Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) OK, I go on vacation for 12 days and most of the Papa John's pizza places in Albany go out of business; whats up with that? This is bad news; Papa John's is the best pizza I've ever had. Seriously, I'm not happy.

    12) Hunter Mahan led the Canadian Open by two shots after the second round, but when his wife went into labor Saturday (three weeks early) with the couple's first child, Mahan bolted Canada and headed home to Texas.

When you've already made $24,062,590 in your career, its easier to put first things first and skip out on a potentially big paycheck. Hope the baby and mom are both very healthy.

    11) Ravens' QB Joe Flacco completed 56 third down passes LY; 27 of the 56 went to either Anquan Boldin or Dennis Pitta. Boldin plays for the 49ers now; Pitta dislocated his hip Saturday and is out for the year.

    10) Bad news for the Eagles; Jeremy Maclin tore his right ACL, is also out for the year. I said this last year, before I knew who the new coach was going to be: Eagle fans are going to miss Andy Reid. A lot.

    9) Ohio State lost its entire front seven from LY's team, so I'll be curious to see how they stop the run and rush the passer early this season. Now you know the Buckeyes will have talented players, but such a young defense is going to have issues, if they're playing quality opponents.

    8) Minnesota Twins have a big-time prospect in 3B Miguel Sano, but he's been benched for four straight games, after it took him 29 seconds to get around the bases after hitting a home run Tuesday; when the team's skipper confronted him about hot dogging on his HR trot, Sano apparently told him he'd do whatever he wanted after hitting a home run.

Hard to hit a homer when you're sitting on the bench.

    7) Only eight states have a shot clock in high school basketball; thank the Lord, New York is one of them. Basketball without a shot clock has the potential to be tedious, if the coaches are control freaks.

    6) Good news in Indiana: Butler-Purdue-Indiana-Notre Dame will keep playing a doubleheader every December in the Hoosier State. We need more of these quality games in the pre-conference period. Now that Butler is in the Big East, they're on a par status-wise with these other schools.

    5) Albert Pujols went home to get his foot checked after he re-injured the foot this weekend in Oakland; it was fairly obvious that Pujols is probably headed for a stint on the DL.

    4) Chris Sale pitched in the All-Star Game, but has only one win in his last 10 starts; White Sox scored 22 runs in those ten games, getting shut out in three of Sale's last five starts.

    3) When teams fail, there is usually a scapegoat who gets fired, even though the failure isn't (all) their fault. Washington Nationals fired hitting coach Rick Eckstein this week; seeing as they scored six runs in their last three games with Eckstein gone, guess it wasn't all his fault.

    2) Only 34 of 62 living Hall of Famers are in Cooperstown this weekend for the induction ceremony of.........no one. How about righting a wrong and put Pete Rose where he belongs, in the Hall of Fame?

Write what you want about him on his plaque, but dammit, he deserves to be inducted. A great player, he never cheated the game, not for one second.

    1) There were four 1-0 baseball games Saturday, the first that happened since September 2, 2001. Lack of power, lack of speed makes for less offense in the game. There was a 2-0 game in Atlanta, too.

NASCAR betting: Crown Royal 400 at The Brickyard preview

NASCAR salutes its fan with this weekend’s Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at The Brickyard, named for Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Deeds, who won Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” contest.

We take a look at the NASCAR odds and where bettors can find value at the Brickyard.

      Favorite: Jimmie Johnson (+350)

The Sprint Cup points leader is running away with the 2013 season, 56 points ahead of his closest competition. Johnson has four career wins at Indy, including last year’s Crown Royal 400, and an average finish of 16.8. He’s best first in three of his last five visits to the Brickyard, placing 19th and 22nd in 2011 and 2010.

      Live dog: Tony Stewart (+1,500)

Stewart has plenty of experience on the bricks, having run both stock and IndyCar at the 2.5-mile oval. “Smoke” owns the best average finish at Indianapolis at 8.2 over his 14 starts in his home state, posting two wins and six Top-5 finishes in that span. This season, Stewart sits 13th in the points standings and followed a runner-up showing at Daytona with a 26th-place run at New Hampshire two weeks ago.

      Long shot: Jamie McMurray (+3,300)

McMurray is picking up steam with a second-place run at Kentucky and a seventh-place showing at Daytona. He salvaged a 12th-place finish at New Hampshire despite crashing his car in practice. The No. 1 car has had success at Indianapolis, with an average finish of 14.0 and five Top-10 runs in 10 career starts, including a win in 2010.

Key stat: The Indianapolis winner has started from the pole position just twice: Kevin Harvick in 2003 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008.

      Notable quotable:

“I just feel like I’ve had a lot of different experiences here that can help me and, again, it’s just a special place where I feel like from the beginning I’ve always really believed that you have to show this track respect, and it will hopefully show you the respect back.” – Danica Patrick told NBC Sports about her experience racing IndyCar at the Brickyard.

Odds to win Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at The Brickyard

      Jimmie Johnson 7-2
      Kyle Busch 35-4
      Kasey Kahne 10-1
      Matt Kenseth 11-1
      Carl Edwards 13-1
      Greg Biffle 13-1
      Denny Hamlin 13-1
      Jeff Gordon 13-1
      Brad Keselowski 15-1
      Tony Stewart 15-1
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 35-2
      Clint Bowyer 18-1
      Juan Montoya 20-1
      Kurt Busch 20-1
      Kevin Harvick 20-1
      Martin Truex Jr. 45-2
      Mark Martin 28-1
      Joey Logano 28-1
      Jamie McMurray 33-1

Most popular NFL prop bets of the offseason

One of the best ways to scratch that football itch in the offseason is betting on the long list of available NFL props.

From the top QBs to which WRs and RBs will rack up the most yards, football fans can wager on just about anything and anyone in the NFL. We talked to sportsbooks to see which props and players are drawing the most action as NFL training camps kick off:

Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos – Total Passing Yards (Under 4,750.5)

Even with the addition of Wes Welker and another camp to fine tune timing with the receivers, prop bettors expect Manning to throw for less than 4,750.5 yards in 2013. Last year, in his first season with the Broncos, Peyton posted 4,659 passing yards.

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys – Total Passing Yards (Under 4,725.5)

There was a coup in Arlington this offseason, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ripping the playbook out of head coach Jason Garrett’s hands and leaving the offense to Bill Callahan. That could lead to less deep looks for Romo and a more balanced attack. Dallas is even utilizing a pistol offense in camp this summer.

Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks – Total Rushing Yards (Under 1,475.5)

With Russell Wilson’s expanded role in the offense after such a great rookie campaign, prop bettors are expecting a swing in the offense. Seattle added speedster Percy Harvin and the ground game could suffer. Lynch rushed for 1,590 yards, so oddsmakers are already adjusting for a demotion.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings – Total Rushing Yards (Over 1,750)

So what is “All Day” going to do for an encore? After flirting with the single-season rushing record, Peterson isn’t expected to get close to the 2,097 yards he rumbled for last year. But bettors believe he’ll at least get more than 1,750, with 82 percent of this prop’s action leaning over.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers – Most TD Passes

Rodgers connected for 39 TD passes in 2012 and had 45 throws find pay dirt in 2011. He’s involved in as many as eight QB-versus-QB matchups for most TD passes and is drawing the major of action in most of those props. Rodgers is a 3.5-TD fave over Tom Brady, a 1.5-TD fave vs. Drew Brees and a 7.5-TD fave against Eli Manning.

E.J. Manuel, Buffalo Bills – NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Action on the former FSU star has move Manuel from +1,200 to +600 to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2013. Buffalo has a QB battle on its hands with Manuel trying to win the No. 1 gig over Kevin Kolb. Rams rookie WR Tavon Austin is the RoY fave at +300.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Braves
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves

                    MILLER MAKES A CASE

Shelby Miller is 10-6 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.09 WHIP this season for the Cardinals. The righty is making his first career start against the Braves. He has had some problems on the road giving up 2 runs or more in five straight starts away from St. Louis. Miller has exhibited awesome control for the most part outside of a 5-walk game back on July 10th against the Astros. The Cardinals’ starter has won five of his last eight starts.

WHERE IS LAST YEAR'S KRIS MEDLEN

Kris Medlen is 6-10 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.38 WHIP for the Braves. The righty lost only one game in 12 starts last season, but he just hasn’t had the same success this season. He has allowed 12 home runs in 119 innings of work after giving up only 6 home runs all of last year. The righty has allowed 3 runs or more in seven straight starts, including 15 runs in his last three outings. Medlen has not been able to go too deep for the Braves; he has pitched into the 6th inning just four times in his last ten outings overall. The Cardinals beat Medlen last October when he allowed 5 runs and three hits in just over six innings of work.

                    INJURY REPORT

The Cardinals’ injury list is short, but they have a few important names on there. Matt Holliday is returned to play on Saturday which reduces the list by one. Jason Motte, Rafael Furcal, Jaime Garcia and Chris Carpenter are all out with shoulder or elbow ailments. Motte and Furcal underwent Tommy John surgery.

The Braves are dealing with the gruesome season-ending injury to Tim Hudson who recently broke his ankle against the Mets. Atlanta is hoping to get Brandon Beachy back soon. The Braves are also expecting the return of BJ Upton who is out with a groin injury. Atlanta is also without Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters because of Tommy John surgery.

                    TRENDS

Cardinals are 10-4 in Miller’s last 14 starts
Cardinals are 6-2 Under in Miller’s last 8 road starts

Braves are 18-6 in Medlen’s last 24 home starts
Braves are 3-1-1 Over in their last 5 Sunday games

                    HITTERS TO WATCH

No Braves have faced Shelby Miller

                    Carlos Beltran 0-for-6 vs. Medlen
                    Yadier Molina 1-for-4 vs. Medlen
