently on a 25-race winless streak. The good news: He finished second in this event last year and third in 2012. Gordon, the 42-year-old four-time champ, is my pick to take the checkers on Saturday night.

Bottom line: Gordon, in a mild upset, is in.

      6. Martin Truex Jr. (13th)

The schedule doesn't favor him. If Truex wins, he'll at least secure a wild card spot, but Richmond isn't one of his stronger tracks. In his last six starts at RIR, he has finished no higher than 17th.

The most likely scenario for Truex qualifying for his second Chase would be to finish in the top-five and have Gordon and Busch struggle mightily, but that seems highly unlikely.

      Bottom line: Truex is out.

      7. Ryan Newman (14th)

Newman is 20 points out of 10th place, but he still can power his way into the playoffs with a victory. Could he pull it off? He does have one career win at Richmond, but that was back in 2003. He finished 15th at RIR in the spring.

      Bottom line: Newman is out.

      8. Brad Keselowski (15th)

These are desperate times for the defending Sprint Cup champion. After finishing 35th at Atlanta last Sunday evening, Keselowski fell from 11th to 15th in the standings. Now it would require a bigger upset than the one he pulled off over Jimmie Johnson in last year's Chase for Keselowski to make the 2013 playoffs.

Winless this season, he is 28 points out of 10th place. Basically, Keselowski must take the checkered flag -- something he's never done in eight-career starts at Richmond -- and then hope that both Truex and Newman sputter to back-of-the-field finishes. Could this happen? Of course. Will this happen? Of course not.

      Bottom line: Keselowski is out.

Lions at Tiger-Cats: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        BC Lions at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 54)

The BC Lions stayed perfect at home when they defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week. On Saturday, the Lions will try for a rare road win when they visit the Tiger-Cats in Guelph, Ont. BC quarterback Travis Lulay carried the offense against Hamilton with his first 300-yard passing game since 2012 and will need to continue that production until running back Andrew Harris - limited to 113 rushing yards over the last three games - can regain his early season form.

Hamilton continued its recent strong run of play in Friday’s 29-26 defeat as quarterback Henry Burris added to his league-leading passing yards total by tossing for another 352. The Tiger-Cats’ biggest issue was their slow start as they failed to record a first down until the second quarter. Hamilton has looked even better at home, including a 37-14 rout of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 9, as it grows more comfortable playing at Alumni Stadium.

        TV: 4 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE LIONS (6-3): Harris is fourth in the league with 572 rushing yards. Linebacker Adam Bighill leads the defense with 43 tackles despite missing time with a sprained ankle. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian has 42 tackles to go with two interceptions, while Bighill also has three sacks to lead a strong BC defense. Defensive ends Khreem Smith and Brandon Jordan each have four sacks. Lulay’s favorite target is wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, who has caught 30 passes for a team-leading 614 yards and four touchdowns.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (4-5): Burris has thrown for 632 yards to wide receiver Greg Ellingson, 583 to Bakari Grant and 394 to Samuel Giguere. Andy Fantuz, who missed significant time due to injury, has 320 receiving yards. Running back C.J Gable has 306 yards on the season after battling injuries early on. Hamilton’s defense is led by defensive lineman Brandon Boudreaux, who has four sacks. The Tiger-Cats have made only four interceptions, but their run defense has improved - they have not surrendered more than 100 rushing yards in a game since a Week 5 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders

        TRENDS:

        * Lions are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games.
        * Tiger-Cats are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games.
        * Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Hamilton.
        * Lions are 1-6 ATS in their last seven meetings.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Hamilton is 1-4 against West Division opponents. The Lions are 1-3 on the road.

        2. Lions veteran K Paul McCallum completed a pass for 12 yards on a fake punt in Week 9.

        3. The Tiger-Cats will wear uniforms commemorating the Hamilton Flying Wildcats, a football team formed in 1941. The Flying Wildcats won the Grey Cup in 1943 and merged with the defunct Hamilton Tigers in 1950 to form the Tiger-Cats.
