    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- We'll get into this in more detail over the weekend, but the new replay system in major league baseball sounds like it is mostly good.

-- Average length of a big league ballgame in the 1960's: 2:31. So far in this decade: 2:54. I'd blame TV commercials for most of that increase.

-- Former Ohio State/Ravens' backup QB Troy Smith signed a 2-year deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who are having a bad year.

-- First half first downs in Falcon-Raven game Thursday: 16-3 Atlanta.

-- Gene Simmons bought the Arena Football team in Los Angeles, which is going to be called the LA Kiss and play home games in Anaheim.

-- 109 undrafted free agents played in NFL games last season.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: NFL questions to be answered this year.........

    13) Questions I’m thinking about with the NFL season just around the corner……..

    13) How will Chip Kelly do in Philly? I said all last year that the Iggles will miss Andy Reid and I still think that. Losing Jeremy Maclin for the year was an ugly start; the Riley Cooper fiasco wasn’t a whole lot better, but at least that seems to have been handled internally. Kelly came out of nowhere (OC at U of New Hampshire) to do a great job at Oregon. Will be fascinating to see how he does in the NFC East.

    12) Reid is in Kansas City with QB Alex Smith, who went 13-3 in San Francisco then got shown the door. Two guys who were successful in their last spot should do fine in Arrowhead; Chiefs’ Week 3 visit to Philly should be a fun night.

    11) Patriots didn’t have the best offseason, losing their top five receivers from LY. Tom Brady is 36, its been nine years since they last won the Super Bowl. Signing Tim Tebow is a head scratcher. They’re in a lame division; their passing game will be interesting to watch, especially early on.

    10) Sean Payton is back coaching the Saints, which is nothing but good news on Bourbon Street; Rob Ryan surfaces as Saints’ DC, after New Orleans gave up a ton of yards LY. Easy to envision a bounce back year for the Saints.

    9) Speaking of the Ryans, can Jets’ coach Rex Ryan keep his job? He has two new coordinators, a shaky QB position and an impatient fanbase; at least he got rid of Tebow, whose acquisition last year is still an unsolved mystery. Jets play New England in Week 2, which will either silence the frontrunners or make them really, really loud.

    8) Colts didn't have many injuries LY; those things tend to even out over time. Indy lost OC Arians to the Cardinals; they brought in Stanford’s OC, so no telling how that’s going to work out.

This is really Bruce Arians’ first full year as full-time HC after being ill LY. Andrew Luck is the real deal, but sometimes teams that make a big leap one year take a step back the next. We’ll see.

    7) Has Robert Griffin III really rehabbed so quickly? Coming back from his injury this fast doesn’t seem normal. Redskins are being very cautious with their star QB, so we might not know before their opener with Philly just how healthy RGIII is.

    6) Carson Palmer has moved to Arizona, Matt Flynn is now Oakland’s QB. Flynn has two career starts, the same number Matt Schaub had in Atlanta before he moved on to the Texans. Flynn can only hope his Oakland career goes as well as Schaub’s is going in Houston, but his lack of deep throwing is going to be different for Raider fans. .

    5) Can new Bears’ coach, QB guru Marc Trestman get more out of Jay Cutler than defensive-minded Lovie Smith did? Smith is only 4th coach since 1990 to get canned after winning 10+ games; it’s a calculated risk by Chicago management to get more out of their star QB, who also discovered he is a diabetic. Bears are an interesting team.

    4) Why won’t Jerry Jones draft a developmental QB? Tony Romo is in his 30’s, not like he’s Elway or Brady anyway- Dallas needs a young QB to push Romo and to eventually take over the top spot.

Why hasn’t this happened? Dallas is on Sunday Night Football twice in first seven weeks, not really sure why, but they always are.

    3) Will any of the seven first-time head coaches make the playoffs? You don’t get hired because the team you inherited is good; new coaches generally inherit some kind of a mess. If any of these guys make the playoffs, they’ll be a candidate for Coach of the Year.

    2) Steelers are minus-23 in turnovers the last two years; Big Ben seemed happier when Bruce Arians was his OC and he threw the ball all over the field. Todd Haley wants Pittsburgh to runt he ball more; they need to get that turnover ratio to at least around even to show improvement this season.

    1) The Super Bowl champ Ravens lost of lot of people from LY, which isn’t always bad; their QB got paid big-time, when it looked like he might be moving on to another team, before their miraculous playoff win in Denver.

Will the Ravens have what Pat Riley calls “the disease of me” when everyone thinks they’re the reason the team won the championship, or will Harbaugh do another superior coaching job and keep the Ravens in the playoffs?

NFL preseason primer: Friday game betting breakdown

      Minnesota at Buffalo (-3.5, 43)

Forced to throw rookie QB EJ Manuel to the wolves in their preseason opener, the Bills could not have asked for a better result last Sunday than what they got in a 44-20 road win over the Colts. Thanks to Kevin Kolb slipping on a mat (can't make it up!) and injuring himself, Manuel played the entire first half vs. Indianapolis & had a stellar debut, completing 16 of 21 passes for 107 yards and one touchdown. Kolb is slated to start Friday, the Bills announced Thursday. Behind Manuel, another rookie, Jeff Tuel also played well completing 19 of 23 passes for 200+ yards and two scores. It remains to be seen how Buffalo can adjust to the short week (Sunday to Friday), but this is 1st year head coach Doug Marrone's home debut.

Minnesota is a clear candidate to regress in 2013 from where I sit. We saw little of Christian Ponder in the team's 27-13 loss last week to Houston as he was in for all of one series and threw an INT. The Vikings are 7-3 SU all-time vs. the Bills in the preseason.

Tampa Bay at New England (-3, 40.5)

These two teams experienced very different results in their respective preseason openers. The Bucs got blown out at home by the Super Bowl Champion Ravens 44-16 while the Patriots went into Philadelphia and rolled the Eagles 31-22. Despite missing his six top pass catchers from a year ago, Tom Brady did not miss a beat as the Patriots QB completed seven of eight passes for 65 yards and a TD. On the team's first drive, Brady handed the ball off six straight times and the offense went 80 yards for a touchdown. Running back LeGarrette Blount ran for 101 yards (on only 11 carries!) in his Patriots debut. Backup quarterback Ryan Mallett got injured, leaving Tim Tebow to stink up the joint down the stretch.

In Tampa Bay, all eyes are still on QB Josh Freeman, who has been very inconsistent in his three seasons in the NFL. He was in for two possessions in the opener. Rookie Mike Glennon threw for 169 yards, but the bulk of that came on two completions.

Oakland at New Orleans (-6.5, 42)

The first thing that jumps out at me here is that this a pretty high line for a preseason game. But we all know how effective the Saints typically are at home. Last week, they beat another bad AFC West team, the Chiefs, 17-13. In head coach Sean Payton's return to the sidelines, the game plan was pretty vanilla on offense for New Orleans. On defense, things did not look good early for a unit that allowed an NFL record 7,042 yards last season. But against the Kansas City backups, they allowed just 135 total yards. Rob Ryan is the new defensive coordinator here.

Oakland also won its preseason opener, at home, in low-scoring fashion. They beat Dallas 19-17. Three projected starters along the defensive line sat out the game for the Raiders and they failed to put any kind of pressure on the Cowboys quarterbacks. On offense, free agent acquisition Matt Flynn didn't do much other than fumble. Terelle Pryor saw significant time and while he looked good at certain points, he also threw an interception in the end zone.

San Francisco at Kansas City (-1.5, 40)

Spirits should be high here as Alex Smith meets his former team. Neither team looked very good last week. San Francisco turned the ball over four times in its 10-6 loss to Denver last Thursday. QB Colin Kaepernick did complete all four of his passes and was in for only one drive, which resulted in a field goal. From there, the Niners did almost nothing. New kicker Phil Dawson was two of three on attempts. Reports are that last year's 1st round draft choice WR AJ Jenkins is treading on thin ice and may be in danger of not making the team.

Smith completed seven of eight pass attempts in leading the starters to a touchdown on the opening drive, but from there Kansas City did little, if anything. The special teams was promising with two big returns, one on a kickoff, the other on a punt. Starting running back Jamal Charles is out after straining his foot in practice. He is expected to be fine.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Beavers out to make statement at Utah

NCAAF Week 3: Oregon State Beavers at Utah Utes (+3.5)

Past History: Oregon State is 2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS, 1-3 O/U since 2007.

Early look at the Beavers: Oregon State has a win total of 8.5 this season and was 3-2 SU and ATS on the road last year. With a couple of cream puffs at home to start the season (vs. Eastern Michigan and Hawaii) the competition level raises dramatically for the Beavers starting Week 3.

Early look at the Utes: Utah has a win total of 5.5 this season. It was 4-2 SU and ATS at home last year. The Utes have three straight home games before hitting the road to take on BYU in Week 4.

Where this line will move: With a tough game at SDSU next week, this will likely prove to be a statement game for the Beavers. This is the Utes' first league battle as well though. Depending on injuries and what each team's record is coming into this contest, I wouldn't be surprised to see the line drop half a point as the public jumps on the proven home side performer.

AFC West preview: Are the Broncos worth the juice?

          Denver Broncos (2012: 13-3 SU, 10-6 ATS)

          Odds to win division: -340
          Season win total: 11.5

Why to bet the Broncos: One could argue that Denver became the best team in the NFL last year as the season progressed. The Broncos were the favorites to reach the Super Bowl for the AFC, but they came up short in their thrilling overtime loss to the Ravens. This year, they play a ridiculously easy schedule, and in fact, it’s the easiest schedule in the NFL based on my projections. There’s no reason Denver can’t duplicate their 2012 results.

Why not to bet the Broncos: Denver won 13 games in 2012, but only two of those wins came against teams that made the playoffs. The Broncos went just 2-3 against teams that made the playoffs last season. QB Peyton Manning surprised many with how well he played after missing a full season because of neck surgery. It’s hard to imagine Manning repeating his 4,659 passing yards and his 37/11 TD/INT ratio. Denver may have a very good win/loss record, but they will certainly be overvalued in the pointspread and a team to play-against quite often in 2013.

Season win total pick: Over 11.5

Kansas City Chiefs (2012: 2-14 SU, 5-11 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +580
          Season win total: 7.0

Why to bet the Chiefs: Expectations are low after a 2-14 season, but there’s a lot of upside for Kansas City in 2013. The Chiefs are desperate for a winning team so they made a big splash by making Andy Reid their new head coach and trading for QB Alex Smith. Kansas City’s defense will be under new coordinator Bob Sutton and he’s switching to a 3-4 scheme which fits the Chiefs’ personnel well.

Why not to bet the Chiefs: We like the acquisition of QB Smith, but the Chiefs simply gave up way too much for him and the moves left their roster thin in key positions. HC Reid and new offensive coordinator Doug Pederson will run their West Coast scheme, but Reid has a tendency to forget about his running backs. Jamaal Charles is a solid runner, but he recently got hurt in camp, and if he’s not healthy, Smith and the Chiefs’ offense will struggle.

Season win total pick: Over 7.0

          Oakland Raiders (2012: 4-12 SU, 5-11 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +2200
          Season win total: 5.5

Why to bet the Raiders: Oakland is another team in transition, but at least they may be headed in a better direction. The Raiders acquired QB Matt Flynn from Seattle, and they have a new offensive coordinator, Greg Olson. He will be installing his downhill power-running game scheme to fit Darren McFadden. That will take a lot of pressure off Flynn which will make the Raiders’ offense more balanced and less predictable.

Why not to bet the Raiders: Despite the changes, Oakland will give Jacksonville a run for their money to garner the title of the worst team in the NFL. Their roster is not of a high quality, and they will be starting guys who do not belong in the NFL. Oakland’s four wins last season came by a combined 31 points, while their twelve losses came by a combined 184 points. The Raiders have serious holes on both sides of the ball, and aside from the QB and coaching changes, there is little that is positive for Oakland heading into the 2013 season.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

San Diego Chargers (2012: 7-9 SU, 7-9 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +700
          Season win total: 7.5

Why to bet the Chargers: There’s a new coaching staff for San Diego and we think that is a positive. Norv Turner was a terrible head coach in San Diego, and he’s now running the Cleveland offense. Mike McCoy is the new head coach and he tabbed Ken Whisenhunt as his offensive coordinator. With the new voices and new schemes, we can see the Chargers bouncing back with a productive season.

Why not to bet the Chargers: San Diego’s biggest issue is their offensive line which failed big time in their protection of QB Philip Rivers last season. The line needs significant improvement, but until we see it on the field, we cannot expect the Chargers to be any better this season.

Season win total pick: Under 7.5

              Week 8

Hamilton (2-4) @ Winnipeg (1-5)—Bombers used their bye week to clean house in front office; doubt that will help right away on field. TiCats (-5.5) beat Winnipeg 25-20 at home in first meeting five weeks ago, averaging 11.3 yards/pass attempt- Bombers outrushed them 144-65. Home side won last five series games; Hamilton lost its last four visits here, by 3-16-7-22 points. TiCats have zero takeaways the last three weeks (-5) and only two for season (-6). Bombers are minus-9 in turnovers, coughing ball up 16 times already- they’re 0-3 at home, allowing 36.7 ppg in losses by 5-16-13 points. Hamilton hung on for upset win at Edmonton last game, outrushing Eskimos 156-71. Eight of last eleven series games stayed under total, as have four of last five Hamilton games this year.

Montreal (2-4) @ Saskatchewan (5-1)—Alouettes got whacked 38-13 at home last week by Toronto, losing five fumbles (-6 in TO’s) in their 4th loss in last five games, first since HC Hawkins was fired; Montreal split its two road games, scoring 38-27 points- they blew 24-0 lead in loss at Calgary, and are scoring just 17.5 ppg at home. Roughriders lost first game last week, 42-27 at Calgary (down 26-7 at half); they’re 2-0 as home favorites, winning by 15-37 points. Als are 9-2 in last 11 series games, going 3-1 in last four visits here and also beating Saskatchewan in two Grey Cups, so now that they’re struggling in post-Trestman era, will Riders take out their frustrations? Montreal allowed 34.3 ppg in last three games; their losses this year are by 8-8-11-25 points.

Calgary (5-1) @ BC Lions (4-2)—Lions (+3.5) lost 44-32 in Calgary in season opener, giving up 437 total yards, 200 on ground; BC lost its last three series games, by 20-5-12 points- six of last nine series games went over total. Stamps won eight of last ten visits here- their 34-29 (+6.5) upset win here in LY’s playoffs snapped 2-game skid at this site. Calgary won/covered its last four games, handing Riders their first loss last week; Stamps are 2-1 on road, winning in Montreal (22-14)/Winnipeg (37-24), losing 36-21 in Regina. Lions are 3-0 at home, winning by 8-10-7 points, allowing only 19 ppg; home team covered five of their six games this season. Five of six Calgary games went over total; two of BC’s three home games stayed under.

Edmonton (1-5) @ Toronto (4-2)— Eskimos’ star LB JC Skerritt (thumb) is out here, hurting Eskimo defense that gave up 30+ points last three weeks- they were down 20-6/17-6 at half of last two games, rallied to lose close games both times. Edmonton (+7.5) won its road opener in rain at Hamilton, then lost by 10 in Vancouver, 5 at Montreal- they’re 1-2 as road dogs, with five of their six games going over total. Toronto won/covered its last three games, scoring 35-38-38 points; they’re 2-1 at home, scoring 35 ppg there. Five of six Argo games went over total, including all three at home. Argos’ 42-26 win over Edmonton in LY’s playoffs was just their second win in last nine series games; Eskimos won four of last five visits here, with wins by 3-18-7-9 points. Four of last five series games went over the total.

Ti-Cats at Bombers: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3.5, 51.5)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats needed a bye week after edging the Edmonton Eskimos for their second victory. Hamilton - the most injury-riddled team in the league - hopes to be a little healthier when it visits the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday for the first game of a home-and-home set. Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris leads the league in passing yards with 1,803 despite a depleted receiving corps, which should soon receive a boost when wide receiver Andy Fantuz returns.

The struggling Blue Bombers used their bye week to fire general manager Joe Mack and replace team CEO Garth Buchko with Wade Miller after a rough start put the team at the bottom of the East Division. Coach Tim Burke announced that third-string quarterback Max Hall will make his first career start Friday in an attempt to shake up Winnipeg’s aimless offense, which has scored more than 20 points once since Week 1. The one strength of the Blue Bombers remains their defense, which leads the league with 24 sacks.

              TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (2-4): Along with wide receivers Fantuz and Ed Gant, defensive back Evan McCollough and linebacker Brandon Isaac are close to returning. Wide receiver Bakari Grant has been Burris’ favorite target in Fantuz’s absence, leading Hamilton with 408 receiving yards, but Grant has yet to catch a touchdown after recording five last year and could miss Friday’s game. First-year wide receiver Greg Ellingson has 395 yards and three touchdowns. Hamilton’s defense has not recorded an interception and is tied for last in the league with 11 sacks, part of the reason it has allowed a league-worst 187 points.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-5): Hall will replace quarterback Justin Goltz, who completed 32-of-63 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the last two games after taking over for injured starter Buck Pierce. Goltz told the media he was not given an explanation for the change, adding “everyone’s trying to search for a fast-fix and I don’t necessarily think one person is going to come in here and turn around our offense.” Defensive end Alex Hall has a league-leading eight sacks, but Winnipeg is struggling to defend the passing game, allowing eight passing touchdowns over its last three games.

              TRENDS:

              * The Tiger-Cats are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
              * The Blue Bombers are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.
              * The over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Winnipeg.
              * The Tiger-Cats are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. The Blue Bombers, who are on a four-game losing streak, are 0-3 at Investors Group Field - their new home.

              2. Burris leads the Tiger-Cats with 139 rushing yards on 25 carries.

              3. Hamilton defeated the Blue Bombers 25-20 at home with Pierce as Winnipeg’s quarterback in Week 3.

Three Friday hitters who thrive against their weekend rivals
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday marks a busy night of divisional matchups in Major League Baseball. With pennant races starting to heat up, the focus will be on hitters who have thrived against their division rivals.

Here are three batters with terrific numbers against their weekend opponents.

David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox (.327, 23 HR, 75 RBI)

Ortiz has feasted on the Yankees so far in 2013, batting 8-for-22 with a homer and four walks in six games. The gargantuan slugger was even more dominant last season, posting an absurd .619 average and .714 on-base percentage in six meetings with the Bronx Bombers.

Boston hosts the rival Yankees in a pivotal three-game series beginning Friday.

Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals (.330, 8 HR, 54 RBI)

Molina was activated from the disabled list earlier this week - just in time to face the Chicago Cubs, against whom he has had tremendous success. The 31-year-old catcher is hitting a sizzling .429 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 10 games against the Cubs this season.

The Cardinals visit the Cubs for a three-game set beginning Friday.

Kyle Seager, Seattle Mariners (.285, 17 HR, 54 RBI)

Seager's surprise breakout season has come largely at the expense of the rival Rangers. The 25-year-old third baseman is batting .418 in 55 at-bats against Texas, with 10 doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs.

The Mariners travel to Texas and face the Rangers in a three-game series beginning Friday.
