    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Last six winners of the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the best college quarterback of the season........

2007-- Tim Tebow, Florida-- Whatever happened to this guy?

2008-- Sam Bradford, Oklahoma-- Headed for breakout year in St Louis?

2009-- Colt McCoy, Texas-- Longhorns haven't been same since he left.

2010-- Cam Newton, Auburn-- Tigers won national title, then hit skids.

2011-- Robert Griffin III, Baylor-- Made Baylor football relevant again.

2012-- Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M-- Had a horrendous offseason.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

    13) Our thoughts are with Tim Hudson today; he broke his ankle last night, and at age 38, his career might be over. One of my all-time favorites from his Oakland days, he paved way for some shorter pitchers to make it in pro ball, when there had been a stigma against shorter hurlers.

    12) Jered Weaver's last two starts against the Twins: 17 IP, no runs, two hits. didn't hurt that Joe Mauer is on paternity leave, but still......

    11) Jordan Baker is a young umpire; he stands 6-8, and seems to call curve balls strikes more often that fastballs- thats my observation after seeing him work a couple games behind the plate. Since beginning of 2012, under is 26-9-1 when Baker works behind the plate.

    10) Every time I watch Evan Gattis hit for the Braves, I'm reminded of the old wrestler Ivan Putski- their arms are about the same size.

    9) Dodgers have now won 23 of their last 28 games- they scored 32 runs in their three-game conquest of Toronto this week.

    8) David Price's stats since coming off the DL: 41 IP, 32 baserunners, 8 runs, a big reason why Rays are on fire, having won 18 of their last 21 games.

    7) Marlins' OF Marcell Ozuna got married during the All-Star break; four days later, he gets sent down to AA;; if they thought he was doing so poorly, why didn't they give him a day or two off? It takes a big leap of faith to believe Marlin brass knows what they're doing.

    6) Nationals look like a dead team; Stephen Strasburg is 5-8, 2.85; guess they won't have to worry about how many innings he throws this year.

    5) CC Sabathia's last two starts: total of nine IP, with 15 of 19 runners he allowed scoring. He's logged a lot of innings; has it taken its inevitable toll?

    4) If baseball playoffs started Thursday morning, they would look like this:
NL: Braves-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Reds @ Pirates
AL: Red Sox-Tigers-A's. Wild Card: Orioles @ Rays.

    3) Dallas Mavericks gave rookie Ricky Ledo a 4-year contract, with two years and $1.3M+ guaranteed; kid never played at Providence, but he did practice with the Friars- he looked good in summer league this month.

    2) December 21 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, this doubleheader will be played and broadcast on ESPNU: Marquette-New Mexico, and Oklahoma St-Colorado. Lobo fans like coming to Las Vegas.

    1) If you're visiting Las Vegas and are looking for a place to stay, Elara Tower (owned by Hilton) behind Planet Hollywood is an excellent option. There is a **** near the hotel, a short walk from Planet Hollywood casino.

Lot of good food places, lot of shopping options. I highly recommend it.

NFL Games of the Year: Best meets worst in London, England

NFL Week 8: San Francisco 49ers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (+10.5) in London, England

Past history: This is just the fourth meeting between the teams since Jacksonville joined the league in 1995. The Jaguars are 2-1 SU, but just 1-2 ATS. All three games have gone under the total.

Early look at the 49ers: This is Colin Kaepernick’s squad from the outset this year and they have added weapons on both sides of the ball for him. Only the Broncos are given a better chance to win the Super Bowl than the Niners (+600).

Early look at the Jaguars: They have an owner with vision and bottomless pockets. That’s a good start. Now all they need is some talent outside of Maurice Jones-Drew. It’s a long painful road they are on. Their season win total of five is the lowest posted in the league, so they clearly have a long way left to go.

Where this line could move: Ownership is trying to make Jacksonville England’s team. It won’t be easy to make anyone love this squad. They have a real look at 0-7 heading into this one. If that happens - or even 2-5 or worse - the the line could grow. It’s unlikely to exceed two touchdowns, but 13.5 is certainly in play.

NFC's most important players: NFL betting breakdown

One player does not make a team, especially in football. However, there are some clubs out there that simply wouldn't be as good if one key cog was ripped from the clockwork.

NFL.com columnist Adam Schein highlighted these talents in his recent lists of the NFL’s “Most Important Players” for the 2013 season – revealing not just the best or most valuable guys on the roster but “identifying the guy who needs to achieve - and overachieve -- for the team to reach its potential.”

While these players are indispensable to their teams, oddsmakers and most football bettors don’t quite feel the same. We asked sportsbooks and some of the sharpest NFL handicappers in the country to set estimated point values for each of Schein’s selections according to their impact on the pointspread if they were to sit out game. Bettors could find some hidden value if one of these "MIPs" misses time during the upcoming 2013 NFL season.

Here are the “Most Important Players” in the NFC and their estimated value to the pointspread:

        Larry Fitzgerald, WR Arizona Cardinals
        Point value: 2-3 points

Why so valuable: Weapons are few and far between in the desert and the Cardinals’ best chance of finding paydirt begins and ends with Fitzgerald.

        Steven Jackson, RB Atlanta Falcons
        Point value: 0.5–2.5 points

Why so valuable: Schein says Jackson could be the best offseason addition and gives Atlanta a closer in the fourth quarter. Oddsmakers and cappers did differ on his value to the spread though.

        Luke Kuechly, LB Carolina Panthers
        Point value: 0.5-2 points

Why so valuable: The Defensive Rookie of the Year is already the backbone of the Panthers defense, a stop unit that needs to improve if it is going to compete in the NFC South.

        Jay Cutler, QB Chicago Bears
        Point value: 3-6 points

Why so valuable: Everything is riding on Cutler this season. The Bears offense doesn’t work without him, even more so now that new head coach Marc Trestman is calling the plays.

        Tony Romo, QB Dallas Cowboys
        Point value: 3.5-6 points

Why so important: Every minute up until his ill-timed blunders, Romo’s been among the best passers in the league. Schein says without Romo, the Cowboys would have won only six games.

        Ndamukong Suh, DT Detroit Lions
        Point value: 0.5-2.5 points

Why so valuable: If Suh plays to his potential, the Lions could have one of the nastiest defenses in the NFL. Aron Black, of Bet365.com estimated Suh’s value as high as 2.5 points “if playing with his head on straight, which is a big question mark.”

B.J. Raji, DT Green Bay Packers
        Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Raji was slowed by injuries in 2012 and the defense crumbled around him. If Green Bay is going back to the Super Bowl, the stop unit has to be better.

        Greg Jennings, WR Minnesota Vikings
        Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Jennings replaces Percy Harvin as the Vikings’ No. 1 passing threat but Minnesota has the same problem: keeping its top receiver healthy. Jennings needs to be threat down field to keep the heat off RB Adrian Peterson.

Will Smith, LB New Orleans Saints
        Point value: 0-1 point

Why so valuable: The Saints switch to the 3-4 and Smith goes from DE to LB. A quick and easy transition will pave the way for the defense.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE New York Giants
        Point value: 1-2 points

Why so valuable: New York bettors could really see JPP’s true value if he’s not recovered from offseason back surgery. His presence in the pass rush can bail out a shaky secondary.

        Jason Peters, LT Philadelphia Eagles
        Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Peter’s absence was felt on the offensive line and in order for Chip Kelly’s new offense to gain traction, they need their LT on the field.

Vernon Davis, TE San Francisco 49ers
        Point value: 1-2 points

Why so valuable: Without Michael Crabtree, Davis will take on more of the receiving load on top of being Colin Kaepernick’s safety net.

        Percy Harvin, WR Seattle Seahawks
        Point value: 0.5-1.5 points

Why so valuable: Not only does Harvin give Russell Wilson a deep threat but the troublesome speedster stretches defenses and opens it up for Marshawn Lynch to go beast mode.

James Laurinaitis, LB St. Louis Rams
        Point value: 0-2 points

Why so valuable: The Rams defense ranked in the middle of the road, allowing 21.8 points per game in 2012. The Road Warrior’s son is the best chance of improving in the competitive NFC West.

Darrelle Revis, CB Tampa Bay Buccaneers
        Point value: 1-2.5 points

Why so valuable: Revis is “the” shutdown corner in the NFL when 100 percent but most are holding their breath after he missed 2012 with a knee injury. “If he stays healthy and performs, he’s in the ‘best in league’ argument at the position,” says Black.

        Brian Orakpo, LB Washington Redskins
        Point value: 0-1.5 points

Why so valuable: The Skins defense took a slide after Orakpo went down in Week 2. While D.C. is all about RG3, Washington needs to be able to stop somebody if they want another playoff appearance.

          CFL
          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Week 5

Edmonton (1-3) @ Montreal (1-3)-- Alouettes lost last three games, as offense struggles in first year without QB guru Trestman (new coach of Bears); Montreal led 24-0 last week in first quarter at Calgary, lost 38-27, biggest blown lead in CFL history. Als were outscored in second half of all four games (total of 59-33); they're 1-3 despite having turnover ratio of +6, a red flag. Montreal won last six series games, with five of six wins by 10+ points; Eskimos lost their last six visits here, by 36-10-34-17-23-2 points. All three Edmonton losses are by 10+ points. Over is 5-3-1 in last nine series games, 3-1 in Edmonton games.

Calgary (3-1) @ Winnipeg (1-3)-- Bombers allowed 38-35 points in losing both their home games this year, by 5-16 points; they're already -9 in turnovers, coughing ball up 12 times in four games. Stampeders won last seven series games, winning last three visits here by 3-1-11 points, with four of last five visits here going over total; Stamps split their two road games, scoring 21-22 points (they're scoring 41 ppg at home). Calgary has injury issues at QB; SMU alum Mitchell was third Stamp QB to play last week, as they won 38-27 after trailing 24-0 in first quarter. Road team covered all four Winnipeg games this year.

Saskatchewan (4-0) @ Hamilton (1-3)-- Roughriders (-7.5) crushed Hamilton 37-0 in last week's game at Taylor Field, Riders' 16th win in last 19 series games; they're 7-2 in last nine visits here (Hamilton, not Guelph), dogs covered four of last six series games, with five of last seven at Hamilton going over total. Riders are 4-0 this year, with all four wins by 11+ points; they're +7 in turnovers, +10 in sacks and run balll for 155.5 ypg. TiCats allowed 30+ points in all three losses; they're got only two takeaways in four games (-3)- Burris has already been sacked 16 times. In the NFL, this would be a trap game.

BC Lions (3-1) @ Toronto (2-2)-- Knee injury to Argo QB Ray has this game off board; even with Ray, Toronto (+7) lost 24-16 in Week 2 at BC Place, as Lions outrushed Argos 160-34, outgained them 417-249 (led 14-3 at half). BC has beaten Toronto six games in a row and 16 of last 17, winning seven of last eight visits here, last two 29-16/18-9. Six of last eight series games stayed under total, eight of last nine played here. Toronto scored 39-35 points in its two wins, 16-28 in its losses; Lions allowed average of 13.3 ppg last three weeks, in wins by 8-14-10 points. CFL home dogs are 1-3 vs spread this year.

Eskimos at Alouettes: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes (-5, 48.5)
The Montreal Alouettes are scrambling for a way to bounce back after blowing a 24-0 lead and suffering their third straight defeat. Perhaps they will find it Thursday when they host the Edmonton Eskimos - a team the Alouettes have not lost to since July 30, 2009. Montreal is 6-0 against Edmonton over the last three years but has not looked like the same dominant team under new coach Dan Hawkins, who faces issues with consistency on offense and discipline on defense.

The Eskimos should be happy to head east again after dropping back-to-back games against the BC Lions to fall to 0-3 against West Division opponents. Edmonton’s only victory came in Week 2, when it defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30-20 in Guelph, Ont. The biggest problem for the Eskimos has been their offense, which has produced a league-low 72 points with starting quarterback Mike Reilly (56-for-100 passing, 644 yards), whose job is likely on the line.

          TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-3, 1-3 ATS): Reilly has been effective on the ground, running for 151 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Backup quarterback Jonathan Crompton looked good filling in for Reilly in the late stages of Week 4, finishing 4-for-5 for 76 yards and a touchdown. Crompton is 10-for-16 in his first CFL season and has yet to throw an interception. Linebackers JC Sherritt and Damaso Munoz lead Edmonton’s defense with 27 and 26 tackles, respectively.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-3, 1-3 ATS): Quarterback Anthony Calvillo is off to an uneven start, completing 76-of-129 passes and throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns (four). Calvillo has connected with slotback S.J. Green for 307 yards and three of his four touchdown tosses, while only two other receivers - slotbacks Arland Bruce and Jamel Richardson - have more than 100 receiving yards. Linebacker Chip Cox has two sacks and an interception to add to his league-leading 36 tackles, while safety Kyries Hebert has a team-leading five sacks.

          TRENDS:
          * Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings.
          * Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings in Montreal.
          * Eskimos are 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games.
          * Alouettes are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

          EXTRA POINTS:
          1. Hebert, living up to his “Angry Bird” nickname, was flagged twice for unnecessary roughness in Week 4, extending key drives in the early stages of the Calgary Stampeders’ 38-27 comeback victory.

          2. Edmonton RB Hugh Charles leads the team with 454 total combined yards.

          3. The Alouettes have not lost a home game against the Eskimos since Sept. 23, 2007, but are 0-2 playing at home in Molson Stadium to begin the season.

          1. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1) The Riders look like a CFL juggernaut right now. I guess the only concern is, are they peaking too early? Remember, they'll host the 101st Grey Cup in Regina this fall. A loss is coming, but I'm certainly not interested in standing in Saskatchewan's way right now.

          2. B.C. Lions (2) B.C. has benefited from a rather soft schedule over the last few weeks, hosting the Argos before a home-and-home set with the Eskimos. Things will get a little tougher this week (or should I say next week - the game will be played on Tuesday) as they head to Toronto for their toughest road test of the young season.

          3. Calgary Stampeders (3) Drew Tate is hurt. Now Kevin Glenn is banged up as well. No big deal. The Stamps have more QB depth than any team in the league, with third-stringer Bo Levi Mitchell more than capable of holding his own as we saw last weekend against Montreal. We'll see if the Stamps can avoid a letdown against a hungry Bombers squad in Winnipeg on Friday.

          4. Toronto Argonauts (4) Toronto desperately needed a strong showing in Winnipeg last week and got just that, rolling to a 35-19 victory. Unfortunately, they'll have to soldier on without RB Chad Kackert for the next few weeks, and to make matters worse, QB Ricky Ray is nursing a knee injury but should be good to go by Tuesday night when the Argos host the Lions.

          5. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5) The Bombers aren't doing anything to instill much confidence in their home faithful, but with that being said, neither are the teams below them. Despite winning only once in four games this season, Winnipeg still finds itself just one game back of the East-leading Argos. The Bombers have dropped seven in a row against the Stampeders but will try to reverse that trend on Friday.

          6. Edmonton Eskimos (8) I'm going to give the rebuilding Eskimos the benefit of the doubt and bump them up a couple of spots this week. They're just 1-3, but those three losses have come against Saskatchewan and B.C. (twice), arguably the league's two best teams. They didn't quit last Saturday at B.C. Place, and have a winnable game on deck in Montreal on Thursday night. Obviously, QB Mike Reilly's injury status will be key.

          7. Montreal Alouettes (7) The Als looked great last week. For a quarter. It was all downhill from there as the offense couldn't punch back once the Stampeders made the necessary defensive adjustments. QB Anthony Calvillo and offensive coordinator Mike Miller are saying all the right things, but body language during games seems to indicate otherwise. Needless to say, the Dan Hawkins era is off to a miserable start in Montreal.

          8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6)
Until the Ti-Cats can get healthy, there will continue to be a few stinkers here and there. We certainly saw one on Sunday as they were trounced 37-0 by the Riders in Saskatchewan. Hamilton won't have to wait to get a shot at revenge as it will host the Riders on Saturday night in Guelph. The good news is, Saskatchewan hasn't swept the season series since 2010.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Angel Hernandez and the best 'over' umps in baseball
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MLB umpire Angel Hernandez added to his record as the best ‘over’ ump in baseball, calling the balls and strikes during the Chicago Cubs’ 7-6 extra-innings win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, which played over the 8-run total.

That improved the ‘over’ to 17-5 over/under when Hernandez is behind home plate this season, watching scores top the total in 77.3 percent of those games.

The 22-year MLB veteran has watched an average of 10.1 runs make it to the scoreboard in his 22 appearances as home plate ump, including 2.91 home runs in those games – highest among MLB umpire. Wednesday’s game featured two home runs.

Hernandez isn’t the only ump trending toward the over in 2013. Here’s a look at some of the other masked men helping MLB scores find their way above the number:

                            Ed Hickox (13-5 O/U, 10.4 rpg)
                            Jerry Layne (10-4 O/U, 8.9 rpg)
                            Tim Timmons (13-7 O/U, 9.1 rpg)
                            Chris Guccione (13-7 O/U, 9.5 rpg)
                            Mike Everitt (14-8 O/U, 9.7 rpg)
                            Cory Blaser (14-8 O/U, 10 rpg)
