    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some Week 1 NFL trends for you to consider.........

-- Seahawks lost their last six road openers (0-8 vs spread last eight).

-- Eight of Miami's last eleven home openers went over total.

-- 11 of Giants' last 13 road openers went over the total.

-- Under is 13-3 in Tennessee's last sixteen road openers.

-- Dolphins lost eight of their last nine road openers.

-- Denver is 9-4 vs spread in its last thirteen home openers.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts as August starts.........

    13) Tommy John had “Tommy John surgery” when he was 32; before the operation, his career record was 124-106 in 318 career starts. After the operation, he was 164-125, in 382 starts.

What an amazing career he had, pitching into his late 40’s. In reality, he had two different careers, divided by the surgery.

    12) If every major league team stopped giving guaranteed $100M+ contracts to players, the union would howl, but how many of these deals work out well? ARod? Pujols? Josh Hamilton? Vernon Wells? Carl Crawford? Wouldn’t it be smart business not to break the bank on 1-2 players?

    11) New York Giants open the season in Dallas, where they’ve won their last four visits, scoring 35 ppg. Interesting first game for Monte Kiffin as Cowboys’ DC, after he got canned by his son at USC.

    10) Didn’t realize that Manning Bowl III is Week 2 in Swamp Stadium; Peyton won the first two, playing for the Colts (26-21/38-14). This will probably be the last Manning Bowl, unless they met in the Super Bowl.

    9) Toronto’s Mark Buehrle has started 418 major league games on the mound and has never been on the DL, not even once. Like to see that.

    8) Didn’t realize that former Cardinal teammates Matt Holliday and Albert Pujols were born one day apart in January, 1980.

    7) Speaking of St Louis, the football Cardinals went 42-29-1 from 1973-77 under Don Coryell, a brilliant coach; for some reason they canned him, then went 23-41 the next four years, while Coryell moved on to the Chargers, where he was 72-60 in nine years.San Diego went 30-49 in the five years after Coryell left.

A great innovative mind, especially on offense, Coryell is one of the more underappreciated NFL coaches of our time. One of his best teams in San Diego wound up playing the AFC title game in ridiculously cold weather in Cincinnati, which crippled their offense- that was Coryell’s best shot at the Super Bowl, and it underlines how misguided it is to have the Super Bowl in New Jersey this season.

    6) Yadier Molina is headed to the DL (knee); Cardinals are 18-22 in last 40 games he didn’t play. They’re 132-84 during that time, when he plays.

    5) When the Pelicans-Wizards play an NBA exhibition game in Rupp Arena October 19, three of the ten starters (Davis-Miller-Wall) will be former Kentucky Wildcats. Pretty good alumni group there.

    4) I’ve been debating this in my head the last couple days, and I’m inclined to answer yes: Is Ichiro Suzuki the best defensive outfielder I’ve ever seen? Clemente-Kenny Lofton-Garry Maddox come to mind, but no one charges the ball and gets his throws off quicker than Ichiro.

    3) Long game in Boston Wednesday, with Red Sox winning in 15 innings; Boston bullpen allowed only one run in eight innings of work.

    2) Andy Pettitte allowed at least one first inning run in each of his last six starts, the longest such streak in the big leagues this season.

    1) Mike Trout reached base all ten times in the Angels’ losses at Texas Monday-Tuesday. Too bad he can’t pitch.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Bama big home faves vs. Vols

NCAAF Week 9: Tennessee Volunteers at Alabama Crimson Tide (-28)

Past history: Historically, these longtime SEC rivals would always play on the third Saturday in October. However, as we all know, the times they are a changin’. Alabama is 6-0 SU (5-1 ATS) vs. Tennessee since the arrival of Nick Saban in 2007 and the Vols haven’t scored more than 17 points against the Tide in the last nine matchups.

Early look at Tennessee: Phil Fulmer was forced out at Knoxville after the 2008 season, despite a terrific 17-year run in which he led the Vols to the first-ever BCS Championship in 1998. Lane Kiffin replaced him and went 7-6 but then jumped ship for USC. Derek Dooley was a surprise hire and was a major disappointment, going 15-21 before being fired with one game to go in the 2012 season. Butch Jones (former Central Michigan and Cincinnati head coach) takes over and many people think the Vols could be a sleeper in the SEC East in 2013, but I’m not one of them.

Early look at Alabama: What can one say about a program which has won three of the last four national championships? A.J. McCarron is back at QB with two national championships on his resume, along with a 25-2 record as a starter (49 TDs and just eight INTs in his career). Alabama’s defense was rebuilding last year but still allowed just 10.9 PPG. This year’s unit figures to the best in the nation and may just turn in effort like the 2011 defense, which allowed only 8.2 PPG.

Where this line will move: Tennessee holds the distinction of being one of just two FBS schools to have never lost as many as eight games in a season (Ohio State is the other). The Vols were just 5-7 last year and, while I’m not as high on them as others are, I expect a winning season for them in 2013. That said, prior to this game, the Vols will have played at Oregon and Florida plus will have hosted Georgia and South Carolina in their first seven games.

As for the Tide, if they beat Texas A&M at College Station on September 14 (second game of the season), they’ll likely be 7-0 entering this game. Little doubt about who will win but over the last four seasons (while winning three national championships), Alabama is a modest 14-13 ATS at home, including 9-7 ATS vs. SEC opponents. My guess is that they’ll be Tennessee‘takers in this contest.

Four most costly NFL preseason bets since 1995

NFL preseason betting is like the canker sore inside your lip. The more it hurts, the more you want to just jab your tongue in there.

Betting on the NFL’s warm-up schedule is tempting after a long offseason. So if you are succumbing to that little devil on your shoulder, beware these four teams which have been especially costly over the past 17 NFL preseason slates.

Kansas City Chiefs (22-46 SU, 19-46-3 ATS)

Betting on the Chiefs, no matter the season, has been a poor practice in recent years. Kansas City went 1-3 SU and ATS in the preseason last summer and is now under the command of new head coach Andy Reid, who is notorious for his disdain for the exhibition games. However, Reid has gone against the grain in recent years, posting a 6-2 SU and ATS preseason mark in his final two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Oakland Raiders (32-35 SU, 28-37-2 ATS)

Dennis Allen enters his second season at the helm in Oakland, and like most Raiders coaches, his office chair resembles Hades’ La-Z-Boy. Oakland went just 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS last summer and Allen could be under pressure to win right off the bat. The Raiders are still ironing out their starting QB, so Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, Tyler Wilson and even rookie Matt McGloin are going all out.

Detroit Lions (34-34 SU, 28-37-3 ATS)

Jim Schwartz is another head coach under pressure to perform this preseason. He’s made Detroit one of the darlings of the warm-up sked, going 12-4 SU and 11-4 ATS since 2009. So the Lions could continue to improve on their preseason history. Detroit, which went 2-2 SU and ATS in the 2012 preseason, faces the Jets, Browns, Patriots and Bills this August. Those teams went a combined 3-13 ATS last preseason.

Carolina Panthers (30-38 SU, 28-37-3 ATS)

Ron Rivera’s job in Carolina was likely saved by the Panthers’ 5-1 SU and ATS finish to the 2012 season. Fans of preseason betting don’t want to see Rivera go after he posted a 6-2 ATS mark in his first two years on the job. The Panthers are hoping to pick up where they left off last winter but need to work in new offensive coordinator Mike Shula this summer. And there a numerous starting jobs still up for grabs.

Four NFL coaches who need to win this preseason

Handicapping NFL coaches has become a popular practice for preseason bettors, picking out guys like Mike Shanahan (44-34-2 ATS in the preseason) and Andy Reid (25-28-3 ATS), who are notorious for their interest – or lack thereof – during the summer schedule.

However, Shanahan finished the preseason 2-2 against the spread last summer – improving to 7-5 ATS during the preseason in his tenure with the Redskins – and Reid led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 3-1 ATS mark and is actually 6-2 ATS the past two preseasons.

While weighing a head coach’s preseason success is fine, perhaps a more valuable way to look at NFL coaches is just how bad they need to win in 2013 – preseason or not. Putting together a winning record in the warm-ups can cool a coach’s seat and appease a nervous fanbase, easing the pressure heading into Week 1.

Here are four coaches who need to win during the preseason:

          Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions

Schwartz just so happens to be one of the better preseason plays, posting a 12-4 SU and 11-4 ATS mark since 2009, so turning up the intensity during the exhibition slate shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Schwartz is under the microscope in the Motor City after Detroit suffered a serious regression in 2012, going 4-12 SU and 6-10 ATS, after posting 10 wins in 2011. A poor start – preseason or regular season – could spark the fire under Schwartz’s seat.

          Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones has done just about everything but ax his head coach, taking the offensive playbook from Garrett and handing it to new coordinator Bill Callahan. Dallas hasn’t been a great preseason bet in recent years, boasting a 5-3 SU and 3-5 ATS record during Garrett’s time as head coach. Cowboys fans shouldn’t expect wins this preseason. Dallas is working in two new coordinators, switching from the 3-4 to the 4-3 Cover 2 and has even introduced a Pistol look to the offense.

          Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta should be more concerned about winning games at the end of the year – after numerous postseason flops – but the Falcons’ fan base is pissed after last season and has had a bad taste in its mouth since blowing a 17-0 lead in the NFC Championship. Smith can provide a bit of mouthwash with a solid preseason. Atlanta has been horrid in tuneup tilts the past two years, with a 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS count, while Smith is 7-13 SU and 8-10-2 ATS during his preseason career.

          Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

Belichick is in no danger of being fired and spends about as much time worrying about the preseason scoreboard as he does picking out his sideline outfit every Sunday. However, after the summer the Patriots had – losing Welker and Woodhead, Gronkowski’s surgeries, Hernandez’s murder arrest – New England football fans need something to cheer for. Belichick was 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS last summer and boasts an 8-12 SU and 6-13-1 ATS record over the past five preseasons.

                      Thursday, August 1

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capping the calendar: August's best and worst MLB pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a 2-to-1 or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in August team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each August over the last three years. I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, enjoy…

                      GOOD AUGUST PITCHERS

Bruce Chen, Kansas City Royals • 13-5

Since being placed back in the starting rotation, Chen has been a valuable commodity for Kansas City and continued to throw extremely well, producing a 2.09 ERA. If the Royals are really going to make a run at the wildcard, Chen will have to match his previous August numbers.

Yovanni Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers • 12-4

Though just 27 years old, the radar gun does not lie and the Milwaukee right-hander has lost three to four MPH off his fastball accounting for career-worst ERA (4.91). It doesn’t help playing for one of the worst teams in baseball, but this is his own doing, with opposing right-hand hitters ripping a robust .286 against his tosses. Can he turn it around this month like in the past?

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies • 12-5

On July 21, Halladay threw off a mound for the first time since having corrective surgery on his throwing shoulder. Reports have his range of motion much improved, but at this juncture his return this month is questionable.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners • 12-5

It is just remarkable. Year after year, King Felix keeps putting up phenomenal numbers, despite pitching for a mediocre Seattle club. This season has been no different and Hernandez has not lost a game since May 25 and history tells us he will not drop many this month either.

Ian Kennedy, San Diego Padres • 13-5

After winning 36 games the last two years, it hasn’t been a good year for the former-Arizona right-hander with only three victories. This season he’s giving up over a hit an inning and he’s on pace to surrender a career-high in walks if he generates enough innings. The Diamondbacks traded him to San Diego on July 31 to upgrade their depleted bullpen.

Roy Oswalt, Colorado Rockies • 9-3

Suffered an injury on July 22 and has been doing rehab work since. He could come back this month, but at 0-4 with 7.64 ERA with the Rockies, there’s no reason to rush Oswalt back, who’s a shell of his Astros days.

                      C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees • 11-5

Sabathia turned 33 years old last month and has lost three to four MPH on his fastball. At 95-plus you can miss spots and still get out big league hitters. However, with decreased movement and throwing in the low 90s, C.C.’s ERA could be headed for the worst of his stellar career. Still thought of as a big-game pitcher, Sabathia has to rebound or the Yankees have no shot at the playoffs.

Ervin Santana, Kansas City Royals • 13-4

Though his record doesn’t show it, the change of scenery helped Santana and the 30-year-old Kansas City pitcher has been hovering around three with his ERA all year. Santana continues to pound the strike zone and he’s conceded only 31 walks in 21 starts. The Royals were playing good baseball at the end of July and if the Dominican dandy stays true to form, K.C. might be playing meaningful games all month long.

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers • 11-5

There have been Scherzer critics, pointing to his gaudy record of 15-1 being a byproduct of run support and very favorable pitching matchups. While there might be a speck of truth in this argument, ask opposing hitters what they think, batting .197 against him. And he’s second in punch-outs in the American League.

James Shields, Kansas City Royals • 13-4

The Royals righty is beginning to command his pitches better and is working later into games, as was his custom with Tampa Bay. If Shields can continue to throw well and match his road ERA (2.50), he and Santana form a nice 1-2 combo at the top of the Kansas City rotation.

                      BAD AUGUST PITCHERS

                      A. J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates • 4-11

At this time, Burnett only has 25 percent of the total wins he had in 2012, yet his ERA is a half a run lower, suggesting the lack of run support. If Burnett can keep throwing strikes with his cut fastball and sweeping curveball, the runs should come. Missing a few starts in June should help be fresher in the later stages of the season.

Kevin Corriea, Minnesota Twins • 4-9

The Minnesota right-hander has done his part to be a part of the worst starting pitching staff in baseball and has a 5.27 ERA in his last 10 outings. A combined 80 hits and walks over 54.2 innings will lead to a bloated ERA. No reason to believe soft-tossing Corriea will improve his stock with the Twins.

Tommy Hanson, Los Angeles Angels • 3-7

His record might say 4-2, but Hanson has been another bust for Los Angeles. To this point, he’s only made 11 starts after being counted on as the fourth or fifth man in the Angels rotation with an ERA over five. Hanson’s 11-4 rookie campaign of 2009 seems a long time ago.

Roberto Hernandez, Tampa Bay Rays • 4-10

Even positive skipper Joe Maddon is finding it challenging to say upbeat about this pitcher. The Rays have a plethora of outstanding starting pitchers and more are on the way. Simply speaking, by whatever name, Hernandez and his 4.71 ERA is not getting it done.

Tim Hernandez, San Francisco Giants • 5-11

Though Lincecum has generally thrown better this year compared to last, chances are this will be the third straight year he will finish with a record below .500. San Francisco will have to make a decision about the undersized state of Washington native, who will likely never again reach 220 or more strikeouts, which he did from 2008 to 2011. Strictly a 50/50 proposition these days.

Paul Maholm, Atlanta Braves • 5-10

After a quick start with the Braves, Maholm has settled into career pattern of being ordinary ball chucker. His only saving grace is being on Atlanta, which can hit home runs in bunches. Right-handed batters are hitting .301 against his deliveries in 2013.

Ross Ohlendorf, Washington Nationals • 2-9

Starting the season at Triple-A Syracuse, Ohlendorf was advanced to the Washington roster in June and has pitched mostly in relief except for a couple a good spot starts for the Nationals. The more he starts, the more the righty will be exposed.

Joe Saunders, Seattle Mariners • 5-11

At this juncture of his career, Saunders is a back of the rotation hurler who can eat up innings. This year, his splits are incredible and probably should be used accordingly. The lefty has a 3.62 ERA at Safeco Field, compared to a 5.53 ERA in away games. And the time of day Saunders pitches have day and night results, literally. His ERA is 3.80 after dark and an unsettling 6.58 during the day.
