I'm having real issues with my ISP this morning but it shouldn't be too much longer before I can actually get this stuff moving.

        Armadillo:Tuesday's six-pack

Reader Robert C sent us some interesting college football trends; thanks to Robert and hope these help your handicapping...........

-- Alabama is 25-11 vs spread in its last 36 games as road favorites.

-- Arizona covered seven of its last eight games against USC.

-- Baylor covered five of its last six games with Texas.

-- Central Florida covered twice in its last 13 conference games.

-- UConn covered 14 of its last 17 games as home underdogs.

-- Florida State covered its last nine bowl games.

        *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) If/when North Carolina parts ways with PJ Hairston over his various indiscretions, the line for his services will be how long? I’m thinking fairly long; if he’s good enough to be a Tar Heel, a lot of other schools will put up with his hijinx and give him a second (or third) chance.

        12) Brackets for Battle of Atlantis have been set: they avoided a hostile UTEP-USC (due to Isaac Hamilton's recruitment) first round matchup, and came up with: Kansas-Wake Forest, Villanova-USC, Tennessee-UTEP, Xavier-Iowa as first round games. Should be a good November tournament.

        11) Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater took out a $10M insurance policy on himself, to protect against loss of earnings due to injury. Wonder how much that cost? Bridgewater threw for 3,718 yards LY, with 27 TDs and only eight INTs.

        10) Milwaukee Brewers announced yesterday that each fan who shows up with a ticket to any of the team's 12 home games in August will receive a $10 voucher that will be good for food, beverages, tickets or merchandise.

Been a rough year at Miller Park, with a bad team, Ryan Braun's suspension.

        9) Hoops writer Frank Burlison, a sharp talent evaluator, notes that the high school kids playing summer ball in Las Vegas last couple weeks are much better outside shooters than kids in recent years- that’s good news for fans of the game, since watching kids throw up bricks all winter can be tiresome.

        8) Why does PGA Tour have four majors while Senior Tour has five?

        7) Graeme McDowell played a practice round at Oak Hill, where the PGA is being played next week and reports the rough is already very nasty. As much as its rained this summer, it doesn’t figure to get any better in the next ten days, since I doubt the PGA will mow it.

        6) Various levels of production; Nick Markakis/Giancarlo Stanton both had 11 hits last week, but Markakis had 11 singles, 4 runs scored, no RBI. Stanton had five doubles, three HRs, 7 runs scored and 6 RBI, with seven walks. When Stanton gets on a team with other good hitters around him, maybe in a smaller ballpark, watch out.

        5) Evan Longoria is a financial backer of a duckpin bowling alley/sports bar in Tampa called Ducky’s; duckpin bowling is very popular in New England.

Speaking of New England, Dustin Pedroia is 3-39 since All-Star break, but hey, he's gritty and he hustles.

        4) One of the prosecutors of the Penn State administrators in the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky fiasco is one Laura Ditka, Mike Ditka’s niece. Mike Ditka went to college at Pitt.

        3) On Sundays at Dodger Stadium, little kids can run the bases after the game; after Yasiel Puig’s walk-off homer in the 11th inning Sunday, it took a little longer for the kids to get around the bases, since most of them were sliding into home, the way Puig did after his dramatic homer. Nothing wrong with a little enthusiasm; you don’t want him hot dogging, don’t let him hit a homer.

        2) Job retention tip of the day: Don’t call hookers from your work phone, especially if you’re an Assistant District Attorney. This is why God made cell phones, especially the disposable kind your spouse doesn’t know about. An ADA in Brooklyn learned this the hard way last week.

        1) How badly does Hollywood want Hillary Clinton to be President? They’ve cast Diane Lane as her in an upcoming NBC miniseries; casting Diane Lane as Hillary Clinton is roughly the same as casting Brad Pitt as me, not very realistic. I’d vote for Diane Lane before I voted for Mrs Clinton.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

          Schedule spot

The Arizona Diamondbacks will get all the in-flight movies and snack-sized bags of peanuts they can handle this week. The D-backs just flew from San Diego to Tampa Bay, taking on the Rays Tuesday and Wednesday. Following the finale in St. Petersburg, Arizona jumps on a plane to Arlington for a make-up game with the Texas Rangers Thursday, stemming from a postponed contest back in May.

After that solo show in Texas, the Diamondbacks board another cross-country shuttle and rush back to the East Coast to play the Boston Red Sox for three games, starting Friday. When it’s all said and done, Arizona will have traveled roughly 4,800 miles to play six games. The D-backs are 24-27 on the road for +0.23 units this season, and that's with a normal travel schedule. Arizona could be road kill come the end of the week.

          Lookahead spot

Indianapolis Colts fans have October 20 circled on the calendar, anticipating the return of former star QB Peyton Manning to Lucas Oil Stadium. The Denver Broncos visit the Colts in Week 7, in what should be one of the biggest media blitzes of the 2013 season. People are already buzzing about the return of No. 18 and oddsmakers didn’t hesitate to offer early odds on this Sunday Night Football matchup, posting Indianapolis as a 4-point home underdog.

The Colts come into the Denver game on a short week, having to play at San Diego on Monday Night Football in Week 6. With the Chargers falling out of the AFC picture over the past few years, Indianapolis could get caught looking ahead to Manning and the Broncos. Books are dealing the Colts as early 2.5-point road dogs versus the Bolts, a valuable sub-FG spread for the home side.

          Letdown spot

The WNBA celebrated its finest with the annual All-Star Game this past weekend, and with it took an extended hiatus from the 2013 season. Teams stopped playing on Tuesday July 25, but some clubs have had an even longer break depending on how the schedule trickled down. The drawn-out All-Star break comes at a bad time for the first-place Minnesota Lynx.

Minnesota, which sits tops in the league at 14-3 SU and 10-7 ATS, had won seven straight games before the break, playing its last contest on July 24 – an 81-69 win over Phoenix. The Lynx don’t take the court again until Friday’s home game versus San Antonio, a momentum-killing stretch of nine full days off. Minnesota could come out flat facing what should be an inflated pointspread against on the West's worst clubs. The Lynx have also failed to cover in their last two outings.

Three things NFL bettors should watch during training camps

Football bettors got their first earful of NFL training camp noise this weekend. While the sports networks and talk radio waves are jammed packed with tidbits from camp, most of this information can be discarded.

But, there are some things pro handicappers keep close tabs on during NFL training. We asked our wiseguys what has their attention this summer:

            Injuries

The injury bug bit hard in the first few days of training camp. The Denver Broncos lost starting center Dan Koppen for the season to a torn ACL and Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert was carted off the field after spraining his ankle.

The Seattle Seahawks could be without new WR Percy Harvin for a while after he suffered a slight tear in his labrum and the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have WR Jeremy Maclin for 2013 after he tore his ACL.

“I just watch for injuries especially those on the offensive line,” says a capper for Doc’s Sports. “Having a banged-up line creates major issues for the quarterback and running back and it may take a few weeks for the backups to get up to par. If a team suffered a key offensive line injury it may be worth a look fading that team the first couple of weeks.”

NFC East bettors will also be keeping a watch on Robert Griffin III’s wonky knee and if the Washington Redskins’ dynamic QB will be ready to go – or even at 100 percent – come the season opener versus Philadelphia on Monday Night Football.

            New coaches, new schemes

Eight teams have a new head coach, 13 have a new offensive coordinator and a dozen squads welcome a new defensive coordinator. Paying attention to how these teams adapt to their new coaches can pay off when Week 1 rolls around.

“When new OCs and DCs are brought in, it's usually because of either a new head coaching change or a change made out of necessity,” says pro capper Marc Lawrence. “They often times bring new playbooks, and as a result there is a new learning curve on each side of the ball.”

The most notable coaching swap was the Eagles’ hire of former Oregon skipper Chip Kelly, who brings his high-octane offense to the pros. Other teams and new hires under the microscope are the Cleveland Browns and new OC Norv Turner and Monte Kiffin calling the defensive shots in Dallas.

“This season there are a lot of interesting story lines involving new schemes for teams,” says Doc’s Sports. “Dallas is switching back to a 4-3 defense after nearly a decade in the 3-4. And not just any 4-3, but a Cover-2 scheme, which has seemingly fallen out of favor in recent seasons.”

Bettors should also make note of current NFL coaches on the hot seat and their demeanor heading into training camp. Covers Expert Bruce Marshall points the finger at Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, who is coming off a disappointing 4-12 SU and 6-10 ATS. Marshall says the fear of losing their job can motivate these coaches to pull out all the stops in the early season, and even press for victories in the preseason.

            Quarterback situations

There are plenty of QB controversies brewing after the first weekend of training camp.

Of course, the New York Jets’ highly-publicized battle between Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith has hogged the headlines this summer. But Buffalo, Philadelphia, Oakland and Jacksonville also have some tough calls to make under center.

“These are the teams where there's no true starter named yet,” says Covers Expert Will Rogers. “Whoever emerges will obviously have a significant impact on that team's respective season.”

Some cappers tab specific No. 1 quarterbacks and track their progress through training camp. Covers Experts’ Will Rogers has eyes for Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman and how hot his coaching staff is for him at the end of the summer.

“Rumor has it that the current coaching staff isn't in love with him, and why should they be given the way he finished last season?,” says Rogers. “They drafted Mike Glennon out of NC State as well, making matters more dicey.”

Lions at Argos: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              B.C. Lions at Toronto Argonauts (5.5, 49.5)

The Toronto Argonauts might be without some key pieces on offense when they host the BC Lions on Tuesday. Toronto, which dropped a 24-16 decision at BC in Week 2, lost CFL leading passer Ricky Ray and running back Chad Kackert to knee injuries last week in a road win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kackert, the leading rusher for the Argonauts, will miss at least a month while Ray is listed as day-to-day for the top team in the East Division.

Following a home-and-home sweep of the Edmonton Eskimos, the Lions have won three straight and have allowed just 40 points in that span after yielding 44 in their Week 1 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Running back Andrew Harris is driving the offense with 296 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to go with 129 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay is enjoying a strong start to the season - with 974 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and only three interceptions.

              TV:
              7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

              ABOUT THE LIONS (3-1):
Slotback Nick Moore appears to have taken the place of Geroy Simon in BC’s passing schemes. Moore, who had 449 receiving yards in his first two seasons, has caught 17 passes for 241 yards in 2013 - good for second on the team behind wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux. Lulay, who has 173 rushing yards on 19 carries, is on pace to surpass last year’s career high of 477 yards. First-year cornerback Cord Parks has a team-leading two interceptions and shares the club's top honours with 19 tackles. Linebacker Adam Bighill, who has missed two games due to an ankle injury, participated in drills with the starting defensive unit at practice on Friday.

              ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (2-2):
Toronto signed running back Chris Jennings to replace the injured Kackert. Jennings was released by the Montreal Alouettes last week after rushing for 29 yards on eight carries in one game. The Argonauts released veteran linebacker Brandon Isaac, leaving their defense under the leadership of linebacker Robert McCune (team-leading 27 tackles) and defensive end Jonathan Williams (team-leading two sacks). Slotback Chad Owens is tied with Montreal running back Noel Devine for the league lead with 802 total combined yards.

              TRENDS:

              * Lions are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
              * The over is 6-0 in Argonauts last six home games.
              * The Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
              * Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in Toronto.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. Toronto is 0-2 against West Division opponents.

              2. The Lions have scored 73 of their 104 points in the second half.

              3. Argonauts backup QB Zach Collaros, who will likely start if Ray is sidelined, has completed 7-of-10 passes for 112 yards in spot duty this season. He also has 24 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

                          Tuesday, July 30

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 4: Division long shots worth a wager
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MLB post-break schedule is well underway. Teams are turning the corner with the playoff push on the horizon.

These four clubs, who currently sit back of their division leaders, are starting to pick up steam and could provide solid value to win their division crown if you grab their futures odds now.

Washington Nationals (+800 to win NL East)

The Nationals failed to meet expectations in the first half of the season and find themselves 8.5 games back of the Braves in the NL East. Washington took three of four versus the Mets and has a five-game road trip to Detroit and Milwaukee this week. The Nats pitching staff is among the best in the majors and if the bats can catch up, they could put together a strong push in the final two months of the schedule.

Kansas City Royals (+5,000 to win the AL Central)

At first glance, rolling the dice on the Royals would seem like throwing your money down the tubes. And maybe at second and third glance, as well. But Kansas City is one of the hottest clubs in the majors right now, winning six straight heading into Tuesday, and is only seven back of the Tigers in the AL Central. The Royals can trim that lead with some cupcakes on sked – playing six of their next nine games against the Twins. The other three games are versus the Mets.

Baltimore Orioles (+700 to win AL East)

A quick look at the latest MLB futures might cause you to scrunch up your face when you get the Orioles. Baltimore is among the top contenders to win the World Series, priced at +1,200 – just behind the AL East-leading Red Sox (+1,000). The O’s dropped two of three to Boston this weekend but have smooth sailing into mid August, with upcoming series against the Astros, Mariners, Padres, and Giants. Baltimore can turn it on late, going 37-18 in August and September last season.

Colorado Rockies (+2,500 to win NL West)

The National League West is a frickin’ gong show. The Dodgers, who were once the worst bet in baseball, are on fire at the top of the division and the defending World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, are 7-16 this month. Who’s to say the Rockies couldn’t once again put together a late-season run? Colorado is only six games out of the NL West lead and closes the sked with a three-game set at Dodgers Stadium. Could that be a division-deciding series in late September?
