    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Utah/Hawai'i are only two states that don't allow any type of gambling.

-- George Brett resigned as Royals hitting coach; they were 21-29 when he became the interim hitting coach- they were 26-22 with him in the dugout.

-- Joey Chestnut downed 179 chicken wings in ten minutes to win at the Hooters competitive eating contest. God help his arteries.

-- 49ers' CB Tarell Brown fired his agent after learning he blew $2M by not going to offseason workouts. Whoops.

-- Lot of Percy Harvin Seahawk jerseys at Champs in Las Vegas, but the Seattle WR has a hip injury and may not be able to play this season.

-- Enjoy watching college football media days on TV, both on ESPN and Big Dozen Network; you get to see the coaches' personalities come out.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

    13) NBA salary cap for next year is $58,679,000; tax threshold is $76,748,000. Brooklyn Nets already have $101,263,102 committed in salary for next year- that’s going to be one expensive tax bill.

    12) NBA players with six or less years of experience aren’t allowed to make more than $13,701,250 a year. Most of us could probably get by on that.

    11) Florida Gators took away the brick outside their football stadium with Aaron Hernandez’ name on it; to me, this isn’t right, the brick should always be there. He apparently committed some heinous crimes in his adult life, but he helped Florida win a lot of games (and make a ton of money) and the school shouldn’t pretend he never went there- his name should stand as a cautionary tale to kids on how they should live their life the right way.

    10) Speaking of Florida, Urban Meyer is obviously a tremendous coach, but good Lord, does the guy ever smile? Ever? Even on ESPN last year, Meyer was incredibly humorless; most guys lighten up when they get on TV. Meyer would make a superior mortician.

    9) Our thoughts/prayers to Mariners’ skipper Eric Wedge, who suffered a slight stroke earlier this week. Running a ballclub is a stressful job; we hope he makes a full recovery.

    8) Former President George HW (41) Bush shaved his head to show support for a 2-year old who is fighting leukemia; the little boy is the son of someone on the president’s security detail. The more you read about Mr Bush, all he did before becoming President, the more impressive he seems. I’m not talking about his politics, just his service to our country.

    7) St Louis Cardinals are hitting .340 this season with runners in scoring position; is that astounding figure sustainable? Its 51 points higher than any other big league team. Curious to see if the Redbirds add a shortstop at the trading deadline.

    6) Purdue’s defensive line depth takes a hit with senior DT Brandon Taylor being ruled academically ineligible; Boilermakers need all the good players they can get. Taylor isn't a star, but he would've helped.

    5) Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival is closer to Thanksgiving than Christmas (December 7), with St John’s/Fordham and LaSalle/Stony Brook the matchups. Would rather see Iona in there than Stony Brook, but then again, no one asked me what I think.

    4) Turns out Miami Marlins’ OF Marcell Ozuna broke his thumb/tore ligaments, so he’ll be having an operation and his season is over, once again proving that getting married can mess things up.......(kidding).

    3) Inevitable reality show: Tattoo Nightmares on Spike, about guys who deal with people’s tattoos when they aren’t happy with them. Lot of pain involved in the filming of that show.

    2) Phil Mickelson uses Callaway golf equipment; earlier this week, he showed up unexpectedly at Callaway headquarters and he brought the Claret Jug with him, so all the employees could hold it, since they all played a small role in his winning the British Open. Classy stuff.

    1) About ten years ago, the last week in July for me meant being in Orlando watching high school kids play basketball in front of Division I coaches for 10-12 hours a day- those times were great fun, though I always came back to my day job needing another vacation. Have to do that again one of these years, maybe in Las Vegas next summer.

NFC's most important players: NFL betting breakdown

One player does not make a team, especially in football. However, there are some clubs out there that simply wouldn't be as good if one key cog was ripped from the clockwork.

NFL.com columnist Adam Schein highlighted these talents in his recent lists of the NFL’s “Most Important Players” for the 2013 season – revealing not just the best or most valuable guys on the roster but “identifying the guy who needs to achieve - and overachieve -- for the team to reach its potential.”

While these players are indispensable to their teams, oddsmakers and most football bettors don’t quite feel the same. We asked sportsbooks and some of the sharpest NFL handicappers in the country to set estimated point values for each of Schein’s selections according to their impact on the pointspread if they were to sit out game. Bettors could find some hidden value if one of these "MIPs" misses time during the upcoming 2013 NFL season.

Here are the “Most Important Players” in the NFC and their estimated value to the pointspread:

      Larry Fitzgerald, WR Arizona Cardinals

      Point value: 2-3 points

Why so valuable: Weapons are few and far between in the desert and the Cardinals’ best chance of finding paydirt begins and ends with Fitzgerald.

      Steven Jackson, RB Atlanta Falcons

      Point value: 0.5–2.5 points

Why so valuable: Schein says Jackson could be the best offseason addition and gives Atlanta a closer in the fourth quarter. Oddsmakers and cappers did differ on his value to the spread though.

      Luke Kuechly, LB Carolina Panthers

      Point value: 0.5-2 points

Why so valuable: The Defensive Rookie of the Year is already the backbone of the Panthers defense, a stop unit that needs to improve if it is going to compete in the NFC South.

      Jay Cutler, QB Chicago Bears

      Point value: 3-6 points

Why so valuable: Everything is riding on Cutler this season. The Bears offense doesn’t work without him, even more so now that new head coach Marc Trestman is calling the plays.

      Tony Romo, QB Dallas Cowboys

      Point value: 3.5-6 points

Why so important: Every minute up until his ill-timed blunders, Romo’s been among the best passers in the league. Schein says without Romo, the Cowboys would have won only six games.

      Ndamukong Suh, DT Detroit Lions

      Point value: 0.5-2.5 points

Why so valuable: If Suh plays to his potential, the Lions could have one of the nastiest defenses in the NFL. Aron Black, of Bet365.com estimated Suh’s value as high as 2.5 points “if playing with his head on straight, which is a big question mark.”

B.J. Raji, DT Green Bay Packers

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Raji was slowed by injuries in 2012 and the defense crumbled around him. If Green Bay is going back to the Super Bowl, the stop unit has to be better.

      Greg Jennings, WR Minnesota Vikings

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Jennings replaces Percy Harvin as the Vikings’ No. 1 passing threat but Minnesota has the same problem: keeping its top receiver healthy. Jennings needs to be threat down field to keep the heat off RB Adrian Peterson.

Will Smith, LB New Orleans Saints

      Point value: 0-1 point

Why so valuable: The Saints switch to the 3-4 and Smith goes from DE to LB. A quick and easy transition will pave the way for the defense.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE New York Giants

      Point value: 1-2 points

Why so valuable: New York bettors could really see JPP’s true value if he’s not recovered from offseason back surgery. His presence in the pass rush can bail out a shaky secondary.

      Jason Peters, LT Philadelphia Eagles

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Peter’s absence was felt on the offensive line and in order for Chip Kelly’s new offense to gain traction, they need their LT on the field.

Vernon Davis, TE San Francisco 49ers

      Point value: 1-2 points

Why so valuable: Without Michael Crabtree, Davis will take on more of the receiving load on top of being Colin Kaepernick’s safety net.

      Percy Harvin, WR Seattle Seahawks

      Point value: 0.5-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Not only does Harvin give Russell Wilson a deep threat but the troublesome speedster stretches defenses and opens it up for Marshawn Lynch to go beast mode.

James Laurinaitis, LB St. Louis Rams

      Point value: 0-2 points

Why so valuable: The Rams defense ranked in the middle of the road, allowing 21.8 points per game in 2012. The Road Warrior’s son is the best chance of improving in the competitive NFC West.

Darrelle Revis, CB Tampa Bay Buccaneers

      Point value: 1-2.5 points

Why so valuable: Revis is “the” shutdown corner in the NFL when 100 percent but most are holding their breath after he missed 2012 with a knee injury. “If he stays healthy and performs, he’s in the ‘best in league’ argument at the position,” says Black.

      Brian Orakpo, LB Washington Redskins

      Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: The Skins defense took a slide after Orakpo went down in Week 2. While D.C. is all about RG3, Washington needs to be able to stop somebody if they want another playoff appearance.

NFL Games of the Year: RG3's knee will move Skins-Lions odds

Odds are out for the biggest and best games of the upcoming NFL season. Covers Experts’ Doc’s Sports gives you insight into some of these marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

        NFL Week 3:
Detroit Lions at Washington Redskins (-2.5)

        Past history:
The teams are 3-3 SU and ATS in regular season meetings since 2000, though the Lions have won and covered the last two. The O/U is 1-4-1.

        Early look at the Lions:
Are the Lions the team that won 10 games (8-6-2 ATS) in 2011 and looked ready to sit at the adult’s table? Or are they the losers who lost their last eight to limp to a 4-12 record last year? They have the talent for the former, but that obviously isn’t always enough. The season win total of 7.5 shows oddsmakers aren’t clear, either.

        Early look at the Redskins:
Robert Griffin III’s knee is the most important joint in the NFL. If he comes back healthy and ready to grow on a stellar rookie year then the team is a threat. His struggles are the team’s struggles, though. The Skins' win total sits at eight and the over is heavily favored, so the public is drinking the Kool-Aid.

        Where this line will move:
Washington opens with brutal games at home against the Eagles, then at Green Bay. If there is a Griffin-fueled win or two in that group, or even a good collection of highlight reel heroics, then the public will push this line over the key number of three. If they struggle, though, it will stay put where it is.

          Week 5

Calgary (3-1) @ Winnipeg (1-3)-- Bombers allowed 38-35 points in losing both their home games this year, by 5-16 points; they're already -9 in turnovers, coughing ball up 12 times in four games. Stampeders won last seven series games, winning last three visits here by 3-1-11 points, with four of last five visits here going over total; Stamps split their two road games, scoring 21-22 points (they're scoring 41 ppg at home). Calgary has injury issues at QB; SMU alum Mitchell was third Stamp QB to play last week, as they won 38-27 after trailing 24-0 in first quarter. Road team covered all four Winnipeg games this year.

Saskatchewan (4-0) @ Hamilton (1-3)-- Roughriders (-7.5) crushed Hamilton 37-0 in last week's game at Taylor Field, Riders' 16th win in last 19 series games; they're 7-2 in last nine visits here (Hamilton, not Guelph), dogs covered four of last six series games, with five of last seven at Hamilton going over total. Riders are 4-0 this year, with all four wins by 11+ points; they're +7 in turnovers, +10 in sacks and run balll for 155.5 ypg. TiCats allowed 30+ points in all three losses; they're got only two takeaways in four games (-3)- Burris has already been sacked 16 times. In the NFL, this would be a trap game.

BC Lions (3-1) @ Toronto (2-2)-- Knee injury to Argo QB Ray has this game off board; even with Ray, Toronto (+7) lost 24-16 in Week 2 at BC Place, as Lions outrushed Argos 160-34, outgained them 417-249 (led 14-3 at half). BC has beaten Toronto six games in a row and 16 of last 17, winning seven of last eight visits here, last two 29-16/18-9. Six of last eight series games stayed under total, eight of last nine played here. Toronto scored 39-35 points in its two wins, 16-28 in its losses; Lions allowed average of 13.3 ppg last three weeks, in wins by 8-14-10 points. CFL home dogs are 1-3 vs spread this year.

Stampeders at Blue Bombers: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5, 48.5)

The Calgary Stampeders emerged from their record-setting comeback against the Montreal Alouettes with their third-string quarterback at the helm. Bo Levi Mitchell may see his first career CFL start when the Stampeders visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday. Starting quarterback Drew Tate suffered an injury to his throwing arm in Week 2 and backup Kevin Glenn left last week’s game in the third quarter with an injury - also to his throwing arm - leaving Mitchell to toss two touchdown passes and seal the 38-27 victory.

Winnipeg also has issues with the health of its quarterback as Buck Pierce is questionable to start this week after being hit hard in the abdomen during a 35-19 loss to the Toronto Argonauts. Pierce, who has thrown five interceptions and two touchdowns, will likely be replaced by backup Justin Goltz, who completed 13-of-15 passes for 170 yards in the second half against Toronto. The Blue Bombers would not elaborate on the severity of Pierce’s injury, which adds more uncertainty to an offense that has not scored more than 20 points in a game since Week 1.

          TV:
          8 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (3-1, 3-1 ATS):
Running back Jon Cornish had 109 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries against the Alouettes and is second in the league with 413 rushing yards, behind Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Kory Sheets. No other player has more than 300. Cornish, who led the league with 1,457 rushing yards last year, was limited to 42 yards against the Roughriders in Week 2 - the only time he has been held to fewer than 100 combined yards this season. Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes leads Calgary with four sacks but missed last week’s game because of a wrist injury.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-3, 2-2 ATS):
Pierce is one of many players questionable to play Friday. Wide receiver Chris Matthews and defensive tackles Bryant Turner and JT Gilmore are all suffering from various ailments. Defensive end Alex Hall has six of Winnipeg’s 19 sacks, including the only one against Toronto. Linebacker Henoc Muamba leads the team with 22 tackles and added a sack, but the potential loss of Turner could leave a big hole that the third-year tackle - who is second on the team with three sacks - would need to fill. Running back Chad Simpson was limited to 50 rushing yards last week and is fourth in the league with 256 through four games.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Winnipeg.
          * Stampeders are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
          * Stampeders are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine games overall.
          * Blue Bombers are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

          EXTRA POINTS:

          1. The Stampeders are second in the CFL Power Rankings (behind Saskatchewan) following their home-and-home sweep of the Alouettes. The Blue Bombers are seventh.

          2. Winnipeg is the only East Division team not to face a West Division opponent yet.

          3. Calgary K Rene Paredes still has a shot at reaching the CFL record for 30 straight made field goals after officials decided that last week’s blocked kick happened behind the line of scrimmage, ruling it a fumble instead of a missed kick. Paredes, named Special Teams Player of the Week, has made 29 consecutive field goals.

CFL betting: Fade material in home dogs
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Canadian Football league enters Week 5 Thursday night with the Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes.

One trend that has jumped out is that of the home underdog.

Of the 16 games played thus far heading into the Week 5, the home dog is 0-4 ATS. Both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Eskimos are 0-2 ATS as home dogs.

The fifth week of the CFL calendar has a couple of opportunities to visit this trend. The Calgary Stampeders are in Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers Friday. Winnipeg is currently a 5-point home dog.

Also, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are 4-point home underdogs with the unbeaten Saskatchewan Roughriders in town Saturday evening.

The final matchup of the week, the BC Lions at Toronto Argonauts, is currently off the board.

Pittsburgh Pirates still top of the money standing
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to exert their dominance in our money rankings. The Bucs currently sit atop the league up +25.12 units so far in 2013.

The Pirates have not finished on the plus side of the money standings since the 2003 season when they finished a pedestrian +0.85 units. They flirted with finishing on the plus side of things the past couple of seasons but have been cellar dwellers most seasons in between.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Pirates by a score of 9-7 Thursday. Pittsburgh currently sports a 60-40 record following the loss and are 2.5 games behind the N.L. Central leading St. Louis Cardinals.

The Miami Marlins host the Pirates for a three-game weekend series which opens Friday. Jeff Locke (9-2, 2.11 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Pirates against Miami's Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 3.28)

Texas Rangers best 'under' play in baseball
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Texas Rangers continue to lead the MLB 'under' standings as they are now owners of a 36-60-6 o/u record.

Texas and the New York Yankees played under the 7.5 closing total Thursday afternoon after the Yanks clipped the Rangers by a score of 2-0.

The Rangers have gone over the total just once in their previous 12 games and are 1-9-2 o/u in that span.

Any $100 bettor would be up $733.65 if they had wagered the 'under' in each of the Rangers' last 12 games.

The Cleveland Indians host the Rangers for a three-game weekend series which opens Friday. Texas' Martin Perez is scheduled to get the start against Cleveland's Corey Kluber.

CFL faves cashing in at better than 70 percent

It's early in the Canadian Football League season, but favorites have an overwhelming edge so far in terms of betting.

The favorite has posted a record of 13-4 straight up (76.4 percent) after the Montreal Alouettes beat the Edmonton Eskimos Thursday night and covered as 4-point home faves 32-27. Favorites are also 12-5 against the spread.

Faves had a perfect 4-0 ATS opening week to the season and a spotless 4-0 ATS record in Week 4, making it five straight covers for the chalk heading into Friday's action.

Week 5 action continues Friday with Calgary as 5-point road faves against Winnipeg. Saturday sees the Riders travel to Ontario and face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Riders are currently 4-point road faves.

The week concludes Tuesday with the Toronto Argos hosting the B.C. Lions. This matchup is currently off the board with Argos starting QB Ricky Ray hobbling due to a knee injury.
