  • Preview: Angels (78-81) at Rangers (88-71)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
    Date: September 27, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

After taking the opener of this four-game set in thrilling fashion, the Texas Rangers enter the weekend sitting just outside the AL wild-card picture.

If his efforts against the Los Angeles Angels are any indication, Alexi Ogando could give them a chance to climb in.

Looking to stay unbeaten versus Los Angeles, Ogando tries to help the Rangers keep pace in the playoff chase Friday night.

After sweeping Houston by a combined 22-5 score, Texas (88-71) won 6-5 on Thursday on Jurickson Profar's pinch-hit walkoff homer. Winners in nine of 11 in the series, the Rangers have posted five consecutive home victories over the Angels (78-81), with the last four all coming on walkoff homers.

"It's definitely weird, four walk-offs in a row," said Angels reliever Michael Kohn, who is now responsible for two of those shots. "It's not the ballpark. It's just a matter of executing pitches."

Texas, which set a club record with four errors in the second inning, remains one game behind Cleveland for the second wild-card spot and two in back of Tampa Bay.

"We're alive another day," Thursday's starter Matt Garza said. "That's what we're playing for right now. We're just playing to get in any way we can do it."

The Rangers now turn to Ogando (7-4, 2.93 ERA), who is 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 23 games - five starts - against the Angels. He has held Josh Hamilton hitless in six at_bats in their matchups.

Ogando has shined in two starts since rejoining the rotation last week. After allowing one run and two hits in five innings to beat the Rays 7-1 on Sept. 17, the right-hander gave up two hits over seven scoreless innings opposite James Shields in Sunday's 4-0, 10-inning loss at Kansas City.

"It doesn't matter who I'm facing. I'm competing with the batters," he said through an interpreter. "They are the only ones I can compete with. It doesn't matter what anybody else is doing."

The Angels counter with C.J. Wilson (17-7, 3.36), who had gone 9-0 during a 13-start stretch before falling 3-2 to Seattle on Sunday. The left-hander allowed all three runs and struck out nine in 8 1-3 innings.

Wilson, whose 17 wins are a career high, has now recorded four consecutive 200-inning campaigns.

"As a starter, you're trying to go out there and make all your starts and throw as many innings as you can," he told MLB's official website. "That's your job, so I'm just out there doing my job.

"The wins that I had this year and the innings, strikeouts and all that stuff, that's for fantasy baseball players. Real baseball players are concerned about winning for the team."

Wilson, who spent the first seven seasons of his career with Texas before joining the Angels in 2012, is 1-2 with a 7.92 ERA in seven starts against his former team. Ian Kinsler is 8 for 16 with four extra-base hits in their matchups, and Alex Rios is 8 for 19 with two homers.

Kinsler is batting .387 with a homer and seven runs during an eight-game hitting streak. He has also hit safely in seven straight in the series.

Despite Thursday's loss, Los Angeles is 16-5 in its last 21 road games. The Angels are 23-10 overall since Aug. 23.

    • Preview: Royals (84-75) at White Sox (62-97)
      Game: 2
      Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
      Date: September 27, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Kansas City Royals were recently eliminated from postseason contention.

The Chicago White Sox have been out for a much longer time.

Friday night will still feature an outstanding pitching matchup, however, as James Shields seeks his 100th career win against Chris Sale and the host White Sox.

Their first two matchups turned into pitchers' duels, but Sale and Shields haven't squared off since May 6.

Sale (11-13, 2.97 ERA) pitched 7 2-3 scoreless innings and Tyler Flowers homered off Shields in Chicago's 1-0 victory over the Royals on opening day.

On May 6, Shields (12-9, 3.21) tossed two-hit ball over eight scoreless innings, but the White Sox tied it in the ninth and won 2-1 in the 11th.

Sale has allowed two runs in 24 innings against Kansas City this year.

Shields is not far behind with a 2.18 ERA over five 2013 starts against Chicago.

Both pitchers have been outstanding of late.

Shields has won eight of his last 12 starts, posting a 3.15 ERA.

He fell short in his bid to win a third straight start Sunday despite pitching eight scoreless innings against Texas. The Royals were held off the scoreboard until Justin Maxwell's 10th-inning walkoff grand slam.

Shields' start was particularly impressive, given the liner he absorbed from David Murphy in the second inning.

"You can probably see the big bump in my elbow," Shields said. "I had a hard time feeling the baseball the whole rest of the game. It's just one of those games, one of those moments where I wasn't coming out of the game."

Sale limited Detroit to four hits with seven strikeouts in 7 2-3 scoreless innings Saturday, but the White Sox blew a six-run lead in the ninth before falling 7-6 in 12.

The left-hander is 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA in his last nine starts, with 14 of the 25 runs he allowed during that span coming in the two losses.

Sale has been susceptible to the home run lately, serving up nine in his last 43 2-3 innings after offering up eight in his previous 125 1-3.

Shields and Sale will both pitch to slumping lineups.

The White Sox (62-97) have scored eight runs over three straight losses, including a 3-2 defeat to the Royals Thursday. Five of those runs came via the solo home run.

Chicago, which has dropped 21 of 27, needs one win in its remaining three games to avoid finishing with 100 losses for the first time since 1970.

"You don't want to lose 100," said Paul Konerko, who homered Thursday. "You don't want to put that on a team next year."

The Royals (84-75) have slumped as well, batting .202 with three homers over their last seven games.

One night after picking up their 84th win for the first time since 1993, the Royals seek their 85th victory for the first time since 1989.

"The first time in 20 years we've won this many games, that's pretty good, too,' manager Ned Yost said. "They're all pushing. They all want to finish strong."

      • Preview: Indians (89-70) at Twins (66-93)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Target Field
        Date: September 27, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Corey Kluber's return helped vault the Cleveland Indians into the AL's second wild-card spot.

The surging Indians look to close in on a postseason berth and win their fifth straight start with Kluber on the mound when they continue their season-ending four-game set with the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

Thursday night began comfortably in Cleveland's favor as the Indians (89-70) took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth at Target Field, but struggling Chris Perez gave up four runs, including Josmil Pinto's two-run home run to draw the Twins (66-93) within one.

"Like the way they finished and got after it," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Just needed one more hit."

Texas, a game behind Cleveland, applied further pressure with Jurickson Profar's walk-off home run in the Rangers' 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Joe Smith, though, kept the Indians' margin with a strikeout with the tying run on second and the winning run on first.

Cleveland can clinch a share of the second wild-card spot Friday with a win and a Texas loss.

What it will take for Perez, with a 7.52 ERA since August, to keep his job is less clear.

"You know what? I think we'll always figure out a way to win. That's kind of the way I always view it," manager Terry Francona said.

Since missing a month with a sprained finger on his pitching hand, Kluber (10-5, 3.61 ERA) is 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA in four starts.

Perhaps more important, his return has coincided with a 14-5 run by the Indians, who won their seventh straight Thursday.

Much like his team, Kluber has taken advantage of weak opposition of late, beating the Mets, the White Sox and Houston in his last four starts.

The right-hander held the Astros to two runs in 5 1-3 innings with six strikeouts in a 9-2 win Sunday.

"I don't know if I feel quite as good as I did before," Kluber told the team's official website. "I felt better today than I had the last couple times out."

Of the six innings he started, Kluber gave up four leadoff hits, including the fourth, when he got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam with a single run allowed.

"I still think he's not in midseason form as far as his command," Francona said. "But he still competes. You saw what he gave us. I just think he's still kind of clawing his way back."

Kluber pitched five scoreless innings at Minnesota on July 20 after entering that game with a 5.57 ERA in four prior matchups.

Michael Brantley has three hits in four consecutive games - the first Indian to accomplish that feat since Kenny Lofton in 1995 - and is batting .500 during a 10-game hitting streak.

With three hits Friday, he'd be the first Indian since Ken Keltner in 1939 to record three-plus hits in five straight games.

The last major leaguer with five consecutive three-hit games was George Brett in 1976.

Minnesota's Pedro Hernandez (3-2, 6.05) is coming off one of his worst starts of the season, yielding six runs and eight hits in two innings of a 9-1 loss to Oakland on Saturday.

"Hernandez basically centered the baseball and they made him pay," Gardenhire said.

The left-hander has had his issues in two starts against Cleveland this season, posting a 6.10 ERA with 10 walks in 10 1-3 innings. He did, however, earn a 5-3 victory at Progressive Field on June 23, overcoming six walks to allow two runs in five innings.

        • Preview: Yankees (82-77) at Astros (51-108)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Minute Maid Park
          Date: September 27, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Already haven given legendary closer Mariano Rivera a fitting send-off, little is left for the New York Yankees to accomplish as their disappointing season winds to a close.

A win Friday night, however, would extend the Houston Astros' losing streak to their longest in franchise history.

New York hits the road looking to hand Houston its 13th consecutive defeat.

The Yankees (82-77) continue to limp to the finish following a 4-0 home loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, completing a three-game sweep in which they were outscored 19-3. It was also their ninth loss in 12 contests.

But Rivera's final home appearance provided a highlight in what has been a roller-coaster year for the Yankees.

Rivera, who came on in the eighth with one out, retired all four batters he faced before teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte came to the mound to remove him instead of manager Joe Girardi, setting the stage for an emotional farewell.

"I was bombarded with emotions and feelings," Rivera said. "Everything hit. I knew that's the last time. Period."

Houston has planned a pregame ceremony for Sunday's contest that will include former Yankees manager Joe Torre as well as Roger Clemens. Rivera has thrown 5 1-3 shutout innings over six career appearances against the Astros, converting all five save opportunities.

Girardi said prior to Thursday's game that he may let Rivera play center field for an inning during the series.

"In my mind, thinking that he's going to want to pitch, it would be a situation that I might bring him in (in) the eighth to play the outfield and close him out in the ninth if we have that opportunity," Girardi said.

Before honoring Rivera, however, the Astros (51-108) are trying to avoid what would be the longest losing streak in club history. While the Yankees have struggled lately, they're 10-2 all-time against Houston and took two of three in New York from April 29-May 1.

Houston's 7-3 defeat at Texas on Wednesday established a single-season franchise record for losses and baseball's most since 111 by Arizona in 2004.

"It's not fun at all. We go out there and want to win, but it's not happening. We're going to have to fix things and come back stronger next year," center fielder Brandon Barnes said. "I believe in the guys in this clubhouse, and there are guys coming up who can do the job."

Rookie left-hander Brett Oberholtzer (4-4, 2.71 ERA) figures to give the Astros a chance, though he'll need more offense behind him. He's lost his last three starts despite a 2.50 ERA, receiving three runs of support over 18 innings.

His last defeat - in a 2-1 final at Cleveland last Friday - came despite the fact that he didn't surrender an earned run in six innings. Instead, three errors contributed to two unearned runs.

"If we made a couple of defensive plays, we arguably could be standing here with a 1-0 victory," manager Bo Porter told the team's official website. "He pitched that well. He continues to grind and make pitches and give us big performances."

The Yankees have yet to name a starter since moving Pettitte's scheduled start to Saturday.

Ichiro Suzuki is batting .460 in 11 career games against the Astros and went 5 for 9 in two meetings earlier this year.

          • Cubs (66-93) at Cardinals (94-65)
            Game: 1
            Venue: Busch Stadium
            Date: September 27, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping to become the third playoff-bound club to celebrate against the Chicago Cubs in less than a week.

Having already secured a third consecutive trip to the postseason, the Cardinals look to wrap up their first NL Central title in four years Friday night when they host their division rivals.

St. Louis (94-65) was off Thursday, a day after locking up at least a tie for the division crown with a 4-1 victory over Washington.

The Cardinals, a season-high 29 games above .500, can clinch their first Central title since 2009 with one victory in this three-game set or one loss by Pittsburgh in its series at Cincinnati this weekend. They're also battling Atlanta for the league's best record and home-field advantage through the NL playoffs.

"It feels like we're in a fight," manager Mike Matheny told the MLB's official website. "We show up here every day excited and anxious. Can't wait to get out here and watch our guys do their thing and watch it play out."

After watching the Braves win to capture the NL East title on Sunday and having Pittsburgh clinch a playoff berth at Wrigley Field the following evening, the last-place Cubs (66-93) would like to spoil the Cardinals' party plans.

They'll give the ball to All-Star Travis Wood (9-11, 2.98 ERA), who ranks eighth in the NL in ERA and fifth in opponent batting average (.218).

Wood helped delay Atlanta's division-clinching celebration, yielding one run and striking out seven in seven-plus innings Saturday before the Cubs rallied to win 3-1.

"I don't think any team looks forward to (seeing an opponent clinch)," said Wood, who has a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts as he's faced playoff-bound teams Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Atlanta.

The left-hander has been particularly tough in his past five outings on the road, going 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA. However, he's 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in three starts against St. Louis since mid-June.

Yadier Molina is 10 for 23 with three homers against Wood over the past three seasons, and the All-Star catcher is hitting .432 with three home runs versus the Cubs this year.

Jon Jay, 9 for 21 lifetime off Wood, enters on an 11-game hitting streak during which he's batted .362. Matt Carpenter needs two hits to become the first St. Louis player to collect 200 since Albert Pujols in 2003.

Lance Lynn (14-10, 4.09) will try to become the Cardinals' third 15-game winner of 2013, joining Adam Wainwright and Shelby Miller.

Lynn has followed a five-game losing streak by going 1-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his last three starts, striking out 21 in 18 2-3 innings. However, he's 1-3 in four starts against the Cubs this year and has lost the last two, allowing nine runs and 15 hits in 11 innings.

While Wellington Castillo is 4 for 6 with a homer against Lynn this year, Anthony Rizzo has gone hitless in 11 at_bats.

The Cubs, losers in 11 of 15, could be opening their final series under manager Dale Sveum, who doesn't know if he'll be back for a third season despite being under contract for 2014.

"That's part of the gig," Sveum said, "is knowing the day after the season."

The Cardinals have won 16 of 20 at home but are 4-3 there this year against Chicago. St. Louis leads the season series 9-7.

            • Preview: Nationals (84-75) at Diamondbacks (80-79)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Chase Field
              Date: September 27, 2013 9:40 PM EDT

While Patrick Corbin has enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2013, he's fallen off the pace down the stretch.

Stephen Strasburg has been steady all season, but he doesn't have much to show for it.

Corbin and Strasburg match up in their final starts of the year Friday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game home set against the Washington Nationals.

Leading the team in wins, innings pitched (203 1-3) and strikeouts (171), Corbin (14-7, 3.28 ERA) has emerged as the Diamondbacks' ace in his first full season in the majors. The left-hander, who was named to the NL All-Star team, tied the franchise record for consecutive wins to open a season by going 9-0 with a 2.06 ERA in his first 11 starts.

Corbin, though, has since gone 5-7 with a 3.98 ERA, including 1-4 with a 7.84 ERA in his last six outings.

"He just doesn't have a lot of life on his pitches right now," manager Kirk Gibson told MLB's official website.

After allowing six runs over two-plus innings in the shortest start of his career Sept. 17 in a 9-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Corbin surrendered four runs and a career-high 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings Sunday in a 13-9 win at Colorado.

"I left some breaking balls up today, I thought it was my worst all year," he said. "My slider is not as sharp right now. I know that and I'm just not as consistent with it. I don't know why."

Corbin is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in two starts versus Washington (84-75). He yielded two runs in seven innings opposite Strasburg in a 3-2, 11-inning road win June 27.

After getting shut down early last season, Strasburg (7-9, 3.02) has struck out 187 over a career-high 176 innings while posting a .206 opponents' batting average, among the lowest marks in baseball.

Despite those numbers, Strasburg will head into the offseason with a losing record. The Nationals have provided him with a combined 11 runs of support in his defeats, though.

"I think for me, there's a lot of things that I've learned this year," he said. "A lot of improvements to be made. And I'm going to work harder than I did the last offseason, and that's all you can really do."

Strasburg, 2-0 in his last eight outings, gave up three runs over six innings in a 5-4 walkoff win over Miami in the back end of Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out six to become the third-fastest player to 500, doing so in 426 1-3 innings. Only former Cubs' starters Kerry Wood (404 2-3 innings) and Mark Prior (421 2-3) were quicker.

Strasburg is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts versus Arizona (80-79), which just dropped three of four at San Diego by a combined 20-7 score. Martin Prado hit a two-run homer in Thursday's 3-2, 11-inning defeat.

Paul Goldschmidt singled and scored, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. The first baseman, batting .406 with five homers and 17 RBIs during that stretch, is hitting .395 with a homer and nine RBIs in his last 10 games versus Washington.

The Nationals are hoping to avoid losing four straight for the first time since Aug. 4-7 after getting swept at St. Louis this week. Washington managed one run in the final two games of that set, falling 4-1 in Wednesday's finale.

"There's pride that comes into it when you play these games," manager Davey Johnson said. "This club is used to being a spoiler but we didn't play that well."

Washington has taken six of eight from Arizona.

              • Preview: Athletics (94-65) at Mariners (70-89)
                Game: 1
                Venue: Safeco Field
                Date: September 27, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

A day off couldn't have come at a better time for an Oakland Athletics team that went on a tear for the last month to clinch its second consecutive AL West title while staying in the hunt for the league's best record.

Manager Bob Melvin hopes the extra rest helps reverse their fortunes against the Seattle Mariners, who host Friday night's series opener seeking to beat the A's for the fifth time in six tries.

Oakland (94-65) lost the final two of a three-game set with Seattle, then went 23-8 from Aug. 23-Sept. 23 and clinched the West crown. The A's, though, fell 3-0 on Tuesday and 3-1 on Wednesday to conclude a three-game set with the Los Angeles Angels after averaging 9.8 runs during a five-game winning streak.

Melvin cited fatigue after Oakland's trying stretch to secure the division title. The A's trail Boston, which ends its season with a three-game series against Baltimore, by two games for the AL's best record, and they have a one-game edge on Detroit for home-field advantage in a possible Division Series matchup.

"It felt like we were a little bit tired these last couple of days, playing 33 of 34 (days)," Melvin said. "Usually you don't want an off day when you're playing well, but I think (Thursday) could be a good time for one."

Oakland has lost 10 of 16 meetings with the Mariners (70-89) this season while posting a 5.28 ERA in the last five against a team that ranks last in the AL with a .238 average.

"I think, record-wise, they've played us as tough as anybody," Melvin said. "It's been a team that's matched well against us, and we're going to have to play good to beat them. They've been a challenge for us."

It might be even more difficult with Seattle sending Felix Hernandez (12-9, 2.99 ERA) to the mound Friday. He's won both of his starts while pitching 14 2-3 scoreless innings against Oakland this season, striking out eight in each outing.

Hernandez was sidelined with a strained left oblique for nearly three weeks before giving up one run and striking out 10 in just four innings of Seattle's 3-2 win over the Angles on Sunday.

"We're going to keep a close eye," manager Eric Wedge said. "We could have sent him out one more inning, but that wouldn't have been the smart thing to do as far as I'm concerned."

The right-hander needs to last 1 2-3 innings Friday to finish with his sixth straight season of at least 200.

"It's important to me," Hernandez said. "That's why they have me here, to pitch, right? Every year, I try to reach 200 or more."

The Mariners have won three of four after beating Kansas City 6-0 on Wednesday, and they'll try to stay hot against Bartolo Colon, who has been on a roll of late.

Colon (17-6, 2.64) has won his last three starts and has a 0.90 ERA over his past five after giving up five hits in six innings of an 11-0 victory over Minnesota last Friday.

The 40-year-old right-hander is tied with Detroit's Anibal Sanchez for the AL's best ERA and is tied for second in the league in wins with the Angels' C.J. Wilson.

"He's been talking about getting his second wind," Melvin said. "We're seeing the movement and the velocity coming back."

Colon is 3-0 with a 1.76 ERA in his last four starts against the Mariners, giving up three runs in eight innings of a 6-3 victory the last time he faced them June 21.

                • Preview: Rockies (72-87) at Dodgers (91-68)
                  Game: 1
                  Venue: Dodger Stadium
                  Date: September 27, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Clayton Kershaw has had very few bad starts in 2013.

After successfully shutting down one team that had bothered him all season last weekend, the ace left-hander will look to avenge another as he leads the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Colorado Rockies in Friday night's series opener.

Kershaw (15-9, 1.88 ERA) is on pace to finish the year with baseball's lowest ERA since Houston's Roger Clemens closed 2005 at 1.87. The favorite for the NL Cy Young Award, Kershaw leads the league with 224 strikeouts, and will likely become the first Dodger pitcher with a sub-two ERA since Sandy Koufax's 1.73 in 1966.

Kershaw has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 11 of 12 starts since the All-Star break. The lone exception came Sept. 2, when he yielded season highs of five runs and 11 hits in five innings against the Rockies (72-87).

Kershaw has returned to his usual self since, posting a 1.71 ERA in three starts. Pitching on seven days' rest Saturday, he tossed seven innings of three-hit ball in a 4-0 win over a San Diego team responsible for three of his losses this season.

"I felt good, so I guess that's a bonus," said Kershaw, whose next start will come in Game 1 of the NL division series on Thursday. "A little bit erratic at first with the fastball but (catcher A.J. Ellis) did a real good job of making me use all my pitches on both sides of the plate."

The Rockies have done more than challenge Kershaw this month. They lead the majors with a .303 batting average in September, and have tallied at least nine hits in nine straight contests.

The retiring Todd Helton is batting .387 over a seven-game hitting streak with two home runs, six doubles and nine RBIs.

Despite their potent offense, a 5.84 team ERA in September has left the Rockies with an 8-14 record.

Scheduled starter Collin McHugh (0-3, 8.59) is among the struggling Colorado pitchers.

Acquired from the New York Mets in June, McHugh has yet to make much of a mark in Denver. The right-hander, shuttled back and forth between the minor leagues and the majors all season, has surrendered a .379 average, including a .421 clip to left-handed batters.

After allowing one run in five innings to St. Louis in his return to the major leagues on Sept. 16, he regressed Saturday, allowing six runs and a season-worst 11 hits in five innings of a 7-2 loss to Arizona.

"It was kind of disappointing, too many balls up in the middle of the plate," McHugh said. "I had success the last outing keeping the ball down and out of the middle of the plate. Today we got beat on a couple of big spots in the middle of the plate up."

The NL West champion Dodgers (91-68) have scored 13 runs over their last six games.

Despite three doubles and a triple, they left seven men on base in Thursday's 3-2 loss at San Francisco. They are 6 for 44 (.136) with runners in scoring position in their last six.

Yasiel Puig is 7 for his last 37 (.189) overall, but is batting .346 (9 for 26) against Colorado.

The Rockies are one of four major league teams with a winning record at Dodger Stadium this year, having won four of seven.

                  • Preview: Padres (75-84) at Giants (74-85)
                    Game: 1
                    Venue: AT&T Park
                    Date: September 27, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres are playing well as the season winds down, but their recent history at AT&T Park suggests it might not end as favorably.

San Diego needs a sweep to avoid losing the season series for a third straight year to the San Francisco Giants, whom they open a three-game set with on Friday night.

The Padres (75-84) have won 15 of 23 since Sept. 2, primarily due to reliable pitching. The staff has posted a collective 2.77 ERA over that span with the rotation providing 16 quality starts - including seven in a row after Robbie Erlin limited Arizona to two runs and three hits over seven innings of a 3-2, 11-inning win Thursday.

The bullpen has been just as strong, particularly over the last 13 games, yielding six earned runs in 36 1-3 innings.

Though San Diego has been one of baseball's worst road teams this year with a 30-48 record, the club has won five of its last seven away from home. San Francisco is a place the Padres have struggled, however, as they've gone 1-5 there this year while dropping 15 of 19 dating back to Aug. 24, 2011.

Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval have been instrumental in the Giants' success in the season series. Posey is 22 for 51 (.431) with two homers and 13 RBIs in 15 games, while Sandoval, who missed Thursday's 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with flu-like symptoms, is 22 for 54 (.407) with five home runs and 14 RBIs in 13 matchups.

The Giants (74-85) are a win away from clinching their third straight season series over the Padres, holding a 9-7 advantage this year.

San Diego rookie Burch Smith (1-2, 5.87 ERA) will be given his final chance to stake his claim to a potential spot in next year's rotation. He's 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts since being called up at the beginning of the month, though he's walked 11 in 18 innings.

"There's a delivery component he has to handle," manager Bud Black told the team's official website. "He has to repeat it. I think sometimes he gets out of it and that leads to trouble. Repeating his delivery, his arm slot and release point."

Ryan Vogelsong (3-6, 5.90) will oppose him, looking to end a five-start skid in which he's 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA, allowing 37 hits over 26 2-3 innings.

He matched a career worst by yielding three homers along with six runs and eight hits over five innings of a 6-4 loss at San Diego on April 28. He was 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four matchups with San Diego last year.

He was the loser in a 6-0 final against the New York Yankees on Saturday, surrendering five runs and five hits in five innings. Three runs came in the third after perfect first and second frames.

"It was upsetting for me from a mental standpoint," Vogelsong said. "I didn't have a good mental game."

San Diego outfielder Mark Kotsay - set to retire at the end of the season - was honored prior to the Padres' final home contest Thursday. He was 0 for 3 with a walk but is 3 for 7 off Vogelsong in his career.

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to handicap the final MLB weekend series
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major League Baseball enters its final weekend of the regular season with a few teams still jockeying for position in the playoffs.

Here is a look at the finals series and some notes to keep in mind to help with your capping.

                              American League

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

The Red Sox will be able to clinch the top spot in the American League playoffs if they handle their business and win in Baltimore, or Seattle plays spoilers with victories against Oakland. The Sox will mix in some rest for players as manager John Farrell is putting players' health first.

“It’s important for us to prioritize the health of our guys first,” Farrell said. “That’s where our depth continues to play out.”

The Sox head into the weekend with 96 wins while the A's have 94.

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays

The Rays are one of the hottest teams in the league, but still have yet to clinch a playoff spot. They head into Friday's action winners of seven straight and 12 of 15 overall. They finish up in Toronto and are 10-6 versus the Jays in 2013.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

The Rangers are still alive in the wild card chase but will be in tough as the Angels will look to foil any dreams the Texas club has of playing in October.

"We know the Angels have a great team but we've swept them before and we know it's not impossible," Rangers SS Elvis Andrus said. "Just keeping winning, that's our mindset right now. We're competing and that's what baseball is all about."

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox

The Royals made a valiant push for the postseason, but fell just short. The batting lineup flat lined when it mattered most as the Royals were shutout 4-0 and 6-0 by the Mariners earlier this week and found themselves on the outside looking in.

Alex Gordon believes KC will close out with winning baseball, but the Royals could be a deflated club.

"It's unfortunate, but we've got four more games and we're going to try to finish the season strong," Gordon said prior to Thursday's action.

                              Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins

The Tribe are very much alive and head into Thursday's matchup one game up on the Rangers for the wild card. They opened a four-game set in Minnesota and posted a 6-5 victory Thursday.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros

The Yanks are out. The 'Stros have lost 12-straight ball games.

                              Oakland A's at Seattle Mariners

The A's can take the AL's top spot if they can beat a tough Mariners squad and the Red Sox fail in Baltimore. The A's have earned F's versus the Mariners this season, however, posting a 6-10 record in 2013.

                              National League

Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets

The Mets have closed the season very positively and have won eight of their last 12 ball games. They've got a four-game set at home versus Milwaukee to close the season but dropped Game 1 4-2 Thursday night.

                              Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds

Both of these teams have clinched, but Pittsburgh is still eying the Central crown.

"We're still focused on the opportunity to win the division," manager Clint Hurdle told the team's official website. "If it turns out (winning the Central no longer is possible), we want to fight and take that (wild card) game back home."

                              Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

The Braves still have some work to do if they want to lock up home field advantage. But they are closing the season with a whimper. Prior to Thursday's game, the Braves were hitting .204 and are 9-12 in their last 21 ball games.

They temporarily remedied that slump with a 7-1 victory over the Phils Thursday.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

Heading into the weekend, the Cards' magic number to clinch the Central is one. They'll look to celebrate in front of the home crowd with the rival Cubbies in town.

                              Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks

The Nats were a little too late to the party as they played quite well down the stretch but fell short.

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have been in cruise control for some time and are 5-5 in their last 10 prior to Thursday's tilt with the Giants.

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants

These teams are relatively close in the win column and could use this series to finish ahead of the other.

                              Detroit Tigers at Miami Marlins

The Tigers clinched the AL Central and will mix in some rest for players to prepare for the playoffs.
