  • Preview: Rockies (60-70) at Marlins (48-79)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Marlins Park
    Date: August 24, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

NL rookie of the year candidate Jose Fernandez hasn't disappointed the home fans when he's pitched at Marlins Park.

They could be seeing him for one of the final times there this season as the Miami Marlins try to avoid their fifth straight loss Saturday night against the Colorado Rockies.

The league-worst Marlins (48-79), who rank last in the majors in runs and batting average, could get little done at the plate in Friday's 3-2 series-opening loss. Ryan Wheeler hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning as the Rockies (60-70) won for the second time in seven games.

While the Marlins have totaled seven runs and gone 2 for 26 with runners in scoring position during their losing streak, they likely won't need much offense to end it with Fernandez (9-5, 2.41 ERA) on the mound.

The All-Star right-hander has gone 7-2 with 105 strikeouts over 93 1-3 innings since June 1. His 1.64 ERA over that 14-start stretch is second in the majors to Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw (1.62).

Fernandez looks to win his fifth straight decision after fanning eight and allowing one earned run over six innings in a 6-2 victory over the NL West-leading Dodgers on Monday.

"Fernandez set the tone," manager Mike Redmond told the team's official website. "He had to grind a little bit, but he's had to do that his last couple of (starts)."

Fernandez leads all rookies with at least 15 starts in ERA, opponents' batting average (.189) and strikeouts (157). He's been particularly tough at Marlins Park, where he's 6-0 with a 1.40 ERA in 12 starts.

Because Miami plans to limit Fernandez to around 170 innings, this might be one of his last home starts. He's currently at 145 2-3 innings after throwing a season-high 109 pitches against the Dodgers.

"We set that deadline for a reason," Redmond said. "It's to take care of him and protect him. We realize this is a special kid who we want to keep healthy and have pitch for a long time."

Fernandez hasn't allowed a home run since Todd Helton took him deep in a 4-2 road win over the Rockies on July 23. He pitched seven innings in that game, giving up two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts.

DJ LeMahieu went 2 for 3 with a triple against Fernandez and he's 7 for 19 during a six-game hitting streak overall.

Teammate Troy Tulowitzki is batting .421 in a 10-game hitting streak, though Wilin Rosario had his streak snapped at 13 in the opener.

The Rockies will attempt to win consecutive road games for the first time since June 22-23 by giving the ball to Jeff Manship (0-3, 7.80), who seeks his first victory since Sept. 6, 2010, with Minnesota.

After allowing two runs over five innings in a 2-1 loss at Citi Field on Aug. 8, Manship has given up 11 runs and 14 hits - four home runs - over 10 innings in his last two starts.

The right-hander yielded four runs in the fourth inning and ended up allowing five over five frames in a 5-4 loss at Philadelphia on Monday.

    • Preview: Brewers (56-72) at Reds (73-56)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Great American Ball Park
      Date: August 24, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Reds' latest surge has helped put them in a solid position for a third playoff berth in four years, but they've had some trouble with Khris Davis and the Milwaukee Brewers recently

Cincinnati looks to avoid a fourth loss to Milwaukee in nine days when these clubs continue their three-game series Saturday night at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds (73-56) have won 12 of 17 and hold a seven-game edge on Arizona for the NL's second wild-card spot. That run also has helped tightened the Central Division race, though the Brewers have presented quite a challenge lately.

Milwaukee (56-72) has beaten the Reds three times in the last four meetings, including Friday's 6-4 win. Davis hit a pair of two-run homers and is batting .467 with five homers during a nine-game hitting streak.

The rookie left fielder has filled in nicely for Ryan Braun, who Thursday apologized for using performance-enhancing drugs and the ensuing scandal.

"I don't see any flaws in him right now,' manager Ron Roenicke said of Davis. "He's really doing a good job.'

Reds manager Dusty Baker has taken notice, too. Davis is 8 for 14 with four homers and eight RBIs in five games against his club.

"That Davis is the best young player I've seen come into the league this year," Baker said.

Brandon Phillips hit a solo homer and Zack Cozart drove in two runs for Cincinnati, which had won five of the first six home meetings with Milwaukee prior to Friday.

The Reds' most recent success against the Brewers in the last week-plus came Sunday, when they earned a 9-1 victory at Miller Park to split a four-game series. Cincinnati scored five times in the second inning off Wily Peralta, who will be on the mound again Saturday.

Peralta (8-13, 4.60 ERA) has made four starts against the Reds this season with varying results. His best start was a three-hitter in a 2-0 win July 9 for his first career shutout, but he then allowed a season-worst seven runs in 4 1-3 innings Sunday.

The right-hander, who is 1-4 with a 5.93 ERA in his last five starts overall, is 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA against Cincinnati on the year.

"Hopefully he bounces back and the next one is a good one," Roenicke said. "He'll go on a good run and have two or three good starts, and you think he's just going to take off and do that every time and he doesn't. The inconsistencies we have seen from him (are troubling)."

Peralta gave up four runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss to the Reds on May 12, with Bronson Arroyo picking up the win for Cincinnati.

Arroyo (12-9, 3.40), who again opposes Peralta, has won three straight starts while posting a 1.80 ERA after yielding three runs in six innings of Monday's 5-3 victory over Arizona despite not feeling his best.

"Some days you go run a marathon, and a third of the way in, you're like, 'I don't know how I'm going to make it to the end of this road.' That's the way I felt," Arroyo said. "I got some strikeouts that I really needed and the offense put up enough runs to give me that cushion."

The right-hander scattered five hits in 6 2-3 scoreless innings to beat Milwaukee in May, then gave up a season-worst 12 hits but only three runs in 7 2-3 frames of Cincinnati's 4-3, 10-innings win over the Brewers on June 14.

      • Preview: Blue Jays (57-72) at Astros (42-85)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Minute Maid Park
        Date: August 24, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The recent performance of Brad Peacock is one of the reasons the Houston Astros have felt comfortable with their decision to use a six-man rotation.

Peacock will be feeling that way if the Astros can build on a rare outburst at the plate.

The right-hander hopes to continue making the most of his opportunity and deal the visiting Toronto Blue Jays their seventh straight loss Saturday night.

With their highest run total of the season at Minute Maid Park, the Astros (42-85) snapped their six-game home losing streak with a 12-4 victory in Friday's series opener against the Blue Jays (57-72). They hadn't scored more since a 16-10 win at Seattle on April 9.

Major league-worst Houston had averaged 3.4 runs while dropping 17 of its previous 20 home games.

Rookie Robbie Grossman homered and had four RBIs, raising his average to .356 during a 10-game hitting streak. Matt Dominguez went deep for the fourth time in seven games, a stretch in which he's 11 for 27.

The Astros will try to stay hot for Peacock (2-4, 5.59 ERA) as they look to win consecutive home games for the first time since a three-game run from June 14-16.

Since his recall from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 4, Peacock has fanned 20 while going 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA over 19 1-3 innings in three starts. He had gone 1-3 with an 8.44 ERA in five April starts.

"He's much improved from the other stints in which he was up here," manager Bo Porter said. "When you come up and go down, you're given certain information on what you need to do to pitch at this level. These guys are taking heed to that information."

Peacock earned his first victory since April 10 in his last outing, yielding two runs - none earned - and four hits over 6 1-3 innings in an 8-2 win over the Angels on Aug. 16.

"I had everything,' Peacock said. "That's the best I've felt since I got back up here.'

He appears to have a chance for another strong start against a Toronto team that has averaged 2.7 runs and hit .152 with runners in scoring position during its losing streak.

Jose Reyes, however, went 2 for 4 Friday, leaving him 9 for 18 in his last five games against the Astros. Brett Lawrie homered and is batting .381 over his last 22 games overall.

After belting his 32nd home run in the opener, All-Star Edwin Encarnacion has gone 10 for 16 with three homers and nine RBIs in his last five games versus Houston.

Toronto's Chien-Ming Wang (1-1, 7.13) is scheduled to make his first start in the majors since July 2. The right-hander allowed 13 runs and 14 hits in two starts before being sent to the minors, failing to escape the second inning in either.

Wang was 4-3 with a 3.18 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Buffalo since July 7.

        • Preview: Yankees (68-60) at Rays (73-53)
          Game: 2
          Venue: Tropicana Field
          Date: August 24, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

David Price's dominance is a big reason why the Tampa Bay Rays are atop the AL East by percentage points.

CC Sabathia may be one of the reasons the New York Yankees aren't even close.

Price looks to continue his impressive stretch while Sabathia attempts to show some dramatic improvement in the middle game of this series Saturday night.

Tampa Bay (73-53) is in a virtual tie with Boston for the division lead, but the Rays have played fewer games to gain a small edge.

Price (7-5, 3.29 ERA) has compiled a 1.89 ERA over his last 10 starts, the lowest in the AL since July 1. Over that stretch, he's 6-1 while tossing three complete games and limiting opponents to 60 hits and five walks in 76 1-3 innings.

His streak of reaching at least the seventh inning ended at nine games Monday, though, when he labored through 99 pitches in five innings while allowing two runs and 10 hits in a 4-3 win at Baltimore.

"You have to give David credit," manager Joe Maddon said. "David did not have his best night, but nevertheless ... I really, really appreciated his effort."

Price, though, is 1-4 with a 3.84 ERA in nine home starts, including a 4-3 loss to the Yankees (68-60) on April 23 in which he allowed three runs in eight innings. That's been all too common for Price against them, as he's 1-2 with a 4.30 ERA over his last six home meetings, getting backed by two or fewer runs in four of those outings.

He may have found some comfort in Tampa Bay opening this three-game set by hitting four homers in a 7-2 win.

Another strong performance at the plate could be in order since Sabathia (11-10, 4.83) is 2-3 with a 7.75 ERA in seven starts.

The left-hander, though, has won his last two games partly due to getting 15 runs of support. He's surrendered nine runs with 12 strikeouts and 11 walks in 11 1-3 innings in those victories.

The offense bailed out Sabathia again Sunday, when he gave up six runs and issued five walks in 5 1-3 innings of a 9-6 win at Boston.

Sabathia, who is trying to win a third straight start for the first time since April 7-17, has an 8.31 ERA while losing three of his four starts against the Rays this year. That includes a 10-6 loss July 26, when he was battered for seven runs and nine hits in five innings.

The ace's struggles may be partly to blame for the Yankees entering play 6 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the East and 3 1/2 back of Oakland for the league's second wild-card spot.

New York became a factor in the postseason chase by winning 10 of 12 prior to Friday's loss, but manager Joe Girardi isn't worried.

"It's one game," Girardi said. "We've just come off playing extremely well. You have to turn the page and go win (Saturday)."

Production from Alex Rodriguez would surely help. The embattled third baseman is 0 for 10 over the past three games after hitting .320 in his first 13 following his return from hip surgery.

He's 6 for 28 (.214) with 12 strikeouts over the last three seasons versus Price.

The Rays' Jose Lobaton may be back behind the plate since he's 9 for 17 (.529) with a triple, two homers and seven RBIs in five games. He had two hits, including a three-run homer, and four RBIs on Friday.

          • Preview: Braves (77-51) at Cardinals (75-53)
            Game: 3
            Venue: Busch Stadium
            Date: August 24, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

The St. Louis Cardinals are playing much better than the last time they were in the midst of a series with the Atlanta Braves.

Looking to continue their surge, the Cardinals try for a fourth consecutive win to secure their first series victory over the Braves in two years Saturday night at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis (75-53) scored three times while being swept at Atlanta from July 26-28. That was the beginning of a season-high seven-game slide that dropped the Cardinals out of first place in the NL Central.

Though St. Louis remains a game behind first-place Pittsburgh in the division, it leads the wild-card race and won nine of 12.

After opening this four-game set between likely postseason clubs with a 6-2 victory, Adam Wainwright tossed a six-hitter during the Cardinals' 3-1 win over the East-leading Braves (77-51) on Friday.

"It's always good to do that and I feel like our team needed it," Wainwright said.

These two victories followed a stretch where Atlanta won five straight and eight of nine regular season games against the Cardinals. St. Louis last won a series from Atlanta with a three-game home sweep Sept. 9-11.

Yadier Molina had three hits and Matt Holliday homered for the Cardinals on Friday.

Among the major league leaders with a .337 average, Molina is 13 for 26 in six games since he went 0 for 5 on Aug. 15 - his first game since a two-week stint on the disabled list with a sprained right knee.

Molina is 5 for 8 his last two games against Atlanta but 0 for 3 against scheduled starter Julio Teheran (10-6, 2.96 ERA), who is 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA in his last six starts.

After giving up four runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss to Philadelphia on Aug. 12, Teheran allowed five hits, walked three and stranded nine runners in six scoreless innings of a 2-1 victory over Washington on Sunday.

"Know every time I get into trouble like that, I can just get out of it," he told the Braves' official website. "That's the confidence that I have."

Teheran, 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA in his last three road starts, faced St. Louis at home July 27 when he gave up two hits and fanned six in seven innings while not factoring in the decision of a 2-0 win.

In the mix with Molina for the NL batting title, Chris Johnson is batting .332 after going 2 for 4 on Friday as the Braves lost for the third time in four road contests. That followed a six-game winning streak away from home.

Johnson is 9 for 17 against the Cardinals this season, and 2 for 3 versus scheduled St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (11-8, 2.98).

Since being hit on the elbow with a line drive Aug. 7, Miller is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two starts. He have gave up two runs, five hits and walked four while striking out eight over 5 1-3 innings of an 8-5 win at Milwaukee on Monday.

The right-hander allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-2 loss at Atlanta on July 28.

            • Preview: Cubs (54-74) at Padres (58-70)
              Game: 2
              Venue: PETCO Park
              Date: August 24, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

Jeff Samardzija was more than happy the Chicago Cubs' offense got off to a fast start as he completed one of his best outings of the season five days ago.

He also watched as the Cubs squandered a victory after a stellar first inning in their series opener with the San Diego Padres.

Visiting Chicago looks to avoid a fifth consecutive loss Saturday night as it faces a Padres team seeking a fifth victory in seven games.

The last-place Cubs (54-74) took a 6-0 lead before recording an out Friday, as Nate Schierholtz hit a three-run homer and Brian Bogusevic added a two-run triple.

They wouldn't score again, though, as San Diego rallied for an 8-6 victory. Chicago became the first team to score six runs before an out was made and lose since Pittsburgh's 9-8 loss to Cincinnati on May 18, 2006.

"It's not the ideal start, but there is nine innings of baseball left and anything can happen,' said Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko, who hit a pair of homers and drove in a career-high four runs. "We had great at_bats up and down the lineup.'

Chicago's Junior Lake had three hits and is 12 for 26 during a six-game hitting streak, though that didn't make the loss any easier for Cubs manager Dale Sveum.

"They beat our butts the last eight innings,' Sveum said.

The Cubs have dropped six of seven, with Samardzija (7-11, 4.12 ERA) recording the only victory Monday against Washington. After Chicago gave him only four total runs over his previous four starts, Samardzija benefited greatly from the offense scoring three runs in the first, saying it helped him settle down.

Samardzija had gone 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA over his previous three starts before tossing a six-hitter in the 11-1 win.

"All the hard work I do in the offseason and during the year, to see it paying off with feeling good in the eighth and ninth inning and 100 pitches is what it's all about," Samardzija said.

The right-hander struck out eight and gave up three runs in five innings of Chicago's 5-3 win over the Padres on April 29, and he's 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA in three career starts against them.

San Diego (58-70) has won five straight home meetings with the Cubs after Will Venable went 3 for 4 with three RBIs on Friday, including a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh.

The Padres look to win a third straight with help from Eric Stults, who is seeking his first victory since beating San Francisco on July 14.

Stults (8-10, 3.70) is 0-3 with a 4.75 ERA over his last six starts after giving up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of San Diego's 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.

"I felt better than I did in my last start in Colorado," said Stults, referring to when he allowed five runs and 11 hits in 4 2-3 innings Aug. 13. "It's always nice to be at home."

The left-hander has seemed to feel that way all season, going 5-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 12 starts at Petco Park as opposed to 3-8 with a 4.93 ERA on the road.

Stults gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings of the Padres' 4-2 win May 2 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs rank 28th in the majors against left-handers this season, hitting .230, and Saturday will be their first look at a southpaw starter in 16 games.

                Date: August 24, 2013 9:05 PM EDT

Manager Clint Hurdle may not like labels, but Francisco Liriano is clearly the Pittsburgh Pirates' ace.

He's also proving to be one of the major factors in the NL Central race.

Liriano will try to give the Pirates some breathing room atop the division by continuing his unexpected dominance Saturday night against the San Francisco Giants.

Liriano (14-5, 2.53 ERA) has already matched his career high in wins set in 2010 with Minnesota, and he's one shy of his total over the last two years with the Twins and Chicago White Sox.

Various injuries have derailed the left-hander's eight-year career, and he started 2013 recovering from a broken right arm.

Liriano has become Pittsburgh's most reliable starter, leading the team in wins while owning the lowest ERA of any member of the rotation. His stunning revival is a big reason why the Pirates (76-52) are one game ahead of second-place St. Louis in the division chase.

Still, Hurdle isn't concerned if Liriano is considered the staff's ace.

"I'm not big on labels. I just like to pencil his name in every fifth day," Hurdle said. "I'd never take it for granted and I hope nobody else does when you watch a man go out there and pitch like he does. I hope there's some appreciation. He continues to just be masterful."

Liriano has been just that while winning his last two starts. He tossed a four-hitter in a 5-1 win at St. Louis on Aug. 14, and followed it up five days later by striking out a season-high 13 in seven scoreless innings of a 3-1 victory at San Diego.

Liriano earned a 12-8 victory in his only career meeting with the Giants, allowing four runs in six innings June 12.

He'll now try to help the Pirates improve to 5-1 on this seven-game road trip after they won 3-1 on Friday thanks to Clint Barmes' three-run homer in the seventh.

Pittsburgh took the opener of this four-game set 10-5 on Thursday.

Andrew McCutchen has four hits in this series, upping his major league-best average in August to .451. His recent staggering production may only continue since he's batting .475 with 10 RBIs and 12 runs during a 10-game hitting streak versus San Francisco.

The star center fielder has a .605 on-base percentage in his last eight games overall, but he's 2 for 14 with a double and a homer versus Saturday's starter, Tim Lincecum.

The Giants (56-72), who occupy the NL West basement, have dropped five of six at home while batting .219 and averaging 2.0 runs.

Buster Posey is struggling greatly at AT&T Park, mustering a .113 average and three RBIs over the past 17 games and going 1 for 6 in this series. The All-Star catcher went 0 for 3 with a strikeout versus Liriano on June 12.

A lack of support is nothing new to Lincecum (6-13, 4.53), who has been backed by one run or none in five of his six starts since the All-Star break. The right-hander is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA in that stretch after tossing his first career no-hitter on July 13.

Lincecum has surrendered 11 runs over 11 innings in losing his last two starts.

He's 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in a pair of starts against the Pirates the past two seasons, but both were in Pittsburgh. This is his first home meeting with them since tossing a four-hitter in a win July 27, 2009.

                • Preview: Angels (56-71) at Mariners (59-68)
                  Game 2
                  Venue: Safeco Field
                  Date: August 24, 2013 9:10 PM EDT

Thanks in part to an outstanding stretch on the road, Josh Hamilton is finally resembling the offensive threat the Los Angeles Angels expected all season.

The star slugger looks to hit safely in a career-best 12th straight road game as the Angels try to win consecutive games for the first time in two weeks Saturday night against the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners (59-68) came up short in manager Eric Wedge's return to the dugout as Chris Nelson's two-run home run off Felix Hernandez proved to be the difference in the Angels' 2-0 win on Friday.

"It was huge because you know he is not going to give up a lot," said Nelson, who had gone hitless in 17 at_bats prior to his second-inning homer.

Wedge, who suffered a mild stroke before a game July 22, said he intends on managing the rest of the season without restrictions.

"It's a shot across the bow, it's a mulligan, it's a heads up,' Wedge said. "And I'm taking it as such.'

Although he's batting a career-low .231 in the first of a five-year deal with the Angels, Hamilton went 2 for 4 with his 25th double as Los Angeles (56-71) snapped a five-game skid at Safeco Field. He's hitting .333 with three home runs and nine RBIs in his last 14 contests, raising his average 14 points.

Hamilton, whose lone hit in three at_bats against Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez (4-0, 5.94 ERA) was a home run, is batting .409 with two home runs, five doubles and 14 RBIs during his 11-game road hitting streak. He hasn't hit safely in that many consecutive road contests since an 11-game run with Texas from June 11-30, 2010.

Ramirez has gone 4-0 with a 4.80 ERA while receiving 4.6 runs per game over his last five starts - all Mariners victories. He recorded his first quality start Sunday at Texas, allowing two runs - one earned - and four hits over seven innings as Seattle eventually won 4-3.

The right-hander wasn't as sharp in his only career start against the Angels, getting tagged for five runs - three earned - and seven hits over six innings in a 5-4 loss in Anaheim on Sept. 25.

All-Star Mike Trout went 2 for 3 against Ramirez in that contest, but was 0 for 4 on Friday after missing three games due to tightness in his right hamstring. He's hitting .474 in his last 10 games against the Mariners.

Los Angeles looks to win for the fourth time in 13 games by giving the ball to left-hander Jason Vargas (6-5, 3.92), who has allowed seven runs and 15 hits in two starts after missing nearly two months following blood clot surgery in June.

The former Mariner, however, has pitched well against his old club, fanning 16 while going 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA in two meetings this season.

He's held Kendrys Morales and Kyle Seager hitless in a combined 14 at_bats this season. Both players are also slumping heading into this contest, with Morales batting .163 over his last 13 games and Seager hitting .134 in his last 18.
