  • Preview: Indians (67-58) at Angels (55-69)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
    Date: August 20, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

After learning Albert Pujols will be out for the year one day after Mike Trout suffered an injury that kept him out of the lineup, the Los Angeles Angels are searching for any sort of good news to lighten up a season that has provided its share of dark moments.

C.J. Wilson has been solid against the Cleveland Indians of late, and he'll look to help host Los Angeles win for only the fifth time in 16 tries Tuesday night.

Pujols, who has been out since July 26, had hoped to return later this season despite a partially torn plantar fascia in his left foot, but his season officially ended Monday when the team announced he won't play until 2014.

"Unless in two weeks something happens and we're only two or three games out ... is it worth it to come back and put yourself in a situation where you take that risk?" Pujols said. "That's the decision we all came to.'

Making matters worse, Trout was forced to sit out Monday's 5-2 loss to Cleveland after experiencing tightness in his right hamstring during Sunday's loss to Houston. Though Trout, who has reached base in 40 straight games, said the injury isn't serious, it's unclear if he'll be able to return for this contest.

"It feels a lot better,' Trout said before Monday's game. "I don't want to push it. We'll see how it feels (Tuesday).'

Mark Trumbo hit a solo homer in the ninth and drove in both runs as the disappointing Angels (55-69) lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

"You try not to chalk it up to any kind of excuses,' Trumbo said. "(Injuries aren't) really an excuse."

Wilson (13-6, 3.40 ERA), though, is 6-1 with a 2.58 ERA over his last nine starts after giving up one run in 6 2-3 innings of Thursday's 8-4 win over the New York Yankees despite allowing 11 hits.

"It just only matters that I got through it,' Wilson said.

The left-hander only made it through 5 1-3 innings against the Indians on Aug. 10 after throwing 117 pitches, but he gave up just two runs in a 7-2 win. Wilson is 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA in his last five starts versus Cleveland, which has won five of eight as it tries to gain ground in the playoff race.

Nick Swisher and Lonnie Chisenhall homered Monday for the Indians (67-58), who are 4 1/2 games behind Oakland for the AL's second wild-card spot and 6 1/2 back of Detroit in the Central.

"We just have to grind and battle, and hopefully this will snowball into something great for us at the end of the season,' Swisher said. "This thing ain't over, no doubt about it.'

Danny Salazar originally was scheduled to start Monday, but he'll be on the mound for this contest after manager Terry Francona decided to push him back one day.

Salazar (1-1, 4.08) allowed three runs on two homers in four innings of a 3-0 loss to Minnesota in his most recent outing Aug. 12. The 23-year-old rookie struck out five, giving him 22 in 17 2-3 innings.

The right-hander, though, has pitched 110 2-3 innings including the minors this season, and Francona isn't about to risk overworking a talented prospect.

"At this level ... because the lineups are better and the hitters are better, they're more stressful innings," Francona told the team's official website. "We have to balance where he is in his career."

    • Pirates (73-51) at Padres (56-69)
      Game: 2
      Venue: PETCO Park
      Date: August 20, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Until recently, A.J. Burnett's main problem was getting the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates to provide adequate run support to back his solid outings.

Though Burnett has hit a rut, San Diego Padres starter Tyson Ross continues to shine.

Burnett looks to bounce back from a couple of poor outings as he opposes Ross on Tuesday night at Petco Park.

After going 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA over seven starts from June 8-Aug. 4, Burnett (5-8, 3.18 ERA) has struggled over his last two. He gave up five earned runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-4 loss to Colorado on Aug. 10 before allowing the same numbers in just 4 1-3 frames of the Pirates' 6-5, 12-inning loss to St. Louis on Thursday.

Manager Clint Hurdle, though, isn't worried about his right-hander, whose 3.38 run-support average is seventh-worst in the majors.

"There's some things we've tried to identify from the last start and from this start," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I know also he's a guy that's experienced everything there is in the game and he will be good and ready to take the ball the next time."

It may not get much better for Burnett give his recent history against the Padres. He allowed 29 runners to reach base in 12 innings over two starts versus San Diego last year, yielding four earned runs in each outing.

He walked five at Petco Park on Aug. 21, just his second start in San Diego since his nine-walk no-hitter in 2001 with the Marlins.

Pittsburgh (73-51) got the best of the Padres in Monday's series opener, though, winning 3-1 after dropping 18 of the previous 21 meetings. Pedro Alvarez hit his NL-best 31st homer as the Pirates, who had lost seven of their previous nine, maintained their one-game lead on St. Louis and 2 1/2-game edge on Cincinnati in the NL Central race.

Pittsburgh may find it tough to make it two straight victories when it faces Ross (3-5, 2.62).

Ross has been stellar since rejoining the rotation July 23, going 3-1 with a 1.32 ERA in five starts. He allowed one run and five hits in seven innings before San Diego fell 4-1 to the New York Mets on Thursday.

"I'm just trying to improve on what I did the previous outing and just try and do better," Ross said.

The right-hander has a 0.79 WHIP during his hot stretch while striking out 36 in 34 innings.

"He's throwing the ball great,' manager Bud Black said. "I think he's really taken a lot of the instruction that he and (pitching coach) Darren (Balsley) are talking about as far as being able to locate the fastball, getting the slider in the strike zone and incorporating some changeups."

Ross, in his first season with the Padres after being acquired from Oakland in November, has never faced the Pirates.

San Diego (56-69), which has lost nine of 13, looks to provide some offense for Ross after going scoreless for the first eight innings Monday. Nick Hundley's double drove in Chase Headley for the Padres' only run.

Headley, with only eight home runs and 35 RBIs after breaking out for 31 homers and 115 RBIs in 2012, is just 6 for 37 (.162) over his last nine.

      • Preview: Red Sox (74-53) at Giants (55-69)
        Game: 2
        Venue: AT&T Park
        Date: August 20, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

The Boston Red Sox own the most wins in the AL, and the best overall record in interleague play has helped them accomplish that.

They're now hoping Xander Bogaerts can have an impact in his expected major league debut.

A day after being recalled from the minors, Bogaerts is expected to be in the lineup as the Red Sox attempt to win for the 10th time in 11 interleague games Tuesday night against the last-place San Francisco Giants.

Boston (74-53) leads the AL East by one game over Tampa Bay, and the Red Sox's success versus the opposite league has played a big role.

They're batting .327 and averaging 5.7 runs with a 10-3 interleague record compared to the Rays' 12-8 mark.

Boston has won 17 of 21 against the NL dating to last season, including four of five on the road after opening this three-game series with Monday's 7-0 rout of San Francisco (55-69).

Bogaerts, one of Boston's top prospects, provides depth at third base and shortstop, and hit .297 with 15 homers, 67 RBIs, 23 doubles and six triples in 116 minor league games between Triple-A and Double-A this season.

"He's had a very good year offensively," manager John Farrell said. "He's still got some development to do on the defensive side that he's working through, as well as on the basepaths. But we're talking about a young, exciting offensive player - a very good player all around that, at 20 years of age, is still developing. But we feel like he as a person and his abilities will give us a shot in the arm and make an impact here."

While Bogaerts will be looking to make an early impression, Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury will try to continue their interleague dominance.

Victorino, who spent his first nine seasons in the NL, is hitting .444 with six doubles and six RBIs in nine contests against his former league. The right fielder had three of Boston's 12 hits Monday with an RBI to improve to 7 for 14 over the past three games overall.

Ellsbury singled in the opener to extend his interleague hitting streak to 16 games. He's batting .435 with nine stolen bases during that stretch.

Another strong offensive showing could help Jake Peavy (9-5, 4.41 ERA), who was supported with only six hits in Thursday's 2-1 loss to Toronto. The veteran right-hander tossed six scoreless innings before allowing two runs without getting an out in the seventh.

He's 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA in three starts since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a three-team, seven-player deal last month.

Peavy is making his first appearance in San Francisco since April 21, 2009, with San Diego. He's 8-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 13 career starts there.

The Giants, who have dropped 12 of 16 at home, are scheduled to counter with Ryan Vogelsong (2-4, 6.75), who gave up three runs and six hits over 3 2-3 innings at Washington on Thursday. He stood to get the loss before the Giants scored three in the ninth en route to a 4-3 win.

He was much better six days earlier, limiting Baltimore to two runs in six innings of a 5-2 loss in 10 in his return from a broken hand that sidelined him for 2 1/2 months.

Vogelsong is 1-2 with a 6.68 ERA in six home starts this season, and is facing the Red Sox for the first time since June 19, 2005, with Pittsburgh.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 3: Standout second-half hitters
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The arrival of the All-Star break has translated to success for a number of major-league hitters. Several are enjoying solid summers after getting off to slow starts.

Here are three hitters who have improved dramatically since the All-Star break:

Adam Dunn, Chicago White Sox (.239, 28 HR, 73 RBIs)

Known for perennially having one of the lowest batting averages in the majors, Dunn has looked like a borderline batting champion since the break. The towering 33-year-old is batting a team-best .317 in the second half, while his 18 walks in that span also lead the club.

The White Sox open a three-game series in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Wil Myers, Tampa Bay Rays (.310, 9 HR, 37 RBIs)

The centerpiece in the off-season deal that saw pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis wind up with the Royals, Myers is enjoying a sensational second-half surge. The rookie right fielder is batting .333 with six homers and 22 RBIs in 25 second-half games - and he won't turn 23 until December.

The Rays resume their three-game series against the rival Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

Martin Prado, Arizona Diamondbacks (.278, 11 HR, 56 RBIs)

After middling through the first half of his initial season in Arizona, the former Atlanta Braves infielder has turned it on since the break. Prado had two hits Monday to increase his second-half average to .365 - over 110 points higher than his first-half mark.

The Diamondbacks continue their four-game set in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

                      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Former Texas hoop coach Tom Penders tweeted that the AAC (old Big East) will have more NCAA tourney teams than the new Big East.

-- NCAA came to its senses and declared the former Marine eligible to play football right away at Middle Tennessee. Good decision.

-- Kirk Cousins got hurt against the Steelers; Rex Grossman is the #3 QB for the Redskins. RGIII's timetable to play just sped up. A lot.

-- Angels announced that Albert Pujols is officially done for the year.

-- Did you know the Dodgers-Angels haven't traded with each other since a minor deal in March, 1976? (Orlando Alvarez for Ellie Rodriguez)

-- Cubs traded David De Jesus to Washington; hard to believe Nats won't have De Jesus next year, since it'll cost $1.5M to cut him. By trading him, Cubs saved $2.5M.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

                        13) First thing that hit me watching FOX Sports1 (from this point on called FS1) this weekend: damn, they hired a lot of former players. No former coaches; why doesn’t network TV hire more former coaches?

                        12) Should’ve counted on this but never thought of it: FOX football broadcasts are now basically infomercials for FS1, as it launches and tries to capture/hold an audience. Hiring Randy Moss was weird; not sure you should reward guys who weren’t good guys when they played. There are enough good guys out there who have a lot to say.

                        11) Still think FS1 would be helped a lot by a Jimmy the Greek type, a sharp pro handicapper to pick NFL games against the spread; ESPN has Hank Greenberg on Sports Center (who they greatly underuse, he is outstanding). You want to build an audience, give the viewer something that the competition isn’t giving them.

                        10) While FS1 hired a lot of former players, ESPN trends in the other direction, hiring the cerebral Keith Olbermann (knows an awful lot about baseball, but not very likeable) to go with Team Nitwit (Stephen A Smith/Skip Bayless) as non-athletes with a big on-air presence.

They even chose Bill Simmons over Stan Van Gundy for their NBA **** show, one of the worst decisions since Holy Cross declined to be a member of the original Big East 30+ years ago. Picking a non-athlete suit over a former coach for a **** show is insulting to the viewer.

                        9) Over the weekend, Bayless tweeted something about the Seahawks being a threat to New England in the AFC. Problem is, Seattle has been in the NFC since 2001. By all means, give this jackass more airtime.

                        8) Maria Sharapova fired Jimmy Connors as her coach after one match? Did I read that right? I dated someone once who was a really good tennis player when she was a teenager; wow did she have a temper!!! (Imagine anyone getting mad at me? Nope, me either) Tennis players seem to be a little bit on edge at all times. Lot of drama.

                        7) Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean has 122,000+ followers on Twitter, but the best Big Dozen hoop coach to follow on Twitter is Nebraska coach Tim Miles, who often tweets at halftime of games (one liners summing up the first half). Miles has built programs at North Dakota State and Colorado State and is a rising star in the coaching business.

                        6) Speaking of the Cornhuskers, their hoop opener with Florida Gulf Coast (remember them?) will be on the Big Dozen Network November 8. National TV for FGCU again? They better enjoy it, because with Andy Enfield at USC, normalcy will return fairly quickly.

                        5) Odd Stat of the Day #1, courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau: In the history of major league baseball, only three teams have been shut out in the first two games of a manager’s tenure; once in 1876, and twice this season, with the Marlins/Phillies.

                        4) Odd Stat of the Day #2, also courtesy of Elias: Milwaukee Brewers have made 21 errors behind Wily Peralta this year, the most any team has made behind any one pitcher this season. I thought that number would be higher.

                        3) December 7 (or first Saturday in December) used to be a dead day for college football, but now its Championship Saturday.

CBS added the Mountain West title game (new this year) at 10pm to cap off their day of football.

                        2) Michigan QB Devin Gardner was 40-1 to win the Heisman this year, now he’s 25-1. My longshot pick is the Mettenberger kid at LSU, now that he has an NFL coach (Cam Cameron) as his tutor.

                        1) There could be 39 bowl games next year, which would be fine, except for fact that teams with losing records should not play in a bowl game, and with less than 130 I-A teams, 39 bowls pretty much guarantees a few cruddy teams would play in a bowl every year.

I mean, 5-7 Pitt vs 5-7 Maryland in the Compass Bowl? Enough already, not that I won’t watch it, because I will unless there is college basketball on at the same time. Its just not right.
