Where the action is: Early NFL Week 1 line moves

Week 1 of the NFL season is unlike any other. Only in football are bettors able to wager on specific games this far in advance, keeping lines on the go for almost six months.

Books opened betting on Week 1 action back in April and since then a few spreads have seen considerable adjustments. We take a look at the biggest Week 1 line moves with the NFL season still two and a half months away.

Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos – Open: -8, Move: -10, Move: -9.5

Could this be a passing of the torch in the AFC? The defending Super Bowl champs beat Denver in the AFC Divisional Round last year, so revenge is on the Broncos’ minds. Sharps have been quick to write off the Ravens, betting the line all the way to 10 points at some books before buying back Baltimore as a double-digit dog. According to Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with CarbonSports.ag, Baltimore is drawing about 52 percent of the action with money balancing out.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Jets – Open: -1.5, Mover: +2.5, Move: +1

Action on the Bucs has flipped this spread, making Tampa Bay a slight road favorite in Week 1. Of course, the big story in this game is CB Darrelle Revis, who was traded to the Buccaneers by the Jets this offseason. Revis is recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to be at camp and play in Tampa’s opener. Stewart says the Bucs have drawn about 88 percent of the action so far.

Oakland Raiders at Indianapolis Colts – Open: -8.5, Move: -7

Some markets opened the Colts as high as 8.5-point chalk for Week 1. Many wiseguys are projecting a step back for Indianapolis after overachieving in 2012. The Colts were lucky to win many close games last season and won’t be catching anyone off guard in 2013. Oakland upgraded its secondary this offseason and could catch Andrew Luck in a sophomore slump. At CarbonSports.ag, Indianapolis is pulling in 90 percent of the action and all bets on the total have sided with the under 49.5 points.

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins – Open: -6, Move: -4.5

Will he or won’t he? It looks like early action is expecting Redskins QB Robert Griffin III to miss or at least be a bit behind in Week 1 after shredding his knee last winter. The Eagles are also a bit of a mystery, bringing in Chip Kelly as head coach. Philadelphia’s offense will get a kick in the pants and early money thinks this line is too large for a divisional rivalry. At 4.5, 66 percent of bets are on the home side while 91 percent of total plays are expecting a shootout and taking the over 51 points.

Argonauts at Blue Bombers: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3, 52)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' defense continues to dominate with 18 sacks in three games, but the offense has yet to reach that level. Quarterback Buck Pierce aims to elevate his game when the Blue Bombers host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday. Winnipeg has just one win to show for its defensive performance as Pierce has thrown four interceptions and completed 53-of-91 passes for a career-low completion percentage of 58.2, while running back Chad Simpson has just 251 combined yards.

Toronto should welcome a chance to face an East Division opponent after dropping two straight to West Division powerhouses in the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray is off to an excellent start, but his receiving corps needed plenty of medical attention during last week’s home loss to Saskatchewan. Wide receiver Dontrelle Inman and slotback Chad Owens - last year’s Most Outstanding Player - both looked worse for wear after facing the Roughriders, and the Blue Bombers promise to be just as tough.

      TV:
      8 p.m. ET, TSN

      ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (1-2):
Slotback Andre Durie, who is from Mississauga, Ont., was named Canadian Player of the Week after recording 122 combined yards and a 10-yard touchdown reception in Week 3. Owens, who has 640 total combined yards, has been the focal point of opposing defenses, allowing Ray to use a variety of receivers to tally 917 passing yards. Ray has completed 79-of-110 passes and has yet to throw an interception, spreading the field with five receivers (Owens, Durie, Inman, Jason Barnes and Spencer Watt) recording more than 100 receiving yards apiece.

      ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-2):
Coach Tim Burke cancelled practice Monday as Winnipeg sorted through its injury situation. Linebacker Terrell Parker will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and defensive back Desia Dunn is out at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, while a host of ailing players including defensive end Alex Hall (league-leading five sacks) missed practice Tuesday. The Blue Bombers allowed six sacks on Pierce in their loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 3 and will need to protect him better if they hope to get their offense going.

      TRENDS:

      * Argonauts are 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.
      * Under is 4-1 in Blue Bombers last five games overall.
      * Argonauts are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Winnipeg.
      * Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Winnipeg.

      EXTRA POINTS:

      1. Winnipeg is looking for its first home victory at new Investors Group Field after losing to the Montreal Alouettes in Week 1.

      2. Argonauts RB Chad Kackert has been limited to 55 rushing yards over the last two games after recording 112 against Hamilton to open the season.

      3. The Blue Bombers were flagged for 19 penalties in Week 3.

MLB Top 3: Baseball's best runline bets after the All-Star break
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The marathon MLB season can start to wear on bettors after the break, which makes it a good time to mix up your wagers with something new. If you’ve been betting nothing but moneylines, try your hand at the runline – baseball’s version of the spread.

We take a look back over the past five seasons to find out which clubs have constantly covered the runline after the All-Star break.

                      Records between 2008-2012.

                      Best post-break runline bets

Baltimore Orioles (164-202 SU, 197-169 ATS)

The Orioles constantly get love on the runline from oddsmakers due to playing in the ultra-competitive AL East. Baltimore has made the most of those extra runs, covering the spread 53.8 percent of the time after the break since 2008. This year, the O’s are 54-42 against the runline for +15.86 units.

Oakland Athletics (186-175 SU, 196-165 ATS)

The A’s get a similar treatment in the AL West, where the Angels and Rangers hog the spotlight. Oakland has put together some strong second half pushes, including last summer when the club went 51-25 SU and 52-24 ATS in the latter half of the schedule. So far this season, the A’s are 51-44 against the runline for +10.20 units.

Kansas City Royals (157-206 SU, 195-167 ATS)

The Milwaukee Brewers actually have a better second-half runline record (196-163 ATS) than the Royals but K.C. provides much more value due to its losing record. Kansas City was a beast ATS in 2011, posting a 46-25 ATS mark despite winning only 34 of those 71 post-break contests. In 2012, the club went 45-33 ATS. The Royals have struggled against the runline in 2013, going 42-50 ATS for -14.24 units at the break.

                      Other notables:

Milwaukee Brewers (200-161 SU, 196-163 ATS)
New York Yankees (217-149 SU, 191-175 ATS)
Toronto Blue Jays (177-181 SU, 190-168 ATS)

                        Friday, July 19

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four adjustments MLB bettors must make in the second half of the season
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major League Baseball is back on the diamond Friday, kicking off the post-All-Star break schedule with players and managers refreshed and refocused on the second half of the season.

Unlike the pre-break slate, the final three months of the MLB calendar throws a lot more outside factors into the mix when it comes to capping baseball on a daily basis. The temperatures are higher along with the stakes, as the playoff picture starts to take shape.

Any MLB bettor who thinks they can turn a profit in August with the same theories and tactics used in June may want to thumb through Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species".

It's survival of the fittest in the second half of the baseball schedule and some of Covers Experts’ brightest minds explain the biggest adjustments MLB capper must make when betting the back half of the slate:

                        Pitchers and bullpens

The late-summer months can be devastating to a pitcher, even those that excelled in the first chunk of the season.

Standing alone on the mound with the sun sapping your energy is tough enough, but add in the pressure of starring down big-league bats with the game on the line and it’s amazing that these arms don’t melt like a Popsicle.

“I'll look to fade pitchers that have already surpassed their career highs in terms of innings pitched and have shown signs of wearing down,” says Covers Expert Sean Murphy. “A lot of young pitchers aren't used to the long haul that is the MLB season and tend to tail off down the stretch.”

With starters wearing down and resting up for the postseason push, bullpens become even more important down the home stretch of the season. Relief pitchers can also feel the heat before the expanded 40-man rosters provide some extra options in the later innings.

“(Some teams are) in playoff contention right now, despite continued bullpen struggles in the first half,” notes handicapper Teddy Covers. “They'll all be priced like contenders in the second half but without bullpen reinforcements, they're all in danger of dropping out of the race. Over bettors love, love, love struggling bullpens.”

                        Weather

When the mercury rises, so do the scores. That’s the general consensus among baseball bettors. On top of tired pitchers, certain hurlers can fall victim to the heat and humidity more than others.

Fly-ball pitchers like Oakland's Tommy Milone and the San Francisco's Matt Cain have pop-ups, which would have stayed in play in May, soar over the fence in August and September. Sinkerballers and ground-ball arms are not as susceptible to the effects of the humidity.

Bettors can also note cooler-climate clubs coming to play in hot-weather environments. Minnesota may find itself gassed for the series finale after a scorching set in Arlington or Los Angeles, giving extra value to the host side.

                        Odds

Books and bettors have a good idea of what they’re working with when it comes to baseball teams at the break. And for that reason, the moneyline prices see a major hike when a contender takes on a team outside of the playoff picture.

It’s no shocker to see the New York Yankees listed at -300 or higher versus a club like the Houston Astros come September. Betting on those big faves is a high-risk, low-reward wager but looking at the other side is a nice way to build your bankroll late in the year.

“There are times where I'll pull the trigger on a +250 dog that I wouldn't have bet at a +200 price point in the first half,” says Teddy Covers.

He keeps a close eye out for what he calls “September morph” teams, bad clubs that suddenly show life at the end of the season and good teams that stumble toward the finish line.

Last year, bettors would have been bit hard following the Boston Red Sox or Pittsburgh Pirates in the second half of the season (combined -48.86 units) but would have made a small mint cashing in on the late play of the Oakland A's and the Baltimore Orioles (combined +48.86 units).

                        What goes up…

Some baseball bettors would prefer to have their last three months of memory wiped clean when capping the post-break schedule. Facts and figures that have stood strong and true until mid-July now hold about as much weight as Paris Hilton’s bra.

Covers Expert Marc Lawrence says the most notable changes come from the biggest anomalies, like the Giants' losing record of the Nationals' poor first half. Even key players, who struggled in the first half of the slate are big enough impact players that their second-half turnarounds can carry a team back to prominence and provide plenty of value not just on moneyline odds but also MLB futures as well.

                            12) Mark Cuban was watching the NBA Summer League from upper part of the lower level at Thomas & Mack Center in anonymity until they showed him on the arena's big screen. So much for that.

Then kids found him and beseiged him for autographs, which he was signing until he went down on the arena floor to do an on-air interview with Isiah Thomas on NBAtv. He seems like a pretty ordinary guy, for a billionaire.

                            11) Heard similar good stories about Davis Love III out here in Las Vegas last fall, where he went out of his way to be nice to kids asking him for autographs. You hear so many bad things about athletes; its refreshing to see and hear good things about famous people.

                            10) NHL players got the green light to play in the Winter Olympics next winter, which means the NHL schedule will have an unnatural break for the third time in the last five seasons.

                            9) Former Kentucky player Kyle Wiltjer is transferring to Gonzaga after he got the message that he wasn't really needed in Lexington anymore.

                            8) I like the way ESPN's golf coverage shows the ball flight of a drive with a colored stream; makes things a lot easier to see.

                            7) OK, so the New Orleans Hornets (who used to play in Charlotte) are now the Pelicans, and the Charlotte Bobcats are now the Hornets. Got it?

                            6) Of golfers players at Muirfield this week, Lee Westwood has played in the most majors (61) without winning one; Miguel Jimenez (60) is next.

                            5) Looks like Alex Rodriguez will be activated for Monday night's game in Texas; wonder if he'll last longer than Derek Jeter did.

                            4) I wonder who decided to put Pringle's chips in a tennis ball can?

                            3) Also wonder who the backup QB is at Texas A&M; I'm thinking Johnny Manziel might have a rough year, if his offseason is any indication.

                            2) Reds-Pirates this weekend; pretty big series in NL Central, with Bucs baseball's best story right now. You'd think FOX or ESPN would want to show this exciting Cinderella team. No freakin' chance, because the idiots have to put Bronx-Boston on national TV every time they play.

                            1) Eldrick Woods in his last six majors: -7 on Thursday/Friday, but then +21 on Saturday/Sunday. Saturday morning is going to be interesting.
