    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Worst records ever in NFL overtime games:

    4-10, .286-- Carolina Panthers

    3-7, .300-- Houston Texans

    9-18, .333-- Seattle Seahawks

    13-22-1, .375-- Miami Dolphins

    12-20, .375-- San Diego Chargers

    13-20-2, .400-- Atlanta Falcons

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) Cubs' SS Starlin Castro is hitting .244 with an on-base percentage of .280: he has a lot of mental lapses, including one Friday that cost Chicago a run in a 1-0 game against its arch-rival. Castro forgot how many outs there were and the Cardinals scored a run on a very short sac fly.

Chicago manager Dale Sveum pulled Castro from the game after that inning; Castro is 23 years old and a big prospect, but he's not a rookie anymore, so the Cubs are in a tough spot. At what point do you have to see progress in his mental game before you pull the plug on him?

    12) Check this out: the Los Angeles Angels already have $106,850,000 of salary committed; for the 2016 season, and that only accounts for five of their 25-man roster. Some outstanding financial planning there, considering that two of the players are Pujols/Hamilton, who have had dreadful 2013's.

    11) Major league leaders in 9th inning home runs this season:
Paul Goldschmidt 7, Justin Smoak 6, Justin Ruggiano 5.

    10) Phillie Phanatic is regarded as the best mascot in baseball, but he's going to have to work extra hard to keep Phils' fans amused for the last six weeks of this season. Philly has an old team that is caught between needing to rebuild and wanting to go for one last playoff run in 2014.

    9) Philly catcher Carlos Ruiz had the unusual 4040 line Sunday; he didn't get pinch-run for, he didn't score a run or knock in a run, and yet he went 4-4. That doesn't happen very often.

    8) Rough year for the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers; last week, they fired their GM during a bye week; this week, they fired offensive coordinator Gary Crowton after a 37-18 loss to Hamilton. Bombers are 1-6.

    7) Vanderbilt Commodores are 11-2 vs spread at home under coach James Franklin. Not too often Vandy has been 11-2 in anything football-related over the years, but Franklin has greatly upgraded their talent base.

    6) When Missouri Tigers visit Vanderbilt October 5, it could be confusing, since Mizzou's QB is also named James Franklin.

    5) Alabama is 49-5 in its last 54 football games; during those 54 games, Crimson Tide is +53 in turnover ratio, a remarkable figure.

    4) Other interesting college football trends: Temple covered 17 of its last 21 non-conference games; UL-Lafayette covered 15 of its last 17 tries as a road underdog; Toledo covered nine of last 12 as a road dog; Wyoming is a gaudy 15-4 vs spread in its last 19 games as a road underdog.

    3) Was impressed by former NC State QB Mike Glennon in the little bit I saw him play against the Patriots over the weekend. Glennon took over for Russell Wilson after the Wolfpack let Wilson bolt for Wisconsin- he was the Wolfpack's QB for two seasons.

This is a contract year for Bucs' QB Josh Freeman; fact that they drafted a QB doesn't bode well for Freeman's future in Tampa.

    2) ESPN insists on putting every Bronx-Boston game on Sunday night TV, but then MLB schedules Red Sox-Giants in San Francisco Monday nite. Boston isn't flying out until Monday morning, which is highly unusual, but Lester/Peavy, their next two starting pitchers, were already in the Bay Area Sunday night. Monday will be a long day for the Red Sox.

    1) Playing in NL parks this week means that if Boston wants David Ortiz in the lineup, he'll have to play first base. Does he even own a glove?

NFC East preview: Stiff competition presents value

The competition is fierce in the NFC East.

Dallas narrowly missed the postseason and put Monte Kiffin in charge of revamping a porous defense. The Giants faltered down the stretch after jumping out to a great start last season. The Redskins rode the RGIII train all the way to the division title before the quarterbacks' injury cut their greater aspirations short. Finally, Philly brings in a talented head coach to take the team in a new direction.

Who is going to come out of the East as king of the hill?

      Dallas Cowboys (2012: 8-8 SU, 6-10 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +200
      Season win total: 8.5

Why to bet the Cowboys: It was another 8-8 season for the Dallas Cowboys, and like their 2012 season, they failed to reach the post-season after losing their final regular season game. So they are close, and with solid offensive line play, Romo is capable of leading the Dallas offense to good things. Overall, the Cowboys have talent all over the field to make the playoffs this season.

Why not to bet the Cowboys: The Dallas defense once again allowed 400 points on the season; their second time in three years. That got defensive coordinator Rob Ryan fired and in steps the grizzled veteran Monte Kiffin. Head coach Jason Garrett is terrible, and he should have been sent packing as well. Dallas has the players, but they do not have the right head coach to lead them.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

New York Giants (2012: 9-7 SU, 7-8-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +240
      Season win total: 9.0

Why to bet the Giants: After beginning last season at 6-2 SU, the New York Giants ended on a disappointing 3-5 run to finish at 9-7 and out of the playoffs. However, the Giants were a much better team than their record indicated. They ranked higher in my power ratings than seven teams that made the playoffs, so there should be value in playing on the Giants this season. Their offense was terrific last season as they scored 429 points which averaged out to 26.8 points per game, 6th best in the NFL.

Why not to bet the Giants: Their problems last year came on defense, not in points allowed (21.5 ppg), but in staying on the field for long stretches which wore them down late in games. That is a concern once again this season, especially since the Giants are not getting any younger.

Season win total pick: Over 9.0

      Philadelphia Eagles (2012: 4-12 SU, 3-12-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +450
      Season win total: 7.0

Why to bet the Eagles: Chip Kelly is a tremendous coach, and we really like that the Philadelphia Eagles took a risk by relieving longtime head coach Andy Reid in order to give Kelly a chance. He’s a brilliant football mind, and we saw the spread-read option offense have a lot of success in the NFL last season. Teams will definitely adjust and be ready, but we expect Kelly will be a few steps ahead with his intricate offensive system.

Why not to bet the Eagles: The Eagles still need a lot of holes filled on both sides of the football, and they spent a ton of money to improve their leaky defense. Philadelphia is a team we anticipate watching a lot this season because of Kelly’s exceptional football acumen. However, he will need a couple of years to get his type of players on the team and to get the Eagles back to their winning ways.

Season win total pick: Under 7.0

      Washington Redskins (2012: 10-6 SU, 11-5 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +250
      Season win total: 8.0

Why to bet the Redskins: After starting last season at 3-6 SU, the Redskins finished on a 7-0 run in the regular season to win the division title. Quarterback Robert Griffin III was fantastic and head coach Mike Shanahan used his quarterback to perfection. Unfortunately for Washington, the injury to RGIII in the playoffs sealed their fate. If he can bounce back strong and show no ill-effects from his knee injury, then Washington could possibly repeat last season’s results.

Why not to bet the Redskins: Washington made the playoffs last season despite being out-gained in total yardage on the year. The Redskins had major defensive issues, especially their secondary which ranked #30 in passing yards allowed. Washington still has question marks on defense entering this season, along with a huge concern involving the health of their quarterback RGIII.

Season win total pick: Under 8.0

NFL preseason primer: Monday game betting breakdown

        Pittsburgh at Washington (-1, 38)

Week 2 of the NFL preseason concludes Monday night in the Nation's capital where the RG3-less Redskins host the Pittsburgh Steelers. Obviously, the big story with Washington right now is Griffin's status. The Shanahans aren't even going to let him sniff the field here. And why should they? In fellow second-year QB Kirk Cousins, they have a more than capable backup, one that completed six of seven passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in last week's 22-21 at Tennessee.

The Steelers have some work to do after an ugly performance last week against the Giants. They lost at home 18-13, thanks to a lot of mistakes. They committed seven penalties, had a punt blocked and fumbled a handoff in the end zone, resulting in a safety. The offensive line didn't do a very good job of protecting Ben Roethlisberger while he was in there, and when Big Ben left, the offense didn't do much from there.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Irish-Sun Devils close to pick in Texas

NCAAF Week 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (in Arlington, TX) (+2)

Past History: These teams have played twice in the last 20 years (1998, 1999). The Irish were 2-0 SU/ATS, 1-1 O/U.

Early look at the Fighting Irish: Notre Dame has a win total of 9.5 this season; it was 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS on the road last year. The Irish have one of the nation's most difficult schedules, playing vs. Michigan State and Oklahoma in the two respective weeks before this contest, then hosting USC.

Early look at the Sun Devils: Arizona State has a win total of 9.5 this season; it was 4-2 SU/ATS at home last year. After hosting Sacramento State in their opener, the Sun Devils then host Wisconsin, are at Stanford and then host USC before welcoming the Irish.

Where this line will move: Both teams have tough schedules. History would say that Notre Dame is going to have a hard time duplicating the success it enjoyed last year. Home-field advantage can't be overlooked in this particular matchup. Depending on injuries and what each team's record is coming into this contest, I wouldn't be surprised to see this line drop closer to a pick.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 3: Monday starters who excel at night
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all of Monday's action taking place under the lights, the focus is on starters who turn it up when the sun goes down.

Here is a look at three pitchers to consider if you're looking for strong evening performances:

Jose Fernandez, Miami Marlins (8-5, 2.45 ERA)

Considered by many to be the top National League rookie of the year candidate, Fernandez has been most dominant in the evening. The 21-year-old is 6-1 with a 1.97 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 87 night innings, compared to a 2-4, 3.25 mark during the day.

The Marlins host the Los Angeles Dodgers for a four-game series beginning Monday.

Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles (14-3, 3.70 ERA)

As his record may suggest, Tillman has been strong no matter what time of day he takes the hill. His night starts, however, have been especially impressive: he's 11-1 with a 3.47 ERA in the evening, while posting a 3-2 record with a 4.46 ERA in the afternoon.

The Orioles entertain the AL East-rival Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game set starting Monday.

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (14-6, 3.02 ERA)

Zimmermann's performances have been night and day (pardon the pun), depending on what time it is. The 27-year-old is 12-2 with a 2.59 night ERA, and just 2-4 with a pedestrian 4.28 ERA in afternoon starts.

The Nationals visit the Chicago Cubs for a four-game series opening Monday.

Texas hot, San Diego not, after MLB suspensions
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been a couple of weeks since the biogenesis suspensions were handed out and with the list of suspended players featuring only a few "everyday" players, we thought we'd take a look to see how those teams have performed post suspensions.

We'll look at how the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres have fared without Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta and Everth Cabrera respectively.

                        Texas Rangers (9-3)

The Rangers have been hot without Cruz in the lineup and rattled off seven-straight victories in their first seven games after he accepted the suspension. They've added RF Alex Rios to the lineup and he's hitting .310 since joining the club.

Any $100 bettor would be up $288.60 if they had wagered the Rangers in each of the 12 ball games.

                        Detroit Tigers (9-6)

Peralta was batting .305 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs prior to accepting the terms of the suspension and has been replaced by Jose Iglesias, who gives the Tigers a much better defensive option. Heading into Sunday's ball game, the Tigers were 8-6 since the Peralta suspension but the Tigers still had the AL Central lead by six games over the Cleveland Indians.

Any $100 bettor would be up $33.07 if they had wagered Detroit in each of its previous 15 games.

                        San Diego Padres (4-8)

The Padres have continued their downward spiral in life post-Everth Cabrera. The Friars were 52-60 before he was suspended and are 3-8 without the shortstop. Ronny Cedeno has filled in at SS but is hitting just .200 in eight games since coming over from the Houston Astros.

The poor performance makes the Pads decent fade material, however. Any $100 bettor would be up $269.74 if they had wagered Padres' opposition in each of their previous 12 ball games.
