    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Eldrick Woods’ 2013 earnings on PGA Tour: $7,687,119. #2 on the money list: $5,006,408. I’m thinking he’s still dominant.

-- Thursday was fifth time this year Woods shot -4 or better in first round of a tournament; he won the other four times.

-- WR Mohamed Massaquoi got cut by the Jaguars, but was quickly scooped up by the Jets, which should help Mark Sanchez some.

-- Still weird to think that John Elway never played in a college bowl game; he would’ve his senior year, but loss in the Stanford Band game knocked the Cardinal out of bowl consideration.

-- Rays claimed David DeJesus off waivers from Washington; now we’ll find out how much the Nationals wanted him when they made the trade with the Cubs this week.

-- Odds to lead NFL in passing yards this year: Drew Brees 4-1, Aaron Rodgers 6-1, Matthew Stafford 13-2, Peyton Manning 7-1, Matt Ryan 10-1, Tom Brady 12-1.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: NFL food for thought..........

    13) ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman posted a list of top 25 college basketball tacticians from a survey he did of D-I coaches (roughly 2/3 of them) this summer at various summer basketball tournaments.

No Jim Boeheim on the list. Stunnin—well, not really stunning at all. He is a tremendous recruiter who plays the simplest of defenses with great athletes, then gets out of his players’ way and for the most part, lets them play. He’s been a great coach for Syracuse, wins a ton of games, made the school a freakin’ fortune, but putting him on the Olympic coaching staff as a tactician was/is comical.

    12) Tom Brady was once Michigan’s 6th-string QB; 6th string!!!! Now he’s married to a woman who made $44M modeling last year. 44 million dollars, and you thought Vernon Wells was overpaid.

    11) The new AAC is going to be an underrated basketball league this winter; Temple-UConn-Cincinnati-Marquette-Louisville make up half the league. That’s a tough conference.

We mentioned earlier this week that former Texas hoop coach Tom Penders tweeted that he thinks the AAC will get more teams in next spring’s NCAA tournament than the Big East will.

    10) College basketball teams are allowed to take one overseas trip every four years; these can be really helpful for the extra practice time teams get and for the bonding experiences they provide.

They can also be costly, like when USC’s PG Jio Fontan tore up his knee in Brazil couple years ago, or this summer, when Butler’s Roosevelt Jones screwed up his thumb so bad that he’s already out for this coming season. Mostly they’re a very positive experience.

    9) Kentucky moving its Louisville football game to the end of the regular season shows how little chance they think they have of ever getting to the SEC title game.

    8) If Bobby Petrino wins at Western Kentucky and he should, given his track record and fact that Willie Taggart left him a strong program, how long does he stay at WKU? What big-time football school is going to take a chance on him? Maryland as it goes into the Big Dozen Conference?

    7) Speaking of the Terrapins, basketball player Dez Wells got booted from Xavier because a girl charged him with sexual abuse, a charge that turned out to be so bogus, the prosecutor who investigated called the school’s banishment of Wells unfair, so now Wells is suing Xavier to help restore his good name. From what you read, he might win, or at least Xavier will have to settle out of court and pay him off to go away.

    6) Slowest pitch in the major leagues this season? A 57 mph curveball thrown by the Cubs’ Carlos Villanueva.

    5) Rough week for Oklahoma’s basketball program; first JC recruit Edson Avila was ruled ineligible for this season, then starting guard Je’Lon Hornbeak broke his foot and will be out 6-8 weeks, which puts him out of most of preseason practice. In unrelated news, Mr Hornbeak is an early favorite to make this season’s all-name team.

    4) Up until the late 70’s, NFL teams used to play six exhibition games. Six!!! Why? Two is enough; wouldn’t mind if the league went to an 18-game regular season, with two preseason tilts, the way the CFL does.

    3) Keith Gretzky, son of The Great One and future brother-in-law of Dustin Johnson, is now the Director of Amateur Scouting for Boston Bruins. Would’ve been better had his dad played for the Bruins, but you can’t have everything.

    2) Keith’s brother Trevor Gretzky is a 20-year OF for the Kane County Cougars in the Cubs’ chain; he is hitting .240 this season, no homers, only three walks in 96 PA.

    1) Travers Day in Saratoga is going to be a long one: post time for Race #1 is 11:30 am, post time for the 14th/last race is 6:51pm. Travers Night is always a good time to go out in Saratoga, located 25 miles north of Armadillo World Headquarters.

NFL preseason primer: Friday game betting breakdown

Here's a quick look at what to expect in Friday's two NFL preseason tilts.

Seattle at Green Bay (+2, 43)

This is a rematch from the infamous “Fail Mary” game from last year’s regular season that in many ways set the tone for both teams’ regular seasons. For a second straight year, the Seahawks have looked great in the preseason. Last year’s 4-0 campaign introduced us all to the exploits of future MVP candidate (yes, you read that right) QB Russell Wilson, and so far they are 2-0 in 2013, making it six consecutive double digit wins in the preseason under head coach Pete Carroll. That’s a big reason why they are favored here on the road. After humiliating Denver last week, 40-10, the Seahawks have now outscored their two preseason opponents this year 71-20.

Green Bay is 1-1 in the preseason, having responded from a 17-0 shutout loss to Arizona in the opening game with a 19-7 win last week at St. Louis. Reportedly, Mike McCarthy was unhappy with the team’s practice on Wednesday. The coaching staff has not made a decision on how much time the starters will play Friday, but it figures to be longer than the first two games combined. QB Aaron Rodgers has not thrown a TD pass this preseason, albeit he’s only been on the field for four drives total. Both Packers’ starting wide receivers – Randall Cobb & Jordy Nelson - are not 100%.

      Chicago at Oakland (+3.5, 38)

Both road teams are favored Friday night. The Bears and Raiders each come into this game at 1-1 SU. The Bears are 0-2 ATS, though the loss of Coach Lovie Smith has not affected the defense’s propensity to force turnovers. In two games, Chicago has an incredible eight takeaways. The problem though is new head coach Marc Trestman was brought in to improve QB Jay Cutler, who has not looked good so far. Last week saw Cutler play a full quarter, and while he completed 4 of 5 passes, the only receiver he targeted was Brandon Marshall. Though they put up 33 points in the win over San Diego, the offense had only 13 first downs and 185 total yards. Thanks to special teams and defense, they routinely benefited from good field position.

Oakland lost last week in New Orleans, 28-20 as six-point dogs. After one quarter, they trailed 17-0. The offensive line stunk, allowing QB Matt Flynn to be sacked five times. The defense was no better, allowing Saints QB Drew Brees to throw for 220 yards and direct five scoring drives. Making matters worse, the team suffered eight injuries according to Head Coach Dennis Allen.

NFL Top 5: Long-shot rushing yardage leaders

Bettors who put their faith in Adrian Peterson last season were rewarded handsomely. Peterson racked up more than 2,000 yards on the ground, and comes into 2013 as the clear favorite to repeat as the league's rushing champion - but he'll have plenty of competition.

Here are five running backs with an outside chance of being this year's top rusher (odds courtesy CarbonSports.ag):

        Alfred Morris, Washington Redskins (+1,200)

Morris burst onto the scene as a rookie, going from a starter on a 1-11 Florida Atlantic team to the NFL's second-leading rusher (1,613 yards). With a year of professional experience under his belt and a quarterback in Robert Griffin III who keeps defenses honest both with his legs and his arm, Morris could be in for another huge year.

Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs (+1,500)

Charles remains underappreciated by oddsmakers despite racking up the fourth-most yards in the league last season, buoyed by the third-highest yards-per-carry average among running backs. He's a perennial injury risk, but a season of relatively good health would almost certainly result in a bump up from the 285 carries he had last season - a development that would make him a legitimate threat to lead the league in yards.

        Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens (+3,000)

The emergence of Bernard Pierce as a solid backup has some wondering if Rice's days as the Ravens' primary offensive weapon are behind him. But he's still just 26, has three 1,200-yard seasons behind him and is coming off a reasonable workload (257 carries) in an offense that will need to rely on the run following the loss of wide receiver Anquan Boldin and tight end Dennis Pitta.

        Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville Jaguars (+3,000)

All eyes will be on the diminutive power back as he makes his much-publicized return from a Lisfranc injury that limited him to just six games in 2012. Jones-Drew says he's feeling good - and as a guy who won the 2011 rushing title and will be playing for a new contract this season, that might just be enough to vault him to the top of the list.

        Lamar Miller, Miami Dolphins (+6,500)

With 2012 starter Reggie Bush signing in Detroit, Miller comes into the season in stiff competition with Daniel Thomas for the No. 1 role. Miller is easily the faster and more elusive of the two, and a few big games early in the season could earn him the undisputed starting job - and with it, a shot at making his long odds pay off.

American Athletic Conference Preview: Keeping up with the Cardinals

The American Athletic Conference is part of the remains of the Big East Conference. The AAC will be a combination of teams from the old Big East Conference and some teams brought over from Conference USA. Louisville is expected to carry the torch for the new conference. Teddy Bridgewater is a serious Heisman Trophy contender. Who can compete with the Cardinals in 2013? This is the last year for an automatic BCS bowl game for this conference.

          Louisville Cardinals (2012: 11-2 SU, 6-7 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: -160
          Season win total: 10.5

Why bet the Cardinals: Bridgewater is the best player in this conference by a mile. Charlie Strong has this team believing it can do something special, and they proved they are capable of a lot in their Sugar Bowl win over Florida last year. This running game should be very good with Dyer and Perry sharing time in the backfield. The defense returns 10 of 11 starters from last season.

Why not bet the Cardinals: Louisville was awful on special teams last year, and nothing has really changed to make this unit much better in 2013. This is the type of thing that can cost a team a couple of games throughout the season. The offensive front isn’t as experienced as it was last year.

Season win total pick: Over 10.5

          Cincinnati Bearcats (2012: 10-3 SU, 9-3 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +350
          Season win total: 9

Why bet the Bearcats: This team has proven it can win consistently. Remember, Cincinnati won at least a share of four of the last five Big East titles. Tommy Tuberville was a good hire for the program. The offensive line is the best in the conference. Linebacker Greg Blair might be the best defensive player in the AAC. There is plenty of experience on this team.

Why not bet the Bearcats: Cincinnati struggled to win close games a year ago. The offense has a little bit of a shortage of play makers after losing its top rusher and two leading receivers from last season. The secondary had lapses against the best passing attacks last season.

Season win total pick: Over 9

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2012: 9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +525
          Season win total: 7

Why bet the Scarlet Knights: Rutgers has a lot more talent on the defensive end than most teams in this conference. The Merrell twins are superior athletes who should have special senior seasons. The Scarlet Knights defense allowed only 14.2 points per game last year, and they should be excellent again in 2013.

Why not bet the Scarlet Knights: Rutgers has some major question marks on the offensive end. Gary Nova threw 16 interceptions last year, and he completed less than half of his throws during the team’s three-game losing streak last season. The Scarlet Knights struggle to finish drives. Only ten starters return on the entire Rutgers roster.

Season win total pick: Under 7

Central Florida Knights (2012: 10-4 SU, 7-7 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +1000
          Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Knights: Blake Bortles and Storm Johnson are a tremendous duo in the starting backfield for the Knights. Bortles is a budding star at quarterback. He should start getting a ton of attention from pro scouts this year. Johnson is a quick runner who can break a big run at any time. The Knights also return three top receivers. This offense should be extremely good.

Why not bet the Knights: UCF is accustomed to winning with defense, but the defense returns just five starters from a year ago. Seven of their top ten tacklers from last year are gone. The offensive and defensive front might struggle a bit as UCF moves away from Conference USA and has to go up against some tougher teams in the trenches.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

          SMU Mustangs (2012: 7-6 SU, 8-5 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +2500
          Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Mustangs: SMU has gone to four straight bowl games. June Jones is great at getting the most out of his talent. Garrett Gilbert should be much better in his second year in Jones’ complex offensive system. The Mustangs have quite a bit of talent in the back seven of their defense.

Why not bet the Mustangs: SMU returns only 11 starters from last year’s team. The Mustangs lost a huge contributor in running back Zach Line, and it’s hard to imagine the team not experiencing a significant drop off at that position. The entire defensive line had to be replaced, and that was the strength of the defense last season. The schedule is extremely tough from start to finish.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

          UConn Huskies (2012: 5-7 SU, 4-6-2 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +3000
          Season win total: 6

Why bet the Huskies: The Huskies lost only 12 lettermen from last year’s team, so this will be one of the most experienced teams in the AAC. Lyle McCombs is a talented running back who should have a good junior season. Yawin Smallwood was the team’s leading tackler last year, and he’ll be a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year in the AAC this season.

Why not bet the Huskies: UConn had the worst offensive line in the Big East by a mile last year, and that will be a problem again in 2013. McCombs can’t get going because this line can’t seem to hold a block. The defense lost several of their top players, so they can’t be counted on to carry the team once again.

Season win total pick: Under 6

South Florida Bulls (2012: 3-9 SU, 3-8-1 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +3000
          Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Bulls: Willie Taggart did an amazing job at Western Kentucky, and he should definitely be an upgrade for South Florida. He brings a ton of enthusiasm and positive energy to the program. Tailback Marcus Shaw should get a lot of chances to show his talent with the team’s new emphasis on running the football. The Bulls are strong in the trenches.

Why not bet the Bulls: USF has a big question mark at quarterback. Bobby Eveld hasn’t proven himself at all while at the school, and time will tell whether he can lead the team to very many victories. South Florida tied for dead last in the nation in turnover margin last season. An overall lack of talent at the skill positions on offense is concerning.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

          Houston Cougars (2012: 5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +3500
          Season win total: 6

Why bet the Cougars: Charles Sims is probably the most talented running back in the conference. Sims has a great combination of size and speed, and if he stays healthy he could definitely have a special season. David Piland has the tools necessary to succeed in this system, and he should be better in 2013.

Why not bet the Cougars: Houston’s defense lost its three best players from a year ago, and even with those guys on the field this unit allowed 36 points and 483 yards per game. Will they be able to stop anyone this year? Houston got into the end zone on only 52 percent of their trips into the red zone last season.

Season win total pick: Over 6

          Memphis Tigers (2012: 4-8 SU, 7-5 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +6500
          Season win total: 4.5

Why bet the Tigers: They finished the season on a three-game winning streak last year after starting 1-8. Coach Justin Fuente did a great job keeping the Tigers motivated last season after a bad start. Jacob Karam is an underrated senior starter at quarterback. He threw 14 touchdowns and only 3 picks last season. The defensive line is an area of strength.

Why not bet the Tigers: The move up from Conference USA to the AAC could be tough for Memphis. This is a team that hasn’t been able to have a winning season in Conference USA since 2007, so there could be some growing pains in a tougher conference. Converting on third down has been a real problem over the last few years for Memphis.

Season win total pick: Under 4.5

          Temple Owls (2012: 4-7 SU, 4-7 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: +8000
          Season win total: 4.5

Why bet the Owls: Matt Rhule learned under Al Golden, and Golden was an extremely successful coach at Temple. Rhule should bring a lot of energy to the program. Temple returns 14 starters this year, so they’ll be an experienced team. The offensive line is one of the best in the conference.

Why not bet the Owls: Temple’s defense went from allowing less than 14 points per game in 2011 to giving up 31.2 per contest last year. The starting quarterback job is wide open, and whoever wins the job is unlikely to be a game changer. The Owls have one of the toughest schedules in the AAC this year.

Season win total pick: Under 4.5

            CFL
            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Week 9

Calgary (5-2) @ Toronto (5-2)—Argonauts beat Calgary six times in a row, despite being underdog in all six games; they beat Stamps three times LY, last of which was 35-22 (+1.5) in Grey Cup on this field. Toronto survived wild 36-33 shootout with Eskimos last week, winning despite allowing O’Reilly to pass for 511 yards. Argos didn’t have takeaway last week, after having 14 (+11) in previous five games. Calgary is 2-9 in last 11 visits here, losing last four by 3-2-3-13 points, with all four of those games going over total. Argos won last four games overall, scoring 35+ points in all four; they’re 3-1 at home, with only loss to 6-1 Roughriders. Calgary is 2-2 on road loss at BC last week, which snapped 4-game win streak. Last five Toronto games and five of seven Stampeder games went over the total.

Winnipeg (1-6) @ Hamilton (3-4)—TiCats (-3.5) won 37-18 in Winnipeg last week, outgaining hosts 456-321; Bombers then fired OC Crowton after game, week after they canned their GM. New guy calling plays makes this harder game to call; road team is 7-0 vs spread in Winnipeg games this year. Bombers are 3-0 as road dogs, losing by 5-7 points and winning SU at Montreal. Hamilton is 0-3 vs spread in its temporary home this year; they beat Winnipeg 25-20 (-5.5) here in Week 3, its only win in three games at Guelph- they’ve won last three series games vs Bombers, by 10-5-19 points- five of last seven series games stayed under total. Stamps at Argos: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calgary Stampeders at Toronto Argonauts (-2.5, 58)

A nagging knee injury has not stopped Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray from running the most efficient offense in the CFL. Ray, who has completed 143-of-183 passes for 14 touchdowns and no interceptions, will try to lead the Argonauts to their fifth straight victory when they host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday. Ray’s record-pace completion rate is a large part of Toronto’s recent dominance, but the defense has done its share as well, limiting opponents to five touchdowns in the last four games.

Calgary slotback Nik Lewis, who leads the team in receiving yards with 400, will miss at least six weeks after suffering a fractured fibula in last week’s 26-22 loss to the BC Lions. Lewis has been a stalwart of the Stampeders’ offense, recording at least 1,000 receiving yards in every season since joining the team in 2004, but Calgary has adjusted to big injuries successfully. The best way to shut down the Stampeders seems to be through running back Jon Cornish, who was limited to a combined 115 rushing yards in Calgary’s two losses.

            TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (5-2): Veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn has been a solid replacement for injured starter Drew Tate and will look to slotbacks Marquay McDaniel and Jabari Arthur to fill Lewis’ void. Calgary’s defense recorded three interceptions against BC, including one by defensive lineman Charleston Hughes, who also leads the team in sacks with five. Cornish is second in the league with 916 yards from scrimmage.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (5-2): Slotback Chad Owens remains a favorite target for Ray with 572 receiving yards as part of a league-leading 1,395 total combined yards for last year’s Most Outstanding Player. Running back Curtis Steele is a little banged up after filling in for the injured Chad Kackert as he was limited to 27 yards on five carries last week - his lowest totals in the three games he has played. First-year linebacker Shane Horton has a team-leading three sacks to go with three fumble recoveries, while linebacker Robert McCune leads the team with 43 tackles.

            TRENDS:

            * Stampeders are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games in August.
            * Argonauts are 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games.
            * Over is 14-3 in Stampeders last 17 games overall.
            * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Toronto.

            EXTRA POINTS:

            1. Calgary is 3-0 against East Division opponents.

            2. Toronto’s winning streak is its longest since 2007, when it won seven straight to finish the regular season.

            3. McCune, who joined the league in 2010, recorded 90 tackles, eight sacks and one interception over two seasons with Calgary before signing with Toronto.

                          Friday's Interleague Action

                          August 23, 2013

Tigers at Mets - 7:10 PM EST

Probables: D. Fister (10-6, 3.63 ERA) vs. D. Matsuzaka (NR)

Previous series recap: Detroit dropped two of three to struggling Minnesota, including Thursday's 7-6 defeat as $2.60 home favorites. The Tigers still control the AL Central, while wrapping up their eight-game homestand at 4-4. The Mets split a pair of games with the Braves, while losing the finale in extra innings on Wednesday, 4-1. New York owns a 4-6 record the last 10 games, as the Mets continue a nine-game homestand.

Pitching notes: The Tigers have won six of Doug Fister's last seven starts, with the lone loss coming as a road favorite against the White Sox on August 12. Detroit is 2-1 in Fister's three interleague starts, but the defeat came at Pittsburgh in 12 innings, in spite of the right-hander striking out 12 batters in seven innings. The 'over' is 4-1 in Fister's past five road outings, as the Tigers have allowed at least five runs in four of those contests.

The return of Daisuke Matsuzaka is finally here as the former Red Sox hurler makes his first start since last October. Dice-K spent time in the Indians' minor league system before getting released and ultimately landing with the Mets, as the righty gave up 25 earned runs in his final five starts as a member of the Red Sox to wrap up 2012.

Nationals at Royals - 8:10 PM EST

                          Probables: G. Gonzalez (7-6, 3.38 ERA) vs. B. Chen (5-1, 2.20 ERA)

Previous series recap: Washington grabbed three of four from Chicago, while holding off the Cubs on Thursday, 5-4 in 13 innings. The Cubs scored three runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings, but the Nationals came through in the 13th to win three consecutive road games for the first time this season. Kansas City's playoff hopes are fading by the day after the Royals were swept at home by the White Sox, capped off by a 12-inning defeat last night as $1.70 favorites.

Pitching notes: The Nationals have lost to the Braves five times when Gio Gonzalez took the mound, but the team is 14-6 when the southpaw faces anybody other than the Braves. However, the Nats are 0-4 in Gonzalez's four interleague starts, including road defeats at Detroit and Cleveland. The 'under' is 5-2 in Gonzalez's past seven starts overall, while the Nats are 1-4 in his last five outings as a road underdog.

Bruce Chen finally suffered a poor start in his last outing at Detroit, allowing six earned runs, two more runs than he allowed in the previous five starts combined. The Royals' southpaw is 6-1 to the 'under' in seven starts, including 'unders' in all three home starts. Chen faces a Washington lineup that has struggled against left-handed pitching, hitting just .223 this season.

Red Sox at Dodgers - 10:10 PM EST

                          Probables: J. Lackey (8-10, 3.22 ERA) vs. R. Nolasco (9-9, 3.60 ERA)

Previous series recap: Boston has alternated wins and losses in each of his last six games, while beating San Francisco in two of three contests. The Sox haven't won consecutive road games in their last four tries, while the 'under' is 6-1-1 in the past eight road contests. The Dodgers continue to stay hot after winning three of four games at Miami, improving to 9-0-1 in the last 10 series since the All-Star break.

Pitching notes: John Lackey shut down the Yankees in his last trip to the mound, scattering six hits and allowing one earned run in 6.2 innings of a 6-1 home victory. The Sox are 11-1 to the 'under' in Lackey's last 12 starts, including a run of seven straight 'unders' on the highway. However, Boston owns a 1-5 mark in Lackey's past six starts away from Fenway Park.

Ricky Nolasco has turned into a nice complimentary piece to this Dodgers' rotation, as Los Angeles has won six of his eight starts since getting acquired from Miami. Nolasco is making only his third home start in this stretch, splitting his first two outings at Dodger Stadium with a loss to the Rockies and a win over the Mets. The right-hander lost twice to the Red Sox last season, allowing 12 earned runs in just 9.1 innings or work.
