    October 1, 2013

All 10 teams are now set in the playoffs, and today, we're taking a look at the ones that made you the most money and the ones that cost you the most money on the season.

    Money-Makers

Cleveland Indians (92-70, +$2,492) - Cleveland finished as the best money team in the game this year, but it still has to win the AL Wild Card game against Tampa Bay just to get into the main field.

Pittsburgh Pirates (94-68, +$2,342) - The Bucs were leading the way for most of the year, but they stumbled at the end of August just a bit. They'll be hosting the NL Wild Card game at what should be a raucous PNC Park on Tuesday night, and a win in that game would be the crowning achievement in the best season that the city of Pittsburgh has seen in over two decades.

Boston Red Sox (97-65, +$1,864) - The BoSox had a bad last week of the season, but they still wrapped the season owners the best record in the American League. Do they have the pitchers to really make it stand up? John Lackey, Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester have the weight of the whole city of Beantown on their shoulders.

Oakland Athletics (96-66, +$1,851) - Oakland pulled away from the Rangers in August and never looked back, closing the door on the AL West title for the second straight season. An awesome 52-29 record at home was what did the job, and with home-field advantage secure, that could make a tremendous difference in this year's series against Detroit.

St. Louis Cardinals (97-65, +$1,106) - Manager Mike Matheny has a lot of questions to answer about his starting rotation, but he still has the team that posted the best record in baseball. Unfortunately for the Cards, they aren't sneaking up on anyone this year as they did two years ago when they came out of nowhere to win the Fall Classic.

Atlanta Braves (96-66, +$994) - Atlanta won a league-best 56 games at home this season, and it is going to have to hold that home field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs if it wants a shot against the Dodgers, who might have the best team in the bigs.

Los Angeles Dodgers (92-70, +$541) - They were once down over $2,000 this year, and they were once up over $1,000 this year, but the Dodgers went on to finish with just a profit of $541 at the end. Manager Don Mattingly though, has this pitching staff set up the way he wants it for the postseason.

Tampa Bay Rays (92-71, +$77) - The Rays just squeaked in as money makers on the season, and they can thank David Price for it. Price went the distance in Game 163 against the Rangers on the road to beat the odds and get his team into the second season. That was also good enough to keep this from being a losing money team on the year to boot.

    Money-Burners

Cincinnati Reds (90-72, -$509) - You don't need to look any further than the end of the regular season to see why the Reds cost us a chunk of change this year. They lost their last five games of the regular season, all of which were at home, and they dropped $825 in that stretch.

Detroit Tigers (93-69, -$1,150) - If the glass is half full, you could say that the Tigers would have gone 79-49 and would have been up $1,031 without Justin Verlander. If the glass is half empty, you could say that the Tigers would have gone 68-62 and would have lost $2,500 without Max Scherzer.

    • Preview: Rays (92-71) at Indians (92-70)
      Game: 1
      Venue: Progressive Field
      Date: October 02, 2013 8:07 PM EDT

CLEVELAND (AP) - Sporting sunglasses, a teal shirt and a backpack hanging from his shoulder, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon looked like a tourist as he arrived late for his news conference.

Maddon didn't have time to slip into his uniform and had a valid excuse. The Rays have been on the road.

In the past week, they've gone from Tampa to New York to Toronto to Texas to Cleveland, a journey covering 3,627 miles.

On Wednesday night, the Rays hope to book a trip to Boston.

Getting a complete game from starter David Price, Tampa Bay beat Texas 5-2 in a tiebreaker on Monday night, earning the Rays a wild-card spot for the third time in four years and a chance to face the Indians, making their first appearance in October since 2007.

Forced to win almost every day down the stretch as they went neck-and-neck-and-neck with the Indians and Rangers in a thrilling wild-card scramble in the final weeks of September, the Rays won in Toronto on Sunday before traveling deep in the heart of Texas and surviving a win-or-go-home scenario.

``I'll tell you what,' said Maddon, whose team went 14-5 after Sept. 12. ``We've already played this wild-card game a couple times. We did it in Toronto a couple days ago. We did it yesterday in Texas, and we're going to come here tomorrow and do it again. I don't know if there's a battle-tested component to that, if you get immune to whatever that pressure is and you go play.'

Wednesday's winner will meet the Red Sox in Game 1 of the division series on Friday.

The Rays always believed they'd be in position to make a run at a first World Series title. And although they've racked up some frequent-flyer miles and lived out of their suitcases to keep their season alive, they're confident their season isn't about to end.

``When you get into this momentum kind of a thing on a daily basis and you're playing great competition and you're going from city to city to city and it's an adverse territory, all of this stuff is what you train for and you really dig and you love it,' Maddon said. ``You don't have time to get nervous or overthink, you've just got to get ready and go play - and for our guys, they kind of like that moment right now.'

Like the Rays, the Indians had to scrap their way into the postseason. Cleveland ended a topsy-turvy regular season under manager Terry Francona by ripping off 10 wins in a row, playing error-free ball during the stretch.

Now, when every mistake is magnified and there's no room for lapses, the Indians want to keep rolling and will start rookie Danny Salazar in their biggest game in six seasons.

``This team wasn't expected to do anything,' said right fielder Nick Swisher, one of the team's high-profile free-agent signings. ``Just to be where we are right now is awesome, man.'

Tampa won four of the six games against Cleveland this season, but the teams haven't met since early June.

Rays starter Alex Cobb (11-3) was asked what he learned about the Indians in his one start against them on April 6.

``That was so long ago, I don't know if that really applies anymore,' he said.

``Plus,' Maddon said, interrupting his young right-hander. ``That was before you got hit in the head.'

Fortunately, the Rays can now make light of the scary situation involving Cobb, who was struck in the head by a line drive hit by Kansas City's Eric Hosmer on June 15. Cobb missed 50 games with a concussion, but he's been a different pitcher since the injury, going 5-1 with a 2.41 ERA in nine starts.

Cobb said two months of rest may have helped, but he was also driven to pitch in the postseason after missing out in 2011 when he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his ribs.

``Watching the postseason and just the feeling of being left out is indescribable,' he said. ``It's a terrible feeling that you don't want to have again, so I think it was extra motivation to get back and it definitely fueled the fire even more to get back to the postseason and know that we have a special group that can go far.'

The Indians feel just as strongly about making this an unforgettable season, perhaps even ending Cleveland's 65-year drought between World Series titles.

Francona has no hesitation in handing the ball to Salazar (2-3), an unflappable 23-year-old who began the season at Double-A Akron but zoomed to the majors and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his debut. The Rays have never faced him.

``Believe me, we wouldn't pitch him if we weren't confident in him giving us the best chance to win,' Francona said. ``Danny has done nothing to make us think he can't handle this. He's so poised. If I had stuff like him, I'd be poised, too. But there's a difference between throwing 100 mph and being able to get major league hitters out. Danny can do that.'

NOTES: Indians CF and leadoff hitter Michael Bourn did some agility drills and ran the bases before working out with his teammates. He pulled up with a leg injury on Sunday in Minnesota, and his status for Wednesday is not yet known. ... The teams have to have their 25-man rosters set by 10 a.m. Wednesday. .... Francona followed up on his joke about the Indians avoiding chicken and beer during his September surge, a jab at his final days in Boston. ``I lied about that,' he said. ``We have had some chicken.'

Rays at Indians: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Indians (+104, 7)

The Cleveland Indians raced through September with the best record in the major leagues, including a 10-game winning streak to close out the regular season. Their reward for that finishing kick is hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in a one-game American League wild card playoff on Wednesday for the right to play the top-seeded Boston Red Sox in the Division Series. The Rays earned their entry Monday by winning 5-2 at Texas in a one-game tiebreaker.

That game at Texas forced Tampa Bay to use ace David Price for all nine innings, leaving him unavailable to face Cleveland. The Indians would have preferred to save Ubaldo Jimenez for Wednesday, but an uncertain status forced him to go in his regular rotation spot Sunday. Cleveland feasted on sub-.500 opponents in September but was 36-52 in the regular season against teams with winning records, including 2-4 against the Rays.

        TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 70s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing NE at 2 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Cobb (11-3, 2.76 ERA) vs. Indians RH Danny Salazar (2-3, 3.12)

Cobb finished up the regular season strong with wins in each of his last three starts. The Boston native surrendered a total of three runs on 23 1/3 innings while striking out 26 in those three turns and yielded more than two earned runs just twice in his last nine starts. Cobb made his first start of the season against Cleveland on April 6 and scattered four hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Indians monitored Salazar carefully over the final month of the season, pulling him from games before 90 pitches. The 23-year-old Dominican struck out eight and allowed two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings on Sept. 25 before being lifted after 89 pitches - his highest total since Aug. 7. Salazar will be backed up by a bullpen that now includes former ace Justin Masterson.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Cleveland.
        * Rays are 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
        * Rays are 8-22 in the last 30 meetings in Cleveland.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Rays 3B Evan Longoria is 12-for-29 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in his last seven games.

        2. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis closed out the regular season 13-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak.

        3. Tampa Bay 1B James Loney led the majors in road batting average at .351.

Friday's MLB NLDS action: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals (-135, 7)

                    Cardinals lead series 1-0.

Reggie Jackson may be the original "Mr. October," but Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals is making a strong argument that he deserves the title in the 21st century. Beltran continued his postseason heroics with a three-run homer to spark St. Louis to a 9-1 rout of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Thursday. The Cardinals will look to take a 2-0 lead in Friday's Game 2 of the best-of-five series.

Beltran's blast was his 15th in 35 postseason games, tying Babe Ruth for eighth place on the all-time list. "He's like our secret weapon when it comes to the postseason. He steps up every time," Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter said of Beltran. Pittsburgh managed only four hits - two by Andrew McCutchen - and got its only run on a homer by Pedro Alvarez, continuing a trend that has seen the Pirates outscored 35-11 in their last four games in St. Louis.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network

WEATHER: Temperatures in mid 80s with partly cloudy skies and a 17 percent chance of rain. Winds blowing south at 12 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (10-7, 3.22 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (15-10, 3.97)

Cole showed why he was the top overall pick in the 2011 draft, winning his last four starts and allowing six runs in five September outings. The 23-year-old fireballer has never faced St. Louis, but he was 4-2 with a 2.38 ERA in seven starts away from home. Cole has not pitched since Sept. 24, when he limited the Chicago Cubs to two runs over six innings.

Lynn also had a strong finish to the season, winning his last two starts and allowing one run and eight hits over 12 1/3 innings. He also faced the Cubs in his last turn, blanking them on four hits over six innings, and permitted a total of four runs (three earned) in his last four starts. Lynn made five starts against Pittsburgh this season, going 2-1 with a 5.60 ERA.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                    * Cardinals are 4-1 in Lynns last five home starts vs. Pirates.
                    * Over is 32-15-4 in the last 51 meetings in St. Louis.
                    * Pirates are 0-5 in the last five meetings in St. Louis.

                    WALK-OFFS:

                    1. Lynn has held McCutchen to four hits in 26 at-bats with 10 strikeouts.

                    2. Cole struck out 39 and allowed only 24 hits in 32 innings in September.

                    3. Beltran trails only Derek Jeter (20) and Albert Pujols (18) for the most postseason homers among active players.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (-104, 6.5)

                    Dodgers lead series 1-0.

The Atlanta Braves struck out 15 times in a series-opening loss and now have to deal with Los Angeles right-hander Zack Greinke when they host the Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Friday. Atlanta hitters fanned 12 times in seven innings against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener and must fare better against Greinke to avoid heading to Los Angeles in an 0-2 hole. The Braves have lost four consecutive home postseason games.

The Dodgers had 11 hits in Thursday’s 6-1 victory, including a two-run homer by Adrian Gonzalez - the first postseason blast of his career. A.J. Ellis doubled twice and hopes to continue his surge as he is 4-for-10 with a homer against Game 2 starter Mike Minor. Atlanta had just five hits in the opener, with the high-priced B.J. Upton (.184 average) starting the game on the bench and the well-paid Dan Uggla (.179) left off the playoff roster.

                    TV: 6:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 80s with partly cloudy skies and winds SE at 3 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (15-4, 2.63 ERA) vs. Braves LH Mike Minor (15-12, 3.11)

Greinke was just 1-1 over his last five starts despite allowing just six runs. He blanked Atlanta on four hits over seven innings on June 6 and is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three career outings against the Braves. Greinke is 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 career postseason appearances (12 starts).

Minor is making his first career playoff start. He is 1-1 with a 2.32 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers, including a 1-0 mark and 2.25 ERA in two outings this season. Minor went 0-4 with a 3.94 ERA in five September starts.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 4-1 in Minors last five starts vs. Dodgers.
                    * Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
                    * Under is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings in Atlanta.

                    WALK-OFFS:

                    1. The Braves were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the opener, with 3B Chris Johnson delivering a run-scoring single.

                    2. Dodgers OF Andre Ethier (ankle) was included on the postseason roster and grounded out as a pinch hitter in the opener.

                    3. Atlanta RF Justin Upton is 5-for-11 with a homer against Greinke.

Friday's MLB ALDS action: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-135, 6.5)

The Tampa Bay Rays have been in playoff mode for the last few weeks while battling for the wild card, winning a one-game tiebreaker in Texas on Monday and taking the one-game wild card playoff in Cleveland on Wednesday. Their reward is a trip to face the well-rested and top-seeded Boston Red Sox on Friday in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. The Red Sox will be playing for the first time since ending the regular season on Sunday.

Boston played an intersquad game on Wednesday to keep everybody fresh but will need to get into playoff mode quickly after spending the bulk of September comfortably ahead of the rest of the AL East. The Red Sox took 12 of the 19 meetings against Tampa Bay during the regular season, including two of three on the road from Sept. 10-12 to help put the division out of reach. The Rays won 10 of their last 12 going back to the regular season, with the pitching holding opponents to 2.83 runs in that span.

                    TV: 3:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (17-4, 3.29 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (15-8, 3.75)

Moore finished out the regular season with wins in each of his last two starts but struggled with his command in September, issuing 20 walks in 29 total innings over six starts. The 24-year-old had one of his best starts at Boston on July 22, allowing just two hits and walking one in a shutout. Moore is making his third career postseason appearance - second start - and yielded a total of one run on three hits in 10 innings during the 2011 ALDS.

Lester had a string of nine straight quality starts come to an end at Baltimore last Saturday, when he was reached for four runs on nine hits in five innings. The 29-year-old faced Tampa Bay four times in the regular season and went 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA, including a win in the most recent meeting on July 23. Lester is 2-3 with a 2.57 ERA in eight career postseason games - six starts - but went 0-2 against the Rays in the 2008 ALCS.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 6-1 in Lester's last seven home starts vs. Rays.
                    * Rays are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Boston.
                    * Under is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings in Boston.

                    WALK-OFFS:

                    1. The Red Sox are expected to go with Jonny Gomes in left field against the left-handed Moore over Daniel Nava and Mike Carp.

                    2. The Rays beat Boston in seven games in the 2008 ALCS - the only postseason meeting between the teams.

                    3. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria is batting just .196 with 34 strikeouts in 26 postseason games.

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics (+112, 6.5)

The Oakland Athletics have a recent history of making the playoffs only to disappoint when the postseason begins. They will set about changing that when they host the Detroit Tigers in the opener of the American League Division Series on Friday. The Tigers are enjoying their third straight trip to the postseason and advanced to the Championship Series in each of the past two seasons.

The Athletics made the playoffs six times since 2000 and advanced past the Division Series only once, when they were swept out of the ALCS by Detroit in 2006. The Tigers played heartbreaker for Oakland last October as well, claiming a 6-0 victory in a decisive Game 5 of the ALDS. The big difference this time around is the health of Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera, who is dealing with abdominal and groin injuries and managed just two extra-base hits in his final 25 games.

                    TV: 9:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 70s with clear skies and winds blowing NNE at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Max Scherzer (21-3, 2.90 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Bartolo Colon (18-6, 2.65)

Scherzer is the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award and finished the season with a gem, striking out 10 and allowing two hits in seven scoreless innings at Minnesota. The 29-year-old punched out eight and yielded an unearned run on three hits 5 1/3 innings against Oakland in Game 4 last October but was left without a decision when the bullpen blew the save. Scherzer was lit up by the Athletics on Aug. 29, surrendering six runs (five earned) over five innings in another no decision.

Colon finished up the season with four straight wins, posting a 1.04 ERA and issuing only four walks in that span. The burly veteran went up against Scherzer on Aug. 29 and did not factor in the decision, allowing one run on seven hits in five innings. Colon missed the playoffs last season but is 2-3 with a 3.61 ERA in nine career postseason starts.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
                    * Over is 4-1-2 in Scherzers last seven starts vs. Athletics.
                    * Under is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Oakland.

                    WALK-OFFS:

                    1. Athletics LF Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) is hoping to play the outfield on Friday but could be stuck at DH, leaving Brandon Moss in left.

                    2. Detroit RHP Bruce Rondon (elbow inflammation) and LHP Phil Coke (forearm) will not appear in the ALDS.

                    3. Oakland RHP A.J. Griffin, who posted a 3.83 ERA over 200 innings in the regular season, was left off the ALDS roster due to mild tendinitis in his right elbow.

                        Game: 2
                        Venue: Fenway Park

The Tampa Bay Rays owe their playoff berth, at least in part, to David Price.

Facing a potential 0-2 deficit, they'll turn to him to help even their division series up.

Price looks to continue his mastery at Fenway Park on Saturday as Tampa Bay meets the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL division series.

Boston used a combined eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings Friday en route to a 12-2 victory and a 1-0 series advantage. History would be squarely in the Red Sox' favor with another victory Saturday.

Twenty-four teams have fallen behind 0-2 in divisional series since 2004, with 23 ultimately losing the series.

The Rays, who were playing in their fourth city in six days, had won 10 of 12 before succumbing with sloppy defense behind a shaky Matt Moore. He yielded eight runs - seven earned - and eight hits, two walks, a hitter batter and a wild pitch over 4 1-3 innings.

Tampa Bay held a 2-0 lead after the top of the fourth with Jon Lester giving up solo homers to Sean Rodriguez and Ben Zobrist. The Red Sox then batted around in both the fourth and fifth innings, a first in the franchise's postseason history.

The game took a turn in the fourth when Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers called for a high flyball off the bat of David Ortiz, but then let up allowing the ball to drop for a ground-rule double. Four batters later, Moore was late covering first base, which led to three more runs in the inning.

"We've been playing very well. We've not been making any mistakes. We made a bunch tonight," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "But I've also learned one other thing regarding baseball: 24 hours can make a huge difference. That's just one game, baby. That's just one. We'll be back tomorrow. I promise you."

Having Price (10-8, 3.33 ERA) on the mound has to bolster Maddon's confidence. The left-hander threw a seven-hitter in a 5-2 victory over Texas in Game 163 on Monday, putting the Rays in position to knock off Cleveland in Wednesday's AL wild-card game.

He's lost all three career postseason starts with a 4.66 ERA, though each contest came against Texas. The Red Sox, whom Price threw 2 1-3 scoreless innings of relief against as a rookie in the 2008 AL championship series, figures to be an ideal opponent to help turn his playoff slump around.

Price is 10-6 with a 2.93 ERA in 20 career starts against the Red Sox, including a 6-1 mark with a 1.88 ERA in 10 games in Boston. He was 2-0 in three starts there this year while limiting the Red Sox to three runs on solo homers over 22 1-3 innings. He threw a five-hitter in a 5-1 win in Boston on July 24.

Price limited to Dustin Pedroia to two hits in 14 at_bats this season, and Ortiz is batting .216 in all of their matchups, with no homers in 37 at_bats.

Speculation is swirling that this could be Price's last start in a Rays uniform. He'll become a free agent after 2015 and Tampa Bay - which is unlikely to retain him with one of baseball's lowest payrolls - could seek a return on him through the trade market.

"Whatever happens, I want to completely absorb myself and my team and my teammates like we have all year," he told the team's official website. "And that's a big part of why we're here right now."

Boston will counter with John Lackey (10-13, 3.52), who posted a 5.33 ERA over his final four starts of the year. The Red Sox are hoping he'll be recharged with Saturday marking his first outing in 11 days.

The right-hander is 3-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 14 career postseason games, though he hasn't appeared in one since 2009. He's 3-5 with a 6.70 ERA in nine starts versus the Rays since joining the Red Sox in 2010.

Desmond Jennings had been 13 for 26 over his previous nine games with eight RBIs before going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Friday. He's 1 for 11 with five strikeouts versus Lackey.

Zobrist is 11 for 27 (.407) against him while Yunel Escobar is 8 for 15.

Rays at Red Sox: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (+108, 7.5)

                          Red Sox lead series 1-0.

The biggest worry for the Boston Red Sox prior to Game 1 of the American League Division Series was rust after taking four days off between games. That turned out to not be much of a concern in a 12-2 victory, and the Red Sox will look to take a commanding lead in the best-of-five series when they host Game 2 on Saturday. Tampa Bay finished second in the majors in fielding percentage but looked uncomfortable on defense in Game 1.

Rays left fielder Sean Rodriguez had trouble judging balls off the “Green Monster” and rookie Wil Myers let a fly ball drop on the warning track in deep right-center in Game 1, leading to big innings for the Red Sox. With right-hander John Lackey scheduled to start for Boston on Saturday, Tampa Bay will likely give Rodriguez the start off in Game 2. Every Red Sox starter recorded at least one hit in Game 1, and seven different players had at least one RBI.

                          TV: 5:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-60s with partly cloudy skies. Wind will blow in from CF at 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH David Price (10-8, 3.33 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH John Lackey (10-13, 3.52)

Price pitched Tampa Bay into the playoffs by holding the Texas Rangers to two runs on seven hits in a complete game on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs in each of his last five starts, including over eight innings against the Red Sox on Sept. 10. Price is 1-3 with a 3.96 ERA in his postseason career but came out of the bullpen against Boston in the 2008 ALCS, including closing out a Game 7 win.

Lackey last pitched at Colorado on Sept. 24 and struggled to a 4.98 ERA in five starts over the final month of the regular season. The veteran faced Tampa Bay twice in 2013 and was knocked around for nine runs on 19 hits in 10 total innings. Lackey is making his first postseason appearance since 2009, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels, and is 3-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 14 career playoff games - 12 starts.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 5-0 in Price's last five road starts vs. Red Sox.
                          * Under is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings in Boston.
                          * Red Sox are 4-1 in their last five games with umpire Eric Cooper behind home plate.
                          * Under is 6-2 in Lackeys last eight starts vs. American League East.

                          WALK-OFFS:

                          1. Red Sox backup C David Ross is 2-for-5 with two home runs in his career against Price and is expected to catch Lackey on Saturday.

                          2. Myers is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in the last three games.

                          3. Boston has recorded 41 straight stolen bases without being caught.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Francisco Liriano started 2013 with his right arm in a cast and his star-crossed career in flux.

A freak accident while goofing off with his kids on Christmas Day left Liriano's verbal agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates in doubt. Suddenly, the fresh start Liriano desperately needed appeared iffy.

``I didn't think I was going to play this year,' Liriano said.

Pittsburgh stuck with Liriano, signing him at a discount. They Pirates were assured his right arm would heal and his left arm - the one rebuilt during Tommy John surgery in 2007 - would turn out to be a perfect fit at PNC Park.

``If A.J. (Burnett) was going to be our one, he could be our two,' manager Clint Hurdle said. ``Where that two went, how high it played, I don't think any of us knew.'

Higher, it turns out, than Liriano or his perpetually optimistic manager imagined.

Ten months after wondering when - and where - he would pitch again, Liriano can give the resilient Pirates the lead in the NL division series on Sunday when they face St. Louis and right-hander Joe Kelly in Game 3.

Following a 16-8 regular season in which he evolved into Pittsburgh's de facto ace, Liriano became a part of franchise lore in a 6-2 victory over Cincinnati in the NL wild-card game on Tuesday. Overpowering the Reds in front of a black-clad crowd aching for postseason success after the Pirates' 21-year absence, Liriano delivered seven sublime innings that left the park in such a frenzy that fans couldn't figure out whether to chant his first name or his last - so separate chants of both broke out.

``Just trying to please the fans as much as I can,' Liriano said, ``be myself and make some good pitches and just give them the win they want.'

One Liriano may have wanted even more. An All Star as a 22-year-old with the Minnesota Twins in 2006, Liriano has spent the better part of a decade searching for the form that made him one of the most electrifying lefties. He underwent reconstructive elbow surgery on Nov. 6, 2006, needed more than a year to recover and then worked five middling seasons that made him look more like a cautionary tale than a potential postseason hero.

Pittsburgh is willing to take fliers on players who flamed out elsewhere. It didn't work out in 2012 when Erik Bedard signed a one-year deal only to be cut loose in late-August.

Liriano's broken arm may have turned out to be a blessing. Forced to prepare for the season slowly while his right arm healed, Liriano sent a jolt through the staff when he arrived in mid-May. His slider and breaking ball made more potent by a tweak in his delivery and a fastball that has resumed topping out in the mid-90s, Liriano has been devastating at PNC Park, where long fly balls to left field become innocuous outs.

After making quick work of the Reds, Liriano is 9-1 with a 1.43 ERA at home this season, including a pair of wins over the Cardinals.

``We have a game plan we'll take into tomorrow,' St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. ``We understand he's a good pitcher. We also realize we have a very good lineup.'

And a guy on the hill who hardly seems concerned by the circumstances. Moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation in July, Kelly went 10-5 with a 2.69 ERA even as Matheny experimented with the 25-year-old's role. He worked at least five innings in each of his last 15 outings, and the Cardinals were a remarkable 12-3 when he started, one of the main reasons they were able to hold off the Pirates in a hotly contested playoff race.

Like Pittsburgh star Gerrit Cole, Kelly appears immune to pressure. He made seven appearances out of the bullpen during the Cardinals' run to the NL championship series last fall and seemed to enjoy the heckling he received from the San Francisco fans while warming up a few feet from the stands.

``That's what playoff baseball is all about,' Kelly said. ``You dream about it as a little kid. It's going to be a great time. The atmosphere is going to be electric, obviously and I think our side is looking forward to it.'

Then again, the Cardinals don't really have a choice.

Pittsburgh has come alive during the franchise's unexpected revival. People stood on the Roberto Clemente Bridge behind the outfield wall during the wild-card game, eager to be a part of something not seen in a generation.

It's a resurgence that worked in lock-step with Liriano's emergence as the face of a pitching staff that is threatening to turn a simple ``feel good' story into something significantly more substantial.

``You have to give him credit for the heart, the conviction, the intent that he put into everything,' Hurdle said. ``That is what really, I think, has given that degree of separation from what we might have thought we were going to get to what he has actually done and performed and shown himself capable of.'

NOTES: The Pirates sent RHP Duke Welker to Minnesota to complete the Aug. 31 trade for 1B Justin Morneau. The Pirates also sent OF Alex Presley to the Twins.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers are about to find out if their $36 million investment in Hyun-Jin Ryu pays off in the postseason.

The 26-year-old rookie pitcher from South Korea will start Sunday night in the Dodgers' first home playoff game since 2009. Los Angeles is looking to take control of the best-of-five National League division series after splitting the first two games in Atlanta.

The Braves are turning to their own rookie, 22-year-old Julio Teheran.

Ryu isn't a typical rookie, having brought a wealth of experience from his native country when he signed with the Dodgers last winter. Teheran more accurately fits the description, with just four major league starts under his belt before this season.

Both the left-handed Ryu and right-handed Teheran went 14-8 during the regular season.

Teheran will be facing the Dodgers for the first time. Ryu made two regular-season starts against the Braves, both no-decisions. He gave up one run in 7 2-3 innings the last time he faced Atlanta on June 7.

Ryu threw a bullpen session Friday in Atlanta, something he rarely did during the regular season. He hasn't pitched since Sept. 29.

``Typically when I rest longer than normal, I always squeeze in a bullpen just to make sure that my body is responding the way I want it to,' he said Saturday through a translator.

Ryu drew an audience for the session that included manager Don Mattingly, and Stan Conte and Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the team's medical staff. Ryu missed a turn in early September because of a back ailment and went 2-5 with a 3.30 ERA over his final seven starts.

But Mattingly said there were no concerns about Ryu's health.

``He's been pitching big all year long,' Mattingly said. ``He's able to exploit anybody that we want.'

The Dodgers signed Ryu to a six-year deal, making him the first player to go from the Korean Baseball Organization to the major leagues. They landed him after bidding $25.7 million to win exclusive negotiating rights with him. Besides his seven seasons in the KBO, he pitched in the 2009 World Baseball Classic at Dodger Stadium as a reliever.

Ryu has the support of ace Clayton Kershaw, who pitched the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory in the series opener.

``We don't consider him a rookie,' Kershaw said. ``The way he carries himself every day, we're really not worried about composure or the adrenaline getting to him, or anything like that. He has such a great feel for his four pitches.'

A.J. Ellis has caught Ryu all season long, with Ryu learning enough English to communicate during games.

``He never gets frazzled or out of sorts,' Ellis said. ``He's a guy who thrives in the big moment. This is definitely not going to be the biggest game he's ever pitched.'

It may be among the most watched, though, because Game 3 will be seen in South Korea.

``It's a huge motivation to know that an entire country's going to be watching the game,' Ryu said. ``But equally important is the fans here at Dodger Stadium and the Korean community here. I understand there are going to be a lot of them coming out tomorrow, but it's a big encouragement for me.'

Like Mattingly with Ryu, Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez won't approach Teheran any differently just because he's making his postseason debut.

``I wouldn't even bring it up or anything,' Gonzalez said. ``He's going to go out and he's going to compete like he always has. If he gets his fastball command and throws the secondary pitches, he's going to be OK.'

Teheran, who is from Colombia, came into his own this season after fleeting appearances in the majors the previous two years. He had a 2.97 ERA in the second half for the Braves, the only division winner to have a losing road record at 40-41.

``I feel really excited about this game,' Teheran said. ``I never thought that I'm going to be in this situation this year in my first year. But I'm just trying to calm down myself and be focused on the game and try to do the same thing I've been doing.'
