MLB Top 3: Monday starters who struggle at home
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The majority of starting pitchers post stronger overall numbers in their home park than on the road. Yet, every season a handful of hurlers wind up struggling in front of their home crowd.

Here are three Monday starters who have fared better in enemy territory:

R.A. Dickey, Toronto Blue Jays (9-12, 4.49 ERA)

Dickey's first season in Toronto has been an unmitigated disaster. The defending National League Cy Young Award winner has failed to live up to the lofty expectations of Blue Jays fans - particularly at the Rogers Centre, where he's 4-6 with a 5.79 ERA and has surrendered 19 home runs in just 82 1/3 innings.

The Blue Jays open a three-game series with the New York Yankees on Monday.

Zach Wheeler, New York Mets (6-2, 3.49 ERA)

While Wheeler's entire body of work during his rookie season has been impressive, his home resume has not. The highly-touted 23-year-old is a pedestrian 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA at Citi Field - compared to a 4-0, 2.11 mark on the road - and has allowed six home runs in 27 innings in his own stadium.

The Mets entertain the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday in the opener of a four-game set.

Tyler Lyons, St. Louis Cardinals (2-4, 5.09 ERA)

While Lyons' sample size is small, the results have been downright dreadful so far. The 25-year-old has surrendered eight runs on 11 hits over eight innings in two starts at Busch Stadium, walking five batters and allowing the opposition to hit .344.

The Cardinals welcome the Cincinnati to town for a three-game series beginning Monday.

                • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

                  Lookahead spot

Week 1 of the college football season has featured some close calls for BCS contenders in recent years, and this week’s slate of games will be no different. One potential stunner could come when the No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners host the UL Monroe Warhawks as 23.5-point favorites Saturday. The Sooners are trying to budge their way to the front of the crammed Big 12 and have a huge game against West Virginia, which could help determine the final pecking order, in Week 2.

The Warhawks, who return 17 starters – including dual-threat QB Kolton Browning - and will contend for the Sun Belt crown, have a taste for early upsets. They started Arkansas’ 2012 tumble with a Week 1 upset and covered in three straight versus the Hogs, Auburn and Baylor to open last season. The 23.5 points are an awful lot with OU potentially looking past UL Monroe in the opener.

                  Letdown spot

The Montreal Alouettes can breathe a little easier after a thrilling come-from-behind win over the BC Lions last week. The Als earned just their third win of the summer and the first since firing head coach Dan Hawkins, despite missing veteran QB Anthony Calvillo as well as many other key players to injury.

That victory takes a lot of pressure off GM/interim coach Jim Popp but sets Montreal up for a big fall when it travels to Toronto September 3. The Als will likely send rookie QB Tanner Marsh out as the starter after a surprise showing versus the Lions, hoping for a repeat performance. The Argonauts spanked the Als 38-13 as 2-point road faves in early August, limiting Calvillo to 16-of-30 passing for 202 yards and an interception.

                  Schedule spot

The Connecticut Sun have a West Coast road trip at the worst possible time. The team has lost four straight and has just one win in its last eight outings, posting a depressing 2-6 ATS mark in that stretch. The Sun play three in a row against Western Conference foes, starting in Los Angeles Tuesday, then heading to Seattle and Phoenix before the month is through.

Connecticut is just 3-9 ATS on the road with plenty of that damage coming versus the West, who have dealt Sun backers a 2-7 ATS count this season. The Sun are scoring an average of 68.1 points away from home – almost six points less than as hosts – and have averaged 67.2 points in losses compared to a lofty 82.0 points in their seven wins.

                  • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- 1,086,627 kids played high school football in this country last year.

-- Texans' DE Antonio Smith's one-game suspension costs him $353,000.

-- 7-footer DJ Haley has transferred to USC; he gives Trojans a bigger body inside to compete in the Pac-12. He has one year left to play.

-- 6-foot-10 Aaric Murray has washed out of LaSalle/West Virginia, now he tries it at Texas Southern, where he'll play for Mike Davis, the old Indiana coach. Murray's talent should dominate the SWAC.

-- TCU has some good freshmen coming in, but they lost junior forward Devonta Abron to a torn achilles. He started 15 games, averaged 7.4 ppg.

-- This was second Saturday in a row with no 1:00 baseball games; with the college football starting this week, baseball definitely takes a back seat.

                    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                    13) Super Bowl champs are 6-2-2 vs spread in their first game the next year, but are 2-8 vs spread in Game 2 the following year. Champs are 5-1 SU in Week 2 the last six years, but only one of those five wins was by more than seven points, and defending champs tend to be big favorites.

                    12) Golfer Kevin Chappell led by two strokes after 10 holes Sunday, then shot +7 over his last eight holes; Matt Kuchar was -11 and a contender thru eight holes, then shot +6 over his last ten holes. Golfers=mentally fragile.

                    11) Will the Dodgers' amazing mid-season run make teams more hesitant to fire skippers who are struggling? LA could have canned Mattingly back in June, but they didn't, and now they're a playoff team.

                    10) Red Sox took two of three in LA this weekend, first time Dodgers lost a series since June 14-16 in Pittsburgh. Boston went 4-2 in California this week, scoring 31 runs in the four wins, 0-2 in the two losses. They were a lucky team, missing Greinke-Kershaw-Cain-Bumgarner on the trip.

                    9) Nationals traded David DeJesus to Tampa Bay, Kurt Suzuki to the A's, helping two teams that are fighting local rival Baltimore for a playoff spot. You think Washington would rather the Orioles miss the playoffs?

                    8) Jets' QB situation is a disaster, could they be waiting for the Eagles to cut Dennis Dixon so they can pick him up and make him their starter? Philly has Vick-Foles-Barkley-Dixon, so Dixon figures to go.

                    7) Buffalo Bills' QB situation is a disaster; they signed Matt Leinart and traded for Thaddeus Lewis, who played for David Cutcliffe at Duke. Lewis used to be the Rams' 3rd-string QB, I always thought he had lot of promise, was upset when they let him get away to Cleveland. Cutcliffe is a QB guru who worked with both Manning brothers in college.

In any case, its not good when you're trading for QBs on August 25.

                    6) Lot of major league teams have fantasy football leagues; someone posted a picture of the setup for the Diamondbacks' draft on Twitter, in the ballroom of a hotel- it looked like the NFL Draft. Three big screens, multiple laptops, tables with tablecloths. Looked like serious stuff.

                    5) Prince Fielder has played in 473 consecutive games, and he DH'd in only 17 of those games. He is listed at 5-11, 275. Baseball players overtrain, which is why so many of them get hurt. Fielder doesn't get hurt, and he sure as hell doesn't overtrain. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

                    4) Bronx Bombers have spring training in Tampa and have lot of fans in that bay area, but they're 13-23 in their last 36 games at Tropicana Field.

                    3) When dust settles in Jacksonville, I'm thinking Chad Henne will start at QB for the Jaguars. Maybe not right away, but I think he's better than Blaine Gabbert and that will play out, over time.

                    2) SMU beat Kentucky for a hoop recruit UK really wanted? Emmanuel Mudiay picked SMU over Baylor, Kansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State. He is the highest-rated player (#5 in ESPN's top 100) to ever choose the Mustangs. NCAA enforcement staff will be heading to Dallas soon. :-)

SMU also gave Mudiay's older brother a scholarship, which didn't hurt, since the kid is an ordinary player at a junior college. They got a star recruit by using two scholarships instead of one, which struggling teams have to do.

                    1) Golfer Erik Compton advanced to the next round of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs, continuing a tremendous sports story that is largely ignored by mainstream media. Compton has had two heart transplants-- the guy is on his third freakin' heart!!!! Truly an amazing story.

                          • Preview: Athletics (73-57) at Tigers (77-54)
                            Game: 2
                            Venue: Comerica Park
                            Date: August 27, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

Plenty of pitchers would be more than pleased to have Justin Verlander's numbers, but they're not nearly good enough for the former AL MVP.

He has nothing to scoff at when it comes to his recent outings against the Oakland Athletics, though.

Verlander seeks to win a seventh consecutive start against visiting Oakland on Tuesday night while helping the Detroit Tigers bounce back from a loss in the series opener.

Verlander (12-9, 3.68 ERA) allowed six runs and 10 hits in seven innings of Detroit's 7-6 loss to Minnesota on Thursday to mark the seventh start he's given up at least five runs, which hasn't happened since he did so nine times in 2009.

The right-hander is on pace for his worst ERA since finishing with a 4.84 mark while going 11-17 in 2008.

"It has been a real grind for me all season," Verlander said. "When you look at my numbers and then look at my record, you realize it could be a lot worse."

Verlander's recent starts against the A's, though, couldn't have gone much better. He's won the last six, including Game 1 and Game 5 of last season's Division Series, while posting a 0.63 ERA.

He gave up one run and three hits in six innings of a 7-3 road victory April 13 over Oakland, which had lost four of five prior to winning 8-6 in the opener of this four-game set Monday.

The A's (73-57) trail Texas by a slim margin in the AL West, though they hold a two-game edge on Cleveland for the league's second wild-card spot. Coco Crisp went 3 for 6 with a solo homer - his fourth in five games - while also contributing a diving catch in the bottom of the eighth as Detroit was attempting to rally.

Crisp, who didn't play in Verlander's last start against the A's, is hitting .364 in the regular season off him.

"They were swinging the bats good, and we didn't pitch good," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "Our pitchers have been terrific, but they got beat. No big deal."

Victor Martinez went 4 for 5 and Miguel Cabrera homered for the third time in four games, a two-run shot for his 43rd of the season. The AL Central-leading Tigers (77-54) were coming off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets over the weekend.

Detroit looks to bounce back against Oakland starter Tommy Milone, who may need a solid outing to avoid being sent to the bullpen.

Milone (9-9, 4.30) was demoted to Triple-A after giving up six runs and nine hits in 3 2-3 innings of an 8-3 loss to Texas on Aug. 2, and his return to the club didn't go much better Aug. 18. He allowed three runs - one earned - and six hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 7-3 win over Cleveland.

The left-hander was recalled after Bartolo Colon went on the disabled list, though he's in danger of being placed in a relief role.

"Getting sent down obviously isn't something I wanted to happen, but it's kind of eye-opening," Milone said. "I just have to go out there and take it one game at a time, and hopefully they stick with me."

Milone has been solid against the Tigers, going 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in three career starts. His last outing versus Detroit was in Oakland's 5-4 walkoff loss in Game 2 of the ALDS, when he gave up one run and struck out six in six innings.

Having Deter Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in the lineup did little to bolster their offense, though the New York Yankees might not need much scoring with Andy Pettitte on the mound.

Pettitte will try to continue his successful run against the Toronto Blue Jays and keep the visiting Yankees from sliding back in the AL wild-card hunt Tuesday night.

New York (69-62) started both Jeter and Rodriguez for the first time this season Monday. Rodriguez hit his 650th career home run, but the pair went a combined 1 for 7 as the Yankees fell 5-2 for their eighth loss in 11 road games.

Jeter, who went 0 for 3 after missing 22 games with a calf strain, is 4 for 8 with two home runs against Tuesday's starter J.A. Happ (3-3, 5.10 ERA).

"He looked fine," manager Joe Girardi said. "Everything looked OK to me."

Robinson Cano is hitting .211 in his past 19 road games after going 0 for 4 in Monday's loss that ended a 10-game winning streak against the Blue Jays (59-73). The All-Star second baseman is batting .351 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 14 games versus Toronto this season.

The Yankees have scored 2.3 runs per game and batted .212 while dropping three of four after averaging 6.3 runs and hitting .314 during a 10-2 stretch that vaulted them back into playoff contention. They're 4 1/2 games behind Oakland for the final wild-card spot, with Cleveland and Baltimore ahead of them.

New York will attempt to generate some run support for Pettitte (9-9, 4.26), who looks to win three straight starts for the first time since his first three outings of the year.

Since going 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA during a five-start stretch, Pettitte has allowed one earned run over 12 2-3 innings to win his last two.

The left-hander has had the Blue Jays' number, going 6-1 with a 3.04 ERA in his last eight meetings. He's also gone 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA in his last seven in Toronto.

Pettitte looks to earn his third victory against Toronto this season after he gave up one run and four hits over six innings in Thursday's 5-3 home win.

He's limited Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie to a combined 2 for 20 over the past two seasons, though Rajai Davis is 9 for 17 with a home run and triple all-time in their matchups.

Pettitte might also have his hands full with Jose Reyes, who is batting .387 in his last nine games against the Yankees.

"We just need to finish this one strong so that we go to spring training with a better feeling," said Reyes of his last-place Blue Jays, who look for their first three-game winning streak since Aug. 4-6.

Happ is scheduled to make his fifth start since returning from a skull fracture and sprained knee, the result of being hit in the head by a line drive May 7 at Tampa Bay.

The left-hander hopes to bounce back after allowing four runs and five walks over 5 1-3 innings in Thursday's loss at Yankee Stadium. He had yielded three runs and three walks over 12 1-3 innings in his previous two outings.

"I've been feeling good since coming back," said Happ, who fell to 2-1 with a 5.46 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees.

Ichiro Suzuki has gone 4 for 7 with two doubles when facing Happ, but Cano (3 for 14) and Alfonso Soriano (3 for 11) have struggled.

                              • Preview: Marlins (49-80) at Nationals (65-65)
                                Game: 1
                                Venue: Nationals Park
                                Date: August 27, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

After watching their winning streak come to an end, the Washington Nationals will try to bounce back against the NL's worst team.

The Nationals look to continue their recent home success against the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game set Tuesday night.

Washington (65-65) had averaged 7.6 runs during a season high-tying five-game winning streak before falling 6-4 at Kansas City on Sunday. Denard Span went deep and had four of the team's 14 hits, but the Nationals went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

"It hurts, but we're not going to win the rest of our games," said pitcher Dan Haren, whose team is hitting .314 in its last six. "We're going to lose a few. Offensively, we're swinging the bats really well. It's a good time for an off day (Monday). We'll take a day to regroup and then get after the Marlins."

The Nationals have taken six of nine from the Marlins this year, including all three home matchups by an 11-1 margin. Washington has compiled a 10-3 home record versus Miami dating to September 2011.

The Marlins (49-80) hit the road after concluding a 3-7 homestand with Sunday's 4-3 loss to Colorado, their fifth defeat in six games. Justin Ruggiano stayed hot with his 15th homer, but Miami committed two errors and went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

"We're not a team that's equipped to make a lot of mistakes, and when we do make mistakes they usually come back to haunt us and you saw that again today," manager Mike Redmond said.

The Marlins now give the ball to Nathan Eovaldi (2-4, 3.82 ERA). The right-hander has gone 0-4 with a 4.50 ERA over a seven-start stretch since yielding three runs and three hits in six innings to beat Washington 8-3 on July 12, his only matchup in the series.

After giving up career highs of 11 runs and 12 hits in three-plus innings in a 14-10 loss to San Francisco on Aug. 16, Eovaldi allowed three runs in seven innings in a 4-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

"He looked really sharp, and he threw some great fastballs, well-located," Redmond told MLB's official website.

The Nationals will turn to Ross Ohlendorf (2-0, 2.58) for his fourth start of the year. In his first outing since returning from the disabled list due to shoulder inflammation, Ohlendorf surrendered four runs in 4 1-3 innings in Wednesday's 11-6 road win over the Chicago Cubs.

"I was just glad to get back out there," he said. "I felt good. I wish I'd pitched deeper in the game for us, but our offense did an awesome job. ... I was really happy with my fastball."

The right-hander has a 7.29 ERA in losing his last four starts to the Marlins, but threw four scoreless innings of relief opposite Eovaldi last month.

Ohlendorf will need to be careful against Ruggiano, who is 10 for his last 19 with three homers and eight RBIs in his last seven contests.

Washington's Bryce Harper is batting .394 with a homer and six RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak. Span has hit safely in nine straight, going 16 for 40 (.400).

Harper is batting .323 with six homers, nine RBIs and 14 runs in his last 15 games versus Miami.
