    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

13 golfers who made the cut in all four majors this year.........

    cumulative score

    Henrik Stenson, +4
    Lee Westwood, +10

    *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) In some parts of the country (Los Angeles for one, I think) kids went back to school this week. Here in upstate New York, little people don’t go back to school until after Labor Day.

My question: Would you rather have the next three weeks off, or the first three weeks in June? I’d kind of prefer these next three weeks off, but maybe that’s because I grew up here and am used to that schedule.

    12) Former NBA star Jerry Lucas (now age 73) is selling off his memorabilia via auction, some of which is classic stuff: an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship ring, some jerseys.

Its going to net him a lot of money, but its kind of sad. You’d think he’d want to keep stuff like that in his family. Lucas’ best days were at Ohio State and with the Cincinnati Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) but he was also a key sub on the Knicks’ 1973 title team.

    11) CBSSports.com did a poll this week on which mid-major college basketball coach would be next year’s Andy Enfield, parlaying two good weekends into a million-dollar plus payday. They got 19 different answers; Enfield had an NBA coaching pedigree to his name, and that helped him land the USC job, since he was already on some schools’ (Old Dominion for one) search list before Florida Gulf Coast made their NCAA run.

Manhattan’s Steve Masiello (former Pitino assistant) was one of the poll’s leaders, by the way. The next NYC-area college hoop team that wins big is going to get A LOT of attention.

    10) Early returns on Tigers’ new SS Jose Iglesias have been very positive; he’s been a defensive upgrade and he can hit some. Defense is one area where Detroit needed improvement.

    9) From the department of actions speak louder than words: Phoenix Suns’ rookie Archie Goodwin was running his mouth this week about making teams that passed him in the draft pay for their mistake of not picking him. Just play well and others will do your talking for you. Goodwin did look good out in the Las Vegas summer league, but shut up and play already.

    8) Through Monday’s games, Minnesota Twins’ last 22 runs scored via home runs, the longest such major league streak since 2002. Twins put Justin Morneau on waivers too—if they sell him off, it ain’t going to help that offense any. The accountants will be happy, though.

    7) 13 golfers made the cut at all four majors this summer; the list is in the table up above. Its not as easy as it sounds.

    6) Dwight Howard is working out with Hakeem Ojajuwon this summer; we can only hope that Hakeem is making him work on his foul shooting. That’s 3-4 points a game he could add to his average without doing one other thing better. It might actually add more points, because teams wouldn’t defend him as aggressively if they knew he was knocking down free throws.

To be specific, Howard missed 366 foul shots LY, 4.82 per game, missing more than half his FTs for the second year in a row.

    5) Raiders’ new QB Matt Flynn has two career starts, the same number Matt Schaub had in Atlanta, before he went to the Texans.

Flynn can only hope this move works out as well for him as Schaub’s to Houston has worked out.

    4) Speaking of the Texans, they play San Diego in the late ESPN Monday Night game September 9; announce team is Chris Berman/Trent Dilfer, which means an early call for the mute button. I like Dilfer, but Berman is nails on a chalkboard. His self-serving act is tired, annoying and lame.

    3) Dan Uggla is having Lasik surgery, as if the rest of us who used to have him on our fantasy teams didn’t know he can’t see. He should be back in time for the playoffs. If he crushes the ball when he gets back, lot of people are going to want to know what took him so long (3-4 years?) to get the surgery?

    2) There are five active NBA head coaches who once worked for Gregg Popovich; hopefully they’ll all be nicer than Pop to sideline reporters during those unneeded in-game interviews.

    1) Was reminded today of meeting Dusty Baker when I was 15; had him sign this small baseball handbook that had bios of the teams’ best players. Problem was, I didn’t read his bio before having him sign it; the book’s author crushed Baker for being hurt a lot.

Dusty read the paragraph and laughed; he had a broken wrist at the time. Signed the book, gave it back to me and was as nice as could be. To this day, still root for the guy.

NFL Week 2 preseason primer: Thursday betting preview

A look at the essentials for bettors heading into Thursday's action in the NFL, including how long starters are expected to play for each team.

      Detroit at Cleveland (Pick, 41)

The Cleveland Browns won their preseason opener, 27-19 at home against the St. Louis Rams. This will be the final preseason home game for first year head coach Rob Chudzinski. Quarterback Brandon Weeden looked good last week, completing 10 of 13 passes for 112 yards and led a pair of scoring drives. Cleveland's starters outscored their St. Louis' counterparts 17-0. A decision on whether or not RB Trent Richardson will play this week will not be made until sometime Wednesday.

Like Cleveland, Detroit won its preseason opener, beating the Jets 26-17. Expect starters for both teams to play about the same amount of time as last week, if not a bit more. This is an annual preseason clash for the "Great Lakes Cup." The road team has won the last two years and Detroit holds a slight 6-5 ATS edge since '02.

      Atlanta at Baltimore (-3.5, 41)

Very different results for these teams last week. The Falcons continued their preseason woes with a 34-10 home loss to Cincinnati. They are just 7-14 SU (straight up) in the preseason under Mike Smith. Atlanta has released its official depth chart already. There are major concerns along the offensive line as the team needs a new starting right tackle as Mike Johnson has been lost for the season. Backup quarterback Dominique Davis looked awful last week, completing only 8 of 19 passes for 78 yards and one interception.

Baltimore went to Tampa Bay last week and routed the Bucs 44-16. The defending Super Bowl champs looked very good in doing so. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor completed 13 of 23 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, so give the Ravens the edge when the starting quarterbacks leave.

      Carolina at Philadelphia (-3, 42)

This will be first year head coach Chip Kelly's last chance to win a home game before the regular season. The Eagles lost last week 31-22 to the Patriots. Obviously, the big story in Philly is the battle for the starting QB job between Mike Vick and Nick Foles. Both threw a touchdown pass last week. It is Foles turn to start this week. It appears as if Kelly will keep his "up-tempo" offense under wraps during the preseason.

Carolina won its preseason opener 24-17 at home over the Chicago Bears in spite of some sloppy play. Quarterback Cam Newton threw a terrible pick six. Rookie running back Kenjon Barner had a pair of fumbles.

San Diego at Chicago (-5, 38)

The San Diego Chargers have a lot of problems. They were beaten at home last week 31-10 by the Seattle Seahawks, which was first year head coach Mike McCoy's debut. There are major injury issues at the receiver position. Danario Alexander is gone for the season with an ACL and Malcom Floyd has a strained knee. I think its going to be a long season here. Backup QB Charlie Whitehurst threw two picks and was sacked three times last week.

The Bears lost Marc Trestman's debut to Carolina last week despite forcing four turnovers. This will be Trestman's debut at Soldier Field. The first string offense ran the ball only once against nine pass plays in the opener. The offensive line allowed seven sacks.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Huskers line could grow vs. MSU

NCAAF Week 12: Michigan State Spartans at Nebraska Cornhuskers(-4)

        Past History: Nebraska is 5-0 SU/ATS, the O/U is 3-2 since 1995.

Early look at the Spartans: Michigan State has a win total of 8.5 this season; it was 4-1 SU/ATS on the road last year. With its annual rivalry game vs. the Wolverines on November 2, the Spartans will have two full weeks off before playing in Nebraska.

Early look at the Cornhuskers: Nebraska has a win total of 9.5 this season; it was 7-1 SU and 5-2-1 ATS at home last year. The Cornhuskers are at Michigan on November 9, before hosting the Spartans. They then hit the road once again to play at Penn State the following week.

Where this line will move: This is a tough one. As a "situational handicapper", the oddsmakers would seemingly be right on the money with this line. Depending on injuries and what each team's record is coming into this contest, I wouldn't be surprised to see this line climb a little higher (a full point) as the public jumps on the proven home side performer.

MLB Top 3: Hot 'under' pitchers on the mound Wednesday
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking play some totals? Wednesday's Major League Baseball action features a trio of pitchers that have trended toward scorelines finishing under the total.

Here is a look at three pitchers to consider if you're looking to play totals.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (7-5, 2.87 ERA)

The 'under' is 9-1 in Weaver's previous 10 trips to the mound and 13-3 on the season overall. The righty had a stellar July as he posted an ERA of 1.32 and his August isn't so bad either. He's 2-0 with a 3.07 ERA for the month.

The Angels continue a four-game series with the Yankees Wednesday.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (6-11, 4.18)

It hasn't been the best season for the former two-time Cy Young award winner, but he's put in performances that harken back to better days recently. Over his last three starts, in which the 'under' is 3-0, the righty has an ERA of 1.23. Perhaps he's turning his season around.

The Giants are in Washington to face the Nationals Wednesday.

Dillon Gee New York Mets (8-8, 3.82 ERA)

The Mets righty has been putting in some fine performances if you haven't noticed. The under is 5-0 in his previous five start and Gee owns an ERA of 1.53 over that stretch. Over those five games, Gee has allowed zero earned runs twice and one earned run twice.

The Mets finish up their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday.
