    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Seattle is close to Canada, so when the Blue Jays visit Safeco Field, lot of times (like Monday) Toronto fans are louder than Mariner fans.

-- Tigers scored four times in 9th inning to break Cleveland's heart, 4-2.

-- Milwaukee's Tyler Thornburg was 0-9 this year in 15 AAA starts, but in his first two MLB starts this season, he allowed one run in 12 IP.

-- Six of ten football teams in Big X Conference got at least one first place vote in the pre-season poll. Should be an interesting league.

-- When Vernon Wells started at 1B last night, it was the first time in his 17-year professional career that he played first base.

-- Andy Pettitte has now allowed at least one first inning run in each of his last seven starts, longest streak in MLB this season.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

    13) Time Warner Cable is in a standoff with CBS over rights fees; NFL starts in four weeks. Hard to believe they won’t lose a lot of customers if they haven’t restored CBS (AFC games) by then. CBS also has SEC college football and the US Open tennis tournament coming up, too, as well as the PGA this weekend.

    12) Bad news for the Packers: LT Bryan Bulaga, shifted to left tackle to shore up protection for Aaron Rodgers, has probably torn his ACL, which would end this season for him.

    11) The average possession in college basketball last year lasted 18.1 seconds; there is no need for a shorter shot clock- that would make the game more like the NBA, which wouldn’t be a good thing with less-skilled players than the NBA has.

    10) Cardinals are still hitting .339 as a team with runners in scoring position, an amazing average- if they ever all go into a slump at once, that could cost St Louis a division title. For right now though, .339 is an astronomical figure.

    9) Last season, NFL kickers tried 1,303 PATs and missed six of them. Not a lot of drama there.

    8) Ike Davis update: Somehow, he still plays 1B most every day, especially now with David Wright hurt, since they can play Josh Satin at 3B. Davis is batting .188 with 25 RBI; he’s come to bat with 178 men on base and knocked 19 of them in (his six HRs mean he knocked himself in six times.

He’s come to bat with a man on 3rd base 37 times and only knocked the guy in 10 times. Not good, but he still plays most every day. Go figure.

    7) NFL coaches come from all over: Chip Kelly, Mike Smith and Gus Bradley are NFL head coaches who spent 10+ years as assistant coaches at: Kelly: New Hampshire, Smith: Tennessee Tech, Bradley: North Dakota State. You wouldn’t think that was possible.

    6) There are four current major league managers who have the most wins for the franchise they work for now: Joe Maddon-Charlie Manuel-Mike Scioscia and Ron Washington.

    5) Eagles-Patriots will practice against each other this week, before playing each other in a preseason game later this week. This happens now and then in training camp, usually once per team.

How does this affect how you handicap the game? You’d think it would make for a chippier, more physical game, but not sure how that translates to handicapping the outcome.

    4) If Johnny Manziel is suspended for this season because of the autograph kerfuffle, Texas A&M’s over/under win total for the season is expected to drop from 9.5 to either 7 or 7.5.

    3) With Nelson Cruz suspended for 50 games, the Texas Rangers’ odds jumped from 12-1 to 16-1 to win the World Series.

    2) Cleveland Indians lead major leagues with 15 shutouts this season; last time they led the big leagues in shutouts was 1956.

    1) Last week, tickets for Friday night's Bronx-Detroit game were going for just over $80; as of Monday afternoon, the price had rised to just over $89.

No one these days will admit to liking ARod, but the ticket brokers sure do. Going to be interesting to hear the reaction he gets Friday night.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Lookahead spot

The SEC pecking order goes like this: Alabama and everyone else. Among “everyone else” are Georgia and LSU, who clash in a Week 5 contest that will likely eliminate one of these pigskin powers from the BCS conversation. Books have the Bulldogs as 4.5-point home favorites. Georgia has one of the toughest opening schedules in the land, taking on Clemson (-2.5) and South Carolina (-5) in the first two games of the season.

Sandwiched between those tests, a Week 3 bye and the LSU game are the lowly North Texas Mean Green in Week 4. North Texas went just 4-8 SU last year and moves from the Sun Belt to the C-USA in 2013. The Mean Green have been just good enough to cover the spread against some heavyweights the past few years, taking ATS wins versus LSU, Alabama and Clemson. UGA will be giving a pile of points and undoubtedly looking past North Texas to LSU the following week.

      Letdown spot

It’s been a rough offseason for the Super Bowl favorites. The Denver Broncos have had one of the more drama filled summers, with DUIs, possible suspensions and injuries to the offensive line slowing the team’s progress. It’s that last one that has the Broncos worried the most and could be the reason why Peyton Manning doesn’t touch a football this preseason.

Denver, which was already dealing with injuries to the o-line, lost starting center Dan Koppen for the season and is scrambling to fill gaps in its pass protection. According to ESPN, the team won’t risk throwing Manning to the wolves during exhibition games, especially in the Broncos’ preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers Thursday (+3). Backup Brock Osweiler could get extra snaps in the warmup games with Denver trying to keep Manning clean and healthy for Week 1.

      Schedule spot

The Los Angeles Sparks are one of the worst road bets in the WNBA and are currently in the midst of a five-game away trek, which started in Tulsa and Washington last week. Los Angeles, which is 8-12 ATS overall and just 3-6 ATS as a visitor, split both of those road games going 1-1 SU and ATS, including a loss to the last-place Shock, 96-89 as a 9-point road favorite, Friday.

The Sparks have three more road tests this week, starting in Connecticut Tuesday night. Oddsmakers have set L.A. as a 4.5-point road favorite. Following that stop, Los Angeles travels to Indiana Thursday and New York Saturday. The Sparks score 85.5 points per home game but just 79.6 on the road, shooting just 30 percent from 3-point range, compared to nearly 39 percent at home.

NFL Games of the Year: Playoff race makes Ravens live dog vs. Pats

NFL Week 16: New England Patriots at Baltimore Ravens (+2.5)

Past history: John Harbaugh (head coach) and Joe Flacco (QB) both came to Baltimore in 2008 and from 2009-12, the Ravens have met the Pats six times. The Pats are 2-1 SU in the regular season but are 1-2 SU (0-3 ATS) in the three postseason meetings, all of which were played in New England.

Early look at the Patriots: While there are many changes in New England, the Pats remain defined by the duo of head coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady. The two helped lead New England to Super Bowl wins to cap the 2001, 2003 and 2004 seasons, winning nine straight postseason games. That duo extended its postseason win streak to 10 in the 2005 season but since that win, have gone 7-7 in postseason games (just 4-10 ATS), including losing Super Bowls to the Giants in both the 2007 and 2011 seasons. The Pats remain the class of the AFC East (not saying much), so expect Belichick and Brady to be back in the playoffs in 2013.

Early look at the Ravens: Every Super Bowl champion faces a tough task the year after winning it all (last back-to-back champs were the Pats in ‘03-‘04). However, few defending champs have faced the kind of turnover and changes that have beset this current Ravens team. Joe Flacco’s incredible postseason (1,140 yards with 11 TDs and 0 INTs) earned him a $120 million contract in the offseason but I doubt anyone expects Flacco to replicate that kind of performance week-in and week-out in the 2013 regular season.

Where this line will move: This meeting comes late in the season and the Pats will likely have already secured the AFC East division title. In comparison, the Ravens will very likely be in a life-and-death playoff fight in the AFC North. If that’s the case, I’m taking the home dog.

Three best NFL preseason Week 1 bets since 1995

Betting on Week 1 of the NFL preseason is a bet on randomness. Teams may or may not play their starters. And if they do, it’s only for a few sets.

Second, third and even fourth-string players will decide your fate, so why not wager on teams that have shown some consistency in an otherwise chaotic stretch of schedule.

We look at the best Week 1 NFL preseason bets since 1995 and how those teams look heading into the 2013 exhibition calendar.

Denver Broncos (10-7 SU, 12-4-1 ATS in Week 1)

The Broncos have a laundry list of offseason issues and may be just trying to get through the preseason without adding to those troubles. Reports out of camp state Peyton Manning may see limited action this summer, with the offensive line missing some key cogs. Denver smoked Chicago 31-3 in last year’s preseason opener and is a 3-point underdog at San Francisco this Thursday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-6 SU, 12-5 ATS in Week 1)

When you read headlines like “Bucs Just Hoping To Survive Preseason”, it doesn’t instill the greatest confidence in Tampa Bay bettors. The Buccaneers’ No. 1 priority is making sure everyone sees Week 1, which could mean plenty of play for third and fourth-string scrubs this summer. The Bucs beat Miami 20-7 as 3-point dogs in Week 1 last preseason and are 3-point home faves hosting Baltimore Thursday.

Seattle Seahawks (13-4 SU, 10-7 ATS in Week 1)

Seattle has the same ATS mark in Week 1 as the Titans and Bengals, but we focus on the Seahawks because they seem to give a crap about winning the warm-ups. Last year, Seattle beat Tennessee 27-17 as a 3-point home favorite in Week 1, en route to a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS preseason. This time around, the Seahawks are plugging the hole at WR left by Percy Harvin’s injury. Sidney Rice is also nursing a bum knee, so the Seahawks' passing game could have its wings clipped this preseason. Seattle is a 2.5-point road favorite at San Diego Thursday.

NFL betting: AFC East teams' awful ATS trend

The Miami Dolphins failed to cover as 3-point faves in a 24-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game Sunday.

The failure to cover the spread harkens back to a dismal 2012 preseason campaign for AFC East teams.

The Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and New York Jets finished the 2012 exhibition schedule a combined 1-15 ATS. The Bills were the only team to cover as they were 3-point dogs in a 7-6 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Miami, New England and New York all finished 0-4 ATS.

The preseasons schedule resumes Thursday, but the AFC East squads are in action on Friday.

The Jets are currently 4.5-road dogs as they face the Detroit Lions. The Pats are similar 4.5-point road underdogs in Philly to take on the Eagles. The Dolphins' second game is on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars with the that matchup currently a pick 'em. Finally, The Indianapolis Colts host the Bills to finish off the week Sunday. The Bills are 3-point road dogs in that game.
