    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Eight NFL teams changed coaches last winter; of the eight new coaches, only Andy Reid has been an NFL head coach before. Interesting.

-- CC Sabathia's last four starts: 19.2 IP, 27 runs allowed.

-- David Wright pulled a hamstring Friday night, looks likely he'll wind up on the DL. Mets called OF Mike Baxter up late Friday night.

-- Jake Peavy makes his Red Sox debut against Arizona Saturday. Snakes were one of the other teams trying to trade for Peavy.

-- Dodgers have won 12 straight road games. Very impressive.

-- Time-Warner dumped CBS in some mjaor cities, leaving 3,000,000 or so viewers without the ability to see Eldrick Woods protect his 7-shot lead in Akron this weekend. Only five weeks until the NFL starts on CBS.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Trying to figure out the meaning of life.........

    13) Eagles already lost WR Jeremy Maclin for the year, now WR Riley Cooper could very well get cut for his stupid comments this week; interesting to see how Chip Kelly handles this as a rookie coach. Locker room dissension is no way to start your tenure as a head coach; from what I know about this, if I’m Kelly, I cut Cooper and move on.

Think that scenario has the least downside for Philly.

    12) Thursday night was the second time this season Seattle’s bullpen lost a game it was leading by 6+ runs in a Felix Hernandez start—not good.

    11) Second Wild Card in AL is 12 games over .500, with three teams right on their heels; Cincinnati is the second NL Wild Card at 10 games over .500, but they’ve got a 3.5-game lead over next closest team. Looks like there could be three playoff teams from the NL Central this season.

    10) Syracuse is thinking of refiguring their court for their Duke home game this season, so they can set a new on-campus attendance record- they would put the court in the middle of the football field, instead of across one end zone. I wouldn’t do it—it’ll change the shooting backgrounds drastically, and lessen their home court advantage, though the accountants could care less about home court advantage.

    9) Texas Longhorns landed Jordan Barnett, a top 100 basketball recruit in the Class of ’14; this wouldn’t normally be big news, but Rick Barnes has been hurt by early defections to the NBA and his program has suffered for it, which has hurt recruiting. This is a good get for him.

    8) Reno-Tahoe Open on PGA Tour switched to the unusual Stableford scoring system, which awards points for birdies/eagles and subtracts them for bogeys. An eagle is five points, a birdie two points. Andres Romero is the leader by a point after two rounds.

There used to be a tournament in Colorado called The International that used this system, but they went out of business a few years ago.

    7) It has rained so much at Redskins’ training camp this week, they had a helicopter flying low over the practices fields Friday morning, trying to dry the sod out. Wonder how much that cost? Zero; they did it for free.

    6) Jonny Gomes has been part of 26 walk-off wins this year and last; 11 this year in Boston, 15 last year with the A’s. He is a great teammate who was a big help in Oakland LY.

    5) I can personally attest to the idea that people in Chicago get annoyed if you put ketchup on hot dogs; in October, 2003, I asked for ketchup at a place in suburban Chicago and the person I was with got annoyed at me. Seriously. I didn’t ask why. Whats wrong with ketchup?

    4) I’ve always wondered this: do kids with unusual last names grow up to become better spellers than kids with easy names? For instance, would Mike Krzyzewski be a better speller than Bill Self? These are the kind of questions that gnaw at me, I can’t help it.

    3) Arizona Wildcat football players moved into a new locker room/practice facility this summer, which should help morale; if they get productive QB play from whomever emerges from their QB competition, that would help even more. RichRod will win in Tucson, just a question of when.

He wasn’t the best fit for staid Michigan, but he is a quality coach.

    2) Dallas Cowboys might sit Tony Romo for the Hall of Fame Game Sunday night, just because their OL is so banged up, they don’t want to subject Romo to any unnecessary hits.

Five exhibition games is too many, anyway; so is four, for that matter.

    1) I was reminded Thursday that August 1st was the 27th anniversary of my first-ever trip to Las Vegas, a drive in from Anaheim. There was a sign in the desert that says “Turn your air conditioner off or your car will overheat.”

It was 112 when we pulled into Vegas that day. I tried to bet a Mets-Expos game, but was screwed up on the time change- the game was already in the 5th inning. Shtoooopid. I've gotten better as a traveler since then.

Quite an experience the first time you see all those lights, hear the music and the slot machines, see everything that is Las Vegas. I highly recommend it.

NASCAR betting: GoBowling.com 400 at Pocono preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to the “Tricky Triangle” for the GoBowling.com 400 at Pocono Raceway. The unique 2.5-mile tri-oval track at Long Pond, PA is unlike any other course on the Sprint Cup calendar, presenting some betting value for racing fans.

      Favorite: Jimmy Johnson (+325)

Even if you take away Johnson’s success at Pocono, it’s nearly impossible not to have him at the top of the NASCAR odds board this season. The No. 48 car is running away with the points lead and is coming off a runner-up finish at Indianapolis last weekend. Add to that, Johnson’s average finish of 9.0, two wins (one in this year’s June race) and 15 Top 10 finishes in 22 races at Long Pond, and you’re paying a premium for J.J. this Sunday.

      Live dog: Jeff Gordon (+1,150)

Gordon is getting great odds at Pocono, where he sits only second to his teammate Johnson in terms of success. The No. 24 team has rolled into Victory Lane six times at the “Tricky Triangle” – including last August’s race - and boasts an average finish of 10.2. Gordon is picking up momentum in recent races, finishing inside the Top 10 in four of his last five starts and cracked the Top 10 in the points thanks to a seventh-place showing at the Brickyard last weekend.

      Long shot: Ryan Newman (+1,950)

“The Rocket Man” posted a statement win at Indianapolis, just two weeks removed from losing his ride for the 2014 season. Newman caught the attention of many teams but may need to continue his winning ways to land a new team. He’s come to the right place. Pocono has been kind to Newman, who owns an average finish of 12.4 and a victory there in 2003. Stewart-Haas racing did plenty of testing at the tri-oval, which runs very similar to Indianapolis, and the motivation of finding a new job and a wild card spot in the Chase is reason enough to like Newman at these odds.

Key stat: Jimmie Johnson won the Party in the Poconos 400 back in June. Only six drivers have swept both races at Pocono and Johnson is one of them, winning both events at Long Pond in 2004.

      Notable quotable:

"Pocono is fun, you just get up on the wheel there because all three corners are different and they change throughout the race. I’ve had success at Pocono in the past and I think we did really well there the last time (early June). Qualifying got rained out and we started 20th and then raced straight up to seventh immediately. Then we hit a brick wall and were stuck in seventh all race long and even finished in seventh.” – Kyle Busch told MotorSport.com.

Odds to win the GoBowling.com 400

      Jimmie Johnson 13-4
      Denny Hamlin 13-2
      Tony Stewart 15-2
      Kasey Kahne 17-2
      Jeff Gordon 23-2
      Kyle Busch 23-2
      Matt Kenseth 23-2
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 33-2
      Kurt Busch 33-2
      Brad Keselowski 18-1
      Ryan Newman 39-2
      Kevin Harvick 39-2
      Carl Edwards 20-1
      Greg Biffle 23-1
      Joey Logano 23-1
      Clint Bowyer 55-2
      Juan Montoya 33-1
      Martin Truex Jr. 33-1
      Jamie McMurray 44-1

Three most profitable NFL preseason over bets

NFL teams use the preseason schedule as a chance to stretch their legs, work in new offenses or defenses and fill gaps in the depth chart. All those factors can give totals bettors a headache.

Keeping a close eye on the head coach’s gameplan heading into an exhibition game is vital to betting the over/under. And, perhaps knowing which NFL clubs have constantly cashed in for one side or the other is good knowledge to have.

We look at the best over bets during the NFL preseason since 1995.

        Best preseason over bets

        Jacksonville Jaguars (41-27 SU, 41-25-2 O/U)

The Jaguars posted a 3-0-1 over/under mark during last summer’s preseason tilts, and are 6-1-1 O/U the past two exhibition slates. Jacksonville has one of the worst defenses in the league, ranked 30th in yards allowed and 29th in points against in 2012. A QB controversy between Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne and the return of RB Maurice Jones-Drew could spark some life in the Jags offense this preseason.

        Seattle Seahawks (41-27 SU, 41-26-1 O/U)

The Seahawks offense emerge in the second half of the 2012 season, with QB Russell Wilson playing beyond his years. Seattle was hoping to have explosive WR Percy Harvin burning up the sidelines but may have lost its new weapon for the entire season. The Seahawks defense was one of the best in the league last season and with the offense looking to fill the gap in the receiving corps, Seattle may go against the over/under grain this preseason.

        San Diego Chargers (38-30 SU, 40-27-1 O/U)

The Bolts seem like a forgotten team this offseason. Quarterback Philip Rivers has fallen out of favor with fans and could be singing for his supper this year. New head Mike McCoy is picking up the pace in San Diego, introducing a little speed to a Chargers offense that seemed stuck in the mud in 2012. Those no-huddle offenses could keep the points coming and gas out opposing defenses which are yet to get into game shape. The Bolts have gone 2-2 over/under the past three preseasons.

        Indianapolis Colts (28-39 SU, 39-37-1 O/U)

The Colts went 3-1 over/under during Andrew Luck’s first preseason run and proved they belonged among the AFC title contenders, posting the seventh most-potent pass game in the NFL (258 yards per game). Indianapolis added some veteran experience and depth at QB this offseason, bringing in Matt Hasselbeck. He’ll keep the offense clicking after Luck takes a seat in limited preseason action. The Colts were 3-1 O/U during last year’s exhibition calendar.

Exposing the Top 25: Where the new NCAAF poll went wrong

Each week throughout the college football season, Covers Expert Jesse Schule will dissect the new Top 25 rankings, looking for betting value. He'll showcase the most overrated team, along with the most underrated ranked team, and an unranked squad that he feels should be in the Top 25.

With the first Coaches Poll coming out this week, we don’t waste time telling you where the Top 25 went wrong:

Most underrated Top 25 team: USC Trojans (7-6 SU, 3-10 ATS)

At this time last year, the Trojans were at the top of all the polls as an early favorite to win the national championship. Their season started to take a turn for the worse when they lost to Stanford in Week 3, and losses to Arizona, Oregon, UCLA and Notre Dame would soon follow. After a disappointing 2012, they lose starting quarterback Matt Barkley and star wideout Robert Woods.

It's easy to see why everyone is down on the Trojans, but they return eight starters on offense and seven on defense from a team that came into 2012 with such lofty expectations. While they have plenty of questions at the quarterback position, RB Silas Redd and WR Marqise Lee will give them a pair of potent weapons on offense. Southern Cal opens the season in Hawaii and then returns home to host Washington State and Boston College. This team should cruise through September and rise in the rankings.

Most overrated Top 25 team: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-1 SU, 7-6 ATS)

The Irish ran the table in 2012, but along the way they were fortunate to win some close games that easily could have gone the other way. They lost Manti Te'o to the NFL draft and it looks like they will also be without QB Everet Golson because of academic issues.

Notre Dame has a tough schedule, hosting Oklahoma, Michigan State and facing Michigan on the road in September. I wouldn't be surprised to see them fall out of the rankings during the first month of the season.

Unranked team that should be ranked: Virginia Tech Hokies (7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS)

The Hokies have a nightmare matchup in Week 1, hosting the defending champion Crimson Tide. Once they get that out of the way, the schedule appears to be very manageable. They will have a new look offense and a defense that returns eight starters after finishing among the Top 20 in the nation last year.

Logan Thomas is back under center after a disappointing season, but he finished the season strong with wins over Boston College and Virginia, and an overtime victory against Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl. If the Hokies can find their running game, they should be able to win their share of ballgames in 2013.
