    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Middle of night/morning lineup for the ESPN college basketball marathon, held November 11-12 all over the country........

1am--- Western Kentucky at Wichita State

    3am-- Akron at St Mary's

5am-- New Mexico State at Hawai'i

7am-- Hartford at Florida Gulf Coast

    9am-- Quinnipiac at LaSalle

    11am-- LSU at UMass

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) A Cuban 1B named Jose Dariel Abreu has apparently defected and could hit the major leagues next season; after the success Cespedes/Puig are having in the big leagues, Abreu could be looking at a contract in the $70-80M range. Red Sox would be a team with money that could use a 1B.

    12) Cuban OF Henry Urrutia got called up by the Orioles last month after running amok in the minors; he is hitting.283 in 46 AB’s, but with no walks and only one extra base hit. He is lot thinner than Cespedes/Puig and might not hit with enough power to be a corner OF, or a regular player.

    11) Have to feel bad for the football juniors/seniors at Arkansas State; HC Bryan Harsin is their 4th head coach in the last four seasons, after Freeze/Malzahn bolted for SEC jobs after each going 10-3 in one season in Jonesboro. They’ve won a lot of games, but have to feel at least a little like second-class citizens.

    10) Of the 14 SEC football teams, Kentucky/Tennessee are the only teams that haven’t been to a bowl the last two seasons. Vols have 123 starts back on an experienced offensive line this year.

You have to think QB Tyler Bray screwed up last winter by declaring for the NFL Draft (he wasn’t drafted) instead of playing his senior year for the Vols, and raising his draft stock. Bray is currently in training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.

    9) Surprising stats: Auburn/Ole Miss are only two SEC teams that won their last five bowl games. Utah Utes have a 13-4 record in bowl games.

    8) ESPN announced the schedule for its November 12 college hoops marathon, which is a holiday at Armadillo World HQ. Western Kentucky-Wichita and Akron-St Mary’s are on in the middle of the night. 7am game is Hartford-Florida Gulf Coast, 9am game is Quinnipiac-LaSalle.

    7) It bears repeating about the rapid rise of Florida Gulf Coast; they play in Atlantic Sun, a league Belmont dominated until they moved to the OVC last year. if Belmont stays in the A-Sun, Andy Enfield is still in Fort Myers, instead of raking in a $1M+ a year at USC. He got a great opportunity and ran with it, but sometimes you need to be a little lucky, too.

    6) FGCU hired former Kansas assistant Joe Dooley to take over for Enfield; tough act to follow, for sure. Hope he keeps the reins loose and lets the kids run- thats what made the team popular.

    5) This is how deep LSU’s football team is, how great a recruiter Les Miles is; they’ve finished in the top 12 in national special teams rankings five years in a row. That is not easy to do, but it speaks to the depth he has amassed in Baton Rouge.

    4) You look at the SEC this year, who has/doesn’t have experience returning in the offensive line, and Bama/LSU/Kentucky will be three least experienced OLs in the SEC, by far. The talent level at Bama and LSU will be way above Kentucky’s guys, but still, they’ll have veteran QB’s playing behind inexperienced offensive lines.

    3) Syracuse in the ACC; it just doesn’t make sense yet and it’ll make less sense when the basketball magazines come out.

    2) Hey its August 12 and the 76ers finally hired a coach, Spurs assistant Brett Brown. Gregg Popovich is going to be breaking in some new assistants this year- the Atlanta Hawks hired Mike Budenholzer as head coach.

    1) There is something oddly comforting knowing that at 9am on November 12, three months from now, I’ll be sitting in my palacial living room eating breakfast from McDonald’s while watching the Quinnipiac-LaSalle game. Some of us are more easily amused than others.

Best over/under bets of NFL preseason Week 2

If you’re tackling totals this NFL preseason this week, take a look at which teams lean towards the over or the under during Week 2 of the exhibition schedule.

      Records since 1995.

Best NFL preseason Week 2 over bets

Green Bay Packers (12-5 SU, 13-4 O/U in Week 2)

The Pack finished just 1-3 O/U in the 2012 preseason, but their lone 'over' result was Week 2. Green Bay was shutout 17-0 by the Arizona Cardinals in their disappointing preseason opener a week ago. Needless to say, the Pack had issues offensively, especially running the ball. QB Aaron Rodgers was effective in his one series, an 11-play, 86 yard drive. But it ended in futility after failing to punch the ball in the end zone on fourth-and-goal. The Packers have played over the total in seven-straight Week 2 preseason games. They will travel to St. Louis to face the Rams Saturday. The total is currently 40.5.

      Oakland Raiders (5-11 SU, 11-5 O/U in Week 2)

The Raiders are already 1-0 O/U after a 19-17 victory (total of 35.5) over the Dallas Cowboys in their preseason opener. Matt Flynn is on track to be the starting QB to begin the season, but Terrelle Pryor looked good against the Cowboys and gives the offense some different options when he is under center. The Raiders are in New Orleans to battle the Saints Friday. The total is currently 40. 5.

*The Raiders did not have a game in Week 2 in the 1999 preseason.

Best NFL preseason Week 2 under bets

      Miami Dolphins (10-7 SU, 6-11 O/U in Week 2)

After a 24-20 loss in the Hall of Fame Game, a result that went 'over' the total, the Dolphins kept the scoreline under the total with a 27-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. QB Ryan Tannehill looked good (5-for-9, 75 yards, one TD) but there is some concern as to why he didn't throw to new WR Mike Wallace - something they may look to remedy. Miami will face the Houston Texans in a Week 2 matchup Saturday. The total is 40.5.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-12 SU, 7-10 O/U in Week 2)

The Chiefs and New Orleans Saints played 'under' the 36.5-point total in Week 1 in a 17-13 Saints victory. The Chiefs offense looked promising going 80 yards on 14 plays in the opening drive. Alex Smith looked great completing 7-for-8 passes for 68 yards in his lone drive. The Chiefs host the San Francisco 49ers Friday. The total is currently listed at 40.

MLB Top 3: Hot 'over' pitchers on the mound Tuesday
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's Major League Baseball action features a trio of hurlers that have trended toward scorelines finishing over the total.

Here is a look at three pitchers to consider if you're looking to play totals.

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees (9-10, 4.72 ERA)

The burly Yankees southpaw has an ERA of 8.33 with 25 earned runs over 27 innings in his previous five starts; all of which have gone over the total. He has surrendered 25 homers on the year (only A.J. Griffin and R.A. Dickey have given up more - what is it with double initial pitchers?) and nobody has allowed more total bases (289).

The Yanks host the Los Angeles Angels Tuesday.

Ryan Dempster, Boston Red Sox (6-9, 4.67 ERA)

The 'over' is 6-0 in the Canadians' previous six starts. The Sox are 5-1 in the six games, primarily because they give Dempster the second-best run support in the bigs. The Sox are good for 5.78 runs of support when Dempster starts. Only Max Scherzer gets more support at 6.17 per game.

The Sox are in Toronto to face the Jays Tuesday.

Jordan Lyles, Houston Astros (4-6, 5.40 ERA)

The young Astros righty has been great fodder for 'over' bettors recently. The 'over' is 7-0-2 in Lyles' previous nine outings and is 12-4 on the season in his 16 starts.

The Astros are on the road to face the Oakland A's Tuesday.
