        • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Lebron James went to jury duty in Akron Thursday. Seriously, he even brought a book to read during the delays. He got excused by the court, so the inevitable mob scene was avoided.

-- Steelers' WR Plaxico Burress tore his rotator cuff, could miss the season; at least he didn't shoot himself in the leg this time.

-- Texas Rangers put in a claim for OF Alex Rios, so White Sox have 48 hours to decide what to do; Rios doesn't hustle and makes $12M a year, they'll take a couple marginal prospects just to dump his salary.

-- Royals are 16-4 in last 20 games; Bruce Chen is 5-0, 1.79 as a starter. so I'm suggesting that someone needs to test him for PEDs. Soon.

-- Max Scherzer is 17-1, 2.84 this year; who saw that coming?

-- Tigers have won 12 in row, Braves 13 in row; going to be a circus in the Bronx tonight, with ARod playing first home game against red-hot Detroit.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.........

          13) I’m not a big fan of the ERA statistic, it rewards a pitcher if an error is made, even if it is his own error, but it doesn’t penalize him if a great defensive play saves his butt, which is an obvious inequity.

On the baseball page of this website, we quote RA, not ERA, any run a pitcher gives up counts against him. Just seems like a more accurate indicator of what happened.

          12) Wednesday in St Louis, Ricky Nolasco throws away a toss to first after a 30-foot roller in front of the plate, so the Cardinals have a guy on 3rd and two out—any runs that scored from that point on in the inning are unearned, and Nolasco gives up four straight hits and three runs.

Everything that happened was his fault, yet he got off the hook with three unearned runs; why?

          11) If you want to bet on a hole-in-one being made at the PGA this weekend, you could’ve gotten +$110; in the last three events at Oak Hill, there were seven aces.

          10) No Texas Longhorns on Big Monday this season? That seems odd, and an indication of how early defections to NBA hurt Rick Barnes’ program. Sometimes you can recruit too well; kids jumping to the NBA after one year of college can cripple a program, much like what happened to Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech.

          9) ACC games will replace Big East games on Big Monday this winter, which will be very odd, since Big East games (Raftery-Bilas-McDonough) were the anchor of Big Mondays for over 20 years.

ESPN should go back to a midnight Big Monday game too; no way either the Big West, Big Sky or WCC wouldn’t go for the added exposure.

Big East games will be on FOX Sports1, which debuts August 17.

          8) Colorado State gave hoop coach Larry Eustachy a contract extension up to $910,000 a year, with a $200K bonus if he makes the NCAA tourney.

          7) LSU-Wisconsin will play neutral site games in Houston in 2014 and at Lambeau Field in ’16; will be cool to see Les Miles munching on some grass from the frozen tundra.

          6) Three more Canadian kids will be trekking to Findlay Prep in Las Vegas to go to high school, including 6-7 wing Justin Jackson, one of the best players in the Class of ’16.

          5) Its hard to imagine that the college football playoff won’t wind up at eight teams; just too much money to leave on the table, with the four additional high-level (and high TV ratings games) an 8-game playoff would need.

          4) Cowboys are just 5-19 vs spread as a home favorite under Jason Garrett; they’re 5-12-1 vs spread in last 18 games they played where spread was 3 or less points.

          3) Redskins were favored in only two of their last 15 divisional home games; twice in five years, that’s remarkable.

          2) Packers are +65 in turnovers the last four years; last tme they were minus in turnovers was 2005, Mike Sherman’s last season as head coach.

          1) Braves’ 13-game win streak is longest in MLB since the A’s AL-record 20-game streak in 2002 that was depicted in the movie Moneyball.

              • Saturday's FOX Tip Sheet

                August 10, 2013

                Tampa Bay (66-48) at L.A. Dodgers (65-50)

-- Some sportsbooks had the Rays’ David Price listed as high as a minus-150 favorite against the Dodgers last night and deservingly so. Tampa Bay led 6-1 after Price exited in the seventh and that’s when Los Angeles rallied for six runs, four in the ninth, to capture a stunning 7-6 victory.

-- Tampa Bay has now dropped three straight and has gone 3-5 in its last eight games, all against National League opponents. On the season, the Rays are 12-6 in Interleague play.

-- The Rays have gone 9-12 with Roberto Hernandez (6-11, 4.76 ERA) on the hill this season but the team has won four of his last five starts.

-- Unfortunately, Tampa is just 2-7in his road starts and that includes four road starts.

-- Hernandez has seen the ‘under’ go 11-8 in his starts this season. On the road, the ‘under’ is connecting at a 75 percent (6-2) clip this season.

-- Against the National League, Hernandez boasts an impressive 3-0 record albeit against the Padres, Marlins and Diamondbacks. The ‘under’ cashed in all three games.

-- Prior to last night’s win at home, Los Angeles finished up an impressive eight-game road trip that watched the team go 7-1.

-- Dodgers are 8-6 against the American League, which includes a 3-1 mark at home.

-- The Dodgers have gone 14-4 overall and 8-1 at home when Zach Greinke (9-3, 3.40 ERA) starts this season.

-- The ‘under’ is 11-6 this season with Greinke on the hill, which includes a 5-3 mark at Dodger Stadium. The ‘under’ has gone 5-0-1 in his last seven starts.

-- Greinke has pitched in two Interleague games and has earned two no decisions but the Angels won both games, which includes a victory over the N.Y. Yankees on July 30. Most books have Greinke as a 2/3 favorite (Bet $150 to win $100) over the Rays this afternoon.

Baltimore (64-51) at San Francisco (51-64)

-- The Orioles won their third straight game last night as it stopped the Giants 5-2 in 10 innings. Baltimore is now 8-4 versus NL opponents this season. The Giants are 3-9 against the AL.

-- The Orioles have gone 2-2 in the second-half of the season with Wei-Yin Chen (6-4, 2.95 ERA) on the mound and are 7-6 in his 13 starts this season. Five of Chen’s six losses for Baltimore have come on the road.

-- Chen has been a clear-cut ‘under’ machine (11-2) this season and that includes a current streak of seven straight ‘under’ tickets. In afternoon games, the ‘under’ has gone 3-0 this season.

-- San Francisco has gone 15-22 against lefthanders and its offense has only hit 16 home runs against southpaws this seasons, which is the worst mark in the majors.

-- Since Chad Gaudin (5-2, 2.56 ERA) was put into the rotation for the Giants in June, the club has gone 6-4 in his 10 starts. His form has been much better lately with the team winning four of his last five starts.

-- The ‘under’ has gone 6-4 overall in Gaudin’s appearances, which includes a 4-1 (80%) mark at AT&T Park.

-- Chen or Gaudin have not started in an interleague matchup this season.

-- The total is only 7 today and Baltimore is listed as a road favorite.

Minnesota (51-62) at Chicago White Sox (43-71)

                -- Minnesota swept a double-header from Chicago on Friday, notching a 7-5 victory in Game 1 and a 3-2 extra-inning win in Game 2.

-- Including yesterday’s wins, the Twins are 8-2 versus the White Sox this season and 4-0 in games played at U.S. Cellular Field.

-- The ‘over’ has gone 6-3-1 in the 10 games.

-- The Twins have gone 2-7 in Mike Pelfrey’s (4-9, 5.23 ERA) nine road starts this season and the ‘under’ has gone 6-3 in those games. His offense hasn’t helped him much, averaging just 3.1 runs per game in the nine games.
The ‘under’ has gone 6-2 in his eight afternoon starts.

-- Pelfrey has faced the White Sox twice this season, both games at home. He went 0-1 and has been tagged for 18 hits and nine earned runs in 10 innings. The ‘over’ cashed in the two matchups.

-- Some pundits might say that yesterday’s outcome wasn’t surprising since Chicago has been inconsistent all season. The White Sox recently completed a three-game sweep of the Yankees at home this week, but that came after a 10 consecutive losses. Against New York, Chicago scored 17 runs in three games which was one less (18) than they produced during the recent slide.

-- Andre Rienzo (0-0, 1.38 ERA) will be making his third career start on Saturday and still looking for a result after a pair of no decisions in his first two outings which were on the road. In those games, he’s allowed nine hits and two earned runs in 13 innings while striking out nine.

-- Chicago has been installed as a short home favorite and the total is hovering around 8 ½-runs.

                • Preview: Tigers (68-46) at Yankees (58-56)
                  Game: 2
                  Venue: Yankee Stadium
                  Date: August 10, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

Now that the New York Yankees won a game with Alex Rodriguez in the lineup, they must find a way to string together more victories in a hurry.

After snapping the Detroit Tigers' 12-game winning streak, the Yankees look to win consecutive games for the first time in almost a month Saturday in the Bronx.

Mariano Rivera blew a second save in as many games when Miguel Cabrera hit a tying two-run, two-out homer in the ninth Friday, but Brett Gardner's single helped New York (58-56) end a four-game slide with a 4-3, 10-inning win.

``It was just one heck of a game, it really was,' Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. ``Terrific game.'

The Yankees, 7-14 since winning three in a row July 10-12, are 10 games back in the AL East and in the middle of the wild-card pack.

"Well, I hope it jump-starts it a lot,' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We need to win series. We need to win a lot of games moving forward.'

New York is 1-3 since Rodriguez made his season debut following a hip injury.

In the process of appealing his 211-game drug suspension, Rodriguez went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in his home debut and was greeted often with loud boos throughout the night. He's 3 for 15 with no RBIs and has fanned five times.

"Alex has had to deal with stuff before," Girardi said. "He's been booed before. He knows what he has to do and I expect him to do it.

"It's something he has to be able to put out of his mind and just be a player for us."

Detroit (68-46) lost for the second time in 18 games but might have a good chance to bounce back against scheduled New York starter Phil Hughes (4-10, 4.87 ERA), who is 0-3 with a 6.08 ERA in his last five starts.

The right-hander has allowed five runs in each of the last two starts, during which he's yielded 15 hits and five walks in 6 2-3 innings. He gave up six of those hits and walked three in 2 2-3 frames of a 6-3 loss at San Diego on Sunday.

"It's been like a nightmare I can't wake up from," Hughes told the Yankees' official website. "It's like a battle every time, even if I have a good start. It's not easy."

Since throwing a four-hitter in a 5-1 victory at Detroit on June 3, 2012, Hughes is 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA against the Tigers - including a loss in Game 3 of last year's ALCS. He allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings of an 8-4 loss at Comerica Park on April 6.

Detroit counters with Anibal Sanchez (9-7, 2.58), who allowed three hits and struck out seven in seven innings of the Tigers' 3-0 win in Game 2 to improve to 2-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts versus the Yankees.

The right-hander has allowed four runs in 26 2-3 innings while going 2-1 in his last four starts overall. He gave up two of those runs while striking out 11 in 7 2-3 innings and not factoring in the decision of Detroit's comeback 4-2 win at Cleveland on Monday.

Cabrera has two homers and nine of his major league-leading 108 RBIs in the last four contests.

Including the postseason, Cabrera has hit .340 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs in 28 games in the Bronx. He's 12 for 26 (.462) with four homers and three doubles against Hughes.

This weekend, the A's hope the rest of the set goes better than the last.

Coming off their highest-scoring game of the season, the visiting A's hope to end their recent struggles against Mark Buehrle on Saturday.

Oakland (65-49) pounded out 12 hits and scored eight runs off Esmil Rogers in a 9-4 home win over Toronto on July 29, then were held to two runs while dropping the next two games. The A's hit .216 with three homers and managed 15 runs while losing six of seven prior to Friday's 14-6 win over the Blue Jays (53-62).

Josh Reddick was hitless in his previous 20 at_bats before he homered three straight times and Oakland tagged Rogers for seven runs to snap a three-game skid with its 14-6 rout Friday. Reddick finished with five RBIs and Jed Lowrie had four hits with four RBIs, including a three-run home run, as the A's recorded five homers among their 17 hits.

"This could be a great thing for (Reddick) and us to kind of turn the corner and get hot at the right time,' winning pitcher Jarrod Parker said.

Lowrie is 9 for 18 with this season against the Blue Jays, who have lost two straight and five of eight.

The A's hope for a better performance against Buehrle (7-7, 4.41 ERA), who followed Toronto's loss at Oakland last week by allowing five hits in seven innings of a 5-0 victory on July 30.

The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his last four starts against the A's, but his 20-inning scoreless stretch ended Sunday when he gave up four of his five runs on two homers in six innings while not factoring in the decision of a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

"I felt too good, and as a result I kept missing location,' Buehrle said. "When I feel good I try to overthrow the ball more than I should instead of just worrying about location.'

Keeping the ball in the park remains the biggest challenge for Oakland starter A.J. Griffin (10-8, 3.91). The right-hander has served up 10 of his major-league leading 28 homers in his last four starts, which he has split while posting a 5.04 ERA.

He's the first Oakland pitcher to give up two or more home runs in four consecutive starts since Mark Redman in 2007. Three of the four runs Griffin allowed in 6 2-3 innings came on two homers in Sunday's 4-0 loss to Texas.

"It's just two pitches every game,' he said. "I feel like I pitched real well all game. That's the way it goes."

Griffin improved to 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in three starts versus Toronto despite yielding a two-run homer to Edwin Encarnacion, plus solo shots to Adam Lind and Brett Lawrie along with one other hit in seven innings of a 9-4 victory.

Toronto All-Star Jose Bautista is 0 for 2 with a walk versus Griffin, but homered Friday and is 7 for 16 with two home runs and three RBIs against the A's this season.

                    • Preview: Twins (51-62) at White Sox (43-71)
                      Game: 2
                      Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
                      Date: August 10, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

The Minnesota Twins are teeing off on the Chicago White Sox, and Oswaldo Arcia is leading the way.

Arcia has a chance to become the first Twin in 49 years to homer in four straight games against the White Sox as visiting Minnesota goes for a six-game winning streak over its AL Central rivals Saturday.

The Twins (51-62) are batting .303 with 14 homers and 32 runs while winning five straight games against Chicago (43-71).

Minnesota got off to a powerful start in this four-game set, connecting for four homers to win 7-5 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader Friday. It swept the twinbill with three more long balls, including Arcia's solo shot in the 10th inning of a 3-2 victory.

Arcia also hit a solo shot in the eighth inning of the opener.

"The ball flies here," manager Ron Gardenhire said of U.S. Cellular Field. "We put some good swings out there, got enough runs."

The rookie outfielder from Venezuela is doing that on a regular basis against the White Sox, going 5 for 14 in his last three games in the series.

If Arcia hits another out of the park Saturday, he'll become the first Twin to homer in four straight against Chicago since Bob Allison in 1964. He'd also become the first Minnesota rookie to do it against any opponent since Kent Hrbek versus Kansas City in 1982.

The Twins will try for a seventh win in nine games by giving the ball to Mike Pelfrey (4-9, 5.23), who certainly wouldn't mind seeing Minnesota continue to send some balls into the U.S. Cellular Field seats.

Pelfrey has been better over the past five weeks since returning from a stint on the disabled list with a back strain. He's posted a 3.31 ERA in his last six starts - his ERA was at 6.11 when he hit the DL - though he's 1-3 as Minnesota has given him five total runs of support in his last five.

The right-hander gave up nine runs and 18 hits - three homers - over 10 innings in a pair of home starts against the White Sox earlier this season.

Though Pelfrey's numbers haven't been bad lately, he's still not getting very deep into games. He labored through 104 pitches in five innings Sunday, allowing two runs in five innings before Arcia's seventh-inning homer provided the difference in a 3-2 win over Houston.

"I made two starts this homestand, and I threw nine innings total, which is terrible," Pelfrey told the Twins' official website. "They definitely needed more innings ... out of the starter, and I wasn't able to do it, which is unfortunate."

He'll be opposed by rookie Andre Rienzo (0-0, 1.38), who gets his third chance at becoming the first Brazilian to win a game in the majors.

The right-hander blanked the Tigers for six innings Sunday, but started the seventh by walking two batters who ended up scoring before exiting a game Detroit won 3-2 in 12.

"Need to work more for my next one so that kind of mistake don't happen again," Rienzo told the team's official website. "It's not about me, it about the team. I helped the team with six innings. Next time I hope to have more."

Adam Dunn is on a tear recently, hitting .378 over 11 games after getting two hits in Friday's nightcap. Still, the slugger has homered just once in 14 games.

Dunn, though, has a double and a homer in five at_bats versus Pelfrey this year.

                      • Preview: Rays (66-48) at Dodgers (65-50)
                        Game: 2
                        Venue: Dodger Stadium

While the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to find ways to win, the Tampa Bay Rays have struggled holding on to leads of late.

With Zack Greinke looking to continue his home success, the Dodgers can record a fourth consecutive victory by handing the Rays their fourth straight defeat Saturday.

Los Angeles (65-50) has won 35 of 43, but perhaps none more remarkable during that stretch than Friday's 7-6 comeback victory over Tampa Bay. The Dodgers erased a 6-0 deficit when Adrian Gonzalez scored from second on Fernando Rodney's throwing error to cap a four-run ninth.

"It's the best win so far,' said Skip Schumaker, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Mark Ellis had three hits, star rookie Yasiel Puig added two and each drove in a run as the Dodgers scored all their runs over the final three innings to win for the 13th time in 18 home contests.

"We're always talking about giving ourselves a chance to win,' outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. said.

Losers in five of seven, the AL wild card-leading Rays (66-48) imploded two nights after they gave up a one-run lead when Arizona scored twice in the eighth inning of Wednesday's 9-8 defeat.

Two games behind Boston in the East, Tampa Bay dropped a season-high four in a row April 13-16.

"They're an extremely hot team right now, and we just weren't able to hold them down long enough,' said Tampa Bay ace David Price, who allowed a run in seven innings. "But we're not going to harp on this loss.'

Puig made two ill-advised throws from center field and lost a ball in the lights, but he is 14 for 29 this month. He's hit .418 with 16 RBIs in 27 games at Chavez Ravine.

Greinke (9-3, 3.40 ERA), 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA in nine home starts, improved to 6-1 with a 2.74 ERA in his last nine overall after he allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 3-2 win at St. Louis on Monday.

"(Monday) on the mound, (Greinke) was just constantly pounding the zone, mixing all his pitches," catcher A.J. Ellis told the Dodgers' official website.

The right-hander, however, is 2-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 11 career starts versus a Tampa Bay team that's won two in a row against him.

Ex-Dodger James Loney had three hits Friday with two RBIs in the place he called home the previous six-plus seasons.

"I'm just taking it all in," he told the Dodgers' official website. "I'm happy to be playing back here."

Loney is batting a major league-best .366 with 34 RBIs on the road the this season. He's 2 for 8 with a homer against Greinke.

Rookie teammate Wil Myers has batted .438 during a 12-game road hitting streak.

Scheduled Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez (6-11, 4.75) allowed two runs while recording his first complete game in three seasons during a 5-2 victory over Arizona on July 30, but gave up three and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 4-3 win over San Francisco on Sunday.

"I didn't have my best stuff," he said. "I tried to keep the ball down, but it didn't move a lot."

Despite his last outing, Hernandez is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four interleague starts this season. He has never faced the Dodgers.

                        • Preview: Orioles (64-51) at Giants (51-64)
                          Game: 2
                          Venue: AT&T Park

Chris Davis and the Baltimore Orioles seem to enjoy interleague play.

The same can't be said of the San Francisco Giants.

Davis looks to continue tormenting NL pitchers as the Orioles go for their longest interleague winning streak in franchise history Saturday against the Giants.

Baltimore (64-51) is batting .289 with 18 homers while going 8-4 during interleague play this year, and Davis has made major contributions to that success.

The first baseman leads the majors with a .477 average in interleague games, adding five homers, 11 RBIs and 14 runs. Overall, his 41 homers are the most in baseball, while his 108 RBIs tie him for the lead with Detroit's Miguel Cabrera.

Davis came through in the clutch for the Orioles on Friday, connecting for a two-out, two-run double in the 10th inning of a 5-2 win at San Francisco (51-64). They have won five straight against the senior circuit, matching team-best runs from 1999, 2009 and 2012.

"Chris made a lot of big plays," manager Buck Showalter said. "He's capable out there. A lot of good things happened."

That's certainly been the case lately, as Davis has plated six runs while going 4 for 11 (.364) with two doubles and one homer as Baltimore has won the first three on its eight-game road trip.

Manny Machado, who had a pair of doubles and runs Friday, is 5 for 14 with four runs over that stretch. The third baseman owns a .385 average in 12 interleague games.

Wei-Yin Chen (6-4, 2.95) is scheduled to face the Giants for the first time and will attempt to rebound from his first loss since returning from the disabled list in July.

The left-hander went 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in four games after missing nearly two months with a strained right oblique. He looked capable of extending his winning streak Sunday, allowing one run in six innings before surrendering two in the seventh and getting charged with a 3-2 loss to Seattle.

Chen has found success against the NL, winning three of his last four starts behind a 2.59 ERA. He was superb in his most recent outing April 20, limiting the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run and three hits in six innings of a 6-1 victory.

Unlike Davis and the Orioles, the Giants are struggling in interleague play at 3-9 while batting .226.

Chad Gaudin (5-2, 2.56) is expected to take the mound for his first start against the Orioles since Aug. 21, 2003, when he was a rookie with Tampa Bay. The journeyman right-hander has faced them 10 times since as a reliever, most recently with the New York Yankees in 2010.

He enters this meeting as one of the Giants' most effective starters since being moved into the rotation June 1, going 5-1 with a 2.83 ERA in 10 starts while holding opponents to a .215 batting average.

"He's just been so consistent, both in the 'pen and starting," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website. "He's so valuable on this ballclub. We needed a starter and he's stepped in and he's thrown the ball as well as anybody."

That's certainly been the case while the Giants have won Gaudin's last two starts, as he's allowed two runs and struck out 13 in 13 1-3 innings.

Davis is 1 for 5 versus Gaudin, but all those matchups came in 2009.

San Francisco is scuffling at the plate with a .195 average and eight runs scored while dropping three of four. Buster Posey has been emblematic of those woes, going 1 for 8 his last three games and hitting .182 over his last 17.

                          • Preview: Angels (52-62) at Indians (62-54)
                            Game: 2
                            Venue: Progressive Field
                            Date: August 10, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels might want to stick with their pregame routine.

The hot-starting Angels will look to send the reeling Cleveland Indians to a sixth straight loss Saturday night at Progressive Field.

The Angels (52-62) came into Cleveland having scored in the first inning of five straight games, though they'd lost their previous four. That skid ended Friday, when they rode a five-run first to a 5-2 victory over the Indians.

Los Angeles has prospered early despite a very fluid top of the order. On Tuesday, Kole Calhoun took over the leadoff spot and he and Mike Trout hit back-to-back home runs to begin the night. On Wednesday, Calhoun led off with a walk and Trout homered once again. On Friday, J.B. Shuck led off and the Angels' first four hitters all reached before Josh Hamilton's three-run home run.

Trout, who walked twice Friday, has reached base in 39 straight games - the second-longest streak in franchise history. He has an on-base percentage of .492 during that span.

Los Angeles' problem is that it can't seem to tack on later in the game. Beginning August 3, the Angels have scored 23 runs in the first five innings but just two runs from the sixth on.

The Indians, losers of five straight, have been decimated by the big inning. Prior to Friday's first, they gave up at least four runs in three different frames en route to being swept in four games by Detroit.

The Indians (62-54) could use a lengthy outing from Ubaldo Jimenez (8-6, 4.18) after their bullpen had to go six-plus innings in three straight contests, but pitching deep into games hasn't been his strong suit.

The right-hander, who had his start pushed back so he wouldn't face the Tigers, has failed to make it through six in nine of his last 11 starts. That included a very inefficient start at Miami on Aug. 2, when he needed 107 pitches to make it through four innings. The Marlins tagged him for five runs - two earned - and nine hits in a 10-0 victory.

Three of those runs came in the first inning after Asdrubal Cabrera misplayed a double-play grounder that would have given Jimenez a scoreless frame.

"You hate to ever give anybody extra opportunities, and we did that," manager Terry Francona told the team's official website. "Saying that, throwing 100 pitches in four innings is too much."

Jimenez only got a chance to throw 72 in his latest start against the Angels. He gave up eight runs and eight hits - including a pair of homers - in a 9-6 loss at Anaheim on Aug. 14 that dropped him to 0-3 with a 7.23 ERA versus Los Angeles.

C.J. Wilson (11-6, 3.49), on the other hand, is 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in four outings against Cleveland since 2010.

The left-hander won seven of eight starts from June 14 through July 25 while posting a 1.96 ERA, but his last two have been less impressive. After giving up a season-worst 11 hits and six runs over four innings July 30, he allowed four runs in 7 1-3 of Los Angeles' 6-5 loss to Toronto on Sunday.

After hitting just one home run in their previous seven games, the Indians hit two on Friday night, including Michael Brantley's first in a month.

Wilson, however, has yielded only two long balls over his last 11 outings - tying him for the fewest in the majors among pitchers to make at least eight starts since June 8.

The Washington Nationals ended their losing streak and now appear to be facing Philadelphia Phillies ace Cliff Lee at an opportune time.

The Nationals look to hand Lee his fourth straight loss and send the visiting Phillies to their 16th defeat in 19 games Saturday night.

Behind home runs from Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman, Washington (55-60) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-2 win over Philadelphia in Friday's series opener.

Following a 2-6 stretch in which they averaged 2.5 runs and went 7 for 56 (.125) with runners in scoring position, the Nationals went 6 for 10 in those situations Friday.

"That's more like it. I can sleep now,' said manager Davey Johnson after his club's rare offensive outburst.

Zimmerman (3 for 26), Ian Desmond (3 for 27) and Denard Span (0 for 17) had been mired in slumps before combining for four hits and three RBIs in the opener.

While they rank last in the majors with a .220 batting average against left-handers, the Nationals scored eight runs on nine hits in five innings against southpaw John Lannan.

They'll try to keep it going against Lee (10-5, 3.13 ERA), who has a 5.92 ERA over his last four starts.

The left-hander has 24 strikeouts over 24 1-3 innings during that stretch, but has allowed eight home runs after giving up that many over his previous 17 outings.

Lee will attempt to avoid losing four straight starts for the first time since July 6-26, 2007, and provide a lift for a Philadelphia (52-63) rotation that has a 6.79 ERA over the last 12 games.

After missing a start due to a stiff neck, Lee went five innings to match his shortest outing of the season and yielded four runs and eight hits in a 4-1 loss to Atlanta on Sunday.

He's split a pair of home starts versus the Nationals this season, allowing six runs and 14 hits while striking out 15 over 15 innings. The All-Star has surrendered six of his 16 home runs this season in those two outings.

Jayson Werth has done the most damage, going 3 for 6 with two homers in this matchup. He's also 18 for 37 (.486) over his last 13 games overall.

The Nationals counter with right-hander Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.76), who has received four runs of support or less in six of his seven starts.

Following his first career victory in a 14-1 win over the Mets on July 28, Jordan went 5 1-3 innings and gave up four runs before leaving without a decision in an 8-5 loss at Milwaukee on Sunday.

He'll make his second start against the Phillies after he allowed four runs over 5 2-3 in a 4-2 road loss July 9.

Michael Young doubled off Jordan in that meeting and is 11 for 26 (.423) with six RBIs in his last seven games against Washington.

Teammate Chase Utley stayed hot with two hits Friday, leaving him 8 for 13 with three doubles and five RBIs in his last four contests.

The next win for Phillies manager Charlie Manuel will be the 1,000th of his career.

                                Game: 3

The recent abundance of Kansas City Royals victories have come mainly against foes far out of contention. They're proving, though, that they can play with the big boys, too.

Kansas City has taken the first two of its four-game set with the visiting Boston Red Sox, and it looks to win for the 16th time in 18 games Saturday night.

The Royals (60-53) haven't hit the 60-win mark this early since they were 60-50 on Aug. 4, 2003, the last season they finished above .500.

Kansas City's current surge began with three victories over Baltimore, but its last 10 wins entering this series had come against the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota and New York Mets.

Billy Butler and Justin Maxwell homered in a 5-1 victory in Thursday's series opener before Maxwell homered again Friday as the Royals rallied for a 9-6 win over the AL East-leading Red Sox.

They scored six times in the sixth to overcome a three-run deficit, including a two-run single from Eric Hosmer. Maxwell, acquired from Houston on July 31, added an RBI single in the inning to complete the scoring.

``It's just team chemistry, no matter who's at the plate or who's on the mound, we all have each other's backs,' Maxwell said. ``That's the main thing.'

Runs may be tougher to come by Saturday, though, as Felix Doubront takes the hill for Boston (70-48).

Doubront (8-5, 3.56 ERA) has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 15 straight starts, marking the longest streak for a Red Sox left-hander since at least 1920. He's 4-2 with a 2.02 ERA over his last nine outings after giving up five hits in seven innings of Sunday's 4-0 win over Arizona.

``Being consistent in my five-day routines and just taking my plan for my next outing, that's the most important one to me,' Doubront said. ``We're working on that every fifth day.'

Doubront's string of games giving up three runs or fewer is the longest by any Boston pitcher since Tim Wakefield's run of 17 in 1995. He has tried different tactics after going 11-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 29 starts last season.

``A lot of playing catch, a lot of front toss and a lot of that, that makes me be more consistent with pitches,' he said.

Doubront, though, had two rough outings versus Kansas City in 2012, giving up five runs - three earned - in 6 1-3 innings of an 11-5 win May 7 before allowing four runs in five frames of Boston's 8-6 victory Aug. 26.

The Red Sox will look to bounce back after David Ortiz homered and Mike Napoli hit a three-run double in Friday's defeat.

Jeremy Guthrie takes the mound for the Royals looking to win a career-best fifth straight start.

Guthrie (12-7, 3.96) hast posted a 1.29 ERA over his last three after pitching a four-hitter for his second shutout of the season in Monday's 13-0 win over Minnesota.

In the six starts prior to his last three, the right-hander went 1-4 with a 5.80 ERA.

``Unfortunately, I've had big leads and have not pitched as well,' Guthrie said. "Even with a 6-0 lead, I felt (like) I was pitching with a two- or three-run lead."

Guthrie, who is 1-0 with an 8.59 ERA in his last three starts versus the Red Sox, gave up four runs and walked four in six innings of Kansas City's 5-4, 10-inning win over Boston on April 21.

The Royals have won the last four meetings with the Red Sox after dropping the first matchup this season.
