    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Indians blew a 7-1 lead, but Raburn homered in 11th to give them an 11-8 win over Texas, Rangers' 10th loss in their last 13 games.

-- TCU's top basketball recruit Karviar Shepherd has been ruled eligible, excellent news for Trent Johnson, who has an uphill battle in the Big X.

-- Stanford senior Andy Brown's hoop career is over after he tore his ACL for 4th time (1st time for right ACL). Tough break for the kid.

-- SMU alum Bo Levi Mitchell was 29-33 for 376 passing yards and three TDs in his first start as the Calgary Stampeders won 37-24 at Winnipeg.

-- 26-year old Preston Mattingly (his son) washed out of a baseball career, will now play college hoop at Lamar for Pat Knight (his son).

-- Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez gets $48M for six years from the Phillies; he is said to be big-league ready right now.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) If you don’t think NFL schedule makers amuse themselves when they draw up their schedule every year, think again; Tampa Bay Bucs are coached by former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, who is in his second year with the Bucs. Tampa Bay’s first road game LY was against the Giants in Swamp Stadium; their opener this year is against the Jets in the Swamp. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

    12) Cubs saved $6.8M by trading Alfonso Soriano and his 37-year old knees to the Bronx Friday; the kid they got for Soriano is no prospect- he is 4-8, 4.25 in Class A Florida State League, with 45 walks in 82.2 IP. Oy.

    11) There are 21 players in the American League making $15M+ this season; nine of the 21 now play home games in the Bronx.

    10) A’s catcher John Jaso got drilled in mask by three foul tips in his last four games, is now on the 7-day concussion DL; imagine how many times concussions have been ignored in catchers over the years? Umpires, too.

    9) Turner Field put a Waffle House in; wish they would put one here in upstate NY; odds are it is better than Denny’s, which dominates late night eating where I live.

    8) Tommy Tuberville Jr, son of U of Cincinnati's football coach, will be a walk-on QB at Auburn this fall, where his dad used to work. Wonder if the kid is any good; if he was real good, he’d be playing for the Bearcats.

    7) Once Bills/Colts report to training camp Saturday, then all 32 teams will be training camp for the season opener in September. Preseason games start next weekend.

    6) Redskins’ OC Kyle Shanahan told ESPN.com that he thought the read-option offense helped reduce blitzing by defenses last year. Curious (and doubtful) to see if it has the same effect this season.

    5) For the first time in over a decade, Nets-Knicks aren’t playing each other in exhibition season this fall. Not sure why.

    4) Former Gonzaga star Adam Morrison is back in Spokane after a short and unproducitve NBA career, and will be a student assistant coach for the Bulldogs this winter. Pretty good practice player right there.

    3) When is Mayor Bloomberg going to ban electronic cigarettes in the Big Apple? If 20-ounce Cokes are so bad for mankind, smoking of any kind has to be right there, too, no?

    2) UCLA/USC both have new basketball coaches. Steve Alford is one of the most famous college players ever; Andy Enfield played at freakin’ Johns Hopkins; five months ago, no one could pick him out of a lineup, but he is obviously very sharp. Interesting battles those two will have over the next decade, both on the court and recruiting-- lot of good young talent coming up thru the high school ranks on the west coast.

    1) Looks like Pittsburgh closer Jason Grilli has a flexor strain and will miss around six weeks; time to go out and get Papelbon, front office-- make those sellouts from earlier this summer pay off now!!!! Try to win!!!!

AFC's most important players: NFL betting breakdown

Not one player makes a team, especially in football. However, there are some clubs out there that would begin to crumble if one key cog was ripped from the clockwork.

NFL.com columnist Adam Schein highlighted these talents in his recent lists of the NFL’s “Most Important Players” for the 2013 season – revealing not just the best or most valuable guys on the roster but “identifying the guy who needs to achieve - and overachieve -- for the team to reach its potential.”

While these players are indispensable to their teams, oddsmakers and most football bettors don’t quite feel the same. We asked sportsbooks and some of the sharpest NFL handicappers in the country to set estimated point values for each of Schein’s selections, according to their impact on the pointspread if they were to sit out game.

Here are the “Most Important Players” in the AFC and their estimated value to the pointspread:

      Elvis Dumervil, LB Baltimore Ravens

      Point value: 0.5-1 point

Why so valuable: Baltimore is hoping Dumervil can spark a defense that lost its heart and soul, Ray Lewis, to retirement.

      Mario Williams, DE Buffalo Bills

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Schein points to the hiring of new head coach Doug Marrone and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, saying those two could spark the great potential in Williams.

      Andy Dalton, QB Cincinnati Bengals

      Point value: 2-6 points

Why so valuable: Schein believes Cincinnati could be a contender and just as easy miss the playoffs. It all depends on Dalton and his maturity and poise in the competitive AFC North.

      Joe Haden, CB Cleveland Browns

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: On a team lacking talent, Haden is one of the lone bright spots – despite his troubles – and will keep opponents honest when picking on the Browns weak stop unit.

      Montee Ball, RB Denver Broncos

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: The Broncos need a ying to Peyton Manning’s yang and the rookie out of Wisconsin could become a force in first year.

      Andre Johnson, WR Houston Texans

      Point value: 1-2.5 points

Why so valuable: The Texans are in the Super Bowl hunt but losing Johnson would expose their lack of depth at receiver. Without him making plays, defenses can tee off on Arian Foster and the running game.

      Antoine Bethea, FS Indianapolis Colts

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: The love affair with Andrew Luck overshadows just how important Bethea is to the Colts success. Schein sees big things from him in during his second year in Chuck Pagano’s defense.

      Maurice Jones-Drew, RB Jacksonville Jaguars

      Point value: 2-3 points

Why so valuable: Needs no real explanation. If he’s healthy and motivated, bettors may be able to stomach the Jaguars.

Eric Fisher, OT Kansas City Chiefs

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: The Chiefs drafted the rookie lineman No. 1 overall to protect their big offseason addition, Alex Smith, and pave the way for RB Jamaal Charles. They need Fisher to adapt to the pro game quick.

      Lamar Miller, RB Miami Dolphins

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Reggie Bush is gone, so keeping the heat off QB Ryan Tannehill and giving the Miami attack any balance falls on Miller.

Chandler Jones, DE New England Patriots

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Schein says injuries stopped the Patriots from seeing just how good Jones could be in his rookie season. New England will score but it needs to hold its own on defense to stay among the contenders.

Santonio Holmes, WR New York Jets

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Whether it’s Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith throwing the passes, Holmes will be on the receiving end of most of them. “If on his A-game, two to 2.5 (points) in that offense,” says Aron Black of Bet365.com.

      Darren McFadden, RB Oakland Raiders

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Schein says McFadden’s health could be the difference for the Raiders, giving them a true game changer. Black says McFadden could be worth as much as 2.5 points if he returns to form.

      Troy Polamalu, SS Pittsburgh Steelers

      Point value: 1-2 points

Why so valuable: Polamalu has lost a step but is still being counted on to pick up the slack for Pittsburgh defense. “I might have stretched it giving him as much credit as I did in these ratings,” says Covers Expert Bruce Marshall.

Philip Rivers, QB San Diego Chargers

      Point value: 4-5 points

Why so valuable: Schein points to the laundry list of injuries around Rivers and the coaching change for his downfall over the past two seasons. This could be a make-or-break year for him in San Diego.

      Andy Levitre, OG Tennessee Titans

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Levitre’s work on the o-line is vital to RB Chris Johnson getting back to 2,000-yard rushing seasons.

Roughriders at Ti-Cats: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+3.5, 55.5)

Quarterback Darian Durant and the Saskatchewan Roughriders put on their most dominant performance of the season in a 37-0 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at home last week. The Roughriders travel to Guelph, Ont., on Saturday looking to keep their perfect start alive in a rematch against Hamilton. Durant, who was named Offensive Player of the Week, threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns, while Saskatchewan’s defense registered five sacks as the Roughriders showed no signs of slowing down.

Hamilton can find some positives from last week, most notably its ability to contain the Roughriders' offense early in the contest. Saskatchewan did not score a point in the first quarter and the Tiger-Cats run defense limited Roughriders running back Kory Sheets to 36 yards in the first half. Quarterback Henry Burris had his worst start of the season, however, and Hamilton’s league-worst running game was held to 16 total rushing yards, something coach Kent Austin will have to address if he wants to avoid another blanking.

        TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (4-0): Sheets rushed for 130 yards last week, bringing his season total to a league-leading 572. Wide receiver Rob Bagg continued his comeback from a devastating injury two seasons ago with two touchdown catches and 125 receiving yards last week to earn Canadian Player of the Week honours. Linebacker Renauld Williams, who was released by Hamilton after last season, was named Defensive Player of the Week and is leading Saskatchewan’s defense with five sacks and one interception, which he returned 19 yards for a touchdown.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-3): Despite his poor showing last week, Burris is second in the league with 1,115 passing yards, while also leading Hamilton with 123 rushing yards. Wide receivers Bakari Grant (254 yards) and Greg Ellingson (237) are Burris’ preferred targets. The Tiger-Cats have allowed a league-worst 126 points as only four defensive players have 10 or more tackles and the secondary has yet to intercept a pass, leading Hamilton to release linebacker Markeith Knowlton and defensive back James Patrick and sign linebacker Brandon Isaac, who was recently released by Toronto.

        TRENDS:

        * Roughriders are 20-6-1 ATS in their last 27 meetings.
        * The over is 10-3-1 in the last 14 meetings in Hamilton.
        * The Tiger-Cats are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.
        * Over is 4-1 in the Roughriders' last five games overall.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. The Roughriders are first in the CFL Power Rankings, while Hamilton is last.

        2. The Tiger-Cats are 0-2 against West Division opponents.

        3. Austin, who was quarterback for Saskatchewan when the Roughriders won the Grey Cup in 1989 and coach when they won it in 2007, spent five years coaching in the NCAA before returning to the CFL to lead the Tiger-Cats.
