  • Preview: Dodgers (91-67) at Giants (73-85)
    Game: 3
    Venue: AT&T Park
    Date: September 26, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

While the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers have seen plenty of Tim Lincecum over the years, he could be making his final start in a San Francisco Giants uniform Thursday night.

Gearing up for their first playoff appearance in four seasons, the visiting Dodgers conclude a three-game set against Lincecum and the Giants.

Los Angeles (91-67) had won three in a row before falling 6-4 on Wednesday. Matt Kemp went 3 for 4 with two RBIs but Ricky Nolasco was outpitched by Barry Zito, who may have been making his final appearance with San Francisco (73-85), too.

The Giants now turn to Lincecum (10-14, 4.44 ERA), who is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, who threw his first career no-hitter July 13, is 20-29 with a 4.80 ERA in 64 starts since signing a $40.5 million contract prior to last season.

"There's going to be a time when I'm going to have to weigh my options," he told MLB's official website. "I've had a great time here with the Giants. I respect the organization and stuff. With that we'll see if the relationship goes further or not. I can't say that exactly right now.

"I have to see what's on the table before I dismiss anything."

Lincecum is 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA in his last six starts versus Los Angeles. He is 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA in nine career home outings against the Dodgers, though he hasn't faced them in San Francisco this year.

Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez are a combined 19 for 94 (.202) with no homers and 34 strikeouts in their matchups.

Lincecum saw his season-high four-game winning streak come to an end Friday in a 5-1 loss at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander surrendered four runs in 6 2-3 innings and is now one loss away from matching his career high set last year.

Lincecum struck out six to surpass 1,500 for his career.

"It's cool, but at the end of the day, I lost. That's what I'm thinking about," he said.

The Dodgers counter with Edinson Volquez (9-12, 5.77), who allowed two runs over 6 1-3 innings in Friday's 2-0 loss at San Diego, his former team. The right-hander dropped to 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in four starts since signing with Los Angeles on Aug. 30.

He has struck out 22 in as many innings during those outings, and he could be auditioning for the postseason roster.

"You usually don't use a fifth starter in the playoffs, unless you have him in the bullpen," manager Don Mattingly said. "We'll see. We'll talk about that when we get to roster time."

The Dodgers also have a decision to make about Andre Ethier, who returned to Southern California on Wednesday to have his injured left ankle re-examined. It is unclear if Ethier will be ready for the NL division series starting next week.

"I think you're always making plans with different scenarios," Mattingly said. "I'm a little worried about him."

Kemp is batting .405 with two homers, four doubles and 10 RBIs in his last nine games at AT&T Park.

Los Angeles has dropped 10 of 18 to San Francisco this season, including four of the last five by a 34-14 margin.

                    • Preview: Pirates (91-68) at Reds (90-69)
                      Game: 1
                      Venue: Great American Ball Park
                      Date: September 27, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

Nothing will convince manager Clint Hurdle that his Pittsburgh Pirates are out of the NL Central race until the mathematics no longer work in their favor.

Though the scenario is more likely this weekend's three-game set in Cincinnati will wind up determining the site of Tuesday's wild-card game between the Pirates and Reds, Hurdle still has his mind set on a possible division title heading into Friday's series opener.

Pittsburgh (91-68) trails first-place St. Louis by three games, and it will need to sweep Cincinnati and have the Cardinals drop all three to the last-place Chicago Cubs just to create a one-game playoff for the Central crown.

"We're still focused on the opportunity to win the division," Hurdle told the team's official website after the Pirates' 4-2 loss to the Cubs on Wednesday. "If it turns out (winning the Central no longer is possible), we want to fight and take that (wild card) game back home."

Pittsburgh, which locked up its first postseason berth since 1992 on Monday, would need to take two of three in this set to host that one-game playoff against the Reds (90-69), who were eliminated from the division race after falling 1-0 to the New York Mets on Wednesday.

A tie in the standings would give home-field advantage to Cincinnati based on head-to-head play, as the teams enter this series 8-8 against each other on the season.

Andrew McCutchen ranks near the top of the NL with a .318 average, but he's 3 for 24 over his last seven games and hitless in 14 straight at_bats against the Reds.

"We'll try to win a couple, and go from there," McCutchen said. "I'm happy just to have the opportunity (to be in the playoffs). I remember at the beginning of the season, no one gave us a chance, and now look where we are."

Cincinnati is heading to the postseason for the third time in four years, but it dropped the final two of a three-game series against the Mets after winning six of seven.

Manager Dusty Baker is focused on getting the wild-card contest at home, though the Reds have dropped four of six at Great American Ball Park.

"This team seems to take the hard road most of the time," Baker said. "It is very important to have the home-field advantage, but it's not impossible no matter where you play."

Baker's club had a difficult time solving A.J. Burnett on Saturday, and he'll be on the mound for the series opener.

Burnett (9-11, 3.39 ERA) beat the Reds as he struck out a season-best 12 while allowing two runs over seven innings in a 4-2 victory.

"I was locked in," Burnett said. "It was probably the best command of that hook I've had in a long time. I had a put-away pitch, and it's a lot different when you have those."

He's had 28 strikeouts in 18 2-3 innings while going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three outings against Cincinnati this season. The right-hander, though, is 2-5 with a 5.36 ERA in eight career starts in Cincinnati, and he has a 6.68 ERA in his last six outings on the road.

He'll again be opposed by Homer Bailey, who gave up four runs - two earned - and walked four in 5 2-3 innings while suffering his first loss in nearly two months Saturday.

Bailey (11-11, 3.40) went 6-0 with a 2.60 ERA over his previous nine outings overall and was 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA in his last four versus the Pirates, including a no-hitter Sept. 28, 2012.

Reds rookie Billy Hamilton, hitting .389 since making his debut Sept. 3, was successful in his first 13 stolen-base attempts before being caught Wednesday. He went 3 for 6 with two stolen bases against Pittsburgh in Sunday's 11-3 win.

                      • Preview: Red Sox (96-63) at Orioles (83-76)
                        Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards

The Boston Red Sox enter the final series of the season in prime position to claim home-field advantage in the AL playoffs.

Though their own playoff hopes have already evaporated, the Baltimore Orioles can still capture their second straight season series against the Red Sox for the first time in 21 years.

Boston visits Baltimore on Friday night with Clay Buchholz looking to bounce back from his lone loss.

The Red Sox pushed themselves two games ahead of Oakland for the league's best record and trimmed their magic number for home-field advantage to two following a 15-5 victory at Colorado on Wednesday. The Athletics end their season with three games in Seattle.

Will Middlebrooks provided two homers for a career-high seven RBIs Wednesday, including his third career grand slam. He's just 8 for 37 (.216) in 11 games versus Baltimore this year.

"It's good to see him in the stretch he's been in of late, to not only drive the ball out of the ballpark but stay on the ball and drive it out to right field," manager John Farrell said as one of Middlebrooks' homers went to the opposite field. "That's when we feel like he's got good plate coverage and he's at his best."

With a sweep, Boston (96-63) would match the fourth-best record in franchise history (1978).

The Red Sox would seem to have a good chance to add to their win total considering they're 13-2 in games Buchholz (11-1, 1.60 ERA) starts, but one of those defeats came against Toronto on Saturday. The right-hander yielded three runs in six innings of a 4-2 setback after allowing one run over 11 innings in winning his first two starts since a strained neck kept him out for more than three months.

But Buchholz seems to be finding his form, as his pitch counts have increased steadily from 74 to 91 to 106 since returning.

"I feel good. Movement on all the pitches is there," he said. "It's just the command and location and where to start it, which is sometimes hard to get better. The velocity is there and the body feels good."

Buchholz is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over his last three starts against Baltimore, including seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory on April 8. He's also 5-0 with a 0.95 ERA in five road starts overall this year.

The Orioles (83-76) are one win away from clinching the season series as they lead it 9-7 after taking two of three at Fenway last week. They haven't done so in two straight years since 1991-92.

Home run leader Chris Davis didn't play Thursday due to an illness but Baltimore took a 3-2 win over Toronto, the club's second in a row after a six-game skid. Davis has six homers and 14 RBIs in 16 meetings with Boston this year despite batting .226 with 27 strikeouts. He's 3 for 15 off Buchholz with one homer and six strikeouts.

Starting for the Orioles will be Scott Feldman (5-5, 3.57), who is 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA over his last eight starts. In Boston on Sept. 17, the right-hander gave up two runs and two hits in five innings but walked a career-high six and didn't get a decision in a 3-2 win.

Mike Napoli has been out of Boston's lineup for four straight games due to plantar fasciitis but Farrell told the team's official website he'll likely play first base Friday. He is 11 for 27 (.407) off Feldman with two home runs.

Jacoby Ellsbury was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs against Colorado on Wednesday after missing 16 contests with a fractured right foot. He's hitting .441 with five stolen bases during an eight-game hitting streak versus Baltimore.

The AL wild card-leading Tampa Bay Rays continue to inch closer to locking up a playoff spot.

The Toronto Blue Jays' R.A. Dickey, meanwhile, is set to conclude what's been a disappointing year.

Seeking a season high-tying eighth consecutive win, the visiting Rays have a chance to clinch Friday night in the first of three against the Blue Jays.

Evan Longoria stayed hot with two hits and three RBIs and Delmon Young hit a home run as Tampa Bay (90-69) swept the New York Yankees with Thursday's 4-0 road win. The Rays, who have outscored opponents 37-13 during their winning streak, lowered their magic number for securing a wild-card berth to two. They can clinch with a win and a Texas loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Tampa Bay has now posted four consecutive 90-win seasons for the first time in franchise history.

"That's outstanding, a great tribute to the organization from top to bottom," said manager Joe Maddon, whose team won eight straight July 4-11. "There's a really nice quiet confidence among them. ... They're really sniffing it, and that matters. And so you're seeing a higher level of mental play."

The Rays now turn their attention to Dickey (13-13, 4.27 ERA), who hasn't lived up to expectations in his first season with the Blue Jays.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, who had gone 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA in his previous five outings, struck out a season-high 11 and went the distance in Sunday's 5-2 loss at Boston.

Dickey surrendered his 32nd and 33rd homers, the second-most in the majors.

"He gives up fly balls, that's part of being a knuckleballer, but he threw a tremendous game if you take away the two home runs," manager John Gibbons told MLB's official website. "The problem is you can't take away the two home runs."

Dickey's complete game was his third of the year.

"I had a good knuckleball, I've had a good knuckleball for quite some time and I expected better from what I felt and what I saw the ball doing."

Dickey is 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in six matchups against the Rays since last year. He has baffled several of their hitters, including Ben Zobrist (2 for 19), Desmond Jennings (1 for 16), Luke Scott (1 for 13), Jose Molina (0 for 10) and rookie Wil Myers (0 for 6).

Tampa Bay counters with Jeremy Hellickson (12-9, 5.16), who threw 2 1-3 scoreless innings of relief and earned the win last Friday in a 5-4, 18-inning victory over Baltimore.

The right-hander, though, was hit hard in his last start, surrendering five runs before exiting with two outs in the third inning of a 7-1 loss to Texas on Sept. 17. His ERA ranks third-highest in all of baseball among qualified pitchers.

"It's been a back-and-forth battle with him," Maddon said. "Even in games he's won, there have been a lot of runs scored. It's just been awkward with him. He just hasn't been as steady as he's been in the past. Why? I don't really know. ... I don't have any solid answers."

Hellickson is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA during a six-start stretch versus Toronto. Brett Lawrie is 1 for 19 in their matchups.

Lawrie, 1 for his last 19, is hitting .185 in 13 games against the Rays this year.

Longoria is batting .374 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 29 games in the series since last season. He is 7 for 13 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last three games overall.

Tampa Bay has won 24 of 33 against Toronto.

                            Game: 1
                            Venue: Marlins Park
                            Date: September 27, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

While the Detroit Tigers can set their sights on securing home-field advantage in their AL division series, Jhonny Peralta looks to make a bid to be part of the team when it gets there.

Peralta is expected to make his return to the newly crowned AL Central champions Friday night when they visit the Miami Marlins.

Detroit (93-66) had Thursday off after Max Scherzer picked up his major league-best 21st win and the defending league champions wrapped up another division crown with a 1-0 victory at Minnesota on Wednesday.

"For us to be able to do it three straight years now is really special and a testament to the talent in our clubhouse," said Scherzer, who allowed two hits over seven innings.

Detroit trails West champion Oakland by one game for the league's second-best record and home-field advantage in the ALDS. The Tigers also have a slim chance to catch Boston for baseball's best mark overall.

Following a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal, Peralta will rejoin the Tigers as they open a three-game set against the NL-worst Marlins (59-100).

The All-Star shortstop has hit .305 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs, but might have to impress at his new position to earn a place on the postseason roster. Peralta, hitting .420 in interleague games, has been working out in left field because the Tigers acquired shortstop Jose Iglesias from Boston shortly before the suspension.

"(Peralta) has worked hard, eager to get back," general manager Dave Dombrowski told the team's official website. "The team has been receptive to him coming back, and we think it's best for the ball club to give him the opportunity."

While Iglesias hasn't started since he was hit on the left hand Sept. 19, he's hoping to return to the lineup Friday. Iglesias is batting .310 overall but in a 2-for-18 slump.

The Tigers, 12-5 in interleague play, have averaged 7.5 runs and hit .339 while winning eight in a row against NL opponents. That streak matches the team record set during the 2010 season.

Former Marlin Miguel Cabrera, who has never faced the team with which he broke into the majors, is batting .371 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in interleague contests. Cabrera tops baseball with a .345 average but can no longer win a second straight Triple Crown, having hit one homer in his last 23 games to fall well behind Baltimore's Chris Davis for the major league lead.

Rick Porcello was scheduled to start this game as a postseason tuneup for the Tigers, but they switched to rookie Jose Alvarez (1-4, 5.50 ERA) on Friday morning.

Alvarez has been pitching out of the Detroit bullpen over the past month, including a scoreless inning at Minnesota on Monday in his most recent appearance. The left-hander started his first five games in the majors following his call-up in early June and lost each of the last three, getting tagged for 11 runs and 18 hits in 14 1-3 innings.

The good news for Alvarez is that he's facing a Miami team which has scored 2.6 runs per game and batted .229 while dropping 14 of 20. The Marlins rank last in the majors in both offensive categories.

Tom Koehler (4-10, 4.45) takes the mound for Miami.

A week after going eight innings in a 1-0, 12-inning loss to the Mets, Koehler saw his eight-start winless streak end Sunday when he limited Washington to two runs over six frames in a 4-2 victory.

The right-hander, 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in four interleague starts, will try to cool off a Detroit team that has won 11 of 15.

"This is a good experience for us," Koehler told MLB's official website. "Obviously, we're not in (the playoffs). But to get to play against teams who are playing for something, that means something."

This is the first meeting since 2004 when the Tigers took two of three in Detroit.

The Milwaukee Brewers seem to enjoy facing the New York Mets on the road.

Having Carlos Gomez back may keep it that way.

Gomez is scheduled to return from his suspension Friday night when the Brewers attempt to continue their success at Citi Field.

Milwaukee (72-87) has won eight of nine visits to Flushing after taking the opener of this four-game set 4-2 on Thursday.

The Brewers won despite being without Gomez, who was serving a one-game suspension for inciting a benches-clearing brawl with Atlanta in Wednesday's 4-0 victory.

The center fielder is expected back in the lineup, and that should provide a lift. He leads Milwaukee with a career-high 23 homers and his 71 RBIs are a personal best.

That power and production has been on display over the past nine games. He's only 7 for 32 (.219) in that stretch, but has four homers, a double, triple and eight RBIs.

Milwaukee looks to win for the fifth time in six games overall as it sends Yovani Gallardo (11-10, 4.23 ERA) to the mound.

The right-hander has been impressive since returning from a strained left hamstring, going 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in seven starts.

He had been 2-3 with a 7.22 ERA over his previous seven outings.

Gallardo's season ERA is his highest in seven years in the majors, while his 138 strikeouts follow four straight seasons of at least 200.

"You want to finish off the year strong and end on a positive note," Gallardo told the team's official website. "Ever since I came off the DL, things have been falling into place."

Gallardo's latest effort was wasted in Saturday's 7-2 loss to St. Louis as he yielded two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

He earned a 7-6 home win over the Mets (73-86) on July 6, allowing four runs in six innings.

Gallardo has had little trouble with David Wright, limiting him to 3 for 19 with a homer.

Wright left the series opener after he was hit in the head by a changeup from Johnny Hellweg in the third inning. The All-Star third baseman is 6 for 15 with two homers and three RBIs in five games after returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for 46.

"I feel pretty good. I passed all the concussion tests," Wright said. "I went through that protocol. It seems like it's good."

Eric Young Jr. is looking to move into sole possession of the NL lead in stolen bases after getting two Thursday to tie Milwaukee's Jean Segura at 44.

Young has swiped five bases over the past seven games, while Segura has been sidelined for eight with a hamstring strain.

Getting the ball for the Mets will be Carlos Torres (4-5, 3.36), who probably shouldn't expect much offensive support.

New York has averaged 2.6 runs and batted .210 over its last 19 games.

Torres, though, didn't need much help in Sunday's 4-3 win at Philadelphia. He allowed two runs with six strikeouts over six innings to outpitch Cliff Lee.

He had been 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA while giving up five homers over the previous three games - two starts.

                                Game: 2
                                Venue: Turner Field

Giving the ball to Kris Medlen could help the Atlanta Braves move closer to securing the NL's best record.

Facing Philadelphia Phillies ace Cliff Lee could mean otherwise.

Medlen looks to continue his dazzling stretch, as the Braves attempt to build on a rare offensive outburst and solve Lee at home for the first time in over two years Friday night.

Atlanta (94-65) has already clinched an NL East title, but has sputtered through September with an 11-13 record while batting .223.

The Braves are hoping they've become untracked following Thursday's 7-1 victory, scoring all of their runs in the first two innings of the opener of this four-game set. They also collected 12 hits with a homer and six doubles.

"It is good to get hits," said Jason Heyward, who had a career-high five hits, including a home run and three doubles. "Good to get on base and get the game going early."

Medlen (14-12, 3.24 ERA) is well aware of Atlanta's recent offensive issues, but he's 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in his last five games. That includes winning all three home outings behind a 0.42 ERA.

The right-hander was let down by the lineup Saturday, when he yielded one run in 7 1-3 innings in a 3-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs.

Medlen has won his last two starts versus Philadelphia (72-87) with a 3.46 ERA, and another victory could give the Braves sole possession of the best record in the NL.

They're tied with NL Central-leading St. Louis with three games left in the regular season. Atlanta won the season series, giving it the tiebreaker if the teams finish tied for the best record.

"Right now, we're playing for home-field advantage, and home is where we would like to be for the most part of our series," Heyward told the team's official website.

Lee (14-7, 2.93) may also enjoy being at Turner Field, where he's won three straight starts behind a 0.86 ERA since taking a loss in 2011. The left-hander has tossed 19 consecutive scoreless innings over that stretch, with eight coming with eight strikeouts in a 2-0 victory April 4.

Lee is 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 51 innings over his last seven starts. He was the hard-luck loser Sunday, allowing three runs while fanning eight in seven innings of a 4-3 defeat to the New York Mets.

He'll conclude the season as the Phillies' leader in wins and strikeouts (209), and the lowest ERA of a starter.

"I feel like I did OK," Lee told the team's official website. "I made it basically all year without really getting injured. I was able to take the ball and give the team a chance to win more times than not. As a starting pitcher that's my job, so I've got to feel pretty good about that."

He may also feel good about facing Heyward since he's held him to 3 for 19.

Jimmy Rollins, 3 for 4 with a double in the series opener, has a .355 average (11 for 31) over seven road meetings with the Braves this year. However, he's just 2 for 11 versus Medlen in 2013, while Domonic Brown is 4 for 9 with a homer and triple.
