        • Preview: Mariners (63-76) at Royals (72-67)
          Game: 4
          Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
          Date: September 05, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is clearly doing everything he can to boost his team's slim postseason hopes.

Now his club faces a pitching matchup Thursday night that looks unlikely to help its chances.

Seattle Mariners starter Joe Saunders is 4-0 in his career against the Royals while Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie has dropped his last five decisions versus Seattle heading into the finale of this four-game set at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals (72-67) tied a franchise record for a nine-inning game when Yost used eight pitchers in Wednesday's 6-4 defeat. Starter Ervin Santana allowed four runs in 3 1-3 innings before the manager turned to his bullpen that has produced an AL-best 2.52 ERA.

Yost's first six relievers held Seattle (63-76) scoreless before Aaron Crow allowed Kendrys Morales' tiebreaking two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning.

"It was just one pitch but that will hurt you," said Crow, who has surrendered four homers in his last eight appearances. "I just left it up and it hurts more so because the home run lost us the ballgame."

Kansas City fell 5 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the AL's second wild card with three other clubs ahead of it.

The Royals, 18-23 against left-handers, had a three-game win streak snapped and will try to defeat Saunders (11-13, 4.92 ERA) for the first time. Saunders has posted a 2.81 ERA in seven career starts against them, going 3-0 in five road outings.

Saunders, however, is allowing opponents to hit .306 - the worst mark in the majors along with a league-worst 1.58 WHIP.

He ended a four-start winless streak Saturday by limiting Houston to an unearned run over 5 1-3 innings in a 3-1 road victory. His 86 pitches marked his fourth-lowest 2013 total.

"I wasn't happy about coming out of the game," Saunders said. "I'm never happy about coming out of a game. I thought I had a lot left in the tank, but he's the manager for a reason and he makes those decisions."

Yost will hope that Guthrie (13-10, 4.08) gives him plenty of innings Thursday as the right-hander looks to reverse his poor history against the Mariners - the only AL team he has failed to defeat since 2009.

Guthrie is 0-5 with a 5.80 ERA in his last six outings against Seattle. He has allowed two runs in 12 innings over consecutive starts after a three-outing stretch in which he went 0-3 with a 6.63 ERA.

Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan is 5 for 10 against him while Justin Smoak is 4 for 12 with two homers.

Kansas City's Billy Butler is just 3 for 12 in this series, but that's been good enough for him to extend his streak of reaching base at home to 27 games. The slugger, 3 for 14 off Saunders, is hitting .376 in that stretch.

Kyle Seager is 6 for 12 with a homer in this series for Seattle while Raul Ibanez is 4 for 8 with two doubles.

          • Preview: White Sox (56-82) at Orioles (73-65)
            Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
            Date: September 05, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

A lackluster road trip didn't help the Baltimore Orioles' playoff hopes but a visit from the scuffling Chicago White Sox might.

The Orioles will try to keep the White Sox winless on their lengthy trek in Thursday night's opener of a four-game series.

Baltimore (73-65) finished 3-6 on its trip after losing its final two games against fellow AL wild card contender Cleveland. Manny Machado hit a three-run homer in Wednesday's finale but the Orioles couldn't overcome an early four-run deficit in a 6-4 loss.

"It was a tough road trip because we did some things well, but not as consistently well as we needed them to be," manager Buck Showalter said.

The defeat pushed Baltimore one-half game behind the Indians and four games behind Tampa Bay in a competitive field for the AL's final playoff berth. Only three games separate the four teams that have a serious chance to catch the Rays.

"We know everybody is trying to make the playoffs at this point," Machado said. "But we're not in panic mode. I don't think we will be either."

Making the playoffs will be impossible if the Orioles don't improve their hitting with runners in scoring position. They batted .215 (14 for 65) in such situations on the trip, going 4 for 27 against the Indians.

The Orioles will try for some better results against one of the AL's worst clubs. The White Sox (56-82) dropped to 0-6 on their 10-game trip with a 6-5 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Chicago trailed 6-1 after seven innings before nearly tying the game in the eighth.

"That's one thing I say about our team is we do fight to the end," captain Paul Konerko said. "We've had a lot of games that looked just like that this year where we were down four, five runs and we fight back, we just can't finish it off."

The White Sox are batting .219 during their trek and Baltimore right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (8-7, 4.11 ERA) is hoping this matchup will help him bounce back from one of the worst start of his career.

Gonzalez was tagged for seven runs over four-plus innings in an 8-5 loss to the Yankees on Friday.

"He pitched as well as you'd want, but couldn't get over the hump," Showalter said. "Miguel has pitched well this year and he'll get another chance."

In his first start against the White Sox, Gonzalez will pitch opposite Jose Quintana (7-5, 3.69), who should be well-rested for this outing. The left-hander made only 20 pitches before being lifted after a rain delay in a 9-1 loss to Yankees on Monday.

Quintana is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA in two career starts against Baltimore, but he struck out a career-high 11 and gave up two hits over seven scoreless innings in a 3-2 win July 4.

That victory helped the White Sox take two of three from Baltimore in their only other meeting this season. The Orioles won three of four in the most recent matchup at Camden Yards from Aug. 27-30, 2012.

Avisail Garcia is one of two White Sox players to have faced Gonzalez, going 2 for 3 with a home run. Jeff Keppinger (1 for 10) is the other.

Baltimore's J.J. Hardy needs one more homer to become the ninth shortstop to hit 25 or more in at least three seasons since 1901. He's 3 for 33 (.091) in his last nine games against the White Sox and 1 for 5 all-time against Quintana.

            • Preview: Red Sox (84-57) at Yankees (75-64)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Yankee Stadium
              Date: September 05, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

One thing is certain since Ryan Dempster drilled Alex Rodriguez last month - the New York Yankees are slowly but surely climbing into playoff contention.

The Yankees and visiting Boston Red Sox meet Thursday night for the first time since that incident, which may have boosted New York in its playoff push.

There always seems to be an added level of intrigue when these arch-rivals meet. That's even more the case since the Yankees' 9-6 victory at Boston on Aug. 18.

Dempster hit Rodriguez with a 3-0 pitch in the second inning of that finale of a heated series in which several Boston players complained that the embattled third baseman was allowed to appeal his 211-game suspension by Major League Baseball in the Biogenesis drug case.

New York manager Joe Girardi was vociferous afterward in defending Rodriguez, who homered off Dempster later in the game. Girardi says the focus will be on baseball in this series.

"I think that obviously we know what's at stake and we have to go out and play the games and win the games, and that's the most important thing," Girardi said.

Dempster, who has returned since drawing a five-game suspension for the incident, won't start in this four-game set. Slugger David Ortiz said that he thought it was a bad decision for Dempster to hit Rodriguez, and was then forced to clarify his remarks because it was taken as if he was criticizing a teammate.

"All I said was that I didn't think that hitting A-Rod was right at the time and it was because that kind of woke him up and we ended up losing the game. Did I lie about that?" Ortiz told the Red Sox's official website. "I think it was what everybody saw. I didn't say that I was mad at my teammates for hitting somebody, or I was mad that he hit A-Rod."

The Yankees (75-64) trailed Tampa Bay by 6 1/2 games after that contest, and have narrowed that gap to 2 1/2 for the AL's second wild card by winning 11 of 16 since after sweeping three games from the White Sox this week.

Boston (84-57) leads third-place New York by eight games in the AL East.

Ortiz went 3 for 5 with two homers to reach the 2,000-hit plateau Wednesday as the Red Sox matched the franchise record by going deep eight times in their ninth win in 11 games, 20-4 over Detroit.

"It was like lighting a firework. ... I see everybody happy," Ortiz said. "It's like the fireworks just keep on coming.'

Thursday's matchup of right-handers seems to favor New York since it has won six straight starts by Ivan Nova (8-4, 2.88 ERA) while Boston starter Jake Peavy (11-5, 3.91) has lost all four prior outings versus the Yankees.

Nova went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in six August starts to earn AL pitcher of the month honors, tossing a three-hitter Saturday for his first career shutout in a 2-0 victory over Baltimore. He's 2-1 with a 4.94 ERA in five career starts versus Boston, with Dustin Pedroia 4 for 8 against him.

Peavy, who owns a 3.96 career ERA against the Yankees, is 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six starts since Boston acquired him July 30 from the White Sox.

Derek Jeter is 0 for 8 against Peavy, his worst mark against any active pitcher.

              • Preview: Cardinals (80-59) at Reds (78-62)
                Game: 4
                Venue: Great American Ball Park
                Date: September 05, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds could very well be the two teams taking the field for the NL wild-card game on Oct. 1.

For now, they'll meet one more time in the regular season on Thursday night as St. Louis tries to salvage a series split in Cincinnati.

The slumping Cardinals (80-59) needed two extra-inning homers from Matt Adams to secure a 5-4 victory in 16 innings on Wednesday. It was just their second victory in seven games, helping to preserve second place in the NL Central by 2 1/2 games in front of the Reds (78-62).

Both teams are in favorable positions to at least achieve berths in the wild-card game with Washington - the next-closest team in the standings - 6 1/2 games back of Cincinnati.

"That was just a character win," manager Mike Matheny said. "The guys just kept grinding, not giving up or giving in. The job the young bullpen did holding them down was impressive. That's one of those wins you don't forget."

The Reds are unlikely to forget about it either, but for the wrong reasons as it marks one of their biggest disappointments of the season.

"For sure,' starter Bronson Arroyo said. "Definitely. When you play that many innings and have a couple of runners in scoring position ...'

Adams had been 0 for his last 17 before homering in the 14th inning. St. Louis squandered that lead when pinch-runner Billy Hamilton again stole a base and scored on a single in the bottom of the inning, but Adams went deep again two frames later, his 11th of the year.

The Cardinals hadn't homered in seven consecutive games, and are batting .185 over their last seven contests with 15 runs. The slump likely won't be helped by the loss of Allen Craig, who is being sent to St. Louis to be re-evaluated after leaving in the fourth inning Wednesday with a sprained left foot. X-rays were inconclusive for Craig, who is batting .357 with a .438 on-base percentage over his last 16 contests.

"Any time you're sending Allen Craig away it's not good news," Matheny said.

St. Louis' offense faces Tony Cingrani (6-3, 2.76 ERA), who makes his first start since a strained lower back limited him to 3 2-3 innings versus Arizona on Aug. 20. Greg Reynolds, who filled in for Cingrani for two starts, is available as a long reliever if Cingrani can't pitch deep into the game.

"He said he feels good, so we'll see," manager Dusty Baker told the team's website. "That's the same day that Reynolds is scheduled to pitch, so we'll see as far as he can go and how he feels. (We) talked to Reynolds about possibly piggybacking with Cingrani."

Cingrani had been rolling, going 3-2 with a 1.91 ERA in his last seven outings including the game against the Diamondbacks. He recorded 40 strikeouts over 37 2-3 innings in those contests while allowing 22 hits.

Meanwhile, Lance Lynn (13-9, 4.29) comes off one of the worst outings of his career after allowing seven runs and 10 hits over four innings of a 7-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Lynn has found himself off track lately, going 0-4 with a 6.83 ERA over his last five games.

Facing the Reds again could prove helpful considering he is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in four earlier matchups this season.

Jay Bruce is 5 for 12 lifetime off Lynn, though he, Joey Votto and Chris Heisey were a combined 0 for 19 on Wednesday.

                • Preview: Rays (77-61) at Angels (64-74)
                  Game: 4
                  Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
                  Date: September 05, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Rays seem to enjoy facing the Los Angeles Angels on the road.

The same can be said for David Price.

Price looks for another dominant performance against the Angels as the Rays seek a 16th win in 19 games at Anaheim on Thursday night.

Tampa Bay (77-61) is 15-3 in its last 18 games at Angels Stadium, winning 3-1 on Wednesday following a 7-1 victory a day earlier.

Having Price (8-6, 3.30 ERA) on the mound gives the Rays an excellent chance at winning this four-game series.

The left-hander has had little trouble against the Angels (64-74) lately, winning three straight starts with a 0.39 ERA while tossing 16 scoreless innings over the last two meetings.

Price is 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA in his last three games in Anaheim, striking out 21 in 20 1-3 innings.

He wasn't quite that sharp in his latest outing, which cost him more than his winning streak. Price allowed four runs in seven innings of a 4-3 defeat at Oakland on Friday, hours after a cab ride to the stadium that ended up costing $202 due to the Bay Bridge being closed.

He had been 5-0 with a 2.35 ERA over his previous eight starts - and slightly richer.

"It was a bad day all the way around," Price told the team's official website Friday.

That certainly hasn't been the case lately for Wil Myers, who has five hits - four for extra bases - in the last two games to break out of a 2-for-31 slump. The rookie right fielder had two homers among his three hits Wednesday.

"The only way to get through a slump is to keep hitting," Myers said. "You can't take days off. It's good to be able to help the team like that. Definitely a nice feeling."

The Rays hold the second of the AL's two wild-card positions. They lead the New York Yankees by 2 1/2 games in that race, but are still trying to cut into the 5 1/2-game deficit to East-leading Boston.

"We don't want just a wild card," Myers said. "We're still trying to win the division. It's nice to not be looking from the outside the wild card, but we still want more than that."

The Angels, losers of 11 of 13 at home, are scheduled to turn to Jerome Williams (5-10, 4.68), who hasn't won since beating Baltimore on June 12.

The right-hander is 0-8 with a 6.15 ERA in 15 games - 13 starts - since, but has shown some improvement lately. He has a 2.93 ERA over his last three games - two starts.

Williams allowed three runs in six innings before leaving without a decision in a 6-5 win at Milwaukee on Saturday.

"Finish the year strong, hopefully show people - not only this team, but anybody - that I can pitch and I can be a part of a rotation," Williams told the Angels' official website.

Williams is 1-0 with a 1.85 ERA in seven games - two starts - versus the Rays. He allowed one hit in three scoreless innings of relief to finish an 8-3 loss at Tampa Bay on Aug. 19.

Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson is 8 for 19 (.421) against Williams while Matt Joyce is 3 for 6 with a pair of doubles and a triple.

                  • Preview: Astros (46-93) at Athletics (80-59)
                    Game: 1
                    Venue: O.co Coliseum
                    Date: September 05, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

After tightening up the AL West race, the Oakland Athletics have a chance to take a slim lead if they can avoid a letdown against the lowly Houston Astros.

The A's have dominated the Astros for much of this season and the starter for Thursday night's series opener, Sonny Gray, played a part with a stellar outing last month.

Oakland (80-59) moved into a tie with Texas atop the division after winning two of three at home over the Rangers this week. The A's punctuated that series with an 11-4 rout Wednesday, their eight victory in 10 games.

Coco Crisp's fourth home run in five contests was one of four longballs Oakland had in that win, and Josh Donaldson hit a three-run shot. Texas is idle Thursday, giving the A's a chance to take sole possession of first place for the first time since Aug. 9.

"It's going to be fun," Donaldson told the team's website. "This is what it's all about. This is where everyone wants to be right now, in this position to control your own destiny and hopefully win a division title. I feel like everyone's feeling good about themselves, and we're playing pretty good baseball right now."

Oakland needed a sweep of Texas in its final series to clinch last season's division title but will try to avoid the drama this season by adding to its sterling record against Houston (46-93).

The A's have won 12 of 15 meetings this season and 17 of 21 all-time. The Astros, though, nearly swept a three-game series in Oakland from Aug. 13-15 before Gray (2-2, 2.57 ERA) had one of the best performances of his brief career in the finale.

The rookie right-hander struck out a career-high nine over eight innings in that 5-0 win and heads into this matchup after another superb outing. He pitched 6 2-3 scoreless innings and fanned seven in a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.

"Sonny is fun to watch I don't care who you are," catcher Stephen Vogt said. "I've been fortunate to have a front row seat for many of his starts. He's an electric pitcher."

Gray, 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA in three career home starts, will face a Houston team that's had double-digit hits and scored six runs in three straight games. The Astros batted .212 and produced a combined 10 runs in their previous six contests.

Houston, though, was nearly swept by Minnesota until coming back from a blown three-run lead in a 6-5 victory Wednesday. Trevor Crowe ended the game with his second RBI single of the day.

Crowe is 7 for 18 (.389) in four games since being called up from the minors.

"It's definitely a good start," he said. "I owe a lot of credit to (manager Bo Porter), I was in a good rhythm and he put me right in the lineup and I feel like I'm still in that rhythm."

Brad Peacock (3-5, 5.98) will try to lead the Astros to back-to-back victories for the first time in nearly two weeks by bouncing back from the end to his only win streak this season.

Peacock failed to win a third straight start when he gave up five runs, seven hits and four walks over 4 2-3 innings Friday in a 7-1 defeat to Seattle.

Peacock is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in two starts against Oakland with both in April. Crisp and Eric Sogard are both 3 for 4 against the right-hander.

                    • Preview: Diamondbacks (70-68) at Giants (62-77)
                      Game: 1
                      Venue: AT&T Park
                      Date: September 05, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

The Arizona Diamondbacks could sorely use a better performance against the San Francisco Giants to boost their faint playoff hopes.

The Diamondbacks seek to end their struggles against the Giants in a four-game series at AT&T Park that begins Thursday night.

Arizona (70-68) trails Cincinnati by seven games for the NL's final wild-card spot after rallying for a 4-3 win in 10 innings Wednesday against Toronto. Willie Bloomquist's third hit of the day helped the Diamondbacks avoid an interleague sweep.

Arizona, losers in five of seven, will next try to improve on its meager 5-10 record against San Francisco. The Diamondbacks dropped two of three to the Giants (62-77) this past weekend.

Arizona's Trevor Cahill (5-10, 4.39 ERA) and San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong (3-4, 5.49) matched up in the middle game of that set, and will be the starters for Thursday's opener.

Cahill kept San Francisco scoreless for the first six innings Saturday before giving up three runs in the seventh. Eric Chavez secured Arizona's lone win in the series with an RBI single in the ninth.

Cahill is 2-0 with a 3.22 ERA in four starts since coming off the disabled list and has a 2.08 ERA in his last three.

"I think he ran out of gas a little bit right there. You saw a lot more pitches were in the dirt in that last inning than the rest of the game, but we had to extend him as far as we could," manager Kirk Gibson told the team's website.

Vogelsong allowed all three of his runs in that 4-3 loss in the fourth of his six innings. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA in five outings since returning from an 11-week stint on the DL for a fractured hand.

"In that one inning, I got a little loose mechanically and that had an effect on how sharp the pitches were," Vogelsong said. "The rest of the game wasn't too bad."

Cahill has given up three runs or fewer in two of his three starts against San Francisco this season. He was tagged for a season-high eight runs over 3 2-3 innings in the other matchup, a 10-5 loss June 8.

Bloomquist will try to help the right-hander by adding to .571 average (12 for 21) since returning from a bruised left hand. He went 5 for 10 in last weekend's series and got a pair of singles off Vogelsong.

Aaron Hill is 7 for 14 with a home run all-time against Vogelsong and Gerardo Parra is 3 for 6 this season.

Angel Pagan, seeking a 10-game hit streak, is 3 for 7 this season against Cahill and 7 for 15 over his career. Pablo Sandoval is 6 for 20 all-time versus Cahill and enters this series hitting .389 with 19 RBIs in his last 19 games.

Sandoval had three homers and drove in a career-high six runs in a 13-5 rout of San Diego on Wednesday, helping San Francisco avoid a three-game sweep.

Buster Posey, who is 8 for 16 in his last four games, could return Thursday from an ailing finger.
