    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- North Dakota State 24, Kansas State 21-- Bison won I-AA national title last two years, but you can't be K-State and lose to this team, expecially in light of fact they paid the Bison $350,000 to play this game.

-- Jed Lowrie's 40th double of the year scored the winning run as the A's beat Tampa Bay 4-3. Lowrie is second in the AL in doubles.

-- Tigers are 14-3 vs Cleveland this season; seeing as Detroit leads by 7.5 games in the AL Central, thats a pretty big deal.

-- 38,026 at PNC Park saw the Pirates beat St Louis 5-0 and take another step towards making the playoffs for the first time since 1992.

-- Alabama QB McCarron was wearing a walking boot Friday, indicating a foot injury of some kind, but he is expected to play vs Va Tech.

-- Texas Tech 41, SMU 23-- Baker Mayfield was 43-60 passing for 413 yards as Tech beat the Mustangs in Kliff Kingsbury's debut as the Red Raiders HC. Mayfield isn't on scholarship- they better fix that.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind..........

    13) Why do coaches go for two points when they trail by a point in OT? Rutgers did this at 3am Friday morning and it failed (like it usually seems to do) and so the Scarlet Knights busted their butts for 4.5 hours before losing, 52-51. My question is this: Was going for two while down 52-51 giving Rutgers its best chance to win?

I’m just asking; just seems like going for two there gives the opposing defense a break, allows them to win a game by making only one more play, which gives the defense a lift.

    12) I get a kick out of media members who almost always praise going for two. Why? It ends the game quicker, and it makes the game story more interesting, which is all most media members care about.

    11) One last thing about being on national TV at 3am; how often does Rutgers have the national TV stage all to itself?

Wouldn’t it help them, in the long haul, to be on ESPN2 for as long as they could be? Even at 3am in the east?

    10) Fresno QB Derek Carr (David’s brother) was 52-73 passing for 456 yards in Thursday’s marathon win. Earlier Thursday, Bartolo Colon got taken out of the A’s-Tigers game after throwing 73 pitches. Guess young Carr isn’t on a pitch count.

    9) Vanderbilt WR Jordan Matthews caught 10 passes for 178 yards Thursday night, but was puking his guts out on the field late in the game (like Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday) after he got hit, to the point that ESPN announcers were saying “…it’s the first telltale sign of a concussion.”

But Matthews returned and played on the next series and the one after that—he finished the game. Hope the young man is OK, and it was just the heat getting to him and not a concussion.

    8) Which brings up to Matt Millen as a game analyst. Arguably the worst GM in NFL history, he is good natured, sounds smart and offers opinions, which is all you can hope for in an analyst.

Millen is actually pretty good on TV, although when he was praising an Ole Miss receiver Thursday, you got the idea the kid would be in Detroit next year if Millen still ran the Lions, given his penchant for drafting receivers in the first round.

    7) Vanderbilt coach James Franklin was once coach-in-waiting at Maryland, but he got tired of waiting and took the Vandy job, at which point the Terps fired Ralph Friedgen so they could hire Randy Edsall.

Seems like a big mistake by Maryland; if you can build a highly competitive team at Vandy, you can win at Maryland. There has to be more to that story.

    6) Matt Simms played the whole game vs Philly Thursday, going 33-44 for 285 yards. Not bad for the 4th-string QB, who is probably #3 now. When you think about it, can you envision Geno Smith going 33-44/285 right now? Me either.

    5) Eldrick Woods/Phil Mickelson have been paired together for 33 rounds on the PGA Tour; Woods had the better score 15 times, Lefty 14 times, with four ties. Mickelson shot a 63 in Friday's first round in Boston.

    4) To this day, there is still a shop in the Memphis airport that sells Elvis Presley memorabilia. Elvis died in 1977.

    3) Career extender: David Ortiz is 1-19 in his career against Oriole lefty Brian Matusz, so as long as Big Papi is in the big leagues, some competitor of Boston’s will want Matusz around to get Ortiz out late in close games.

    2) When Cubs scored six runs in the top of the first at San Diego last Friday but lost 8-6, they became the first team in seven years to KO a pitcher (Edinson Volquez) in the first inning while scoring 6+ runs and then lose the game.

It also made Volquez the first Padre pitcher ever (they started in 1969) to throw 100+ innings in a season and have an ERA over 6.00 (6.01).

    1) Baltimore Ravens open the NFL season on the road because they wanted to play that first Thursday of the season, no matter what, to get the 10-day break before Week 2. Over the last eight years, though, teams that played in the mid-week season opener are just 7-9 in Week 2 (3-13 vs spread, and while the Ravens don’t care about that stat, we do).
