    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- There were 16 teams in Atlantic 10 LY; there will be 13 this year and 14 the year after that. And we wonder why kids need calculators.

-- It took Canadian lefty Andrew Albers almost six seasons to make it to the majors, but he blanked the red-hot Royals for 8.1 innings in his MLB debut as the Twins won 7-0 in Kansas City.

-- Tigers won 10 of their last 11 games with Cleveland, which is why they are five games ahead of the Tribe in the AL Central race.

-- Stanford is going to retire John Elway's #7 jersey this fall; its been thirty years since Elway played for the Cardinal. What took them so long?.

-- Johnny Manziel got $7,500 for autographing 300 helmets; thats $25 a pop, if I can divide right at 3am. Hope it was worth it for him.

-- A quick Google search finds the cheapest signed Manziel helmet going for a hefty $800. Manziel should've gotten more than $25 a pop.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud...........

    13) Five of 14 clubs in Phil Mickelson’s bag at the PGA this week will be wedges: a pitching wedge, then 52-56-60-64 degree wedges. Short game is going to be paramount this week at Oak Hill.

    12) Green Bay Packers signed 30-year Vince Young as a backup QB this week; seems like an odd time to sign another QB, after the minicamps and all. Will be curious to see him play in exhibition games later this month.

    11) If NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes really lost $70M over the last four years, why the hell are they still in Arizona? Wouldn’t Hamilton-Saskatoon-Quebec City or even a second team in Toronto be a better option?

    10) Each NFL team is allowed to have 90 players in camp; 53 will make the team, with I think 47 dressing on game days. You can see when some of the better teams cut players, how the lower teams can scoop up their rejects and improve their talent pool.

    9) 49ers’ Patrick Willis broke his hand and had surgery already; if he isn’t at 100%, that’s a huge blow to their defense. Super Bowl losers havew generally had a rough time the following season.

    8) PG Angel Rodriguez transferred to Miami, either to get closer to home, or to get away from Bruce Weber; either way, he hasn’t applied yet for immediate eligibility, raising question as to whether he will play his senior year this year, when Miami will be rebuilding, or next year, when their talent base will be much stronger.

    7) This is how much money NFL teams have: Cleveland Browns spent $65,000 putting a soundproofed broadcast studio in their team HQs, which is used mainly for a 2-hour radio show on the ESPN affiliate in Cleveland.

    6) Racecar driver Tony Stewart broke his leg driving in a dirt track race at the world-famous Southern Iowa Speedway; no word on how long he’ll be out of his NASCAR ride. The leg has already been operated on.

    5) Mets finally brought up IF Wilmer Flores, who was hitting .321 at AAA Las Vegas but is said to be a man without a position. He’ll play 3B while David Wright’s hamstring recovers. Most of Mets’ prospects seem to be guys who can hit but aren’t strong defensively.

    4) Baseball underdogs of $170 or more are 74-131 this season, which doesn’t sound very good, until you realize it works out to a $1,591 profit, based on a $100 wager per play.

    3) Former Buccaneers’ LB, the great Derrick Brooks is President of the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena League.

    2) Marlins’ young ace Jose Fernandez struck out 27 of the last 58 batters he faced and won his last three starts.

    1) Under-reported story of the summer: a major league manager had a stroke in the ballpark before a game and has missed two weeks of action, but since he works in Seattle instead of New York/Boston, mainstream media could care less about Eric Wedge, who is expected to return to the dugout sometime next week. Lot of stress involved with running a ballclub.

NFL Games of the Year: Giants 4.5-point faves hosting Vikings

NFL Week 7: Minnesota Vikings at New York Giants (-4.5)

Past history: The Giants have won two Super Bowl titles since the 2007 season and these teams have met three times in that span. All three have come in Minnesota - sort of. The 2008 and 2009 meetings came in Week 17 games with the Vikings winning 20-19 in 2008 and 44-7 in 2009. The 2010 meeting was a Week 14 contest, although the game was moved from Minneapolis (Sunday) to the Detroit on a Monday, because the Metrodome roof collapsed under heavy snow early the previous day. The Giants won 21-3 in a game best remembered as a contest in which the 41-year-old Brett Favre sat out with a right shoulder injury that made his hand numb. It ended his NFL record streak of 297 straight starts.

Early look at the Vikings: Adrian Peterson came within nine yards of breaking the all-time single-season rushing mark last season (2,097) and is predicting he may exceed 2,500 yards in 2013. After back-to-back seasons of 6-10 and 3-13, the Vikings went 10-6 to grab the No. 6 seed in last year’s NFC playoffs. Repeating that performance in 2013 with a QB as mediocre as Christian Ponder seems unlikely.

Early look at the Giants: New York won its 2011 Week 17 game against the Cowboys, clinching the NFC East title with a 9-7 record. The Giants then went on to win their second Super bowl title in five years. The Giants went 9-7 again last year but this time their record was not playoff worthy. Many are predicting a return to the playoffs for the Giants in 2013 and I’m one of them.

Where this line will move: The Giants won a Super Bowl title in 2007 and again in 2011 but through last year (a span of six seasons), the team is a modest 29-19 SU at home and a poor 22-24-2 ATS. I’ve always preferred playing the Giants on the road but I’d need at least seven points in this one to consider taking the Vikings.

Three worst NFL preseason Week 1 bets since 1995

Losing an NFL preseason bet is like burning your hand in a fire. You knew it was hot, so why’d you touch it?

However, after a long summer stranded in baseball, preseason football is salt water to the shipwrecked sailor. You want to drink it up so bad.

If you’re thinking about getting in on the Week 1 preseason action, beware these three teams which have constantly fallen short of the spread during the opening slate of tune-up games. We eye their Week 1 records, going back as far as 1995, and how they look heading into this summer’s preseason:

Dallas Cowboys (5-12 SU, 4-13 ATS in Week 1)

Dallas didn’t look too bad in the Hall of Fame Game, despite all but four starters sitting out. The new 4-3 defensive scheme ran pretty smoothly for the first time around and the offense got a boost from the running game, which is a big plus. The Cowboys are 2-point favorites in Oakland for Week 1 of the preseason Friday. Quarterback Tony Romo is expected to play limited action as are the majority of Dallas’ first-stringers.

Philadelphia Eagles (6-10 SU, 4-10-2 ATS)

Former head coach Andy Reid was known for his lack of interest in the preseason and it shows in the Eagles’ Week 1 preseason mark. But now, with new coach Chip Kelly installing his up-tempo offense, Philadelphia may be putting a little more weight into its exhibition slate. The Eagles are 4-point favorites hosting New England Friday, and will likely march out five different QBs by the end of the night.

Detroit Lions (9-8 SU, 4-10-3 ATS)

There is pressure on coach Jim Schwartz to win right away in 2013, after last year’s disastrous four-win campaign. And that could mean giving more than two craps about the preseason. The Lions will reportedly run a cut-and-dry game plan, not customizing their attack to Week 1 opponents, the New York Jets. Detroit has new RB Reggie Bush atop the depth chart with Mikel Leshoure backing him up. The Lions could stretch the legs and go rush-heavy in order to build their ground game.

Big Ten conference preview: Ohio State leads the pack

The Ohio State Buckeyes went 12-0 last year in Urban Meyer’s first season in Columbus, but they weren’t eligible for the postseason. The Buckeyes are in the NCAA's good graces this year, but there are a lot of teams looking to knock off Ohio State.

Does anyone have what it takes to dethrone the Buckeyes?

Ohio State Buckeyes (2012: 12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS)

          Odds to win conference: -105
          Season win total: 11

Why bet the Buckeyes: Ohio State has nine starters back on offense and it should be much more comfortable with Urban Meyer’s system this year. Braxton Miller is one of football’s best playmakers. Many of the players from last year’s 12-0 team are back, so they know how to win football games. The Buckeyes clearly have the most complete team in the Big Ten.

Why not bet the Buckeyes: Everyone in the country is talking up the Buckeyes and there are going to be some big numbers on OSU this season. While Ohio State has a lot of talent on the defensive side, the linebacker position is extremely thin. Offseason trouble could make this team shorthanded at least at the beginning of the year.

Season win total pick: Over 11

          Michigan Wolverines (2012: 8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +500
          Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Wolverines: Devin Gardner getting to play a lot last year will help this team a ton in 2013. Fitz Toussaint is going to be better than he was last season. Michigan’s secondary is one of the best in the country again and that is very important in college football today.

Why not bet the Wolverines: Michigan is still lacking playmakers on the outside. Linebacker Jake Ryan was the heart and soul of the defense and he’ll likely miss most if not all of the season. Without Ryan, this defense won’t be as good as it was a year ago.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

Michigan State Spartans (2012: 7-6 SU, 5-8 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +700
          Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Spartans: Michigan State is absolutely stacked on defense. Seven of its nine top tacklers from a year ago are back. The Spartans should have the best defense in the Big Ten. Michigan State went 3-5 in the Big Ten last year, but didn’t lose a game inside the conference by more than four points. The Big Ten schedule is very friendly to Michigan State in 2013.

Why not bet the Spartans: A big question mark at quarterback. Andrew Maxwell didn’t get the job done last year and he’s being counted on again in 2013. Even more worrisome is the fact that this offense won’t have Le’Veon Bell to carry them to victories this year.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

          Nebraska Cornhuskers (2012: 10-4 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +700
          Season win total: 9.5

Why bet the Cornhuskers: Taylor Martinez has finally turned into a complete quarterback. He has always been one of the best running quarterbacks, but he has become a quality passer as well. Ameer Abdullah should have a breakout season in the backfield for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska doesn’t have to play Ohio State or Wisconsin this season.

Why not bet the Cornhuskers: What happened to Nebraska’s defense? This used to be one of the best defenses in the country, but now it is the reason this team can't be considered elite. Nebraska allowed 115 points in its final two games last season and this year’s defense looks even worse on paper.

Season win total pick: Under 9.5

          Northwestern Wildcats (2012: 10-3 SU, 12-1 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +900
          Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Wildcats: Pat Fitzgerald does an amazing job getting the most out of his players and he's starting to get much better talent in Evanston. Venric Mark is one of the most dangerous guys in the NCAA and he’ll touch the football a lot this year. The defense is no longer a weakness.

Why not bet the Wildcats: Northwestern drew a very tough Big Ten schedule. The Wildcats have to play both Ohio State and Wisconsin from the Leaders Division. Their November stretch, against Nebraska, Michigan, and Michigan State in three straight games, will be very difficult. The offensive line returns just two starters from a year ago.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

          Wisconsin Badgers (2012: 8-6 SU, 6-8 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +900
          Season win total: 9

Why bet the Badgers: Wisconsin lost only 10 lettermen from last year’s team, which went 8-6, but all of those losses were by seven points or less. Chris Borland is healthy again and he could end up being the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. James White will be great at the running back spot for Wisconsin.

Why not bet the Badgers: The Badgers don’t have a solid quarterback option. Joel Stave and Curt Phillips are battling for the job, but neither of them are game changers. Though the Badgers didn’t lose a lot of players, they did lose both RB Montee Ball and star linebacker Mike Taylor. It’s the team’s first year in a new system.

Season win total pick: Under 9

          Iowa Hawkeyes (2012: 4-8 SU, 4-8 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +4500
          Season win total: 6

Why bet the Hawkeyes: Iowa seems to be at its best when expectations are low and expectations haven’t been this low in a long time. The Hawkeyes may have the best trio of linebackers in the entire conference and that's worth a lot in the Big Ten. Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock should help complete the backfield nicely.

Why not bet the Hawkeyes: Who will be the starting quarterback? Cody Sokol will likely get the first chance under center, but there's definitely a quarterback competition in Iowa City. Iowa is very weak at the wide receiver spot and that certainly won’t help its new quarterback.

Season win total pick: Over 6

          Indiana Hoosiers (2012: 4-8 SU, 6-6 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +4800
          Season win total: 6

Why bet the Hoosiers: Indiana’s offense is loaded with talent and it all starts at the quarterback position. The Hoosiers have three very capable quarterbacks who would all do a great job in Kevin Wilson’s system. Indiana returns 19 starters from a team that surprised people by winning four games a year ago.

Why not bet the Hoosiers: Have expectations risen too quickly? Defensively, Indiana has a very long ways to go to be competitive in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers allowed 35.3 points per game last season. Nine starters return on the defense but that might not be a good thing when looking at the lack of overall talent.

Season win total pick: Under 6

Minnesota Golden Gophers (2012: 6-7 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +7500
          Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Golden Gophers: Jerry Kill is doing a great job getting this team to believe in his system. The fact that this team was able to get to a bowl game last year was a minor miracle. The Golden Gophers defense has improved by leaps and bounds in Kill’s first two seasons at Minnesota.

Why not bet the Golden Gophers: Minnesota drew a difficult Big Ten schedule. They must travel to Michigan, Northwestern, and Michigan State. Phillip Nelson completed less than 50 percent of his passes in 2012 and he's a big question mark at the quarterback spot. The offense averaged just 22.1 points per game last season.

Season win total pick: Over 5.5

          Purdue Boilermakers (2012: 6-7 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +9000
          Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Boilermakers: Darrell Hazell worked his magic at Kent State and he should be a great coach for the Boilermakers as well. Hazell was a longtime assistant at Ohio State, so he is familiar with the Big Ten. Purdue returns six of its top seven tacklers from a year ago.

Why not bet the Boilermakers: Purdue only returns five starters on the offensive side of the ball. The Boilermakers lost their top two quarterbacks as well as their leading rusher and leading receiver from last season. Purdue has a brutal non-conference schedule, which leads right into a very difficult Big Ten schedule.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

Illinois Fighting Illini (2012 2-10 SU, 3-9 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: +20000
          Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Illini: They can’t be worse than last year. Illinois had far too much talent to go winless in a weak Big Ten last season and it still has a decent amount of talent on this roster. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase is healthy and should be better in 2013.

Why not bet the Illini: Illinois misses out on the weak teams in the Big Ten and must play all of the top programs. The Fighting Illini seemed to be lost in Tim Beckman’s system last year and that might not change much in 2013. The defense gave up 32.1 points per game last season and it probably won’t be any better this year.

Season win total pick: Under 3.5

Penn State Nittany Lions (8-4 SU, 9-2-1 ATS)

Odds to win the conference: N/A (Ineligible for postseason play)
          Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Nittany Lions: Bill O’Brien stepped into a very tough situation and got his team to play very hard for him. You have to think that will just continue in the coming years. Penn State got one of the top quarterback recruits in the country in Christian Hackenburg.

Why not bet the Nittany Lions: Penn State lost a ton of talent from last year’s team. The Nittany Lions lost 32 lettermen and four of their top five tacklers from a year ago are gone. The defense was the strength of this team but their heart and soul must be replaced.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The best and worst bets against divisional foes in MLB
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winning divisional matchups are imperative to climbing the MLB standings at this point in the season. Teams looking to make a postseason push, or just hoping to get on the right track, need to handle their business against familiar foes with the schedule back loaded with divisional games.

Here are some of the best and worst divisional wagers in the major leagues, heading into Tuesday:

Pittsburgh Pirates (67-44 overall, 30-18 vs. NL Central)

A big part of Pittsburgh’s success has been its dominance over divisional rivals. The Bucs recently rolled the St. Louis Cardinals, winning four of five in the series. The Pirates have an upcoming three-game set with St. Louis and round out the schedule with 26 of their final 33 games coming against divisional opponents.

Toronto Blue Jays (52-60 overall, 18-30 vs. AL East)

The AL East is a beast of a division. Toronto was pegged to top the standings this offseason but things haven’t gone according to plan north of the border. The Blue Jays are the tackling dummies of the division and haven’t won a divisional series since sweeping Baltimore in three games at home back in June. Toronto has 12 more divisional games by the end of the month and close 2013 with 15 of its final 16 contests against the AL East.

Detroit Tigers (65-45 overall, 28-16 vs. AL Central)

The Tigers have leaned on their control over the AL Central to keep them at the top of the league standings. Detroit has owned divisional foes this season, recently sweeping the White Sox and defeating the Indians Monday night. The Tigers have a massive five-game home stand versus surging Kansas City in the middle of August and play 18 of their final 28 games inside the AL Central.

Chicago Cubs (49-62 overall, 16-31 vs. NL Central)

Take away the Cubbies’ terrible record versus divisional foes and they’re actually two games above .500. Chicago’s struggles against the NL Central hit rock bottom when it dropped three of four games to the Brewers last week. No one in the National League is missing the Houston Astros more than the Cubs right now. They have an upcoming nine-game stretch versus the Cardinals and Reds and wrap the season with 20 of the final 23 games versus the division.

Texas Rangers (63-50 overall, 31-14 vs. AL West)

Oakland may lead the AL West but even the A’s know which clubs runs the division. Texas is 8-5 against each Oakland and Seattle, 7-2 versus Houston and 8-2 against Los Angeles. The Rangers took two of three over the A’s this past weekend and opened a three-game set with a win over the Halos Monday. Texas plays a four-game series with the Astros later this week and finishes the year with 16 of 26 against the AL West.

                            Preseason Tidbits

                            August 8, 2013

Around the NFL, every team approaches the preseason differently. Some teams are working in an entire new coaching staff with new philosophies. Some teams have established quarterbacks while others have a competition among 2-3 players. Some just want to keep players healthy and don't show much of their offensive or defensive game plans. Knowing some of recent trends can help you find favorable matchups and get you off to a quick start before the regular season even kicks off. Enjoy our 'tidbits' for the NFL exhibition season.

-- Arizona Cardinals are 1-7 ATS in their last eight preseason games. They are under a new coaching regime. New head coach Bruce Arians is breaking in a new offense with a new quarterback, Carson Palmer. Arians was 3-1 ATS in the preseason as a member of Indy's coaching staff last year.

-- Buffalo Bills are 1-8 SU & 2-7 ATS in the last preseason games. Head Coach Doug Marrone is in his first season as an NFL head coach. He has an all new coaching staff with new offensive wrinkles. Expect the Bills to be more competitive as they break in a new offense with a heated battle between Kevin Kolb & EJ Manuel at quarterback.

-- Carolina Panthers are 1-10 SU & 3-8 ATS in the last 11 preseason road games. The Panthers haven't been strong on the road in preseason. They play at Philly on August 15 & at Baltimore on August 22.

-- Cincinnati Bengals are 1-6 ATS in the past seven preseason road games. Cincy will play its first preseason game on the road at Atlanta on August 8th and will be playing without top WR, AJ Green.

-- Denver Broncos are 1-5 ATS the past six preseason games as favorite. QB Manning won't see much action in the preseason, especially in the first couple of games. Expect a lot of uneven play from Brock Osweiler, Ryan Katz, and Zac Dysert splitting reps under center.

-- Detroit Lions are 9-2 SU & ATS the last 11 preseason games. Detroit has a proven backup QB in Shaun Hill and behind him Thaddeus Lewis has experience. This offense will stay strong the entire game with proven backup QB's. The Lions are also 7-3-1 OVER in the last 11 preseason games.

-- Green Bay Packers are 15-5 OVER the last 20 preseason games. Aaron Rodgers won't see a ton of plays, but there's a strong quarterback battle for the no. 2 spot between BJ Coleman and Graham Harrell. This offense has strong depth and we expect it to continue to put up points even with Rodgers on the bench.

-- Jacksonville Jaguars have played six straight preseason OVERs. Jacksonville has allowed 29.3 points per game over that stretch. New head coach Gus Bradley is a defensive specialist and will want to change that. The offense is still in rough shape with uncertainty at the QB position, so the Jags could be in for some low-scoring affairs in the preseason.

-- Kansas City Chiefs are 5-28-1 ATS in their last 34 preseason games. There is a new coaching staff but don't expect much of a change in their preseason woes. Head Coach Andy Reid never put a heavy emphasis on preseason in Philly as he went 9-13 ATS in his last 22 preseason games.

-- New England Patriots are 1-5 SU & 0-6 ATS their last six preseason games. New England hasn't put a lot of emphasis on preseason action under Bill Belichick. Tom Brady won't see many snaps and they'll opt to keep their top playmakers healthy. The Pats are also 45-27-1 OVER under Belichick in the preseason.

-- New York Giants UNDER is 8-2 their last 10 preseason games. The GMen have never been big on showing a lot of their starting offense in the preseason. Eli Manning won't see a ton of action and coaches will want to keep star WR's Cruz & Nicks healthy. Expect more low scoring games as they try to get their swagger back on defense as well.

-- New York Jets are 0-5 SU & ATS past 5 preseason games. Coaches are trying to determine if rookie QB Geno Smith is a better option than the embattled Mark Sanchez. Both Smith and Sanchez will see a good share of reps under center. And we don't expect stellar results from either.

-- Oakland Raiders are 2-8 SU & ATS past 10 preseason games. There isn't a ton of talent on this team and very little depth to speak of. QB Matt Flynn will try to hold off Terrelle Pryor and rookie Tyler Wilson. None of the three QB's are great and the receiving corps is very weak. It'll be tough to score and the Raiders' woes may continue this preseason.

-- Pittsburgh Steelers are 6-1 SU & 5-2 ATS in their past seven preseason games. Pittsburgh has also won 11 straight preseason home games since 2007.

-- St. Louis Rams are 11-3 SU & ATS past 14 preseason games. St. Louis is the buzz-team of the summer. A lot is expected from this up & coming team and the excitement could spill over into another solid preseason.

-- Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is a strong 19-9-1 in preseason action (4-0 in 2012). He has a strong stable to QB's to work with as well. Tavaris Jackson and Brady Quinn compete to backup star sophomore Russell Wilson.

-- Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 9-2 ATS past 11 preseason road games. Tampa Bay plays at New England on August 16th and at Miami on August 26th. The Bucs apparently aren't sold on Josh Freeman as the starting QB of the future, so expect rookie Mike Glennon to get a long look under center.

-- Washington Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan is a career 44-34-2 ATS and 50-30 OVER in preseason games. Star QB Robert Griffin III is not expected to take any reps in the preseason.
