    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Current odds to win the Canadian Open golf tournament this week.......

12-1-- Brandt Snedeker-- When the favorite its 12-1, its anyone's game.

18-1-- Hunter Mahan-- In final Sunday group in last two majors.

18-1-- Matt Kuchar-- Made 20 consecutive cousts; 6th in adjusted scoring.

20-1-- Charl Schwartzel-- Nine top 25's in 12 tournaments this year.

22-1-- Dustin Johnson-- Dates Gretzky's daughter; people's choice?

25-1-- Watson/McDowell-- McDowell has three wins, five MCs in his last nine tournaments.

    *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) We talked last week about Belmont's Ian Clark playing for Golden State in the Las Vegas Summer League, after scoring 16 ppg for Miami's team in the Orlando league; well, the Warriors won the Vegas league, and Mr Clark had 33 points in the tournament final, making him tourney MVP. Good for him-- you'll be watching Ian Clark in the NBA this winter.

    12) To the woman with the crying baby who sat right behind me on the flight from Chicago to Albany Tuesday: Thank you very little.

    11) Minnesota Twins' star catcher Joe Mauer didn't play Tuesday, because he flew home to be his wife was in the hospital, where she was delivering twins of their own.

    10) In case you care about such things, Iron Maiden concert at MGM in Las Vegas September 12 is already sold out; so are the One Direction concerts at Mandalay Bay early next month. Just thought you should know.

    9) Mets starting pitchers allowed one earned run in their last 20 IP.

    8) Dodgers were down 8-3 in 7th inning, rallied to win 10-9 in Toronto over the slumping Blue Jays. .LA is 13-4 so far in July.

    7) Giancarlo Stanton has played nine games at Coors Field, and has seven homers there; if I'm him, I become a free agent as soon as possible, I sign with the Rockies and I break the single season home run record. All of them.

    6) Greedy bastard update: gas went up 15 cents a gallon while I was away on vacation, from $3.74 to $3.89 a gallon; 15 cents in 12 days. Bastards.

    5) Odd doubleheader in San Francisco last night, where the Giants were the visiting team in the nightcap, since it was the makeup of a game that was rained out in Ohio earlier this season. Visiting side won both games.

    4) Matt Garza's first start for Texas is tonight; he won his last five starts for the Cubs, making it way easier to trade him.

    3) Joey Votto has a career batting average of .427 in Minute Maid Park, 23 points higher than anyone else in baseball visiting the Astros.

    2) Sports Illustrated puts Pirate closer Jason Grilli on its cover, and the guy goes on the DL with arm problems; if I were a superstitious guy, I'd wonder if there was a jinx involved with that magazine.

Oh wait, there are few people more superstitious than me. Pirates need a new closer (Papelbon?)- front office needs to show they're trying to win!!!!

    1) Speaking of which, Baltimore acquired Frankie Rodriguez Tuesday, in exchange for a prospect; the Orioles are trying hard to win....

NFL Games of the Year: Ravens could be FG dogs vs. Packers

NFL Week 6: Green Bay Packers at Baltimore Ravens (-1)

      Past history:
Green Bay is 2-1 SU and ATS in the three regular season meetings since 2001. The O/U is 2-1.

      Early look at the Packers:
Last year reached a frustrating conclusion for Green Bay, but only the Broncos, Patriots and 49ers have season win totals higher than the 10.5 for the Packers. Aaron Rodgers is still in his prime, so the team is always dangerous.

      Early look at the Ravens:
The Super Bowl hangover has struck better teams than this one hard. Never mind the fact that with the departure of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, the soul of the team has been ripped out. If the season is impressive it means that Joe Flacco will really have earned his massive raise.

      Where this line could move:
The Ravens will have at least two losses heading into this one — at Denver and against Houston. The Packers have a bye two weeks before this game, so they will be rested and ready. Green Bay will be favored at kickoff. If Green Bay can make a statement in its opener at San Francisco, then the Cheese Heads could be favored by as much as a field goal.

Study says bettors shouldn't overthink it when picking winners

A series of studies from the Korea University Business School have revealed findings that may make some bettors want to re-think how they handicap.

The research shows the devil can be in the details when trying to pick winners in MLB and soccer and bettors tend to be more successful when taking a "big picture" approach.

Researchers examined one billion bets placed between 2008-2010 through Korea's largest sports-betting company, Sports ToTo. Researchers split each of the three studies into two groups: Half were asked to pick the outright winner and the other half were asked to pick a specific score.

"The pattern of performance across the three studies was remarkably consistent," says an article from Scientific American. "Participants who made general win/lose predictions were reliably better at projecting the winners of the sporting events than those who made specific score predictions."

The article went on to say:

"Even experts were reliably better in predicting winners when making general bets than when making specific bets. It seems that even in cases where greater knowledge may offer an advantage, the act of focusing on that knowledge can disrupt decision making."

Those making the general bets relied on global assessments like overall impressions of the team, performance in past seasons, etc. The more specific group dug more deeply into the statistics.

In a nutshell the data from this huge study says you should use your gut instincts when placing a wager.

          Wednesday, July 24

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WNBA games playing 'under' the total 60 percent of the time
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The WNBA is the summer’s forgotten sport, but a handful of total bettors are having a season to remember strictly by wagering on the ‘under’ in women’s basketball action.

WNBA games are playing under the total 60.22 percent of the time, heading into Tuesday’s schedule, with July’s contests posting a 14-23 over/under record (62 percent under), including a 0-6 over/under mark this past weekend. Heading into July, the WNBA had produced a 24-35-2 over/under mark.

Only two teams have leaned toward the ‘over’ this season, the Washington Mystics (9-8-0 O/U) and Tulsa Shock (10-8-1 O/U). The biggest breadwinners for ‘under’ bettors have been the Indiana Fever (3-11-1 O/U) and Seattle Storm (5-11 O/U). Both teams rank at the bottom of the WNBA in scoring, averaging 69.3 and 68.9 points respectively.

Teams are averaging 76.38 points per game this season compared to 77.53 points in 2012.

MLB Top 5: Best left-handed money pitchers in baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a look at the year-to-date moneyline returns for the Top 5 left-handers in the majors through Monday's games according to ***********'s money pitchers rankings.

Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks (11-1, +14.45 units)

He’s not only the top left-handed pitcher this season when it comes to his team’s return on the moneyline, but he is the No.1 pitcher overall with a +14.45 units return through his first 19 starts. Corbin boasts an 11-1 win/loss mark and an overall ERA of 2.35. The Diamondbacks have gone an impressive 17-2 in those 19 starts and have also been profitable on the total as well recently with six of his last eight starts staying under the closing number.

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (14-3, +10.41 units)

The Rays boast a team record of 16-4 in Moore’s first 19 starts this year. His personal record is 14-3, and he has now won his last six starts after the Rays posted a 3-0 win over Boston Monday. This followed a rough patch in mid June in which Moore lost three consecutive starts that cost -4.00 units on the moneyline. However, he has appeared to have regained that winning form in his last few outings. The total has stayed under in four of his last five starts.

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (8-3, +7.60 units)

The South Korean lefty is 8-3 in 19 starts with the Dodgers going 13-6 over the same stretch of games. He has just two wins in his last eight starts along with a loss and five no-decisions, but the Dodgers won six of those games. The total has gone over in six of his last seven outings after Los Angeles outscored its opponents 48-30 during this run, including a 14-5 win over Toronto Monday.

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies (9-5, +5.97 units)

De La Rosa is coming off a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs this past Friday, but his team lost 3-1 as a -150 home favorite to drop his total return on the year. He has made a total of 20 starts this season, and the Rockies have gone 13-7 in those games. De La Rosa is 9-5 on the year and 3-2 in his last 10 starts. Colorado has gone 6-4 in those 10 games with a +1.08 return on the money line.

Dallas Keuchel, Houston Astros (4-5, +5.10 units)

Much of Keuchel’s profits have to do with the high moneylines the Astros routinely attract as the worst team in baseball. He has made 13 starts this season. And while he has a personal record of 4-5, his team is 6-7 in those games. That is quite an accomplishment when you consider that Houston is 33-65 and down almost 10 units on the year.

Mariners keep cashing in, win eight in row
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to eight games with a victory over the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night, raking in $679.53 for M’s backers wagering $100 on each game during this stretch.

Seattle, which is 48-52 for -0.99 units on the season, defeated Cleveland 4-3 thanks to a ninth-inning rundown that cleared runners at the corners and a strikeout to end the Tribe’s late-game threat.

The Mariners started this winning streak before the All-Star break, sweeping the rival Los Angeles Angles in three games. Since returning to play, Seattle has won three straight on the road against the Houston Astros and has won the first two meeting with Cleveland at home.

Overall, the M’s are 13-5 in their last 18 games going back to July 2. Seattle has jumped on the back of its bats in this span, averaging six runs per game – nearly two more than its season average – and hitting a collective .277 with 29 home runs in July.

The Mariners send left-hander Joe Saunders (9-8, 4.28 ERA) to the hill for the finale with Cleveland Wednesday. Oddsmakers have set Seattle as a -109 home favorite with the total at 8.5 runs.

Recent streaks: The Braves are now 1-7 in their last eight games off a win, while posting a 6-1 record the previous seven contests off a loss. The Mets are playing better of late with wins in eight of their last 12 trips to the field, including a 6-2 mark to the 'under' the past eight contests.

Padres at Brewers - 8:10 PM EST

                            Probables: S. O'Sullivan (0-1, 6.43 ERA) vs. K. Lohse (6-7, 3.49 ERA)

Series recap: Since the Ryan Braun suspension news broke, the Brewers have been unable to pick up a victory. The Padres grabbed up a second straight triumph at Miller Park on Tuesday, 6-2 as $1.20 underdogs. Each of the first two games in this series barely finished 'under' the total of 8 ½.

Series recap: St. Louis grabbed the opener, 4-1 as heavy home favorites on Tuesday. The Redbirds have been listed as at least a $1.90 'chalk' in all four games since the All-Star break, while St. Louis improved to 3-2 against Philadelphia this season.

Recent streaks: The Phillies have lost three straight games since winning three in a row, while scoring just five runs during this skid. Since getting swept by the Rangers, the Cardinals have won eight of their past nine at Busch Stadium, even though seven of those victories came against last-place opponents (Marlins, Padres, and Astros).

Marlins at Rockies - 8:40 PM EST

                            Probables: J. Turner (3-2, 2.44 ERA) vs. J. De La Rosa (9-5, 3.12 ERA)

Series recap: The inept Miami offense found a way to plate some runs the last two nights, including in Tuesday's 4-2 victory. Miami cashed again in the road 'dog role, while the game easily stayed 'under' the total of nine.

Recent streaks: The Marlins are in the midst of seven consecutive 'unders,' which included three games in which they were blanked at Milwaukee. Colorado's hot start to the season has fallen by the wayside by posting a 7-11 record this month. Cubs at Diamondbacks - 9:40 PM EST

                            Probables: J. Samardzija (6-9, 3.91 ERA) vs. I. Kennedy (3-7, 5.29 ERA)

                            Probables: M. Leake (9-4, 2.79 ERA) vs. C. Gaudin (4-1, 2.15 ERA)

Series recap: Cincinnati trounced San Francisco in the opener, 11-0 on Monday in the road 'dog role. The two teams split an odd doubleheader last night as the Giants won the nightcap as the 'away' team, 5-3 in a make-up game from a rain-out in Cincinnati on July 4. The victory was the first for the Giants in six tries against the Reds this season, coming off last season's improbable comeback in the NLDS.

Recent streaks: The Reds have won each of their last four games off a loss, while going 5-2 in their last seven road games. The Giants snapped a three-game skid with Tuesday's victory, while San Francisco is 3-8 in its previous 11 home contests.
