    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Everything is relative; when you look at BYU-Virginia stats from Cavs' 19-16 win last week, keep in mind the game was played in a monsoon.

-- Guard Michael Dixon is eligible for Memphis' basketball team, excellent news for Josh Pastner and the Tigers.

-- 29 of 53 players on Rams' roster are in their 1st or 2nd season.

-- CEO of McDonald's made $13.8M last year. Talk about golden arches; $13.8M buys a lot of Happy Meals.

-- Giants are 0-11 in Barry Zito's road starts this year. 0 and 11.

-- Red Sox were shut out five times in John Lackey's last eleven starts.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.........

    13) NFL opened last night; there are 13 games Sunday, two on Monday. How will the rookie QBs (Manuel/Smith) do and Terrelle Pryor, who might as well be a rookie- how will he fare at Indy?

    12) Georgia is -3 against South Carolina, after Dawgs laid an egg at Clemson, botching a tying 25-yard FG on a bad snap. Gamecocks smothered North Carolina in their opener, but this is the SEC opener and this is a big game

    11) Cleveland Browns are 1-13 in season openers, but are pick ‘em Sunday at home against the Dolphins, in Chudzinski’s debut as Browns’ HC. Curious to see Brandon Weeden playing under Norv Turner’s tutelage.

    10) Florida-Miami will be a noontime steambath Saturday; Gators struggled to 24-6 win over Toledo Saturday. Miami is on the way back; this will be a good yardstick for them.

    9) Will Jay Cutler play better after the Bears fired the generally-successful Lovie Smith to bring in a QB guru as head coach? Smith is only the 4th NFL coach since 1990 to get canned after winning 10+ games; Cutler’s play better improve a lot.

    8) Tom Brady is 36 and is without his top five pass catchers from LY; interested to see how they fare at a Buffalo team with a new coach, rookie QB and very low expectations.

    7) LY, Oklahoma beat West Virginia 50-49, when the Mountaineers lost despite gaining 778 yards in a amazingly weird game. WVU is rebuilding on offense—they struggled with William & Mary last week, so this could be a long day for them.

    6) Sean Payton is back on the sideline after getting suspended LY for things one of his assistants did; expect the New Orleans offense to bounce back to its 2010-11 levels.

    5) San Diego State, South Florida both lost by 20+ points last week to I-AA teams, now Aztecs go to Ohio State, and USF goes to Michigan State. Good luck, fellas.

    4) Underdogs covered 11 of last 14 Notre Dame-Michigan games, with dogs winning ten of those games SU. Last Irish visit to Ann Arbor for while, since ND ended this rivalry.

    3) Mike Leach’s Coogs are better than they’ve been in while, but are they good enough to challenge a USC team that still hasn’t really decided on which QB it wants to play. Wazzu had a shot at beating Auburn last week—I’m looking forward to this game.

    2) 73-year old Monte Kiffin is the new DC in Dallas, after his son fired him at USC. (Really, he did) Cowboys should be better on defense, but they’ve lost at home to the Giants four years in a row. As much as the networks put Dallas on in primetime, it would be nice if they played like they deserved the attention.

    1) Packers lost twice to San Francisco LY, including a playoff game in Candlestick. Tough opener here; 49ers had some injuries in the offseason. Good 4:25 game for FOX, for those of you won’t be watching my Rams play Arizona.

        CFL
        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Week 11

Calgary (7-2) @ Edmonton (1-8)—Stampeders (-7.5) almost let big lead slip away last week before beating Eskimos 37-34 at home, fifth series win in row for Stamps, with four of those five by three or less points (four of those five went over total). Calgary is 3-1 in last four visits here, winning by 10-2-3 points; they’re 3-2 on road this year, losing only in Regina/Vancouver- their road wins are by 8-13-21 points (1-0 as road favorite). Eskimos lost last seven games, losing last four by three or less points (covered last three); they’re 0-4 at home (1-2 as home dogs) losing by 21-14-1-3 points. Calgary picked off seven passes in last three games, is +8 in turnovers last five games. Eight of nine Edmonton games, six of nine Calgary games this season went over the total.

BC Lions (6-3) @ Hamilton (4-5)-- Lions (-6.5) survived 29-26 shootout with TiCats last week at home, snapping Hamilton’s three-game win streak; both teams had 350+ passing yards. BC won last three series games by 3-20-3 points; they’re 4-2 in last six visits here, with four of last five series games played here staying under the total. TiCats are 3-1 vs eastern teams, 1-4 vs west, with only win 30-29 over 1-9 Edmonton; TiCats are 2-2 at home, with both wins over lowly Winnipeg. Lions are 1-3 on road, giving up 44-38-39 points; they’re 6-0 when allowing less than 38 points- their only road win was 17-3 at Edmonton. BC turned ball over 17 times (-11) in last five games and still went 3-2 in those games. Four of last six BC games, three of last four Hamilton games went over the total.

Toronto (5-4) @ Montreal (4-5)—Short week for these rivals after Alouettes (+5.5) upset Toronto 20-9 in Rogers Centre Tuesday, outrushing them 144-58; these teams are meeting for third time in five weeks. Als have won consecutive games for first time this year, are 2-3 at home, winning by 1-5 points. After averaging 15 second half points a game in first seven games, Argos have been outscored 17-1 in second half of last two games, both home losses with backup QB Collaros under center. Montreal is +8 in turnovers for season despite a -6 in 38-13 (+2) home loss to Argos here four weeks ago. Five of last seven Argo games, four of last six Montreal games went over the total. Alouettes put star QB Calvillo on 9-week injury list, so backup Marsh is the man for now. Toronto won three of last four visits here; five of last six series games stayed under total.

Saskatchewan (8-1) @ Winnipeg (1-8)—Roughriders won last three games by 3-3-23 points, routing Bombers 48-25 (-14.5) last week, forcing three turnovers and outgaining Winnipeg 441-293. Riders are 5-2 vs spread as favorites this year, 2-1 as road favorites, winning away games by 21-11-12-3 points, with 42-27 loss at Calgary. Stampeders at Eskimos: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos (+3, 56.5)

Four days after they played a wild Labour Day Classic in Calgary, the Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos will square off again on Friday, this time in Edmonton. The Eskimos staged a dramatic comeback attempt in the fourth quarter Monday, but once again fell short as Calgary won its sixth straight meeting between the provincial rivals. Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly threw four touchdown passes in just over six minutes during the rally - the kind of production the Eskimos need in the first quarter, when they have not scored a touchdown since Week 2.

Bo Levi Mitchell took over at quarterback after Kevin Glenn left with an injury in the second quarter and Mitchell - who began the year as Calgary’s third-string option - did not disappoint, throwing two touchdowns and running for another. The Stampeders continue to find success on offence despite missing starting quarterback Drew Tate and leading receiver Nik Lewis and playing with a banged-up Jon Cornish, who is still the second-leading running back in the league despite recording only 60 yards on Monday after missing a game.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (7-2, 6-3 ATS): Defensive linemen Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law ran roughshod over Edmonton’s offensive line Monday, combining for five sacks. Wide receiver Maurice Price was the latest member of Calgary’s receiving corps to fill the role of Lewis, catching three touchdown passes as part of a massive 165-yard game. Slotback Marquay McDaniel was the leading receiver two weeks ago, while wide receiver Brad Sinopoli and slotback Jabari Arthur have both proven to be capable and reliable. The biggest danger for the Stampeders appears to be complacency - their relaxed play in the fourth quarter keyed the Eskimos’ comeback.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-8, 4-5 ATS): Edmonton general manager Ed Hervey has instructed his coaching staff to indefinitely bench offensive lineman Simeon Rottier after Calgary sacked Reilly seven times, telling reporters “it wouldn’t bother me if [Rottier] didn’t play another down this year.” Thanks to his fantastic fourth quarter, Reilly threw for 246 yards Monday, bringing his season total to 2,277 - second in the league behind Hamilton's Henry Burris. Slotback Fred Stamps and wide receivers Cary Koch and Nate Coehoorn account for nearly 75 percent of that total. The Eskimos played Monday’s game without running back Hugh Charles (hamstring) or defensive end and team sack leader Odell Willis (shoulder), who are questionable for Friday.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                      * Stampeders are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings in Edmonton.
                      * Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Edmonton.

                      EXTRA POINTS:

                      1. Edmonton is 0-4 at home and 0-5 against West Division opponents.

                      2. Calgary K Rene Paredes leads the league with 106 points.

                      3. The Eskimos have lost their last five games by a combined 15 points and have scored 105 of their 150 points during that span in the second half.

Richmond preview: Who'll make the Chase and who won't

Few moments in American motorsports are more charged with high-rpm intensity than the instant on pit road at Richmond International Speedway just before the Sprint Cup drivers slide into their cockpits and fire up their engines for the final race of the regular season. As the drivers on the playoff bubble stand next to their cars in the Virginia twilight, with the track lights on and the stands humming with anticipation, they'll eye other warily, as if they're all wondering just how far each of them will push their cars -- and what chances they'll take -- to make the Chase. For these drivers, a season's worth of work is distilled into three hours of short-track, fender-to-fender racing -- three hours that, in some cases, will define careers.

With 25 regular season races complete, seven drivers have locked in a spot in the playoffs: Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne. So as the circuit roars through Richmond on Saturday night, five Chase spots remain to be filled in this finale. Ten drivers are mathematically still alive, but Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard are such long shots that we won't include them in our breakdown of the drivers vying to earn a place in the 2013 Chase. But, as Brad Keselowski proved last season, anything can happen in the NASCAR playoffs; underdogs can slay giants.

So here's who will -- and who won't -- advance to the Chase among the final eight still in legitimate playoff contention.

                        1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (seventh in points)

Of the drivers who have yet to lock up a spot in the playoffs, Earnhardt has the easiest job on Saturday night: He simply needs to finish 32nd or better and he's in. Considering that Richmond is, statistically, his third-best track on the schedule -- his career average finish on the .75-mile oval is 13.8; he's better only at Bristol (11.5) and Martinsville (13.4) -- he should cruise into his third straight Chase with relative ease.

                        Bottom line: Earnhardt is in.

                        2. Joey Logano (eighth)

If Logano finishes 11th or better, he'll qualify for his first Chase. But even if he falters on Saturday night and drops out of the top 10 in the points standings, he's still a solid bet to advance. He has one victory, which means he'd probably have to get leapfrogged in the standings by Martin Truex Jr., who also has one and who currently trails Logano by 25 points, which roughly translates to 25 positions on the track.

And remember: Over the last six races, no driver has scored more points than Logano, who came in second last Sunday in Atlanta. Logano, who finished third at Richmond in the spring, is peaking at the perfect time.

                        Bottom line: Logano is in.

                        3. Greg Biffle (ninth)

Biffle needs to finish ninth or better to guarantee a berth. This could be tall order for him: In his last 13 starts at Richmond, he has only one top-10.

It says here that Biffle will struggle on Saturday night, but that doesn't mean his playoff hopes will be dashed. If he falls out of the top 10, he merely needs to out-point Truex (most likely) to secure a wild card. The Biff is currently 23 points ahead of him.

Bottom line: Biffle is in -- as a wildcard.

                        4. Kurt Busch (10th)

No driver from a single-car team has ever made it into the Chase, but Busch is in prime position. Driving for Furniture Row Racing, he can automatically clinch a berth by finishing second and leading one lap. If he doesn't do that, he probably needs to beat Biffle by at least 10 positions. I think Busch, who led 36 laps at Richmond in the spring and finished ninth, will accomplish that on Saturday night.

                        Bottom line: Busch is in.

                        5. Jeff Gordon (11th)

Gordon controls his own destiny -- barely. He'll clinch a wild card berth if he reaches Victory Lane.

The bad news: He hasn't done that since the 2012 season finale in Homestead, which means he's currently on a 25-race winless streak. The good news: He finished second in this event last year and third in 2012. Gordon, the 42-year-old four-time champ, is my pick to take the checkers on Saturday night.

Bottom line: Gordon, in a mild upset, is in.

                        6. Martin Truex Jr. (13th)

The schedule doesn't favor him. If Truex wins, he'll at least secure a wild card spot, but Richmond isn't one of his stronger tracks. In his last six starts at RIR, he has finished no higher than 17th.

The most likely scenario for Truex qualifying for his second Chase would be to finish in the top-five and have Gordon and Busch struggle mightily, but that seems highly unlikely.

                        Bottom line: Truex is out.

                        7. Ryan Newman (14th)

Newman is 20 points out of 10th place, but he still can power his way into the playoffs with a victory. Could he pull it off? He does have one career win at Richmond, but that was back in 2003. He finished 15th at RIR in the spring.

                        Bottom line: Newman is out.

                        8. Brad Keselowski (15th)

These are desperate times for the defending Sprint Cup champion. After finishing 35th at Atlanta last Sunday evening, Keselowski fell from 11th to 15th in the standings. Now it would require a bigger upset than the one he pulled off over Jimmie Johnson in last year's Chase for Keselowski to make the 2013 playoffs.

Winless this season, he is 28 points out of 10th place. Basically, Keselowski must take the checkered flag -- something he's never done in eight-career starts at Richmond -- and then hope that both Truex and Newman sputter to back-of-the-field finishes. Could this happen? Of course. Will this happen? Of course not.

                        Bottom line: Keselowski is out.
