  • College football line watch: Cal/Oregon total could soar

Each week during the college football season, renowned Las Vegas wiseguy and Covers Expert Bruce Marshall looks at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later, and which total to watch as the week plays out.

    Spread to bet now

Oklahoma Sooners at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+3.5)

Four straight non-covering efforts to begin the season have sent most of the usual Notre Dame backers at the Las Vegas sports books into temporary hiding somewhere near Lake Mead. Thus, not much initial reaction from Domer faithful when the Irish were posted as 3-point dogs for this week’s game at South Bend versus Oklahoma. In fact, more Sooner money showed up early and pushed the number up a tick to 3.5 by Monday afternoon.

Indeed, the many sharps around Vegas who bet against the Irish against Michigan State last week and pushed that number down to 4.5 or thereabouts from the original posting at 7 might be expected to again jump back in against the Domers later this week, and perhaps push the number even further in OU’s direction.

But we aren’t anticipating a repeat of the line movement from Notre Dame-Michigan State, and suspect that many OU-inclined (or anti-ND) sharps already did their business very early with this matchup.

Especially since the Sooner-Irish price quickly ticked above a key number (3) and taken some of the value away from OU backers.

Besides, a closer look at the Sooners hardly suggests go-with indicators from Bob Stoops’ troops, who have not really been tested thus far and were decidedly less than impressive in a 16-7 win over what looks like a very subpar West Virginia earlier in the month (we’re sure you noticed how awful the Mountaineers looked last Saturday against Maryland).

In fact, most Big 12 sources familiar with the OU situation believe the Sooners are still a bit of a mystery this season, with all of the tougher tests still to come.

True, big Blake Bell’s first start at QB vs. Tulsa was a doozy (four TD passes), but the rebuilt Golden Hurricane “D” looks very suspect. And Stoops has lost plenty of marquee games in recent years, including a year ago when stomped by the Irish in Norman.

Don’t forget that plenty of Notre Dame-centric money still exists in the marketplace.

With the price already having moved OU’s way for the Saturday game, we suggest that Domer-inclined backers grab the 3.5 while still available. We are not expecting another sharp line move against Notre Dame as a week ago, as oddsmakers have simply reacted a bit earlier to some of the current anti-Irish sentiment among the sharps.

    Spread to wait on

Stanford Cardinal at Washington State Cougars (+10.5) (at Seattle)

Early movement in this number suggests an appetite for the Cardinal, bet up from an original posting at 9.5 and quickly through a key number at 10.

Most Las Vegas outlets now show Stanford at -10.5 over Wazzu on Saturday at the Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field, where the Cougs like to play one game per year for their many alums in the Seattle area.

Stanford’s popularity is understandable, especially after last week’s impressive win over Arizona State in the Tree’s first real test of 2013. The wagering public will also begin to ****** some of the technical factors that support the Cardinal, such as its 12-2 spread mark as a visiting favorite since the 2010 season.

The fact that this price vs. Wazzu did not pause at the key number of 10, quickly bet to 10.5, suggests a further run-up in the Cardinal price is likely.

Despite some encouraging early efforts (including an upset win at Southern Cal) and spread covers in five-straight games dating to the end of last season, Mike Leach’s Cougs are still flying a bit under the radar.

The wagering masses will also realize this is not a “true” home game for Wazzu and thus unlikely to attach any sort of spread premium for the venue.

We think it’s unlikely that this price runs all of the way up to the next “key” number at 14, but we don’t anticipate the spread backsliding, either. And the easy way in which the line barged through the first key number at 10 suggests the number could rise a bit further as the week progresses. Especially since Stanford has graduated into the “public” category and can expect more support in the wagering marketplace.

Cougar backers can probably pick up a bit more value with this price if they wait until later in the week.

    Total to watch

California Golden Bears at Oregon Ducks (84)

Again, it’s “how high can they go” with Oregon, as this total for Saturday’s game against Cal has already ascended into the stratosphere.

Indeed, we watched in some degree of awe as the oddsmakers dared Duck “over” money to appear by first posting this total for the game against the Golden Bears at a robust 80.

Before we knew it, the total had ballooned to 83.

Apparently the linemakers slightly undershot a resistance point for totals involving Oregon, as even the astronomical 80 did not dissuade early over money.

With the poll-conscious Ducks scoring at a point-per-minute pace and new Cal HC Sonny Dykes unlikely to have his frosh QB Jared Goff take the foot off the gas pedal for the new uptempo Bear spread, we suspect a scoreline that might more look like a basketball matchup between Dana Altman’s Webfoots and Mike Montgomery’s Cal hoopsters.

Especially since Dykes’ fast-paced offense has already contributed to combined scorelines of 74 (vs. Northwestern) and 86 (vs. Ohio State).

We’re almost on a Guinness book record watch for highest-ever “total” in this matchup; could oddsmakers move this “total” into the high 80s? Or 90, maybe? We’ll be paying attention for what is likely to end up as the highest posted “total” of the season.

    • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that has proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Lookahead spot

There’s a mutiny brewing on the Buccaneers’ pirate ship. Players are feuding with the head coach, the franchise is trying to give the No. 1 QB the bum’s rush, and the offense ranks 31st in the NFL averaging 11.3 points a game.

All of that has led to a 0-3 start for Tampa Bay, which takes on the Arizona Cardinals as a 2.5-point home favorite Sunday – one week away from a much-needed bye in Week 5. Bettors should beware the Bucs, who will undoubtedly be looking past Arizona and to a week away from football and the drama of the locker room.

      Letdown spot

What better way to celebrate snapping a seven-game losing skid to your bitter rivals than a trip to Hawaii. The Fresno State Bulldogs, coming off a thrilling 41-40 victory over Boise State last Friday, are heading to paradise in Week 5, taking on the Warriors as 20-point suggested road favorites.

Playing in Hawaii is hard enough for visiting teams, with guys more concerned with soaking up the tropical surroundings than getting the job done on the field. Fresno State has been able to avoid that in the past, but never after a win as big as last week. A letdown looms on the islands.

      Schedule spot

The MLB schedule makers have all but gift wrapped an American League Wild Card spot for the Cleveland Indians. All the Tribe has to do it tie the bow on a successful turnaround season. Cleveland, which is a half game back on Tampa Bay and gripping to one of the AL’s two wild card tickets heading into Monday, is coming off a four-game sweep of the hapless Houston Astros.

The Indians close the year with two home games versus the Chicago White Sox and a four-game road trip to play the Minnesota Twins. Both of those AL Central rivals have checked out on the season and are a combined 8-24 against the Tribe this year. Chicago is a mere 2-15 versus Cleveland, allowing an ERA north of 6.00 in those contests. A motivated Indians club is primed to finish 2013 strong and roll into the postseason.

      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more intriguing college football matchups this weekend:

-- LSU-Georgia—Zach Mettenberger transferred from Georgia to LSU; his mother still works in the Georgia athletic department.

-- Ole Miss-Alabama—Inexperience on OL is going to catch up with Crimson Tide at some point.

-- USC-Arizona State—Who made the Sun Devils’ schedule? Wisconsin-Stanford-USC on consecutive Saturdays?

-- Oklahoma-Notre Dame—Over/under on pass interference penalties on the Sooners: 3.5, more if the Irish need the help.

-- Stanford-Washington State—Trips to Pullman aren’t picnics anymore, now that Mike Leach is establishing his program. Trap game.

-- Wisconsin-Ohio State—Gary Anderson has an amazing record vs spread as a road underdog, if you care about things like that.

        *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Each NFL franchise is almost a billion dollar business; some are actually worth more than that. So how come when the Colts scored a TD with 4:13 left in the game to go up 19-7 Sunday, they kicked the PAT instead of going for two? At that point in the game, being up 13 points is no better than being up 12, but being up 14 is way better.

This is the kind of basic strategy a Pop Warner coach would know to do. How does an NFL head coach screw this up?

        12) Kentucky’s basketball team is going to have six freshmen this fall who were McDonald’s All-Americans last year; combined with returning players from LY, and some egos are going to be bruised when really good players are sitting the bench. My question is this: of the six freshmen, how many will still be at Kentucky as sophomores?

        11) Did you know the Frisbee was invented in 1947; who comes up with something like that? Imagine trying to sell that idea for the first time, the strange looks the guy must’ve gotten? He must've made a freakin' fortune.

        10) If you look at ESPN’s top 100 high school basketball seniors from LY, none of them went to high school in New York City, which is highly unusual. Now there might’ve been a kid or two who was from NYC and went to an out-of-town prep school, but none went to HS in the Big Apple.

        9) …… all of which helped make the recruiting battle for Lincoln High’s Isaiah Whitehead a little more juicy, since he is a Class of ’14 kid who is definitely a top 50 player. Seton Hall nosed out St John’s for Whitehead; Kevin Willard is having a very good recruiting year. Weird that St John’s has to go outside NYC to get players.

        8) “Cleveland has thrown in the towel.” NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci, an old Mike Holmgren assistant, on Sunday morning’s **** show. Of course, Cleveland then beat the Vikings in the Metrodome, so the whole throwing-the-towel-in thing was ludicrous.

        7) Its amusing that Holmgren ripped Cleveland for trading Trent Richardson (who he drafted before they fired him) but then said he once offered the Colts his entire 2012 draft for Andrew Luck.

You see, having a really good QB is critical in the NFL; the Browns don’t think they’ve got one, so they need to stockpile draft picks to get one, and some other players too. Holmgren is a smart guy, but so are the people running the Browns; people just see situations differently sometimes.

        6) I always wondered how much these companies pay to sponsor NASCAR teams; well when NAPA pulled out of sponsoring Michael Waltrip’s team last week, they took their $16M a year with them. $16M a year!!! That buys an awful lot of shock absorbers.

        5) Phillies did the expected and named Ryne Sandberg fulltime manager; he is not an upgrade over Charlie Manuel, but the Phils’ roster is aging so much it may not matter who the manager is for the next couple years.

        4) Hockey season starts next week (yes, next week!!!); if you’ve never seen a pro hockey game in person, do it.

It is the one sport that gains the most in the translation between TV and being there in person. Its an excellent night out.

        3) Michigan just snuck by Akron/UConn the last two weeks, which is a major red flag- the Zips followed up their 28-24 loss by losing at home to UL-Lafayette the next week. Wolverines aren’t getting enough out of their passing game. Interesting to see how they do in league play.

        2) Rollerball was on Turner Classic Movies last week; really, it was. It is a pretty goood movie, with a much, much younger James Caan starring as a futuristic roller derby star, but a classic? Really?

        1) College basketball practice starts this weekend; teams are allowed 30 practices over 42 days starting Friday, allowing them to stretch workouts out more. As soon as baseball ends on Sunday, we’ll be hitting the books, getting ready for the season this winter.

        • Week 4 Rewind

          September 23, 2013

LSU improved to 4-0 but failed to cover the spread in a 35-21 win over Auburn as a 17-point home favorite. The 56 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 54-point total to improve to 4-0 in LSU games.

Les Miles’s team will put its unbeaten record on the line Saturday at Georgia. The Bayou Bengals are 5-6 ATS in 11 games as a road underdog on Miles’s watch.

Zach Mettenberger will be making his return to Athens, where his college career began. Mettenberger, who transferred from UGA to LSU after an arrest as a freshman, is playing the best football of his career. He threw for 229 yards in the win over Auburn. Mettenberger has a 10/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio through four games.

Florida will be without starting junior quarterback Jeff Driskel for the rest of the season. Driskel suffered a broken fibula during the first quarter of a 31-17 win over Tennessee. The Gators failed to cover as 16 ½-point home favorites.

Former back-up QB Jacoby Brissett transferred to North Carolina St., so the job fell to junior Tyler Murphy, who had just one previous career pass on a two-point conversion at Miami two weeks ago.

But Murphy responded with poise. He completed 8-of-14 throws for 134 yards with one TD and zero interceptions. Most promising, Murphy demonstrated his scrambling skills with 84 rushing yards, including a seven-yard TD scamper.

Trailing 31-10 with 10:20 remaining, Justin Worley threw an 18-yard TD pass to Pig Howard to give UT supporters a backdoor cover. The 48 combined points snuck ‘over’ the 47 ½-point total. UF will go to Lexington in Week 5 in search of a 27th straight win over Kentucky.

Georgia was a victim to a look-ahead spot in its 45-21 non-covering win over North Texas as a 33-point home favorite. The Mean Green actually had the game knotted at 21-21 after blocking a UGA punt for a TD early in the third quarter.

James Franklin helped Missouri improve to 3-0 in a 45-28 win at Indiana as a three-point favorite. Franklin threw for 343 yards and two TDs while also rushing for 61 yards and one score. The Tigers, who are 2-0-1 ATS, host Arkansas St. before back-to-back road assignments at Vandy and at Georgia.

Franklin appears to be back in the form he displayed in 2011 rather than last year’s injury-riddled campaign. He has 873 passing yards and 182 yards rushing.

Arkansas allowed a 24-7 lead to get away in a 28-24 loss at Rutgers. The Razorbacks played without starting QB Brandon Allen, who is ‘questionable’ Saturday vs. Texas A&M. The Hogs, who fell to 3-1 straight up and failed to cover for the third straight week, will be seeking revenge for a 58-10 loss to the Aggies in College Station last year.

Alabama and Vandy never threatened to cover the spread in double-digit wins over Colorado St. and UMass, respectively. The Crimson Tide will take on undefeated Ole Miss on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Notre Dame handed Michigan State its first loss of the season in a 17-13 win as a four-point home favorite. If you took the Spartans early in the week when they were seven-point underdogs, then you cashed a ticket like me. The number dropped down to four late Friday afternoon.

Brian Kelly’s squad will take on Oklahoma this weekend. The Sooners are short favorites in this revenge game after losing 30-13 to the Irish last season in Norman.

Maryland improved to 4-0 both SU and ATS with its 37-0 win over West Virginia as a four-point favorite in Baltimore. The Terrapins have an open date to prepare for a trip to Tallahassee to take on Florida St.

Wisconsin bounced back from its gut-wrenching setback at Arizona St. to pound Purdue by a 41-10 count as a 22-point home favorite. The 51 combined points went ‘over’ the 49-point total. Melvin Gordon leads the nation in rushing after gaining 147 yards and running for three TDs against the Boilermakers. The Badgers are seven-point ‘dogs Saturday at Ohio St.

Georgia Tech (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) remained unbeaten by rallying from a double-digit deficit to beat North Carolina 28-20 as a 6.5-point home favorite. The Yellow Jackets host Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

Va. Tech needed overtime to sneak past Marshall 29-21 in Blacksburg. The Hokies won their third consecutive game but dropped to 0-3-1 ATS with the non-cover as 8.5-point home favorites.

Stanford dominated Arizona State in a 42-28 win that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. The Cardinal raced out to a 39-7 advantage en route to an easy spread cover as a 6 ½-point home favorite.

Utah State is now 17-2 ATS in its last 19 games as a road underdog following its 17-14 loss at USC as a 6 ½-point ‘dog. The Trojans travel to Tempe this weekend for a crucial conference game against Arizona St.

Utah picked up a huge win in a 20-13 triumph at BYU as a seven-point underdog. The Utes got the victory despite converting just one out of 14 third-down plays.

            • 4th Quarter Covers - Week 4

              September 23, 2013

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the fourth weekend of college football. Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows, get the details in this weekly column.

Clemson (-14) 26, N.C. State 14: Highly ranked Clemson had a battle Thursday night in a game that was rather even statistically. Late in the third quarter a touchdown allowed the Tigers to pull away, going up 20-7 and past the spread for the first time and the favorite cover seemed likely after Clemson scored early in the fourth to go up 26-7. They went for two after that touchdown and failed, a key play for those that had -14 on the game as NC State would add a late touchdown with less than four minutes to go to put the final margin at 12. After a failed onside kick Clemson had the ball back in great field position and eventually moved into field goal range but the Tigers opted to go for it on fourth down rather than kicking a spread-saving field goal.

Fresno State (-4) 41, Boise State 40: Fresno State pulled away in the third quarter of this huge Mountain West clash with a 34-19 lead with just a minute left in the quarter. Boise State quickly scored after a great kick return to get within eight entering the fourth and then went on to take a 40-34 lead in the fourth quarter with back-to-back touchdown drives, the second score coming after a Fresno State fumble. The Bulldogs answered to take the lead with just over two minutes to go after a 13-play drive and while Boise State got to mid-field on the next drive, they came up short, though still earning the underdog cover.

Florida (-15½) 31, Tennessee 17: The Gators lost quarterback Jeff Driskel but still managed to pull away from the Volunteers, leading 24-10 heading into the fourth quarter and then up 31-10 early in the fourth. Tennessee added a touchdown pass to trim the margin back to 14 and the underdog held on as Florida missed a field goal and opted for a short punt in two possessions in Tennessee territory in the final 10 minutes.

Pittsburgh (-4½) 58, Duke 55: Pittsburgh seemed to be in command with a 51-28 lead late in the third quarter but Duke hit a 75-yard pass play late in the third and then was within 10 early in the fourth quarter. Duke had the ball back but a 37-yard interception return touchdown seemingly wrapped things up for Pittsburgh, up 17 with just over eight minutes to go. Duke was able to score another touchdown to get back within 10 and then they were able to get the ball back in good field position after a fumbled snap on a punt attempt for Pittsburgh. It took Duke just three plays to score again, getting within three points with about four minutes to go in the game. Duke failed on the onside kick and Pittsburgh was able to get a first down to run out the clock but the Blue Devils earned an unlikely underdog cover in a wild ACC game.

Penn State (-23½) 34, Kent State 0: Penn State dominated statistically in this matchup but they led just 21-0 entering the fourth quarter. A field goal early in the fourth put the Lions past the spread and Penn State went on to add 10 more points late to pad the scoreboard. 216 yards for Penn State came on the final four possessions with the result in hand as the yardage production was a bit misleading but the Penn State defense was impressive, forcing 10 punts and not allowing a drive longer than 42 yards.

Georgia Tech (-7) 28, North Carolina 20: North Carolina led 20-7 at one point early in the game but Georgia Tech slowly took over the game, eventually leading 21-20 entering the fourth quarter and moving by the home favorite spread with an early fourth quarter score 28-20. The Tar Heels threatened to answer but a drive deep into Yellow Jacket territory ended in an interception.

Notre Dame (-4) 17, Michigan State 13: This game was tied 10-10 through three quarters with a complete dearth of offense but Notre Dame was able to punch in a touchdown very early in the final frame, getting past the spread that opened at -7 and came down throughout the week, eventually closing as low as -4. Most on the underdog Spartans still wound up winning however as Michigan State hit a 42-yard field goal with less than 11 minutes to go in the game. There were seven combined possessions after that field goal be neither team even remotely threatened to add points.

Stanford (-7) 42, Arizona State 28: Stanford was in complete control in this huge Pac-12 contest, leading 39-7 entering the fourth quarter. With some starters out of the game and clearly letting off the gas Arizona State scored three consecutive touchdowns in the fourth to cut the margin to just 11 points and certainly making Cardinal backers a bit nervous. Stanford was able to burn most of the rest of the clock while adding a late field goal and with little time on the clock Arizona State’s final threat ended with an interception.

Louisiana-Lafayette (-7½) 35, Akron 30: This game had some big swings and Akron took back the lead early in the fourth quarter to lead 24-21. With two touchdowns in less than two minutes of game clock the Ragin’ Cajuns appeared on the way to a win and a cover leading by 11 but Akron scored on a 28-yard play with less than 30 seconds to go to flip the ATS result.

Middle Tennessee State (-3) 42, Florida Atlantic 35: This pair of new Conference USA entrants traded scores the entire game with the game tied 21-21 entering the fourth quarter and with matching touchdowns in the final two minutes overtime was forced at 35-35. The Owls scored to force overtime with just three seconds left on 4th down but in overtime the Owls were not able to answer a quick Blue Raiders touchdown, failing on fourth down from the 13-yard line, giving the road favorite a fortunate overtime cover.

Toledo (-14) 38, Central Michigan 17: The Rockets only led by seven entering the fourth quarter as a two touchdown road favorite. Toledo matched the spread early in the fourth and with five minute to go the Rockets put in another score to get past the spread. Turnovers helped the Rockets greatly in a game that was closer than the final score indicated.

LSU (-17½) 35, Auburn 21: LSU dominated the first half, leading 21-0 in the big SEC clash with Auburn but the defense came out lacking intensity in the second half and Auburn made it a game. Entering the fourth quarter the lead was short of the spread at 28-14 but LSU went back up by 21 early in the final frame. With about six minutes to go Auburn took the cover back with an 88-yard touchdown drive and despite LSU starting in Auburn territory on the next drive a fumble cost LSU the opportunity for more points.

              • Top 25 Betting Recap - Week 4

                September 24, 2013

Week 4 of the 2013 NCAA football betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the land and see how they fared against the closing number over the course of this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result-ATS Result)

                1: Alabama (W-L vs. Colorado State 31-6)
The failed cover was a pure situational spot between games against A&M and Ole Miss for the Crimson Tide.

                2: Oregon (Bye)
This week's game against Cal might have 200 offensive plays; and 200 offensive points!

                3: Clemson (W-L vs. NC State 26-14)
Bettors still wish that Dabo Swinney had taken the field goal at the end of the game.

                4: Ohio State (W-W vs. Florida A&M 76-0)
It was the most lopsided score of the season in college football, and it came with a backup quarterback starting the game.

                5: Stanford (W-W vs. Arizona State 42-28)
Stanford logged its first cover of the season and looked way better than ASU did, especially in a 29-0 first half.

                6: LSU (W-L vs. Auburn 35-21)
LSU overcame the rain and Auburn in this one in the Bayou, but failed to cover the number.

                7: Louisville (W-W vs. Florida International 72-0)
The Golden Panthers wanted a running clock in the third quarter of this one.

8: Florida State (W-W vs. Bethune Cookman 54-6)
FSU has outscored its foes by over 40 points per game.

                9: Georgia (W-L vs. North Texas 45-21)
This was a tied game halfway through the third quarter, but in fairness, North Texas scored on two returns.

                10: Texas A&M (W-W vs. SMU 42-13)
Nothing like coming up 25 points short of the total when you score 42 points in a game.

                11: Oklahoma State (Bye)
The Cowboys might be the quietest good team in the nation.

                12: South Carolina (Bye)
Bone spurs in his foot have to be a concern for Jadeveon Clowney.

13: UCLA (W-W vs. New Mexico State 59-13)
Jordan James now has three 100+ yard rushing games for the Bruins.

                14: Oklahoma (Bye)
And now the interesting decision - Blake Bell or Trevor Knight in South Bend?

                15: Michigan (W-L vs. Connecticut 24-21)
Nearly losing to Akron was an accident. Nearly losing to Connecticut is becoming a bad trend.

                16: Miami (W-W vs. Savannah State 77-7)
The Canes came up one score short of breaking the all-time ACC scoring record.

                17: Washington (W-W vs. Idaho State 56-0)
Idaho State managed just 164 yards of offense. Six men rushed for at least 40 yards for U-Dub.

                18: Northwestern (W-L vs. Maine 35-21)
Maine is good, but it shouldn't have been good enough to at least make Northwestern sweat.

                19: Florida (W-L vs. Tennessee 31-17)
Jeff Driskel is out for the season, but the offense looked better under the direction of Tyler Murphy anyway.

                20: Baylor (W-W vs. Louisiana Monroe 70-7)
Last year, Baylor gave up 42 to ULM. This year, not so much...

                21: Ole Miss (Bye)
A bye week going into the Bama game… Interesting setup in Tuscaloosa this week.

22: Notre Dame (W-P vs. Michigan State 17-13)
There were only 474 yards of combined offense in this game.

                23: Arizona State (L-L vs. Stanford 42-28)
ASU was down 29-0 before it finally showed a pulse, and it was down 39-7 going into the fourth quarter.

                24: Wisconsin (W-W vs. Purdue 41-10)
The Badgers are amongst the rare 4-0 ATS teams in the land.

25: Texas Tech (W-L vs. Texas State 33-7)
T-Tech used two walk-on freshmen to throw for a combined 434 yards against Texas State.

                • Games to Watch - Week 5

                  September 23, 2013

                  Ohio State at Wisconsin
As of Monday afternoon, most books had Ohio State (4-0 straight up, 3-1 against the spread) installed as a 7 ½-point home favorite. During Urban Meyer’s two-year tenure, the Buckeyes are 6-5 against the spread as home favorites. After missing back-to-back games with a sprained knee, junior quarterback Braxton Miller is considered ‘probable.’ In his absence, Kenny Guiton has thrown for 664 yards and rushed for 186. Guiton has a 13/2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Wisconsin (3-1 SU, 4-0 ATS) bounced back from its heartbreaking defeat at Arizona State by demolishing Purdue 41-10 as a 22-point home ‘chalk.’ Sophomore RB Melvin Gordon leads the country with 624 rushing yards and seven TDs. Gordon is averaging 11.8 yards per carry and has the potential to take it to the house on any given touch. When these schools met at Camp Randall last year, Ohio State won 21-14 in overtime as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The Bucks have won five of the last six head-to-head meetings both SU and ATS. The ‘over’ is 3-1 for Ohio State this year, 2-2 for Wisconsin. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ABC.

                  Ole Miss at Alabama
Most spots have top-ranked Alabama (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS) favored by 16 ½ points. The Crimson Tide has an 18-21 spread record as a home favorite under Nick Saban. QB A.J. McCarron has 702 passing yards with a 6/2 TD-INT ratio for Alabama. As a road underdog on Hugh Freeze’s watch, Ole Miss (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) owns a 4-1 spread record. The Rebels are 7-1 ATS in their eight games away from Oxford (7 road, 1 neutral) under Freeze. Ole Miss’s leading returning tackler Denzel Nkemdiche (knee) was injured in the opener against Vandy and has missed the last two games. But Freeze told the media Monday afternoon that Nkemdiche would practice on Tuesday and be evaluated later in the week. He and CB Charles Sawyer are both listed as ‘questionable.’ Sawyer was suspended for the 44-23 win at Texas after his arrest on DUI charges the previous weekend. WR Vince Sanders (collarbone) is expected to play. Rebs’ QB Bo Wallace has completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 648 yards with a 4/0 TD-INT ratio. He has also run for 120 yards and three TDs. Jeff Scott has rushed for 330 yards and three TDs, averaging 9.4 YPC. He also has a punt return for a score. ESPN will have the telecast at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.

                  Oklahoma at Notre Dame
Oklahoma (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) will be seeking revenge for last season’s 30-13 home loss to Notre Dame in Norman. The oddsmakers have made the Sooners 3 ½-point favorites. They had an open date following their 51-20 victory over Tulsa. Blake Bell took control of the starting QB job with his 413 passing yards and four TDs without an interception against the Golden Hurricane. OU is 12-10 ATS in its last 22 games as a road favorite. Notre Dame (3-1 SU, 0-3-1 ATS) has only been a home underdog twice under Brian Kelly, going 1-1 both SU and ATS. The Fighting Irish won a 17-13 decision over Michigan State this past weekend as a four-point home favorite. The 30 combined points stayed ‘under’ the 42-point total. NBC will provide television coverage at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

                  Arizona at Washington
Most books are listing Washington (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) as an eight-point favorite. During Steve Sarkisian’s five-year tenure, the Huskies are 9-5 ATS as home favorites. UW has won all three of its games by double-digit margins, including victories over Boise State (38-6) vs. Illinois (34-24 in Chicago). Senior QB Keith Price has completed 77.0 percent of his passes for 877 yards with a 7/1 TD-INT ratio. RB Bishop Sankey has run for 446 yards and four TDs, averaging 7.0 YPC. Arizona (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) has a 2-2 spread record in four games as a road underdog since Rich Rodriguez took over. AU’s new starting QB B.J. Denker has played well through 12 quarters. Denker has rushed for 221 yards and five TDs, in addition to a pair of TD passes without being intercepted. The Wildcats’ star is RB Ka’Deem Carey, who has 299 yards rushing and four TDs. He has a 7.0 YPC average. The ‘under’ is 2-1 for both schools. The ‘over’ has hit in six consecutive head-to-head meetings. When these Pac-12 rivals met last season, Arizona ran away with a 52-17 win as an 8 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ Carey ran for 172 yards and one TD, while AU’s defense intercepted Price twice. AU has had two weeks to prepare for the Huskies, who spanked Idaho St. 56-0 this past weekend. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on FOX.

                  Texas A&M at Arkansas
As of Monday afternoon, there was no line due to the uncertain status of Arkansas QB Brandon Allen, who missed Saturday’s 28-24 loss at Rutgers with a bruised shoulder suffered in a win over Souther Mississippi on Sept. 14. The Razorbacks allowed a 24-7 third-quarter lead to get away in the loss to the Scarlet Knights. Back-up QB A.J. Derby completed 14-of-26 passes for 137 yards and one TD without an interception. Arkansas (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) won the turnover battle 3-0 but couldn’t run the ball effectively like it had done in winning its first three games. Texas A&M (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) has covered the number in three straight outings, including Saturday’s 42-13 win over SMU as a 28 ½-point favorite. The ‘over’ hit in the first three games for the Aggies, but the 55 combined points against the Mustangs dipped well ‘under’ the 80-point total. Johnny Manziel threw for 244 yards and one TD, while also rushing for a team-high 102 yards and two TDs. For the season, Manziel has 1,205 passing yards with a 12/4 TD-INT ratio. He has rushed for 255 yards and three TDs. WR Mike Evans is second in the nation with 575 receiving yards. When these schools met in College Station last year, Texas A&M cruised to a 58-10 win as a 13-point home favorite. ESPN2 will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

                  • College football odds: Week 5 opening line report

Things in the SEC heat up another notch in Week 5 of the college football schedule as the LSU Tigers travel to Athens, Georgia to face the Bulldogs.

LSU (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) is coming off a 35-21 victory over Auburn in which QB Zach Mettenberger continued his excellent play.

The big senior is now 59-of-91 for 1,026 yards with 10 TDs and 1 pick on the season.

Georgia (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) defeated North Texas 45-21 Saturday and has an SEC victory under its belt already having defeated South Carolina 41-30 in Week 2.

Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, and his team were all relatively close when discussing where to open this battle of SEC heavyweights.

"We were all pretty solid on this one. We were all from -2 to -4 so I stuck it at -3," Korner told Covers. "These teams are as even as they can be. You have to really look at that home field advantage here and I don't really think this will go too far off the number."

Oklahoma Sooners at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+2.5)

The Sooners (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) have had a pair of cake walks and a tough victory versus West Virginia in Week 2. They'll be coming off a bye week and heading to Indiana to face Notre Dame.

After a loss to Michigan in Week 2, The Irish (3-1 SU, 0-3-1 ATS) have put together back-to-back wins over Purdue and Michigan State.

Korner and his team were all on the Sooners for this intriguing matchup.

"We were all on Oklahoma with a low of one and a high of five," Korner said. "Even though Oklahoma is favored, Notre Dame has a great chance in this one. We should see some good two-way action on this game right around that field goal."

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-7.5)

Wisconsin (3-1 SU, 4-0 ATS) is one of just five schools left with a 4-0 ATS record (Marlyand, UTSA, Washington State, Wyoming).

The running game has gotten it done for the Badgers as they are third in the country averaging 349.8 rushing yards per game.

The Buckeyes (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) posted a 76-0 victory over Florida A&M in their last game despite missing the services of QB Braxton Miller.

Backup Kenny Guiton set a school record with six TD tosses in the rout over the Rattlers.

"We had Ohio State favored higher but I actually took the lowest number of all five of us," Korner explained. "I think Wisconsin is a live dog here. They play really well during the regular season and they've got a good following."

Mississippi Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide (-18)

Ole Miss (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) is off to a great start and will head to Alabama after a bye week. Prior to the week off, the Rebels torched Texas 44-23 in Austin.

Nick Saban and the Tide (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS) are still the top-ranked team in the country but are coming off a modest 31-6 victory over Colorado State; a team which they probably should have had an easier time with.

Despite the high opening line, Korner feels the Rebels will be tough.

"I think Mississippi is good and they'll get some play at that number," Korner said. "I wanted to be high on this but not totally high because I think Mississippi can play with these guys. Alabama hasn't really blown out those couple of teams that we thought they were going to."

Opinions from Korner and his team varied for this matchup.

"We had a low of 15 and a high of 23. I really wanted to put it in the 20s but I put it at Alabama -18."

                    • Beyond the BCS: Capping college football's small conferences

Some of the best betting value in college football is hiding beyond the BCS, in the small conferences. Each week, Covers Experts’ Doc’s Sports will look at the little programs that could help you make big cash this college season.

Team to watch: Bowling Green Falcons (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)

                      This week: -14.5 vs. Akron

Bowling Green has won four in a row against Akron, including a 24-10 road victory last season. The Falcons are also 5-0 ATS in their last five against the Zips. Akron may be hard-pressed to contain Bowling Green’s offense and turn the tide of the head-to-head series.

The Falcons are averaging 510.2 total yards through four games and they went off for 576 in its first Mid-American Conference contest (a 41-22 thrashing of Kent State). Matt Johnson is throwing for 250 yards per game and Travis Greene is averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

The Falcons are 7-1 ATS in their last eight conference showdowns and 5-0 ATS in their last five against teams with losing records (Akron is 1-3). They are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 overall and 6-2 ATS in their last eight home games.

Team to beware: Central Michigan Chippewas (1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS)

This week: +23.5 at North Carolina State

Central Michigan travels to N.C. State Saturday and its first foray into BCS competition this season did not end well. The Chippewas paid a visit to the Big House and trailed Michigan 56-6 after three quarters before losing 59-9. They are allowing 193.5 rushing yards per game (Michigan went for 242), which is bad news because the N.C. State offense is racking up 196.7 ground yards per contest.

Recent trends also do not favor Central Michigan. The team is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 road games, 2-9 ATS in its last 11 out of conference, 0-4 ATS in its last four against the ACC, and 2-10 ATS in its last 12 against opponents with winning records (the Wolfpack are 2-1 following a 26-14 loss to Clemson).

Total team: Utah State Aggies (2-2 SU, 3-1 O/U)

This week: 61 at San Jose State

Utah State’s defense has been stingy this season, especially since an opening loss to Utah. The Aggies held Air Force to 20 points in a blowout win, crushed Weber State 70-6, and they just barely lost 17-14 on the road at Southern Cal last week.

Weber State passed for a mere 34 yards on 20 attempts and USC managed just 164 through the air. Friday opponent San Jose State may have to try its hand on the ground, but the team is averaging only 74.7 rushing yards per game.

The under is 4-0 in Utah State’s last four Friday dates and 6-0 in its last six against teams with losing records (San Jose State is 1-2). It is a solid 13-6 in the team’s last 19 overall.

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: What bettors need to know
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Tech Hokies at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-7, 42)

Georgia Tech seeks to continue its strong start in the ACC while visiting Virginia Tech strives to continue its recent success against the Yellow Jackets when the squads meet Thursday night. Georgia Tech has won its first two ACC games for just the third time in 15 years and can place a firm grasp on the Coastal Division lead with a win over the Hokies, their biggest division threat. Virginia Tech has won three straight and five of the last six meetings.

The Yellow Jackets defeated North Carolina 28-20 last week and have won six consecutive ACC regular-season games, one shy of the school mark set from 2009-10. Virginia Tech has won three consecutive games since losing to Alabama in its opener, but had to go into triple-overtime before outlasting Marshall 29-21 last week. The Hokies beat Georgia Tech last season 20-17 in overtime.

                                TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Georgia Tech opened at -7.5 and has moved to a touchdown favorite. The total opened at 41.5 and has moved up to 42.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the high 60s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing ENE at 5 mph.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (3-1, 0-0 ACC, 0-3-1 ATS): Senior quarterback Logan Thomas is off to a poor start, completing 48.5 percent of his passes and being intercepted six times while throwing four touchdown passes. Thomas has rushed for 22 career touchdowns - one off the school mark for quarterbacks set by Tyrod Taylor (2007-10) - while redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds (who rushed for 132 yards against Alabama in his first collegiate game) has a team-best 352 rushing yards. Senior defensive end J.R. Collins has a team-best 4.5 sacks, senior middle linebacker Jack Tyler has a team-high 33 tackles while freshman cornerback Brandon Facyson (three) and junior safety Detrick Bonner (two) have combined for five of the Hokies’ nine interceptions for a defense that ranks fifth nationally (233.3 yards per game).

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (3-0, 2-0 ACC, 3-0-0 ATS): The Yellow Jackets are racking up 345.3 yards per game on the ground (fourth nationally) and have rushed for at least 324 in each game. Senior David Sims (211 yards) has yet to be tackled for a loss on 38 rushes, sophomore quarterback Vad Lee (seven passing touchdowns) has 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and senior Robert Godhigh (174 yards) is averaging 12.4 yards per rush and also has five receptions for 83 yards. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets are allowing 11.3 points (12th nationally) and are unsure whether junior outside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy (hamstring) or sophomore safety Chris Milton (wrist) will be available due to injuries suffered in the North Carolina game.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                                * Hokies are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
                                * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                                * Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.

                                EXTRA POINTS:

                                1. Virginia Tech leads the series 7-3.

                                2. Georgia Tech is 18-0 when scoring 40 or more points in coach Paul Johnson’s six seasons.

                                3. The Hokies scored their 18th blocked-punt touchdown during coach Frank Beamer’s 27-season tenure last week when senior Kyle Fuller made the block and junior Derek DiNardo recovered and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown.

Despite a lack of familiarity with each other historically, Iowa State and Tulsa are far from strangers. On Thursday, the Golden Hurricane welcome the Cyclones in the third game between the schools over the last 12 months. Iowa State kicked off its 2012 campaign with a 38-23 comeback victory over Tulsa on Sept. 1, but the Golden Hurricane returned the favor 31-17 in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 to cap off the second 11-win season in school history.

Both schools are off to a slow start in 2013 and coming off difficult losses. Iowa State fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2007 in a 27-21 home setback against Iowa on Sept. 14 despite a career day from sophomore receiver Quenton Bundrage. Tulsa was routed by Oklahoma 51-20 on the same day, allowing scores on nine of the Sooners’ 11 possessions while also surrendering 607 yards of total offense.

                                TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE: Tulsa opened as a 3-point favorite and has been bet down to -2.5. The total has remained steady at 54 points.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 80s with clear skies and winds blowing SSE at 8 mph.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (0-2, 0-2 ATS): Bundrage set career highs with seven catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns, getting two of those scores over the final 4:27 as the Cyclones attempted to rally from a 20-point deficit. Sophomore quarterback Sam Richardson made his fourth career start against Iowa, but was still hampered by the sprained ankle he suffered in a season-opening loss to Northern Iowa. Coach Paul Rhoads suggested that if Richardson – who is also dealing with a groin injury – is limited Thursday, backup Grant Rohach will take over.

ABOUT TULSA (1-2, 0-3 ATS): The Golden Hurricane were unanimously selected to repeat as Conference USA West Division champions, but have been held to less than 95 yards rushing in each of their losses to Bowling Green and Oklahoma. "You can't just plan on becoming more physical and have it happen," coach Bill Blankenship said. "You have to grow into it. I hope that's where we are now." Senior running back Trey Watts has been a bright spot, however, and ranks third in the nation with 200 all-purpose yards per game.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Cyclones are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a bye week.
                                * Golden Hurricane are 1-7 ATS in their last eight vs. Big 12.
                                * Under is 13-5 in Cyclones last 18 road games.

                                EXTRA POINTS:

                                1. Tulsa has won eight in a row at home, but each of the last four victories – and five of the last six – have come by six points or fewer.

                                2. Iowa State has yielded an average of 223 rushing yards over its first two games, which ranks 108th in FBS.

                                3. The Golden Hurricane’s two rushing touchdowns against the Sooners were their first of the season.
