    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- NFL settled its concussion lawsuit with former players; will cost all 32 teams roughly $30M each. Legal experts say they got off pretty cheap.

-- Towson 33, UConn 18-- Hideous loss for Huskies, who were outgained 393-290, so it wasn't even a fluke. Still think if you lose to a I-AA team, it should make you automatically ineligible for a bowl game. Seriously.

-- Miguel Cabrera left with an abdominal injury, is day-to-day for Tigers.

-- Dennis Erickson is offensive coordinator at Utah; pretty good guy to be a college assistant coach. Utes beat Utah State 30-26; good ballgame.

-- In nine baseball games Thursday, only four teams scored 4+ runs.

-- Ole Miss 39, Vanderbilt 35-- Who needs preseason games? This was a tremendously exciting game where both teams took the leads with big plays in the last 2:00. It'll be a while before another game is this entertaining.
    Late Night Update:

-- Rutgers-Fresno State combined for 1,085 yards of total offense, Fresno stops the Knights on a 2-point play, wins 52-51 in OT, in game that ended right at 3am here in the east.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with long weekend here...........

    13) Baseball GMs come from many different backgrounds. Theo Epstein (Cubs) went to Yale, Sandy Alderson (Mets) Harvard, Jon Daniels (Rangers) Cornell. Not sure when being an Ivy Leaguer made you GM material, but Brian Sabean (world champ Giants) went to Eckerd, Dave Dombrowski (Tigers) Western Michigan and Billy Beane (A’s) never went to college.

None of those Ivy Leaguers is a better GM than Beane, that’s for damn sure. (Full disclosure: Beane’s top assistant (David Forst) went to Harvard)

    12) Hero of the Day. Dave Dombrowski’s wife is the former Karie Ross, undoubtedly the most attractive anchor (1988-90) in ESPN history. A former cheerleader at Oklahoma during the Barry Switzer era, she once did a remote from outside that Sooners’ locker room that started with Switzer having his arm around her (he was on crutches with a broken leg). For landing Ms Ross as his wife, Dombrowski is our Hero of the Day.

    11) Theo Epstein’s sister was a writer for the TV show Homicide; his uncle and granddad wrote the screenplay for Casablanca.

    10) If you combine the August stats of Dodger pitchers Kershaw-Greinke-Nolasco, you get 13-2, 1.30, and that doesn’t even include lefty Ryu, who is pretty good, too. Not sure why they went after Edinson Volquez, but they did- he’d have to be a reliever in the playoffs.

    9) Yahoo.com points out that Oklahoma State’s football team has 67 players from Texas; the Longhorns have only two players from Oklahoma.

    8) San Diego Chargers held their walkthrough this week on the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which must’ve been an interesting experience.

    7) Everyone Needs a Job Dept: Former Boston College hoop coach Al Skinner was hired was by former assistant Tim O’Shea to be an assistant coach at Bryant College.

    6) Over the last four years, Felix Hernandez is 4-11, 4.69 against the Rangers; he is 0-4, 7.57 against them this year. He’s been pretty tough against everyone else; maybe he tips his pitches and Rangers are the only ones who picked it up.

    5) Before training camp began, what were odds that Matt Simms would start a game at QB for the Jets? He wasn’t a starter in college (Tennessee) and the Vols weren’t very good when he was there.

    4) Mostly Meaningless Stat Dept: Carolina Panthers’ 2013 opponents had a .543 winning %age last year, highest in NFL; Denver Broncos’ opponents (.430) had the worst.

    3) Brooklyn Nets are having training camp at Duke; apparently, there are no cruddy, old arenas in the NY/NJ area, so they’re going to GM Billy King’s alma mater. Nets’ coach Jason Kidd beat Duke in the NCAAs when he was a player at Cal.

    2) Further proof the LVH Sportsbook is the best one in Las Vegas; they have lines on all the college football games this weekend, even ones where I-A teams play I-AA teams. Plus they have excellent cheesesteak sandwiches and mini corn dogs in the deli in the back of the room.

    1) As good a season as Dodgers are having, the next new pitcher (Volquez??) they use will be their 26th this season, most in franchise history.

NFC West division preview: The best division in football?

The road to the Super Bowl goes through the NFC West, with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks among the favorites to capture the conference crown. But while all eyes are on those two teams, the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals could hold added betting value, especially when it comes to divisional matchups.

      Arizona Cardinals (2012: 5-11 SU, 7-8-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +3600
      Season win total: 5.5

Why to bet the Cardinals: Not much is expected from Arizona in 2013. And because of that, the Cardinals will be undervalued in the pointspread all season. The Cardinals’ defense was decent enough to keep them in games last season and if they’re able to improve, Arizona may get some unexpected wins.

Why not to bet the Cardinals: This team has major question marks from top to bottom and significant holes on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals will hand the starting quarterback role over to Carson Palmer and he will get good coaching from Bruce Arians and Tom Moore. But unless Arizona’s awful offensive line improves significantly, all of the coaching won’t do Palmer any good. Arizona is in a very tough division and we can’t envision them having a good win/loss record in 2013.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

      San Francisco 49ers (2012: 11-4-1 SU, 9-7 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +110
      Season win total: 11.5

Why to bet the 49ers: We spoke highly of the San Francisco 49ers and their coaching staff last year. They are one of the best in the NFL and we saw that when they made a trip to the Super Bowl with a young Colin Kaepernick at quarterback. San Francisco is loaded on both sides of the ball, especially its defense. The 49ers are in position to be the best team in the NFC once again and they are a certified Super Bowl contender in 2013.

Why not to bet the 49ers: They were exposed last season. San Francisco was flying well under the radar until it exploded and made its Super Bowl run. Everybody knows the 49ers are a good team now and they’ll be popular with the public. The oddsmakers will have to put an extra tax on their lines, which will create negative pointspread value for the 49ers.

Season win total pick: Over 11.5

      Seattle Seahawks (2012: 11-5 SU, 11-5 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +110
      Season win total: 10.5

Why to bet the Seahawks: Seattle is a youthful team with 87 percent of its 2012 players boasting three years or less of NFL experience. That youth is extremely talented and they take well to Pete Carroll’s style of coaching. Seattle’s offense is dynamic with QB Russell Wilson and RB Marshawn Lynch, and its No. 1 ranked defense held opponents to just 15.3 points per game in 2012. The Seahawks’ foundation is solid, so they will be another good team representing the NFC West in 2013.

Why not to bet the Seahawks: Their lone issue remains on the offensive line as they’ve had a hard time filling their right tackle spot. Wilson was pressured on 39.2 percent of his plays, which was the second highest rate in the league. That was mainly because of the leaky guard spot. And like the 49ers, the Seahawks will be a public favorite so they will hold negative value in the pointspread.

Season win total pick: Over 10.5

St. Louis Rams (2012: 7-8-1 SU, 11-5 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +720
      Season win total: 7.0

Why to bet the Rams: St. Louis will be much improved in 2013. Head coach Jeff Fisher is an excellent game planner and he makes his team competitive even when they are out-classed. The Rams are led by a strong defense that tied for the league lead with 52 sacks. They held teams to a respectable 21.8 points per game and with nine starters back, they will be even better this year.

Why not to bet the Rams: The Rams’ offense needs to score more points and quarterback Sam Bradford needs a healthy group of receivers to work with. Unfortunately for St. Louis, it plays in a tough division with four games coming against the 49ers and Seahawks. Overall, the Rams play a brutal schedule: Sixth toughest according to my rankings. Their win/loss record may not reflect improvement in 2013.

Season win total pick: Under 7.0

Ti-Cats at Lions: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Hamilton Tiger-Cats at BC Lions (-5.5, 53.5)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are the hottest team in the CFL, riding a three-game winning streak into their home-and-home series against the BC Lions. Hamilton will try to win four in a row for the first time since 2010 when it visits BC on Friday. Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris leads the league by 423 passing yards, driving an offense that has produced 104 points over the last three games now that its receiving corps is completely healthy.

The Lions stumbled on the road against the lowly Montreal Alouettes last week, losing 39-38 on a last-second field goal after a miracle pass completion by a backup quarterback. BC’s luck has been much better at BC Place, where it is 4-0 and no opponent has scored more than 22 points in a game. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay has not had a 300-yard passing game in 2013 and is on pace to set a career-high in interceptions with eight, making him the perfect representation of BC’s inefficiencies on offense.

        TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (4-4): The Hamilton defense recorded its first four interceptions over the last two weeks in a home-and-home series against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Defensive backs Raymond Brown, Dee Webb and Rico Murray and linebacker Jamall Johnson all recorded picks. Johnson also leads the team in tackles with 25. C.J. Gable has taken the role of starting running back since recovering from injury, rushing for 193 yards as part of 344 yards from scrimmage during the winning streak.

ABOUT THE LIONS (5-3): BC is tied for the league lead in interceptions with nine. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian is one of three Lions defenders with two interceptions and also leads the team in tackles with 42. Wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux continues to make big catches, with a team-leading 501 yards on only 26 receptions. Running back Andrew Harris leads the team in yards from scrimmage with 816 - 534 of which are rushing yards.

        TRENDS:

        * Tiger-Cats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games in August.
        * Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a S.U. loss.
        * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in BC.
        * Tiger-Cats are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Hamilton has not had much success against the West Division, going 1-3.

        2. The Lions have won their last 10 regular-season home games.

        3. Lions KR Tim Brown leads the league with 1,004 combined return yards.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 4: Playoff outsiders that just won't quit
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The dream of a playoff berth may be over for the majority of major-league teams, but that hasn’t prevented some from playing like they belong in the postseason.

Here are four teams that haven’t quit despite having their playoff hopes dashed (results as of Thursday morning):

                    Philadelphia Phillies (61-72, -15.62 units)

Despite being out of the playoff chase for several weeks, the resurgent Phillies have ripped off eight wins in their last 11 games. Philadelphia has fared especially well as a favorite, winning seven straight. Luck has played a major role in the Phillies’ recent success, as they’ve won six consecutive one-run games - including five in a six-game span earlier in the month. And with 16 of their final 29 games against teams with losing records, the Phillies have an outside shot at passing Washington for second place in the National League East.

Chicago White Sox (56-76, -17.94 units)

Chicago’s recent surge may be the unlikeliest of all, at least from an odds standpoint. The White Sox are a distant fifth in the NL Central but have caught fire with 10 wins in their last 12 games, including a mind-boggling seven straight as an underdog - five at +150 or higher. Pitching has been the catalyst, with Chicago ranked fifth in the majors in ERA this month. A rejuvenated Adam Dunn has helped, as well. The towering slugger is batting .283 in August, putting him on pace to record his third straight month above .270.

                    Washington Nationals (67-65, -11.06 units)

No team is catching Atlanta in the NL East, but the Nationals have been providing fans with plenty of hope for 2014. Washington comes into Thursday’s action having won seven of its last eight, with all seven victories coming as the favorite. After languishing in the bottom half of the NL in runs for most of the season, the Washington bats have come alive with 48 runs over the last eight games. And with 17 straight games against teams behind them in the East, a sustained run is quite possible.

Kansas City Royals (68-64, +1.49 units)

The Royals still have a slim chance of making the AL playoffs thanks to a four-game winning streak during which they’ve allowed just seven runs. Consecutive quality starts from Jeremy Guthrie, James Shields and Danny Duffy have helped erase the sour memory of a seven-game skid earlier in the month. Kansas City has a favorable immediate schedule with series against the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners on the horizon. At the very least, an above .500 finish looks promising.
