    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- San Diego State alum Malcolm Thomas had 22 rebounds in a summer league game; its really hard to get 22 rebounds in one game.

-- Mets demoted utility guy Jordany Valdespin, who blew his big chance when they let him play 2B for a week after Ike Davis got sent to AAA.

-- First NHL preseason game is only sixty days away. 60.

-- Good add by ESPN, getting former Rams' GM Billy Delaney to analyze football; would be nice if he smiled once in a while though.

-- West Virginia's basketball team went 13-19 LY; since the season ended, five players have transferred out. These two facts are related.

-- Where are Johnny Manziel's parents during all this chaos? Someone has to tell the kid to put a lid on his antics. Thats what parents do.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Wonder what the odds would've been on Prince Fielder hitting a triple last night? He has ten career triples in regular season play.

    12) St Louis Cardinals have 14 games left with the Pirates, ten left with the Cincinnati Reds-- Wonder how many players, if any, those teams will add before July 31 to fortify their rosters.

    11) This time LY, Matt Cassel was the Chiefs' starting QB, and played in the celebrity softball game at Kauffman Stadium. Now he is the backup QB up in Minnesota, ansd celebrity softball seems like a long time ago.

    10) There were 1,200 accredited media at the first of three SEC football Media Days this week; I actually think I could get a press pass to this one.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive went to college at Dartmouth.

    9) Miami Heat cut Mike Miller Tuesday, saving them $17M of the $33M they were going to owe due to the luxury tax.

    8) Cubs have used 42 players this season; of the 25 players on their Opening Day roster in 2012, only seven are still Cubs.

    7) Surprised that Ron Jaworski had Ben Roethlisberger rated higher than Eli Manning; not disagreeing with him at all, just surprised. Jaws is ranking all 32 NFL starting QBs, a job destined to get him a lot of grief.

    6) Ilya Kovalchuk signed a lucrative contract to play hockey in Russia; curious to see how much money he lost, if any, by bolting New Jersey for his homeland. Timing of his move hurt the Devils in free agency.

    5) Saturday afternoon on FOX: Bronx at Boston.
Sunday night on ESPN: Bronx at Boston. Nice imagination, fellas.

    4) Why don't the Philadelphia 76ers have a coach yet?

    3) Inevitable reality TV show: Guys who clean up unwanted or bad tattoos. I am told it hurts more to get rid of a tattoo then it does to get one.

    2) I could listen to Steve Spurrier talk all day. After listening to his rivals drone on and on with cliches, its refreshing to listen to Spurrier, who once in a while actually says what he is thinking.

    1) These other SEC football coaches are so damn serious; when does Les Miles take the podium? Thats the 20 minutes I want to watch this week.

Florida's football program has a "life skills coordinator". What is that???

flashypants+ racks up MLB Pick 7 win

With the American League's 3-0 win in the All-Star Game last night, flashypants+ became our second MLB Pick 7 winner.

In preparation for the new rules that will soon take effect, flashy did it with 7 different teams in 7 days.

      Congrats, flashy!

Last night's AL win also put kbsooner21 and Kaptain within striking distance at 5 wins each.

MLB Top 4: Best over/under bets after the break

Betting totals in the second half of the MLB schedule can be tricky. The summer heat can turn deep flys into home runs while playoff contenders sharpen their staff down the stretch, keeping runs at a minimum.

These four clubs, however, have proved to be profitable for the over or the under after the All-Star break over the past five seasons:

        Records from 2008-2012.

        Best post-break over bets

        Minnesota Twins (185-157-24 over/under)

The Twins have leaned toward the over since opening the doors to Target Field back in 2010, owning a 113-99-12 over/under mark in those three full seasons. Minnesota is 41-49-2 over/under at the break, with a 23-21 O/U mark at home.

        San Diego Padres (184-163-10 over/under)

San Diego’s pitching woes have been a blessing to over bettors the past two seasons. The Padres went 40-27-3 over/under after the break in 2011 and 42-32-1 over/under in the post-ASG schedule last summer. San Diego continues to cough up runs – ranked 25th in ERA – and is currently the top over bet in the National League at the break.

        Best post-break under bets

        Tampa Bay Rays (157-192-13 over/under)

The Rays have topped the American League in unders after the break the past two seasons, going a collective 59-82-7 over/under. Tampa Bay is accustomed to being in playoff contention down the stretch and its pitching staff has kept opponents in check. The Rays enter the break with a 46-43-7 over/under mark this season.

        Philadelphia Phillies (160-188-13 over/under)

The Phillies’ talented staff gets a lot of the glory for Philadelphia’s under success, but the truth is that the bats haven’t been that great in recent seasons. The Phillies went 30-42-3 over/under last summer, hitting .246 and averaging 4.2 runs while boasting a collective 3.37 ERA – fifth best in the majors after the break.

NFL Games of the Year: Steelers spread could drop at New England

Odds are out for the biggest and best games of the upcoming NFL season. Covers Expert Ben Burns gives you his insight into some of these marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

NFL Week 9: Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots (-9)

          Past history: New England 10-9 SU, 11-8 ATS, 10/9 O/U since 1986
          Recent history: New England 1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1/1 O/U since 2010

Early look at the Steelers: The Steelers, who are being projected to win nine games, play on the West Coast (at Oakland) the week before and host Buffalo after this game. The Steelers were 3-5 ATS on the road last season but 2-1-1 ATS as underdogs. They're 4-1 ATS as underdogs of greater than eight points this millennium.

Early look at the Patriots: The Pats, who are being projected to win 11 games, are off a game vs. Miami and have a bye on deck in Week 10. They were 4-4 ATS at home last regular season, going 8-6-1 ATS when laying points overall.

Where this line will move: Injuries and performance, through the first half of the season, will naturally play key roles in determining which way this line goes. If the teams were of roughly equal health and had equal records coming in, I could see the line dropping to -6 or -7.
