    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Cubs scored eight runs in their last four games; Alfonso Soriano knocked in 13 runs in his last two games.

-- Arizona has three walk-off wins in a row for the first time since 1997.

-- Schenectady's Casper Wells is already on his 4th major league team, just this season. He's played for Mariners-A's-White Sox-Phillies.

-- UNLV averaged 15,678 fans for its home basketball games LY, highest attendance of any school on the west coast.

-- Andre Ethier tied the game with a pinch-hit HR in the 9th inning, then Adrian Gonzalez won it with a 12th-inning double. LA beat the Mets 5-4; they're 40-8 in last 48 games, with 12 straight wins in one-run games.

-- I'll say this and only this: Angel Hernandez is a bad freakin' umpire.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Trying to figure out the meaning of life.........

    13) Being good in one-run games is a double-edged sword. Its obviously good to win a lot of them, but its also a sign your margin for error is very slim. Case in point, Baltimore, which was 29-9 in one-run games LY, but just 14-21 this year. they might be a better team this year but have a worse record, because they’re not pulling out the nail biters they did last year.

    12) Not often you see a guy hit a game-tying HR in the 9th inning, then end the game with a walk-off tater his next time up, but Paul Goldschmidt did that Tuesday, giving Arizona its ninth walk-off win of the year. Snakes got their 10th walk-off win of the season Wednesday.

    11) When Vin Scully started announcing Dodger games, Harry Truman was President. 64 years ago.

Think about that for a second. Harry freakin’ Truman. Wow.

    10) Royals’ trade for Emilio Bonifacio doesn’t look like much, but dammit its August 14 and the Royals are still trying to win. If I was a Kansas City fan, I’d be fired up.

Of course, it could also be the GM trying desperately to stay in contention to keep his job since he traded uber-prospect Will Myers to Tampa Bay, but still, the Royals are playing well and are still in contention. Good for them.

    9) This Saturday, there are no 1:00 baseball games, not one. Earliest games start at 4:05 in the east. They’re just daring me to sleep until 3:55.

    8) Elias Sports Bureau reports that the Mariner-Ray game Tuesday night was just third time in baseball history that both leadoff hitters (Miller/Zobrist) homered twice in the same game.

    7) Forbes Magazine estimates that the average NFL team is now worth $1.17B. That’s billion, with a B.

    6) Marlins gave Giancarlo Stanton Wednesday off; its insane, seeing as there is a DH in AL parks and Stanton could DH and still basically get the day off. Miami scored 25 runs in its last 11 games; Stanton gets all winter off. He can’t go up and hit four times?

    5) Weird TV shows: Tattoo Rescue on Spike (the redneck version of Bar Rescue), Extreme Cougar Wives (hideously self-explanatory) on TLC and Bad Ink (bad tattoos are fixed, as much as they can be) on A&E. Reality TV has gotten out of hand.

    4) Maryland’s athletic department lost $21M last year, $15M of which was in exit fees lost to the ACC due to the Terps moving to the Big Dozen in a couple years. They’re hoping the move to the Big Dozen will reap big $$$ rewards down the road. We’ll see about that.

    3) Reading where Oakland Raider coaches have accepted as fact that Matt Flynn won’t be throwing many balls more than 25 yards downfield, his arm just isn’t that strong. No vertical passing game? That sound you just heard is Al Davis turning over in his grave.

    2) ESPN re-hired Keith Olbermann and Jason Whitlock this month, in an obvious attempt for me to either:
    a) break my thumb going for the mute button or
    b) wear the mute button out completely.

Olbermann is supposed to be this real smart guy, but he can’t drive a car because he got hit in the eye with an elevator door, and it permanently screwed up his depth perception. If he’s so freakin’ smart, how come he didn’t get out of the door’s way?

    1) Is Scott Boras nervous about Jay-Z’s presence in the agent business? Boras suddenly shows up doing a guest column in Buster Olney’s slot on espn.com, trying to appear more human and less legal bigwig, as he explains the business model of baseball.

He’s a former ballplayer and obviously a smart guy, but as a fan of a small market team, I’ve got no use for parasites like him- they’ve made it a lot harder for my team to win.

AFC South division preview: Texans a foregone conclusion?

The Houston Texans played like one of the best teams in the National Football League through the opening 12 games of the season. The club did, however, falter somewhat down the stretch and played some ugly football in the postseason.

Without much competition in a dismal AFC South, the Texans look good to win the division and odds are reflecting that.

      Houston Texans (2012: 12-4 SU, 9-7 ATS)

      Odds to win division: -230
      Season win total: 10.5

Why to bet the Texans: They looked like the best team in the NFL when they opened last season at 11-1 straight-up. The Texans are still the best team in their division by a wide margin, and unless they are besieged with significant injuries, they will return to the playoffs. This team is built to win right now and they could make noise if they get the right matchups in the post-season.

Why not to bet the Texans: The season-ending collapse (1-3 SU) was troublesome, and their two playoff games were ugly. If QB Matt Schaub plays like he did late last season, the Texans will be hindered by his mistakes once again. Houston is only dangerous if they have their running game going with Arian Foster. Against good run-stopping defenses, the Texans will struggle, especially when laying points.

Season win total pick: Under 10.5

      Indianapolis Colts (2012: 11-5 SU, 11-5 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +260
      Season win total: 8.5

Why to bet the Colts: Indianapolis can build off their winning 2012 season because they have a solid NFL quarterback in Andrew Luck. He was ultra impressive as a rookie while throwing for 4,374 yards and 23 TD passes. The Colts also play a weak schedule this season with the majority of their tough games at home.

Why not to bet the Colts: Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians left for Arizona which may stall some of Luck’s progression this year. The Colts were a phony playoff team and their 11-5 regular season record was not indicative of their on-field play. Indianapolis was the only team to make the post-season with a negative point differential (-30). Nine of their eleven wins came by 7 points or less with six of those wins coming by 4 points or less. Indianapolis will be overvalued this season and we’ll look to play against the Colts quite often in 2013.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

      Jacksonville Jaguars (2012: 2-14 SU, 7-9 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +3400
      Season win total: 4.5

Why to bet the Jaguars: They went just 2-14 SU last season, so there’s nowhere to go but up. Jaguars’ owner Shahid Kahn axed his coaching staff and brought in new guys for the second year in a row. GM David Caldwell, head coach Gus Bradley, offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, and defensive coordinator Bob Babich are all new to the Jaguars. Maybe the new voices will have a big impact and get the Jaguars back to respectability.

Why not to bet the Jaguars: Jacksonville figures to be one of the worst teams in the NFL once again this season. While the new coaching staff is a positive, those guys have little to work with. They will need time to build from the ground up, especially since they can’t spend much money due to their salary cap issues.

Season win total pick: Over 4.5

      Tennessee Titans (2012: 6-10 SU, 6-10 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +960
      Season win total: 6.5

Why to bet the Titans: The Titans’ offense rests heavily on QB Jake Locker, and he needs a consistent running game and limited turnovers to be effective. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if Tennessee finished with a winning record because they do have a proven running back in Chris Johnson.

Why not to bet the Titans: They went 6-10 for the second consecutive season and their losing record was in big part due to a horrendous defense. The Titans allowed 471 points last season while getting out-scored by a whopping 141 points on the year. Tennessee lost seven games by 14 points or more, including three losses by 28 points or more. Defense was a major issue heading into last season and it is once again a huge concern this year.

Season win total pick: Over 6.5

                    Thursday, August 15

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three Thursday pitchers who are hot on the road
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking for some strong road action? Thursday's Major League Baseball schedule features several starters who have been sensational away from their home parks.

Here are three pitchers who don't mind the heat in enemy territory.

Tony Cingrani, Cincinnati Reds (5-2, 2.87 ERA)

The hard-throwing left-hander has been virtually automatic away from Great American Ball Park, posting a 3-1 mark with a 3.02 ERA and a .177 opposition batting average in 10 appearances. Five of his six quality starts on the season have come on the road - including a seven-inning, one-hit gem in his previous road start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Reds open a four-game set in Milwaukee on Thursday.

Zach Wheeler, New York Mets (5-2, 3.63 ERA)

Wheeler has been good just about everywhere, but the road has been especially kind to the 23-year-old (4-0, 2.21 ERA). He has surrendered more than one earned run in just one of his six road starts so far in 2013, and limited host Arizona to a run on six hits over 6 1/3 innings last time out.

The Mets kick off a four-game series in San Diego on Thursday.

Anthony Rienzo, Chicago White Sox (0-0, 2.95 ERA)

The 25-year-old Brazilian is only three starts into his major-league career, but two of those have come on the road - and they've been spectacular. Rienzo has surrendered just two earned runs in 13 innings away from the Windy City - and his opponents (Detroit, Cleveland) were no slouches at the plate.

The White Sox begin a four-game series in Minnesota on Thursday.

                      Week 8

Hamilton (2-4) @ Winnipeg (1-5)—Bombers used their bye week to clean house in front office; doubt that will help right away on field. TiCats (-5.5) beat Winnipeg 25-20 at home in first meeting five weeks ago, averaging 11.3 yards/pass attempt- Bombers outrushed them 144-65. Home side won last five series games; Hamilton lost its last four visits here, by 3-16-7-22 points. TiCats have zero takeaways the last three weeks (-5) and only two for season (-6). Bombers are minus-9 in turnovers, coughing ball up 16 times already- they’re 0-3 at home, allowing 36.7 ppg in losses by 5-16-13 points. Hamilton hung on for upset win at Edmonton last game, outrushing Eskimos 156-71. Eight of last eleven series games stayed under total, as have four of last five Hamilton games this year.

Montreal (2-4) @ Saskatchewan (5-1)—Alouettes got whacked 38-13 at home last week by Toronto, losing five fumbles (-6 in TO’s) in their 4th loss in last five games, first since HC Hawkins was fired; Montreal split its two road games, scoring 38-27 points- they blew 24-0 lead in loss at Calgary, and are scoring just 17.5 ppg at home. Roughriders lost first game last week, 42-27 at Calgary (down 26-7 at half); they’re 2-0 as home favorites, winning by 15-37 points. Als are 9-2 in last 11 series games, going 3-1 in last four visits here and also beating Saskatchewan in two Grey Cups, so now that they’re struggling in post-Trestman era, will Riders take out their frustrations? Montreal allowed 34.3 ppg in last three games; their losses this year are by 8-8-11-25 points.

Calgary (5-1) @ BC Lions (4-2)—Lions (+3.5) lost 44-32 in Calgary in season opener, giving up 437 total yards, 200 on ground; BC lost its last three series games, by 20-5-12 points- six of last nine series games went over total. Stamps won eight of last ten visits here- their 34-29 (+6.5) upset win here in LY’s playoffs snapped 2-game skid at this site. Calgary won/covered its last four games, handing Riders their first loss last week; Stamps are 2-1 on road, winning in Montreal (22-14)/Winnipeg (37-24), losing 36-21 in Regina. Lions are 3-0 at home, winning by 8-10-7 points, allowing only 19 ppg; home team covered five of their six games this season. Five of six Calgary games went over total; two of BC’s three home games stayed under.

Edmonton (1-5) @ Toronto (4-2)— Eskimos’ star LB JC Skerritt (thumb) is out here, hurting Eskimo defense that gave up 30+ points last three weeks- they were down 20-6/17-6 at half of last two games, rallied to lose close games both times. Edmonton (+7.5) won its road opener in rain at Hamilton, then lost by 10 in Vancouver, 5 at Montreal- they’re 1-2 as road dogs, with five of their six games going over total. Toronto won/covered its last three games, scoring 35-38-38 points; they’re 2-1 at home, scoring 35 ppg there. Five of six Argo games went over total, including all three at home. Argos’ 42-26 win over Edmonton in LY’s playoffs was just their second win in last nine series games; Eskimos won four of last five visits here, with wins by 3-18-7-9 points. Four of last five series games went over the total.

                      CFL Rankings: Week 8
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Riders fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last week, and from top spot in the rankings in the process. Here's how I see the CFL shaking down entering Week 8 action. Best of luck in all your wagers this weekend.

                      Last week's ranking in parentheses.

                      1. Calgary Stampeders (2) If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, as the Stampeders did just that in impressive fashion against the Riders last week at McMahon Stadium. Now comes perhaps an even tougher matchup as Calgary hits the road to face a hungry Lions squad at B.C. Place on Saturday. The Stamps have been the best 'over' bet in the league so far this season, recording a 5-1 o/u mark.

                      2. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1) The Riders weren't going to run the table this season, so last week's loss shouldn't be all that discouraging. In fact, I came away impressed by the fight they showed after falling behind big at halftime. Even with last week's poor defensive performance, the Riders have still allowed fewer points than any other team in the league (129).

                      3. Toronto Argonauts (4) It took some time, but the Argos appear to be over their Grey Cup hangover. It's been their defense that has fueled their turnaround. This is a young group that has put its early season struggles behind it and will have another opportunity to pad its stats against a reeling Eskimos squad this Sunday. The Argos already own a two-game advantage atop the East Division and could stretch that margin this week.

                      4. B.C. Lions (3) I don't like dropping teams coming off a bye week but the Argos strong play forced my hand, moving the Lions down a spot this week. They'll get a chance to make a major statement against the Stamps on Saturday night. I'm looking for QB Travis Lulay to really take control of the offense and turn in his best game of the season. We've yet to see him really shine, but it's coming.

                      5. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6) The bye week came at a good time for the banged-up Ti-Cats. They'll have a good opportunity to make a move over the next couple of weeks with back-to-back winnable games against the struggling Blue Bombers. Andy Fantuz's return can't come soon enough as Hamilton has scored just 129 points through six contests this season. He's unlikely to suit up again this week in Winnipeg.

                      6. Montreal Alouettes (5) Even though they sit in a second place tie in the East Division, it's getting close to desperation time for Jim Popp's Alouettes. The post-Dan Hawkins era didn't exactly get off to a positive start last week with the Als getting smoked by the Argos at McGill Stadium. Things won't get any easier this week as they travel to Regina to face the Riders.

                      7. Edmonton Eskimos (7) The Eskimos received a major blow this week with the news that LB J.C. Sherritt will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time after suffering a broken thumb on August 2nd. This is a deep defense, but losing last year's Most Outstanding Defensive Player certainly stings. That means the Esks will need even more from a much-maligned offense that has yet to get rolling this year.

                      8. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8) Another week, another QB move in Winnipeg as Max Hall will take over the reins against Hamilton this week. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that the Bombers didn't give Justin Goltz long enough to gel with the offense. He had shown plenty of positive signs, but apparently not enough for Winnipeg management. We'll see if the move pays off, but I'm guessing Buck Pierce's turn in the QB carousel is right around the corner.
