    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Lebron James went to jury duty in Akron Thursday. Seriously, he even brought a book to read during the delays. He got excused by the court, so the inevitable mob scene was avoided.

-- Steelers' WR Plaxico Burress tore his rotator cuff, could miss the season; at least he didn't shoot himself in the leg this time.

-- Texas Rangers put in a claim for OF Alex Rios, so White Sox have 48 hours to decide what to do; Rios doesn't hustle and makes $12M a year, they'll take a couple marginal prospects just to dump his salary.

-- Royals are 16-4 in last 20 games; Bruce Chen is 5-0, 1.79 as a starter. so I'm suggesting that someone needs to test him for PEDs. Soon.

-- Max Scherzer is 17-1, 2.84 this year; who saw that coming?

-- Tigers have won 12 in row, Braves 13 in row; going to be a circus in the Bronx tonight, with ARod playing first home game against red-hot Detroit.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.........

    13) I’m not a big fan of the ERA statistic, it rewards a pitcher if an error is made, even if it is his own error, but it doesn’t penalize him if a great defensive play saves his butt, which is an obvious inequity.

On the baseball page of this website, we quote RA, not ERA, any run a pitcher gives up counts against him. Just seems like a more accurate indicator of what happened.

    12) Wednesday in St Louis, Ricky Nolasco throws away a toss to first after a 30-foot roller in front of the plate, so the Cardinals have a guy on 3rd and two out—any runs that scored from that point on in the inning are unearned, and Nolasco gives up four straight hits and three runs.

Everything that happened was his fault, yet he got off the hook with three unearned runs; why?

    11) If you want to bet on a hole-in-one being made at the PGA this weekend, you could’ve gotten +$110; in the last three events at Oak Hill, there were seven aces.

    10) No Texas Longhorns on Big Monday this season? That seems odd, and an indication of how early defections to NBA hurt Rick Barnes’ program. Sometimes you can recruit too well; kids jumping to the NBA after one year of college can cripple a program, much like what happened to Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech.

    9) ACC games will replace Big East games on Big Monday this winter, which will be very odd, since Big East games (Raftery-Bilas-McDonough) were the anchor of Big Mondays for over 20 years.

ESPN should go back to a midnight Big Monday game too; no way either the Big West, Big Sky or WCC wouldn’t go for the added exposure.

Big East games will be on FOX Sports1, which debuts August 17.

    8) Colorado State gave hoop coach Larry Eustachy a contract extension up to $910,000 a year, with a $200K bonus if he makes the NCAA tourney.

    7) LSU-Wisconsin will play neutral site games in Houston in 2014 and at Lambeau Field in ’16; will be cool to see Les Miles munching on some grass from the frozen tundra.

    6) Three more Canadian kids will be trekking to Findlay Prep in Las Vegas to go to high school, including 6-7 wing Justin Jackson, one of the best players in the Class of ’16.

    5) Its hard to imagine that the college football playoff won’t wind up at eight teams; just too much money to leave on the table, with the four additional high-level (and high TV ratings games) an 8-game playoff would need.

    4) Cowboys are just 5-19 vs spread as a home favorite under Jason Garrett; they’re 5-12-1 vs spread in last 18 games they played where spread was 3 or less points.

    3) Redskins were favored in only two of their last 15 divisional home games; twice in five years, that’s remarkable.

    2) Packers are +65 in turnovers the last four years; last tme they were minus in turnovers was 2005, Mike Sherman’s last season as head coach.

    1) Braves’ 13-game win streak is longest in MLB since the A’s AL-record 20-game streak in 2002 that was depicted in the movie Moneyball.

NFL Games of the Year: Bucs could be FG faves vs. Fins

NFL Week 10 (Monday Night): Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5)

      Past History:
      Tampa Bay is 2-1 SU, 3-0 ATS, 2-1 O/U since 2000.

      Early look at the Dolphins:
Miami has a win total of eight this season. It was 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS on the road last year. The Fish come into this contest with a full 10 days off between games, playing a Thursday night contest vs. the Bengals the week before.

      Early look at the Buccaneers:
Tampa Bay has a win total of 7.5 this season and was 3-5 SU and 3-4-1 ATS at home last year. The Bucs will have had eight days off between games after playing at Seattle the week before.

      Where this line will move:
The oddsmakers have not given either team much of a shot at making the playoffs. Depending on injuries and what each team's record is coming into this contest, I wouldn't be surprised to see this line climb as high as -3 as the public naturally backs the home side between these middle-of-the-road clubs.

Big 12 conference preview: No top team means extra value

The Big 12 Conference has 10 teams and nine of them have a legitimate shot at a bowl berth in 2013-14. There’s no single dominant team but there are a bunch of good teams. This could be the most competitive conference in all of football this year.

Bill Snyder’s Kansas State Wildcats tied Oklahoma for the Big 12 title last year. Which teams will be fighting it out at the top this season?

Oklahoma State Cowboys (2012: 8-5 SU, 7-5 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +265
        Season win total: 9.5

Why bet the Cowboys: Wide receiver and kick returner Josh Stewart is the real deal. Stewart is going to drive a lot of opposing coaches crazy this season. Oklahoma State has two terrific safeties at the back of its secondary, so the pass defense should be much improved. The offensive line is one of the best in the conference.

Why not bet the Cowboys: The quarterback situation is strange. Oklahoma State can’t seem to settle on a quarterback and constant changes at this important spot often lead to problems. There isn’t much depth at the running back spot. The defense struggles to get pressure on the opposing quarterback.

Season win total pick: Under 9.5

        Texas Longhorns (2012: 9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +280
        Season win total: 9.5

Why bet the Longhorns: Texas has the most talented defense in the Big 12. In the end, it is usually defense that wins titles. Jackson Jeffcoat and Jordan Hicks should be great for this in 2013. The running back combination of Gray and Brown is going to be lethal. David Ash has all the weapons necessary to succeed.

Why not bet the Longhorns: Ash just hasn’t proven himself in the biggest games. He was surrounded by talented players last year, but he still struggled against top teams. Mack Brown’s team seems to be a serial disappointer when there is no one on the roster named Vince Young.

Season win total pick: Over 9.5

TCU Horned Frogs (2012: 7-6 SU, 5-8 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +360
        Season win total: 8

Why bet the Horned Frogs: TCU went 7-6 in its first year in the Big 12 despite a plethora of injuries. If the Horned Frogs stay healthy this year, you have to expect a big improvement. The Horned Frogs defense has a ton of speed and they are no longer extremely young on that side of the ball.

Why not bet the Horned Frogs: This is a really tough schedule for the Horned Frogs. They start the season against LSU, and going up against a top SEC team is never any fun. During the Big 12 season, they travel to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State. The offensive line is a question mark.

Season win total pick: Over 8

        Oklahoma Sooners (2012: 10-3 SU, 6-7 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +375
        Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Sooners: Oklahoma has five Big 12 titles in the last seven years. Betting on the Sooners inside the conference has made bettors a lot of money over the past few years. Oklahoma has won at least 10 games in 11 of Bob Stoops’ 14 years as head coach.

Why not bet the Sooners: The Sooners return just four starters on defense. Oklahoma is still trying to settle on a new quarterback and whoever it is will be a significant downgrade from Landry Jones. Expect the passing game to be way down from where it has been the past few seasons.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

        Baylor Bears (2012: 8-5 SU, 9-4 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +1400
        Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Bears: Art Briles is a very underrated coach. Even without Robert Griffin III, the Bears went 8-5 last season. Lache Seastrunk has the potential to be one of the best running backs in the nation and he’ll be running behind a good offensive line. Baylor has had some very solid recruiting classes the past couple years.

Why not bet the Bears: Bryce Petty has potential, but putting a new quarterback into this system might slow the team down a bit at first. The defense gave up 37.2 points per game last year and it’s nearly impossible to be a top team with a defense giving up that many points.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

Kansas State Wildcats (2012: 11-2 SU, 9-3-1 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +1500
        Season win total: 8

Why bet the Wildcats: The single best reason to bet on this team is Bill Snyder. Should we ever be surprised when his teams outperform preseason expectations? He is one of the best coaches in the country. Tyler Lockett and John Hubert give the Wildcats offense some real star power. The offensive line may be the best in the Big 12.

Why not bet the Wildcats: Replacing Collin Klein isn’t going to be an easy task. Will the Wildcats be able to pass enough to keep the opposition honest? The front seven on the defense is much weaker than it has been in recent years. Kansas State will likely have trouble slowing down the run and getting pressure on the quarterback.

Season win total pick: Under 8

Texas Tech Red Raiders (2012: 8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +2000
        Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Red Raiders: Kliff Kingsbury brings a lot of excitement to the program. It seems like the players are really pumped about lining up for their new head coach. Kingsbury was a very good quarterback here and he knows how to make this aerial attack work. Michael Brewer is a quarterback who should fit perfectly into this system.

Why not bet the Red Raiders: Texas Tech allowed 52 points or more in four of its last seven games. This defense is a bit better than it was a couple years ago, but it’s still a weakness. The Red Raiders have a tough schedule as they must travel to West Virginia, Texas, and Oklahoma in Big 12 action.

Season win total pick: Under 7.5

West Virginia Mountaineers (2012: 7-6 SU, 5-8 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +2000
        Season win total: 6

Why bet the Mountaineers: Dana Holgorsen’s system works great in this conference and the Mountaineers should always be able to put up plenty of points. The Mountaineers have two solid safeties at the back of their defense and that could lead to improvement defensively. West Virginia gets its toughest Big 12 opponents at home this season.

Why not bet the Mountaineers: The Mountaineers defense allowed opponents to convert on 46 percent of their third down attempts. West Virginia’s defense allowed 45 points or more in six of its last nine games. The offense lost all kinds of great playmakers. None of the wide receivers on this roster will make anyone forget about Tavon Austin or Stedman Bailey anytime soon.

Season win total pick: Over 6

Iowa State Cyclones (2012: 6-7 SU, 5-7-1 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +3500
        Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Cyclones: Iowa State has quickly become a competitive team under coach Paul Rhoads. The Cyclones are no longer the perennial cellar dweller in the Big 12. Iowa State plays extremely hard every single time out and never quits before the final whistle. The Cyclones have a very good home field advantage at Jack Trice Stadium.

Why not bet the Cyclones: Iowa State may be the least talented team in the Big 12. The Cyclones simply don’t have the talent they had in the last couple seasons. An argument could be made that Iowa State has the toughest schedule of any team in the Big 12. How is a young team going to be able to withstand this brutal schedule?

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

        Kansas Jayhawks (2012: 1-11 SU, 4-7-1 ATS)

        Odds to win conference: +8500
        Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Jayhawks: Kansas actually has a talented backfield with quarterback Jake Heaps and running back James Sims. Heaps was a solid quarterback at BYU and he should be a big upgrade for the Jayhawks offense. This team has a lot of veterans, so they should be better prepared than many of the young teams in this conference.

Why not bet the Jayhawks: Charlie Weis thinks his team stinks, so why should you bet on them? Kansas was just 1-11 last year and it really didn’t seem like this team was buying into Weis’ system at all. Kansas wide receivers caught a total of zero touchdown passes last year. It’s really hard to win in the Big 12 without any play makers on the outside.

Season win total pick: Under 3.5

          CFL Rankings: Week 7
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Last week's ranking in parentheses.

          1. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1) The Riders remain undefeated entering Week 7 and should be rested and ready following their bye week. Unfortunately, so will this week's opponent, the Calgary Stampeders. Saskatchewan took the first meeting this season at home thanks to a dominant second half. Friday night's showdown should be a beauty at McMahon Stadium.

          2. Calgary Stampeders (2) The QB carousel continues to spin around in Calgary, with Kevin Glenn expected to start Friday's game against Saskatchewan after Drew Tate suffered a setback in his recovery. There are those that believe Bo Levi Mitchell should be the man to lead the offense this week but John Hufnagel has elected to go with the proven veteran. Probably a wise choice against an opportunistic Riders defense.

          3. B.C. Lions (4) I'll bump the Lions up a spot this week as they showed me just enough in Monday's narrow win over Winnipeg. I do think it's only a matter of time before the B.C. offense gets rolling. Perhaps an extra week of practice will allow them to fine-tune. Defensively, the Lions have been good, but not great. Again, the bye week should serve them well in that regard.

          4. Toronto Argonauts (3) The Argos will have an opportunity to make a statement and take full control of the East Division on Thursday night in Montreal. They'll have Ricky Ray back in the fold but it sounds like WR Dontrelle Inman will be a no-go once again. RB Chad Kackert remains sidelined as well, but Curtis Steele filled in admirably in his first start last week.

          5. Montreal Alouettes (5) It will be interesting to see how the Als respond on Thursday in their first game following the dismissal of much-maligned and short-lived head coach Dan Hawkins. With WR Jamel Richardson and RB Brandon Whitaker sidelined, it's beginning to look a lot like 2012 all over again. We'll see who steps up and fills the void.

          6. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8) Last week's win in Edmonton had to feel awfully good for a Ti-Cats squad that has been ravaged by injuries and marred by its share of bad luck early in the campaign. They'll have a chance to build some solid momentum with a winnable road game in Winnipeg coming up following their bye week.

          7. Edmonton Eskimos (6) I like the fight the Eskimos have shown in recent weeks, but they're having a tough time getting over the hump with the personnel they have on board. I'm not sure they've ever recovered from the Ricky Ray trade last year. Until they find a quarterback to lead the offense in the long-term, they'll continue to struggle to reach the in column. Mike Reilly doesn't look like the answer.

          8. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7) Justin Goltz is the right man to lead the Bombers offense this season but he's going to need some guys to make plays for him moving forward. The Bombers came up just short in B.C. on Monday, thanks in large part to an inspired effort from the defense. The good news is, the East Division is still wide open but I suspect the Bombers will ultimately be the odd-team out.

Roughriders at Stampeders: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders (-3, 56.5)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders entered their bye week riding big winning streaks and the top two teams in the CFL will face off Friday in Calgary. Saskatchewan has not lost a game, outscoring its opponents by 96 points over the first five weeks, while the Stampeders’ only blemish came in a road loss to the Roughriders in Week 2. Calgary quarterback Drew Tate has not played since injuring his right forearm in that 36-21 setback, but will play Friday.

Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant will also return after missing one game with a sore foot, but it’s the running backs who have stolen the offensive spotlight for both teams. Roughriders running back Kory Sheets and Stampeders running back Jon Cornish are averaging more than 100 yards, and Sheets is on a record-breaking pace with 712 yards - the best five-game start in CFL history. Saskatchewan limited Cornish to 42 yards in Week 2, but if Calgary can find the same answer for Sheets, the Roughriders might not have a perfect record much longer.

                      TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (5-0, 5-0 ATS): Saskatchewan’s defence has allowed a league-low 87 points because of the leadership of players such as linebacker Renauld Williams, who has six of the team’s 22 sacks to go with an interception and team-leading 22 tackles. Slotback Geroy Simon is rounding into form after missing the start of the season because of injury, leading the team with five receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown in his second game with the Roughriders. Simon joins a crowded backfield that includes slotbacks Weston Dressler (team-leading 319 yards) and Chris Getzlaf (222), giving Durant plenty of options if Sheets gets shut down.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (4-1, 4-1 ATS): Tate threw five touchdowns and one interception in his two starts before being injured, completing 38-of-52 passes. Slotbacks Nik Lewis (285 yards) and Marquay McDaniel (211) have been the preferred targets for Calgary pivots, who have combined to run the second-most effective offence in the league, next to Saskatchewan. Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes, who leads the team with four sacks and has 40 in his career, will return to the lineup after missing time because of a wrist injury, while wide receiver Maurice Price will return after missing two weeks with a hamstring injury.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
                      * Roughriders are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
                      * Roughriders are 0-7 ATS in their last seven games in August.
                      * Stampeders are 21-6-1 ATS in their last 28 Friday games.

                      EXTRA POINTS:

                      1. Sheets leads the league with 790 yards from scrimmage. Cornish is third with 638.

                      2. Saskatchewan’s best start to a season came in 2008, when it was 6-0 and finished the regular season 12-6, but lost in the division semifinals.

                      3. Calgary is 2-0 at home; the Roughriders are 3-0 on the road.

The hottest bet of the summer you've been missing
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Road favorites in the CFL continue to be one of the hottest bets of the summer after the Toronto Argonauts downed the Montreal Alouettes Thursday 38-13.

The Argos easily covered the 2-point spread and road chalk improves to 7-1 straight up and against the spread in the CFL this season.

With only two games on the schedule this week, bettors won't have another opportunity to bet this spot in Week 7. Calgary is a home favorite against Saskatchewan Friday night at -3 as of early Friday morning.

What bettors need to know: Friday's NFL preseason action

New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-3.5, 36)

The quarterback battle between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith has been a hot topic at Jets camp, but we finally get a sampling tonight. Sanchez will get the start and play a couple of series at most and Geno should get the chance to play a series with the starting unit.

New RB Reggie Bush gets unleashed tonight and has reportedly looked great in camp. Bush gives Detroit a weapon on screen passes out of the backfield and the coaching staff has lined him up at WR in red zone plays as well.

New England Patriots at Philadelphia Eagles (-3.5, 42)

The two squads have held multiple joint practices together leading up to Friday's game. Brady will get a few snaps tonight and attempt to get acclimated with his new corps of targets to throw to.

Michael Vick will reportedly get the start for the Eagles, but he is locked in a QB battle with Nick Foles. Also look for rookie QB Matt Barkley to be featured prominently in the second and third quarters.

Miami Dolphins at Jacksonville Jaguars (+1.5, 35.5)

The Dolphins will certainly look to play better this time around than they did against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game. The Dolphins lost 24-20 and failed to cover as 3-point faves in the annual game last Sunday. Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline should be ready to play tonight, so the passing game should look much better.

Maurice Jones-Drew will not play tonight so starting running back duties will go to Jordan Todman. The second year RB out of UConn had three carries for eight yards in 2012.

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers (-2.5, 34)

The Bears got some bad news earlier this week when they learned that CB Kelvin Hayden will miss the entire season after tearing his left hamstring. Friday's game will give us the first glance of the relationship between quarterback Jay Cutler and head coach Marc Trestman.

Cam Newton and most of the Panthers' starters will see limited action tonight. Newton is expected to get 10-to-15 snaps before Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen take over quarterbacking duties.

Kansas City Chiefs at New Orleans Saints (-3, 37)

The new-look Chiefs get a test run tonight with head coach Andy Reid, QB Alex Smith and TE Anthony Fasano, among others, being watched closely. But perhaps even to be watched more closely will be the debut performance of the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft, RT Eric Fisher.

Sean Payton makes his return to coaching duties after serving his one year suspension. The Saints were 2-2 SU and ATS and 3-1 O/U in the 2011 preseason with Payton at the helm.

Houston Texans at Minnesota Vikings (-1, 35.5)

The two squads played in Houston in Week 16 last season, with the Vikings winning 23-6 and covering as 7.5-point road dogs. Houston is carrying a lot of injuries on defense and will feature a ton of inexperience in the game versus Minny. As a result, their already porous special teams could suffer.

Christian Ponder and the Vikings offense started camp in poor form but started to play with some zest toward the end of the first week of training camp. Ponder and new target Greg Jennings started to click and will look for that relationship to grow throughout the exhibition schedule, starting tonight.

Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers (-2, 35)

The Cardinals preseason opener should be used as a litmus test to see how new quarterback Carson Palmer gels with Larry Fitzgerald and the rest of the receiving corps. 'Zona QBs posted a passer rating of 39.8 on passes thrown to Fitzgerald last season.

QB Aaron Rodgers played the entire first quarter in last year's preseason opener, but that probably won't be the case tonight. The injury to LT Bryan Bulaga was a devastating hit to an offensive line that allowed Rodgers to be sacked 55 times a year ago (including playoffs). Reports claim that rookie David Bakhtiari will be utilized in the starting role either at the open LT or at RT spots.

Dallas Cowboys at Oakland Raiders (+1.5, 35.5)

The Cowboys got their preseason off to a great start by winning the Hall of Fame game 24-20 over the Dolphins and covering as 3-point dogs. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo did not play versus Miami, but will feature prominently against Oakland tonight.

Raiders starters are reportedly scheduled to play the entire first quarter, though RB Darren McFadden could potentially play a bit less. Also, all four Raider QBs will see action with Matt Flynn starting followed by Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and, finally, Tyler Wilson.
