Preview: White Sox (40-68) at Tigers (63-45)
                  Game: 3
                  Venue: Comerica Park
                  Date: August 04, 2013 1:08 PM EDT

The long ball continues to produce wins for the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers will seek their eighth straight win on Sunday when they host the struggling Chicago White Sox in their series finale.

The Tigers (63-45), who led the major leagues with 37 home runs in July, rode three solo home runs Saturday to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox, who have dropped nine in a row.

They continue to hit home runs despite the absence of Miguel Cabrera, who leads the team with 32.

"I've always said that we have so much talent in this clubhouse,' pitcher Max Scherzer said after notching his major league-high 16th win. "Miggy's a big part of it, but even without Miggy, there's plenty of guys in here that are very capable of dominating in the major leagues."

Detroit has homered in six straight games and received an unexpected boost Saturday from newly acquired Jose Iglesias. After going 166 at_bats without a home run, the third baseman hit his first homer since June 2.

He was joined by a few less surprising candidates in Torii Hunter, who has five home runs in his last nine games, and Jhonny Peralta, who has four since July 14.

Hunter is batting .369 since July 2, while Peralta - who may be facing a suspension for PED usage as part of MLB's investigation into Biogenesis, has bounced back after hitting only one homer in 38 games prior to his recent surge.

Pitching, however, remains at the heart of the Tigers' winning streak. Detroit has posted a 1.00 ERA over its last seven games and the bullpen has a 0.63 ERA in that span - conceding one run and seven hits in 14 1-3 innings.

Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.49 ERA) has been as hot as anyone in the Tigers' rotation, posting a 2.08 ERA during a four-start winning streak.

The right-hander won at home last Sunday, scattering three runs over six innings of Detroit's 12-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He is trying to beat the White Sox (40-68) for the third time in less than four weeks and has gone 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last nine starts against them.

Porcello has benefited from tremendous support during his winning streak, with the Tigers spotting him 32 runs.

Andre Rienzo (0-0, 0.00) could use such support. The right-hander did not get a decision in his major league debut Tuesday after giving up three runs - all unearned - in seven innings of Chicago's 7-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

While Rienzo surrendered two hits and three walks around Alexei Ramirez's error in the Indians' three-run fifth inning, he allowed just three baserunners his other six frames.

"It was fun seeing him pitch," manager Robin Ventura said. "The kid was good. For all the excitement he had of having his first start, he was great."

Rienzo is trying to become the first Brazilian-born pitcher to record a victory in the major leagues.

Rienzo, who got to pitch to fellow countryman Yan Gomes his last time out, has embraced the opportunity.

"I'm glad to be the second one," Rienzo said. "I hope more come.'

The White Sox, who have been held to 16 runs during their skid, are trying to avoid their first 10-game losing streak since June 11-20, 1976.

Paul Konerko - 0 for his last 10 with four strikeouts - is a lifetime .355 hitter (11 for 31) versus Porcello.

Preview: Indians (61-49) at Marlins (43-66)
                    Game: 3
                    Venue: Marlins Park
                    Date: August 04, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians proved on Saturday they could quickly recover from the end of their lengthy winning streak.

They'll be looking for a similar bounce-back effort from Scott Kazmir.

After a brilliant seven-start stretch, Kazmir tries to put a rocky outing behind him and deliver a series victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.

The Indians (61-49) entered Miami averaging 6.3 runs during an eight-game winning streak, including three straight games with double-digit hits.

Both of those streaks ended as Cleveland mustered only three hits in Friday's 4-0 loss, but the Indians' offense got back in gear Saturday. Jason Kipnis broke out of an 0-for-10 slump with three singles, including the go-ahead two-run hit in the seventh, and Cleveland stole six bases in its 4-3 win - its most since 2000.

The Indians had five steals in their previous 15 games, but Saturday's total gave them 84 for the season - tied for the second-most in the majors with Boston and Kansas City.

"The Indians are trying to be aggressive, and that's their game because they can really run," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

Michael Bourn had three of those steals after going 16 games without one. He had two hits and three runs after coming into Saturday in an 8-for-41 (.195) slump.

"Michael's our spark plug," Kipnis said. "He gets us going and gets us moving in the right direction."

Kazmir (6-4, 4.11 ERA) has generally given the Indians outstanding starts over the past six weeks, going 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA in a seven-start stretch from June 21-July 24. But he wasn't nearly as sharp Tuesday, surrendering a season-high nine hits and four runs over five innings in Cleveland's 7-4 victory over Chicago.

"I don't think he felt real good about his stuff tonight," manager Terry Francona told the Indians' official website. "It was just one of those nights where he came out and he was having a little bit of trouble getting loose. But he kind of, to his credit, he hung in there."

Kazmir is 5-0 at home and 1-4 on the road, but he's pitched better outside of Progressive Field. He has a 4.25 ERA in Cleveland and a 3.99 ERA in 10 road starts.

Regardless of where he's pitched, Kazmir has received plenty of offensive help. The left-hander is getting 7.37 runs of support per nine innings, second in the majors among pitchers who have thrown at least 100 innings behind Detroit's Max Scherzer.

Kazmir hasn't faced the Marlins (43-66) since 2009, when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Miami, which on Saturday failed for the sixth time to win a season-high fourth straight, has posted a 2.87 ERA since June 16 - the third-best mark in baseball. The starters have led the way lately, allowing three runs or fewer in 13 of their last 14.

Nathan Eovaldi (2-1, 3.47) will look to maintain the Marlins' success on the mound. He posted a quality start for the seventh time in eight 2013 outings Tuesday, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings of a 4-2 loss to the Mets.

Eovaldi's only real issue has been his control. He has walked 4.24 batters per nine innings, including a season-high five free passes against New York.

"It was rough tonight," Eovaldi said. "I have to work ahead. My fastball command wasn't there. I was off the plate, just a rough one."

The Indians had lost seven of nine on the road prior to Saturday's game, including five one-run defeats.

The New York Mets nearly staged a come-from-behind victory over the Kansas City Royals in their first game without David Wright.

The second contest without their superstar could prove much more challenging as they try to produce runs against Ervin Santana, who has been dominant since the All-Star break.

New York will try to bounce back against Santana and Kansas City on Sunday as the club seeks just its second series victory at Citi Field since June.

The Mets (49-59) placed Wright on the disabled list prior to Saturday's game after the All-Star suffered a strained right hamstring running out an infield hit in a 4-2 win on Friday. New York gave no timetable for the return of Wright, who was hitting .309 with 16 homers and 54 RBIs while playing all but two of the team's first 107 games.

"It's disappointing," he said. "I kind of came to the realization that I wasn't going to be able to play today and probably not the next day. I will hopefully get this thing healthy as quickly as I can and get back on the field."

New York lost 4-3 in 12 innings Saturday, rallying from a 3-1 deficit on Josh Satin's two-run single in the eighth before Justin Maxwell led off the 12th with his fifth career pinch-hit home run to lift Kansas City (55-52) to its 10th victory in 11 games.

Maxwell is 3 for 5 in three games since being acquired from Houston on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Justin Turner was 1 for 4 filling in for Wright at third base, and Satin - occupying Wright's typical third spot in the order - went 2 for 5. Manager Terry Collins didn't necessarily specify a permanent plan without Wright moving forward, though.

"We may have to make some lineup adjustments if it's going to be a long-term thing," Collins said. ``If it's going to be two weeks, maybe we can just buy some time with some other guys.'

New York could certainly have used Wright's pop against Santana (7-6, 3.03 ERA). The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA in three starts since the Midsummer Classic.

He limited the Twins to two runs and four hits over seven innings of a 7-2 road win on Tuesday, retiring the final 10 batters he faced, including five via strikeout.

"Any time he goes out on the mound, you know he's going to deal," third baseman Mike Moustakas said. "You know he's going to hold them under two runs and we just gotta go score a couple for him."

The Royals' offense could be in for a challenge as well against Mets rookie Zach Wheeler (4-1, 3.55), who is 3-0 with a 2.73 ERA over his last five outings.

Wheeler carried a no-hitter into the seventh of a 4-2 win at Miami on Tuesday and allowed two runs and three hits overall. He didn't allow a homer after giving up seven in his previous six starts.

"That might have been as dominant of a performance through six innings that I've seen all year from anybody," Collins said.

Miguel Tejada is 11 for 26 during a seven-game hitting streak after going 3 for 4 on Saturday.

Marlon Byrd and John Buck - the only Mets with more than one at-bat against Santana - are a combined 6 for 39 (.154) with 12 strikeouts against him.

Different forms of clutch hitting have determined the winner in each game between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals.

With Mike Leake and Lance Lynn pitching, that will likely be the case again Sunday when the NL Central rivals conclude their series.

St. Louis (64-45) was the first to find its hitting stroke as the two squads chase Pittsburgh in the Central, going 5 for 8 with runners in scoring position Friday in a 13-3 romp. Despite going 1 for 11 in such situations Saturday, the Reds scored their first five runs with two out en route to an 8-3 win, breaking out of an offensive funk in which they scored 12 runs their previous seven games.

Jack Hannahan's two-run single in the first erased an early deficit before Devin Mesoraco added the first of his two home runs - a two-run shot in the fourth - to back Tony Cingrani's solid effort.

"The hit of the game was the two-out hit by Jack Hannahan,' manager Dusty Baker said. "It was nice to see some of the guys swinging that way tonight. It looked pretty good tonight.'

Lance Lynn (12-5, 3.87 ERA) will try to keep the Reds in check as he attempts to become the Cardinals' second 13-game winner alongside Adam Wainwright. The right-hander pitched well enough to end his three-game road losing streak on Tuesday at Pittsburgh, limiting the Pirates to one run and three hits in six innings of a 2-1, 11-inning defeat in the first game of a doubleheader.

"He was right on," manager Mike Matheny told the team's official website. "If we can keep him doing that the rest of the season, he's going to win a lot of games."

Both of Lynn's lifetime wins over Cincinnati have come this year, and he has a 2.84 ERA in three outings against the Reds in 2013. He surrendered four runs and five hits in six innings before St. Louis posted an 11-4, 10-inning road victory on June 9.

Jay Bruce, who is 0 for 7 with three strikeouts in this series, is 4 for 9 with a double and a triple lifetime versus Lynn.

Mike Leake (10-4, 2.59) will try again for his fourth consecutive winning decision while giving Cincinnati (61-50) its first series victory over St. Louis in four tries this year. The right-hander was in line for his 11th victory Monday after scattering four hits and two walks in seven shutout innings at San Diego, but closer Aroldis Chapman served up a two-run walkoff homer.

It was the best outing during a four-start stretch in which Leake is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He was on the losing end of a 9-2 decision versus St. Louis on June 7, yielding three runs and six hits over five innings.

Leake, whose five starts and six lifetime appearances versus the Cardinals have all come at home, is 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA against them.

Matt Holliday is 7 for 17 with two doubles versus Leake, while David Freese is 5 for 10 with a homer. Carlos Beltran, though, is 2 for 18 with a solo homer.

Matheny likely will re-insert All-Star second baseman Matt Carpenter into the starting lineup after bringing him off the bench Saturday. Carpenter is mired in a 1-for-31 slump that has plummeted his average 22 points to .303.

                          Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                          Date: August 04, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

One Saunders has helped the Seattle Mariners' offense bust out in the first two games of their series with the Baltimore Orioles, and another will try to help finish it on a positive note by holding the opposition's lineup in check.

Former Oriole Joe Saunders takes the mound for Seattle as the teams conclude a three-game set Sunday at Camden Yards.

Outfielder Michael Saunders hit a two-run homer and drove in another run in Friday's series opener, but the Mariners (51-59) fell 11-8 for their fourth straight loss.

His performance Saturday helped Seattle end its skid, though, as Saunders hit a three-run homer in the fifth before adding a two-run shot in the ninth in an 8-4 win.

Justin Smoak went 3 for 3 while Kendrys Morales added two hits. He's 15 for 22 (.682) during a streak of five consecutive multihit games.

``We've been swinging the bat really well lately,' Saunders said. ``We lost a couple heartbreakers, played well in Boston (in the previous series) although we got swept. We were able to put up some runs (Saturday).'

Joe Saunders, no relation to Michael, now will look to shut down Baltimore for a second time.

Saunders (9-10, 4.65) went 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts for the Orioles last season after coming over in a trade with Arizona on Aug. 26. He pitched a gem against his former team April 29, throwing a four-hitter in a 6-2 victory.

The left-hander hasn't been nearly as good lately following a four-start winning streak, though, allowing five runs in 4 2-3 innings of a 10-1 loss to Cleveland on July 24 before allowing five runs in five frames of an 8-2 defeat at Boston on Tuesday.

"He's not a guy that can pitch up in the zone, so he's got to stay down there," acting manager Robby Thompson said.

Saunders went 2-2 with a 5.18 ERA in four starts at Camden Yards last season, but Orioles slugger Chris Davis, who leads the majors with 40 homers and 102 RBIs, is just 3 for 15 with a homer and six strikeouts off Saunders.

Davis had a sacrifice fly while Matt Wieters and Manny Machado, who also hit his major league-best 40th double, hit solo homers for Baltimore (61-50), which has lost seven of 11.

``We were fortunate. They could have scored a lot more runs,' manager Buck Showalter said.

The Orioles look to get back on track with help from Wei-Yin Chen, who has been solid after being sidelined nearly two months due to a strained right oblique.

Chen (6-3, 2.87) has gone 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in four starts since returning July 10. He struck out a season-high nine while giving up three runs in 7 1-3 innings of Tuesday's 4-3 win over Houston.

"I'm a little tired right now,' Chen said after throwing a career-high 119 pitches. ``This was the first time I threw that many in the U.S., but I definitely felt really strong and really good.'

The left-hander's last defeat came May 1, when he allowed a season-worst five runs in four innings of an 8-3 loss at Seattle in his shortest outing of the season.

Michael Morse, who is 4 for 9 with a homer in this series after going 0 for 15 in his previous five games, hit a two-run homer off Chen in that contest.

                            Game: 3
                            Venue: Fenway Park

Returning from injury used to be an exciting moment for Brandon McCarthy, but that feeling gradually wore off after having to do it so many times over his career.

McCarthy takes a major league mound for the first time in more than two months as the Arizona Diamondbacks conclude a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park.

Shoulder problems are nothing new for McCarthy (2-4, 5.00 ERA), who went on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation after giving up six runs in 2 2-3 innings of a 9-5 loss to Texas on May 30. After so many issues in recent years, he's simply relieved to be getting back on the mound.

"Now I feel like when I come back again, it's just a normal start," McCarthy told the team's official website.

The right-hander allowed three runs while throwing 85 pitches in six innings of his second rehab start July 26. Arizona's starters had a 3.63 ERA at the time of his injury, but they've posted a 4.29 mark during his DL stint.

"I felt comfortable and I was able to get back into mental game shape. Nothing bothered me," McCarthy said after his rehab outing. "I was able to get into the sixth and felt strong. I felt like I had more in the tank, too, so that was encouraging. In terms of pitching, I feel like I'm where I need to be."

McCarthy won both of his starts against the Red Sox in 2012 while with Oakland, giving up one run in 6 2-3 innings of a 1-0 win May 2 and two runs in 6 1-3 frames of a 20-2 victory Aug. 31.

He'll be opposed by Felix Doubront, who has been a pleasant surprise this season while putting his name into the club's record books.

Doubront (7-5, 3.77) has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, the longest streak for a Boston left-hander since at least 1920 and the best by any Red Sox pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2002.

He took the loss against Tampa Bay in each of his last two starts, though, as David Price tossed gems for the Rays. Doubront gave up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-1 defeat July 24 before allowing two runs over five in Monday's 2-1 loss.

Though the Red Sox (67-45) weren't able to provide Doubront with much run support in those outings, they've averaged 6.4 runs while winning four of their last five.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer and Shane Victorino added a solo shot in Saturday's 5-2 win over Arizona. Left fielder Jonny Gomes threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the eighth.

"Jonny Gomes might be my favorite player in the big leagues,' said a joking Jake Peavy, who won his first start since coming over from the White Sox at the trade deadline.

The Diamondbacks (56-54) have dropped five of seven and have scored three runs or fewer in each defeat. Paul Goldschmidt, who hit his 26th homer of the season Saturday, is 7 for 39 (.179) with 16 strikeouts over his last 10 games, with five of those hits leaving the ballpark.

Boston has won six of the last seven meetings with Arizona.

Preview: Rockies (52-60) at Pirates (66-44)
                              Game: 3
                              Venue: PNC Park
                              Date: August 04, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

In his first season in Pittsburgh, A.J. Burnett gave the Pirates something they'd rarely had over the past two decades - a legitimate front-of-the-rotation starter.

Though it's hardly evident in his record, he's been even better in 2013.

Burnett looks for just his second win in the past three months Sunday as the Pirates try to maintain their grip on baseball's best record in this finale against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

The right-hander gave Pittsburgh its first 16-game winner since 1991 last season while posting the ninth-best ERA (3.51), fifth-best opponent batting average (.246) and fourth-best strikeout rate (8.01 per nine innings) during the Pirates' 20-year stretch of losing seasons.

Burnett (4-7, 2.86 ERA) has better numbers across the board this season, again ranking among the NL's top 10 in ERA and opponent batting average (.221) while posting the league's second-best strikeout rate (9.93). He just hasn't gotten much help.

Tuesday was the seventh time in Burnett's past 12 starts where the Pirates (66-44) scored exactly one run for him, though manager Clint Hurdle wasn't complaining about his pitcher's contributions in a 2-1, 11-inning win over St. Louis. Burnett seemed to be getting close to an ejection after arguing a call in the sixth, but escaped a jam and made it through seven, allowing three hits and a run while striking out nine.

"A.J. can get fired up. He's not one to hide his emotions by any means," Hurdle told the team's official website. "That's one of the things you love about him. He's out there and lets people know how he feels, including his teammates."

Pittsburgh has given Burnett just seven runs over his last six home starts, a total it nearly provided Francisco Liriano in seven innings Saturday. Jose Tabata homered, tripled and doubled in a 5-2 victory over the Rockies that was Liriano's seventh win in eight outings and extended the Pirates' NL Central lead over St. Louis back to 1 1/2 games.

Tabata had hit .116 in 43 at_bats over his previous 18 games with no extra-base hits.

For whatever reason, visits from Colorado bring out the best in him. Tabata has hit safely in all 11 career home games against the Rockies, homering three times in 45 at_bats and posting a .711 slugging percentage.

Tabata has five homers at PNC in 561 at_bats against all other opponents.

"We've seen Jose swing the bat like this before and be productive over the last few years,' Hurdle said. "Hopefully, he will get hot.'

Burnett has faced Colorado (52-60) just once since 2004, though he's had the number of one Rockie from their time together in the AL. Michael Cuddyer is 3 for 24 with eight strikeouts against Burnett.

If Juan Nicasio (6-5, 4.92) pitches on Sunday anything like he did Tuesday in Atlanta, the Pirates should have little trouble supporting Burnett. The right-hander gave up a career-high eight runs over four innings in an 11-3 loss after posting a 0.47 ERA in three starts following a two-week stint in the minors.

"I'm feeling good, but it was a bad day,' Nicasio said. "It was a bad game. I'm working hard for next time. I need to win. I need to win. I love the game. It's hard.'

Struggling on the road is nothing new for Nicasio. Opponents have an .865 OPS when he pitches outside of Denver, the fourth-worst mark for an NL starter.

Nicasio fared well, however, in his lone previous appearance at PNC Park. He held the Pirates to a run over 6 2-3 innings April 25, 2012, as the Rockies went on to win 2-1.

Colorado All-Star Carlos Gonzalez could return after being held out of the lineup the past four days with a sprained right middle finger.

Even when they're struggling at the plate, solid pitching continues to help the Tampa Bay Rays win games.

Roberto Hernandez looks to continue his success against the NL and help the Rays build on an extra-inning victory Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.

Tampa Bay (65-45) averaged 4.7 runs while winning five of six before totaling three runs in the last three games. However, the Rays managed enough to avoid a third straight loss with Saturday's 2-1, 10-inning victory over San Francisco.

Wil Myers had two hits, including the winning single with the bases loaded, and David Price threw nine strong innings in his duel with fellow Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum to help the Rays snap the Giants' three-game winning streak.

The Rays are 11-3 against NL opponents this season while San Francisco (49-60) is 3-7 against the AL.

Tampa Bay's starting pitchers are second in the AL with a 3.77 ERA, and have allowed one or no runs 39 times.

Hernandez (6-11, 4.71 ERA) gave up two Tuesday, but he also completed his first game since 2010 when he was pitching for Cleveland and known as Fausto Carmona. The right-hander surrendered a two-run homer in the ninth inning and four other hits in a 5-2 win over Arizona to improve to 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA against NL opponents this season.

Hernandez has allowed three or fewer runs in six straight starts.

"I controlled, threw strikes, kept the ball down, made a lot of ground balls,' Hernandez said. "Whenever I go to the mound, I never think about what happened (previously). I think about today.'

Hernandez's only appearance against the Giants came in 2011 when he yielded three runs in six innings of a 3-1 loss.

Myers, who had his 12-game hitting streak snapped in Friday's 4-1 loss, is batting .431 with 15 RBIs in his last 17 contests. He recorded his first walk-off hit in front of his parents Saturday.

"He does not lack for confidence,' manager Joe Maddon said. "He really wanted to be in that moment.'

Jeff Francoeur had three hits but the top four hitters in San Francisco's lineup went 0 for 16 on Saturday.

Third basemen Pablo Sandoval is 1 for 13 in August. Buster Posey is 1 for 7 in the series and 5 for 34 in his last 10 games.

Guillermo Moscoso makes his first start of the season Sunday after he allowed a two-run homer, another hit, two walks and struck out three in 2 2-3 innings of a 7-3 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday in his Giants debut.

Acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 26, the right-hander gets the chance to start now that Barry Zito has been relegated to the bullpen.

"How long this will be, I can't tell you," manager Bruce Bochy told the Giants' official website. "But it was time to mix it up, change it up."

Moscoso went 8-10 with a 4.10 ERA in 24 starts during 2011 and 2012 for Oakland and Colorado. He was 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA in two starts against Tampa while with Oakland in 2011.

Evan Longoria is hitless in his last 17 at_bats, but is 1 for 3 with a double and three walks versus Moscoso.
