                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting: Texas moves to 6-0 after Cruz suspension
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been a week since the suspensions stemming from the Florida biogenesis case in Major League Baseball were handed down.

Though it wasn't an overly star-studded list, the list included a few everyday players. Namely Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers.

Cruz was batting .269 with 27 homers and 76 RBI in a productive season before accepting the suspension from the league.

Following a 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros Sunday, the Rangers are a blistering 6-0 in life post-Nelson Cruz.

Any $100 bettor would be up $412.35 if they had wagered in each of the Rangers six ball games without their suspended slugger.

The Rangers will look to keep the streak rolling as they finish up their four-game set with the Astros Monday.

At the time of writing, the Rangers are -210 road favorites. Yu Darvish takes the mound for Texas.

Hitters for the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays have to be eager for the finale of their four-game series Monday.

The visiting Athletics are set to face a rusty starter in J.A. Happ, while Oakland starter Dan Straily has lost a career-high four straight outings.

Powered by Josh Reddick's five homers and eight RBIs in the first two games, Oakland (66-50) is hitting .328 with 24 runs in this series. The Athletics have taken two of three by limiting Toronto (54-63) to a .225 average and 15 runs.

Oakland, trailing Texas by one game in the AL West race, has to like its chances of capturing the set when it faces Happ (2-2, 5.84 ERA). The left-hander gave up seven runs over four-plus innings and did not receive a decision in a 9-7 loss at Seattle on Wednesday.

That was Happ's first outing since suffering a skull fracture May 7 against Tampa Bay. He failed to record an out past the fourth inning for the third straight outing.

"It's been a long road to get back but at the same time I felt ready to help us win," said Happ, who has never started against Oakland.

Chris Young is the Athletics hitter Happ has faced the most, going 0 for 5.

Josh Johnson had been scheduled to pitch Monday but Blue Jays manager John Gibbons pushed him to Wednesday due to a sore forearm.

Straily (6-6, 4.41) has posted a 4.95 ERA during his losing streak. He gave up three runs over four innings of a 3-1 defeat to Cincinnati on Tuesday, the third consecutive outing he has failed to last five.

The right-hander has gone 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA in two career starts against the Blue Jays. One came this season as he yielded five runs over 4 2-3 innings of a 5-0 loss July 30.

Jose Bautista homered off Straily in that contest and is 10 for 24 with three home runs in the season series.

The slugger has taken a back seat in this series to Reddick, who has gone 6 for 12 in the first three games thanks to his amazing display of power in the first two. He is 0 for 2 against Happ.

Alberto Callaspo hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning and Brandon Moss had a two-run homer as the A's won 6-4 on Sunday to give manager Bob Melvin his 700th victory.

"We find a way to win the game, but it wasn't pretty," Melvin said.

Oakland played without catcher Derek Norris, who is nursing a sore back. Stephen Vogt replaced him Sunday.

"Every win is a huge win, especially from here on out," Vogt said. "We're battling."

A's outfielder Coco Crisp left in the eighth with a sore left wrist Sunday and is not expected to play in this game.

Alex Rios has so far given the surging Texas Rangers what they were hoping for. He'll next try to help the AL West leaders keep rolling while ending Brett Oberholtzer's string of impressive starts.

The Houston Astros' rookie left-hander seeks his third straight scoreless outing in a bid to snap the Rangers' seven-game win streak in Monday's series finale.

Rios was brought over in a waiver deal from the Chicago White Sox on Friday and has gone 4 for 7 with two extra-base hits and two RBIs in his first two games with Texas (68-50). That's helped the Rangers win 12 of 13 and surge one game ahead of Oakland in the division.

Texas has welcomed Rios' instant impact after losing slugger Nelson Cruz to a 50-game drug suspension last Monday.

While trying to maintain their lead, the Rangers will seek to match their season-high, eight-game win streak from April 12-21, 2012. They haven't won eight in a row on the road in a single season since June 12-20, 2010, and have never swept a four-game series over the Astros (37-79).

"Ride the wave," second baseman Ian Kinsler told the team's website. "Just play hard every day and come to win. That's it. ... The confidence level everyone on the club, we all understand it's not one person, it's a collective group. It seems like we have a chance to score every inning. That's comforting."

Houston is seeking to avoid its first six-game home losing streak since dropping eight straight Aug. 12-31, 2012.

"We've been in position to win ballgames, but this is major league baseball," manager Bo Porter said. "Nobody is walking away feeling like it's a moral victory. I don't believe in moral victories, in the first place."

Oberholtzer (2-0, 2.53 ERA) will try to boost his club while extending a 16-inning scoreless streak and earning his third win in as many major league starts.

The left-hander is the first Astros player with at least 14 scoreless innings in his first two starts and the first major leaguer to toss seven or more scoreless frames in his first two since Philadelphia's Marty Bystrom in 1980.

Oberholtzer gave up four hits and two walks in his most recent outing, a 2-0 win over Boston last Monday.

"For me, my mindset is just to attack and throw strikes. I'm always confident," he said.

While he might have some confidence, Oberholtzer is facing a team that's won 14 of 16 over the Astros and 18 of 21 at Minute Maid Park, including a series-best eight in a row there.

Yu Darvish (11-5, 2.72) will try to deliver that victory by earning his third straight win and fourth in five starts. He's 3-1 with a 1.37 ERA in his last four outings but wasn't at his sharpest in an 8-3 victory at the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.

He gave up two home runs in one inning in the first time in his career and allowed three runs over seven innings.

"It was probably the worst outing I've had this year," he told the team's website. "But I was able to keep the game close and contribute to the win."

Darvish was 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA in his first three starts against Houston, including two at Minute Maid this season, but gave up five runs over six innings in losing 9-5 in the most recent matchup on July 6.

More than a month has passed since Hiroki Kuroda last pitched at home for the New York Yankees - and much has changed since.

The veteran owns the best home ERA in the AL heading into Monday night's opener of a four-game set against the Los Angeles Angels.

Kuroda (10-7, 2.45 ERA) hasn't pitched in Yankee Stadium since throwing five innings in a 2-0 victory over Minnesota on July 12. He is 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA in 10 starts in the Bronx.

New York (59-57) was within 1 1/2 games of the second AL wild card at that point, but that deficit is now seven. Alex Rodriguez has also returned, going 5 for 19 in five games and hitting his first home run since coming back in a 5-4 victory over Detroit on Sunday.

Kuroda enters with a home scoreless innings streak of 13 2-3 and has gone 2-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last four outings - all on the road. He yielded three runs over seven innings of a 3-2 defeat to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

The right-hander has been plagued by one of the worst run support averages in baseball at 3.38.

"He has pitched extremely well and he should have a lot more than 10 wins," manager Joe Girardi said.

Kuroda is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five career starts against Los Angeles (53-63), with Mike Trout going 2 for 4 against him.

Trout is a career .391 hitter in 11 games against New York, going 7 for 14 with four doubles and four stolen bases as the Angels lost two of three last season at Yankee Stadium. He was 5 for 10 with five walks as Los Angeles took two of three at home from the Yankees from June 14-16.

The Angels will try to recover from Sunday's 6-5 loss at Cleveland in which they blew a five-run lead in the sixth inning. They missed a chance to sweep a three-game set and have dropped 11 of 16.

``If we're going to have success, we have to hold leads,' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``It does point to a weakness on our ballclub.'

Los Angeles suffered its fourth loss after leading by five-plus runs in 2013, tying Colorado and Tampa Bay for most in the majors.

Garrett Richards (3-4, 4.20) will make his fourth straight start since replacing 13-game loser Joe Blanton in the rotation July 27. Richards has gone 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in the three outings, faring better than he did in a four-start stint in April in which he was 1-2 with a 5.52 ERA.

The right-hander returns to the site of his major league debut Aug. 10, 2011. He gave up six runs over five innings with Curtis Granderson homering twice against him in a 9-3 defeat.

Granderson is struggling during an injury-plagued season, going 3 for 20 during a seven-game home run drought. Robinson Cano has homered once in his last 31 home games after he hit 22 in 80 games in the Bronx in 2012.

The Yankees may not feel safe with a lead Monday since closer Mariano Rivera blew a third straight save for the first time in his illustrious career Sunday, allowing two solo homers in the ninth. Brett Gardner allowed New York to recover with a winning homer in the bottom half.

"Mo's bailed us out a few times," Gardner said. "It didn't matter if it was me or somebody else, we just needed to get a win today and I'm glad we made it happen."

The Atlanta Braves have been swinging the bats with authority during their hot stretch, though they could be missing two key members of the lineup Monday.

Considering the way the Philadelphia Phillies have struggled on the road and Julio Teheran has been pitching, Atlanta might not need them.

The Braves look for their 16th win in 17 games as they try to extend Philadelphia's longest road losing streak in 14 years.

After getting blanked for the first time since June 22 to end a 14-game winning streak, Atlanta (72-46) bounced back with a 9-4 victory over Miami on Sunday. Jason Heyward matched a career high with four hits and Freddie Freeman added a three-run homer.

"When you win 14 in a row, it's always a good thing and then the next thing you know you get shut out," said Freeman, hitting .417 over his last 12 games. "You don't want that to keep going."

The Braves have averaged 5.7 runs and batted .319 with runners in scoring position over their last 16 games, but they could be without Justin Upton and Brian McCann in the opener of this three-game series. Upton left Sunday's game with cramping in his left hamstring, while McCann was out of the lineup for the second straight day because of a sore right knee.

Upton has six home runs and 13 RBIs over his last 10 games. McCann has gone 12 for 21 (.571) in five games against the Phillies this season.

Even if they aren't able to play, Atlanta appears to be in a strong position to continue its run with Teheran (9-5, 2.96 ERA) on the mound.

The right-hander seeks his third straight win while handing Philadelphia (52-65) its 12th consecutive road loss. The Phillies haven't lost 12 straight away from home since Aug. 28-Sept. 14, 1999.

                              They've dropped 17 of 20 overall.

"Since I've been managing in the major leagues, this is definitely the toughest stretch we've ever had," said manager Charlie Manuel, who remains one win away from 1,000 for his career.

Teheran has 27 strikeouts over 24 innings while going 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last four starts - all Atlanta victories.

His only two games against the Phillies came in 2011, going 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA.

Jimmy Rollins has homered off Teheran and had one of his team's four hits Sunday, when Philadelphia failed to put a runner in scoring position in a 6-0 loss at Washington. The Phillies have averaged 1.9 runs while batting .194 during their road slide.

Michael Young, given Sunday off, is in a 5-for-41 slump on the road and has gone 5 for 31 against the Braves this season.

Cole Hamels (4-13, 3.81) also hasn't had things go his way lately. He has the most losses in the NL and hasn't won since July 9, but he's yielded just four runs over 22 innings in his last three outings. The Phillies lost all of those games while giving him four runs of support, and their 3.23 run-support average in his starts ranks among the worst in baseball.

Hamels hasn't earned a victory in his last five starts in Atlanta, going 0-2 with a 5.46 ERA. He lost there on opening day in his only matchup with the Braves this year, surrendering five runs over five innings in a 7-5 defeat.

Upton, Freeman and Dan Uggla took Hamels deep in that contest, though Uggla is batting .158 with 18 strikeouts in 57 career at_bats against him.

The Braves have taken six of nine meetings from the Phillies this season.

                                Game: 1
                                Venue: Wrigley Field
                                Date: August 12, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

The scuffling Cincinnati Reds lineup may be thrilled to have Ryan Ludwick scheduled to return from injury.

The team may be even happier that it's happening at Wrigley Field.

Ludwick is expected to make his first appearance since getting hurt on opening day as the Reds try to re-establish their road success against the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.

Cincinnati (65-52) is hitting .198 over its last 14 games, going 6-8 while averaging 3.0 runs. The Reds have won four of their last five despite batting .222, including five hits in 13 innings Sunday when Joey Votto's sacrifice fly scored Jack Hannahan to clinch a 3-2 victory over San Diego.

Ludwick's return may be just what Cincinnati needs to get the offense going.

The veteran outfielder finished second on the team with 26 homers and 80 RBIs last year despite playing just 125 games. He started 2013 by tearing the labrum in his right shoulder while sliding head-first into third base in a defeat to the Los Angeles Angels on April 1.

Ludwick, who underwent surgery, hit .136 with one homer and four RBIs during a 13-game minor-league rehab stint.

"I'm a guy who notoriously has hit doubles, home runs and driven in runs," Ludwick told the team's official website. "That's what I want to do. If I can't do that, it's going to be tough. I want to help the team win, and people are expecting me to come in and be in midseason form and hit 10-15 home runs the last two months.

"Realistically, I'm not thinking about that. I'm thinking about taking productive at_bats. That's what I'm dealing with now: strike zone judgment and recognizing pitches out of the hand. Hopefully the sooner that comes, the sooner I can get back to old form."

That may happen soon since Ludwick has a .370 average with 34 RBIs over his last 32 visits to Wrigley. He has five homers in his last nine games against the Cubs overall.

The Reds took three of four at the Friendly Confines from June 10-13 but dropped the series finale 6-5 in 14 innings, ending their 12-game winning streak there.

They've won 19 of 23 overall against their NL Central rival.

Mat Latos (11-3, 3.21 ERA) has never lost at Wrigley entering his start in the opener of this three-game set, having gone 2-0 with 20 strikeouts in 18 innings. He's 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA over his last five starts against the Cubs (52-65) overall.

The right-hander has pitched well against everyone since the All-Star break, going 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA in four games. He allowed four hits in 7 1-3 scoreless innings of Tuesday's 3-1 win over Oakland.

The Cubs are opening a 10-game homestand, and they've dropped eight of nine at Wrigley with the last two coming via shutouts. They haven't been blanked in three straight home games since Aug. 20-21, 1924.

Chicago turns to Travis Wood (7-8, 3.04), who is 0-3 with a 4.65 ERA in five starts against the Reds - all losses - since they dealt him to the Cubs prior to last season. He's compiled a 1.93 ERA in two meetings at Wrigley but was backed with three total runs.

That's been a recent theme for Wood, who has received seven runs of support over his last five games. He's 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA over that stretch.

Wood didn't get a decision in Wednesday's 5-2 win at Philadelphia, having allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings.
