                • Preview: Padres (71-80) at Pirates (87-65)
                  Game: 4
                  Venue: PNC Park
                  Date: September 19, 2013 12:35 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres are playing the role of spoiler perfectly.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the red-hot Padres when they face off at PNC Park on Thursday.

This week was supposed to be a chance for Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis to all take advantage of playing teams that will not be headed to the postseason.

The Reds have, sweeping a three-game series from last-place Houston. The Cardinals have as well, taking two of their first three against last-place Colorado.

The Pirates, however, are in danger of suffering their first four-game home sweep to the Padres since Aug. 8-11, 1996.

They took a 2-1 lead Wednesday on Andrew McCutchen's two-run homer in the seventh inning only to watch Mark Melancon blow his third save as the Padres scored two in the ninth to hand Pittsburgh a 3-2 loss.

Pittsburgh (87-65), which managed three hits Wednesday and has been held to four runs in this series, has fallen two games back of St. Louis in the NL Central and holds a one-half game lead over Cincinnati for the NL's top wild-card spot. The Pirates remain six games up on Washington for a postseason berth.

"I know we can do a lot better of a job than what we're doing right now,' McCutchen said. "We only have so many more games left. It's time to get going. We don't have time to be making it as close as it's been these past few days. We have the offense to do those things, to score runs.'

Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez are part of the offensive woes. Walker is in a 2-for-36 slump, while Alvarez is hitless in 17 at_bats.

The sputtering offense puts extra pressure on rookie Gerrit Cole (8-7, 3.33 ERA), who will look to win his third straight start.

Cole has strung together six straight quality starts, yielding a single home run. He has been particularly good in three September outings, posting a 1.35 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 20 innings.

"You never know where surprises are going to come from," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "You didn't know where he was going to be able to take you this season but his actions are speaking loud and clear."

The right-hander struck out seven Saturday, permitting a run in seven innings in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The Padres (71-80) have won 11 of 15, and lead the majors with 153 strikeouts this month. Their bullpen has given up two hits over 13 scoreless innings.

Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.85) is among the Padres faring well at the moment.

Since losing five straight decisions to end his time in Arizona, the right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA. Kennedy held Atlanta to three runs in six innings but didn't get a decision in Friday's 4-3 win.

Kennedy, whose 25 home runs surrendered is tied for second-worst in the NL, allowed two in the Braves' three-run fourth inning.

Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin, 4 for 40 since Sept. 2, will likely sit Thursday.

"I want him ready for Cincinnati (Friday)," Hurdle told the team's official website.

San Diego has won 14 of 15 at PNC Park and is 31-10 all-time at the ballpark.

"There is no rhythm or reason to it," manager Bud Black said. "If we knew why, we would try to bottle it and take it with us wherever we go."

                  • Preview: Mariners (67-85) at Tigers (88-64)
                    Game: 4
                    Venue: Comerica Park
                    Date: September 19, 2013 1:08 PM EDT

The Detroit Tigers missed a chance to move even closer to an AL Central title with a lackluster performance against the Seattle Mariners. They're hoping to avoid a repeat against red-hot rookie James Paxton.

Paxton will seek his third win in as many major league starts Thursday - and third against a playoff contender - while trying to keep the Tigers' magic number stuck at five.

After batting .295 and scoring 29 runs during a 6-1 stretch, Detroit (88-64) was limited to four hits in an 8-0 defeat to Seattle (67-85) on Wednesday. The Tigers, though, had their magic number to clinch the division reduced after Cleveland fell 7-2 in Kansas City.

Detroit, which has been shut out three times in its last seven home games, could have a difficult time regaining its hitting stroke if Paxton (2-0, 0.75 ERA) continues his impressive start to his career. The left-hander held NL Central-leading St. Louis scoreless for six innings in a 4-1 victory Saturday.

He gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five in that game after allowing two runs and four hits over six innings in his major league debut, a 6-2 win against Tampa Bay on Sept. 7.

"He's pitching in a very mature fashion for someone who has only had a couple starts," manager Eric Wedge told the team's website. "He's pitching with a great deal of confidence and seems to be calm out there. The ball is jumping out of his hand."

In this outing, Paxton will pitch opposite Doug Fister (12-9, 3.67), who is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two lifetime starts against his former team. Fister played his first two-plus seasons in Seattle before being traded to Detroit in July 2011.

The right-hander earned that lone win against the Mariners in his only matchup this season, a 6-2 road victory April 16 after giving up two runs and four hits over seven innings.

Fister is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his last four outings but suffered a 1-0 defeat against Kansas City on Saturday. He gave up the lone run in the first of his 7 2-3 innings, and Prince Fielder was thrown at the plate to end that game.

"I really have got to come out and be a little better out of the gates," Fister told the team's website.

Fister has received a combined six runs over his last four starts, and his lone win was a 3-0 victory in Boston on Sept. 2.

Kendrys Morales is 3 for 12 lifetime versus Fister but the three hits are two doubles and a home run. Raul Ibanez has a triple and a double in his six at_bats against the right-hander.

                    • Preview: Giants (70-82) at Mets (68-83)
                      Game: 3
                      Venue: Citi Field
                      Date: September 19, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

A dramatic comeback helped the New York Mets re-establish their success over the San Francisco Giants.

Giving the ball to Jonathon Niese, especially at home, may only extend it.

Following Josh Satin's clutch hitting, Niese looks to continue his recent home dominance and help the Mets take this three-game set from the Giants on Thursday.

New York (68-83) scored five runs in the final two innings, including four in the ninth after Satin's two-run, walkoff single provided the winning margin in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over San Francisco. He also plated a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

"If there's anything that typifies what we're trying to do here, it was that ninth inning," manager Terry Collins said. "When you're playing the world champions, down by three, Matt Cain is mowing you down, it might be easy to say to yourself, 'We don't belong here.'"

The Mets may have felt that way Tuesday, dropping the series opener 8-5 to end their five-game winning streak over the Giants.

New York is trying to conclude this 11-game homestand with five wins in seven games after being swept by Washington in a four-game set.

Turning to Niese (7-7, 3.88 ERA) could help since he's 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA in seven starts since returning from a partially torn left rotator cuff. The left-hander has been particularly impressive in three home games, going 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA.

He won at Citi Field again Friday, allowing three runs and two homers with seven strikeouts before being pulled with one out in the seventh of a 4-3 victory over Miami.

Niese is 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA in three career starts versus the Giants. He last faced them Aug. 1, 2012, when he allowed one run in seven innings of a 2-1 road win.

San Francisco will counter Niese with Madison Bumgarner (12-9, 2.83), one of the club's most consistent starters.

The left-hander has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 18 straight starts, San Francisco's longest such streak since Tim Lincecum went 19 games from Aug. 16, 2007-June 11, 2008.

Bumgarner pulled within one game of that streak in impressive fashion in Friday's 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He outpitched Clayton Kershaw, allowing two runs and five hits with six strikeouts in six innings.

Despite his consistent stretch, Bumgarner's victory over the Dodgers was his first in eight starts since he's been backed by an average of 2.7 runs.

He got plenty of help in his only visit to Citi Field on April 23, 2012, allowing one run and three hits in seven innings of a 7-2 victory.

Gregor Blanco has been superb at the plate during a seven-game hitting streak, going 12 for 23 (.522) with five RBIs and five runs. He had a two-run homer Wednesday, but he's just 1 for 6 versus Niese.

Buster Posey is 4 for 8 with two doubles and a homer off the Mets starter, but he's 1 for 17 while the Giants are 3-2 on this 10-game road trip.

While they've dominated the Chicago Cubs in recent matchups, the Milwaukee Brewers have never recorded a four-game sweep in 17 years as NL rivals.

Kyle Lohse will try to help his club accomplish that unprecedented feat with a better performance against Chicago on Thursday at Miller Park.

Milwaukee (68-83) eased to its 33rd win in the last 44 matchups with the Cubs on Wednesday and 22nd in 26 home meetings. Sean Halton's first career grand slam in the first inning was more than enough for the Brewers in a 7-0 rout.

"In a couple months I will sit back and look (and say) that was a crazy week,' said Halton, who also hit a three-run walkoff homer Sunday to give the Brewers a 6-5 victory over Cincinnati. "It is unbelievable to get an opportunity to be in those situations let alone come through in them."

Lohse (10-9, 3.46 ERA) will try to lead Milwaukee to another win over its NL Central rivals and its fifth in a row overall. The Brewers haven't won five straight since a season-high, nine-game win streak April 14-23.

The right-hander pitched a four-hitter Friday in a 5-1 victory over Cincinnati after a miserable outing against the Cubs on Sept. 6. Lohse was tagged for a season-high seven runs and 11 hits over five innings in an 8-5 defeat.

Junior Lake struck the big blow in the first inning with his first career grand slam.

"You're gonna have starts like that," said Lohse, who was 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his previous four matchups. "Guys have those starts ... but I look at the season as a whole."

Jake Arrieta (2-2, 4.42) will try to help the scuffling Cubs (63-89) avoid the sweep and a season high-tying sixth consecutive loss while avoiding his second defeat to Milwaukee in less than two weeks.

The right-hander gave up four runs over five innings in a 5-3 defeat Sept. 7. He had a better performance in his Cubs debut July 30 against the Brewers, giving up one run and two hits over six innings.

Chicago closer Kevin Gregg, however, blew the save in that 3-2 defeat.

Arrieta has allowed four runs in each of his last two games and lasted five-plus innings Friday before the Cubs rallied a 5-4 comeback win in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Manager Dale Sveum could use a strong performance from Arrieta and the rest of the Cubs to increase his chances of keeping his job after this season. Team president Theo Epstein wouldn't say whether Sveum would return next year on Tuesday.

"Some things haven't gone too well, and some things have gone really well," Sveum told the team's website Wednesday. "That's up to (the front office), and they're the bosses. They make those decisions and they have all kinds of things to evaluate."

The Brewers, meanwhile, are hoping to get shortstop Jean Segura back after he had to leave Wednesday's game with a strained right hamstring.

"It's not bad, but saying that, we'll see how many days it's going to be," manager Ron Roenicke told the team's website. "If he walks in here (Thursday) and he hardly feels anything, then we have a chance to get him back out there."

The St. Louis Cardinals offense appears to have awoken from its slumber at a most opportune time.

The Cardinals will look to pick up their 10th win in 13 games and potentially pad their lead atop the NL Central as they finish their series with the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.

The Cardinals picked up a 4-3 win Wednesday night and an additional game on the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lost to San Diego, and lead the division by two games with 10 to play.

"We're playing good ball at the right time," said pitcher Adam Wainwright, who had three of the Cardinals' 10 hits en route to his 17th win.

After hitting .164 in a five-game span from Sept. 10-14, St. Louis has bounced back with 54 hits - 17 of them for extra bases - while batting .355 and scoring 29 runs in the last four.

Used mostly as a reliever in August, Michael Wacha (3-1, 2.81 ERA) has fought his way into the rotation and hopes to benefit from St. Louis' resurgent offense. The rookie right-hander had pitched 13 shutout innings in his first two starts back in the rotation and eventually extended it to 23 2-3 overall before the third of his season-high four walks led to him allowing two fifth-inning runs in a 4-1 loss to Seattle on Saturday.

"He's trying to give me a free out, bunting the ball," said Wacha, who walked pitcher James Paxton before allowing a two-run double to Franklin Gutierrez in the fifth. "It's not acceptable, walking the pitcher. Anybody really."

This will be his first appearance versus Colorado.

Roy Oswalt (0-6, 7.71) had his best performance of the season Saturday, allowing two runs in 4 2-3 innings of a 9-2 loss to Arizona.

It was his second start back from a strained left hamstring that sidelined him for two months.

"Got a little bit of the velocity back," Oswalt said after extending from 66 pitches in his previous start to 83. "I still don't have 100 percent of my legs. I backed off a bit in the second trying to throw some balls down in the zone.'

It has been a trying season for the right-hander, who is in line to make the fewest starts of his 13-year major league career.

"Everyone else got to play seven months," Oswalt said. "I've been playing just two months trying to come back in the thick of things."

After starting September with six home runs in the first five games, the Rockies (69-84) have three in their last 11.

Colorado has stranded 20 runners over two losses to St. Louis, including five in the final two frames Wednesday.

"The moment was great," said the retiring Todd Helton, who struck out against Edward Mujica with the bases loaded to end the game. "You couldn't have asked for a better moment. You could've asked for a lot better result."

Michael Cuddyer, the NL leader with a .331 average, is day-to-day with wrist and forearm injuries sustained Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers may be sputtering, but they're still on the brink of clinching their first NL West title in four years.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, however, aren't making it easy.

The Dodgers get another chance to book a trip to the postseason Thursday, when they conclude four-game series with the Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles (87-65) has dropped 10 of its last 14, but still owns a 9 1/2-game lead on second-place Arizona (77-74) with 10 to play.

With their magic number at two, the Dodgers just need one more win over the Diamondbacks to clinch the West and get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

That's proved to be much tougher than expected as Los Angeles has dropped two of the first three games of this series after Wednesday's 9-4 loss.

"We like where we are at," manager Don Mattingly said. "It is one game at a time. (Wednesday) was a little bit frustrating. It was a frustrating game, but other than that, I am not really frustrated so much."

Keeping Adrian Gonzalez on the field would surely help. The first baseman had an RBI single Wednesday, but was ejected after doubling in the sixth. He appeared to drive in Michael Young, who was called out in a close play at the plate much to Gonzalez's chagrin.

Gonzalez is batting .381 with 11 RBIs over the past 12 games, and he owns a .467 average (14 for 30) with three homers while plating 10 runs in his past eight games at Chase Field.

Yasiel Puig is a frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year, and that was on display Wednesday when he came a triple shy of the cycle. He was 0 for 7 in the first two games of the series.

The Dodgers are expected to turn to Ricky Nolasco (13-10, 3.36 ERA), who hopes another meeting with the Diamondbacks can help him rebound from his worst performance since being acquired in a trade from Miami on July 6.

The right-hander was pounded for a season-high seven runs while exiting with one out in the second inning of a 19-3 loss to San Francisco on Saturday.

Nolasco had been 7-0 with a 1.59 ERA over his previous eight starts, and he's compiled a 0.83 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 21 2-3 innings while winning all three starts against the Diamondbacks this year.

Nolasco most recently beat them Sept. 9, yielding an unearned run in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-1 victory.

Arizona, though, is relishing its role as spoiler.

"It's still a pride thing," said Brandon McCarthy, Wednesday's winning pitcher. "You understand where things stand but you don't want to see them celebrate.

"If you can get them out of here without having to see it, then all the better."

Wade Miley (10-10, 3.70) is scheduled to get his turn, and he's 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA over his last four starts against the Dodgers. However, those all came on the road.

The left-hander allowed four runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-1 defeat in his most recent home matchup with Los Angeles on July 5, 2012.

Miley earned a 9-2 win over Colorado on Saturday, yielding two runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Paul Goldschmidt will likely be another obstacle for the Dodgers. He's hitting .395 with six homers and 20 RBIs to help give Arizona a 10-8 advantage in the season series.

The All-Star first baseman had a two-run homer for one of his two hits Wednesday, but he's 2 for 11 with five strikeouts versus Nolasco.
